Fox News lets the mask slip once again

This is not a Romney campaign ad. Not technically anyway.

It is a video produced by the Fox News Channel as a news product, a “fair and balanced” review of the Obama presidency to date. It was broadcast on the channel this morning.

Twice.

Since then, it has become such an embarrassment that Fox has made it vanish from its website.

UPDATE: The Fox PR folks emailed, asking that the following response be posted:

“The package that aired on FOX & Friends was created by an associate producer and was not authorized at the senior executive level of the network. This has been addressed with the show’s producers.”
–Bill Shine, Executive Vice President of Programming, FOX News Channel

Going back to the topic and the first page, I find it CRAZY that people think CNN is liberal. The same station that repeatedly gives more time and attention to the Tea Party wing of the right than any other aspect of politics, the same station that blasted our minds with 24 hour coverage of the wars and how awesome we were doing when we were invading Iraq, the same station that has Wolf Blitzer and Erin Burnett – BOTH CONSERVATIVE…. Yet the evidence seems to be either “They’re not Fox” or “They don’t agree with Fox 100% of the time and anything that isn’t 100% conservative at all times is LIBRUL”

Wake up, people. There is no “mainstream” liberal media. The media is largely conservative. And I have pointed this out with FACTS repeatedly and the best I get out of you guys when I do that each time is “You must be wrong because *I* believe that the media is liberal.”

How about this: You make the contention the media is liberal. PROVE IT.

But why would we expect Liberals to understand that. Barry has spent 5 trillion and they want to give him more.

I can’t answer for Liberals, but you seem to forget one little Constitutional nugget. Appropriations begin in the House. Since the election of 2010, that chamber has been under GOP control. Any “spending” that Obama has done was approved by the GOP, therefore, it’s not just his spending. Since you want to be “fair and balanced” about things. I love how Reagan’s spending is blamed on his Democratic Congress, yet nary a peep about the GOP House when it comes to Obama’s. I wonder why?

I wrote the piece was not news. Is that not honesty?

Oh, sure. And, kudos.

My issue was with your assertion that MSNBC was “a political agenda posing as a news station.” I think that’s not accurate at all. MSNBC does not claim objectivity, Fox News, repeatedly, does, and I thought it was dishonest to try to draw equivalence between the two outfits.

I don’t expect you to agree with MSNBC. Heck, a lot of the time I roll my eyes at what’s on there, myself–there are really only two shows I like, Chris Hayes’ and Rachel’s, and I catch both only intermittently these days.

hope that’s clear now. I’m not calling you a liar, if that’s what you thought.

PIPA’s study of misinformation in the 2010 election didn’t just show that Fox News viewers were more misinformed than viewers of other channels. It also showed that watching more Fox made believing in nine separate political misperceptions more likely. And that was a unique effect, unlike any observed with the other news channels that were studied. “With all of the other media outlets, the more exposed you were, the less likely you were to have misinformation,” explains PIPA’s director, political psychologist Steven Kull. “While with Fox, the more exposure you had, in most cases, the more misinformation you had. And that is really, in a way, the most powerful factor, because it strongly suggests they were actually getting the information from Fox.”

And those Fox “News” viewers are so willingly brainwashed.

Take a break, Bookman. We police our own so you don’t have to.

From the WSJ: Fox programming executive vice president Bill Shine said the video was created by an associate producer and wasn’t authorized at the network’s senior level. He said senior executives wouldn’t have approved it and that the matter was addressed with the show’s producers.

Ed Morrissey, of the conservative media blog Hot Air, questioned the video even though he wrote, “I don’t disagree with much, if anything” that it says.

“If anyone wanted to look for evidence that the overall Fox News organization intends to campaign against Obama rather than cover the campaign, this video would be difficult to refute as evidence for that claim,” Mr. Morrissey wrote.

In summary, then, the “science” of Fox News clearly shows that its viewers are more misinformed than the viewers of other stations, and are indeed this way for ideological reasons… the Fox “effect” probably occurs both because the station churns out falsehoods that conservatives readily accept—falsehoods that may even seem convincing to some liberals on occasion—but also because conservatives are overwhelmingly inclined to choose to watch Fox to begin with.

At the same time, it’s important to note that they’re also disinclined to watch anything else. Fox keeps constantly in their minds the idea that the rest of the media are “biased” against them, and conservatives duly respond by saying other media aren’t worth watching—it’s just a pack of lies. According to Public Policy Polling’s annual TV News Trust Poll (the 2011 run), 72 percent of conservatives say they trust Fox News, but they also say they strongly distrust NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN. Liberals and moderates, in contrast, trust all of these outlets more than they distrust them (though they distrust Fox). This, too, suggests conservative selective exposure.

And there is an even more telling study of “Fox-only” behavior among conservatives, from Stanford’s Shanto Iyengar and Kyu Hahn of Yonsei University, in Seoul, South Korea. They conducted a classic left-right selective exposure study, giving members of different ideological groups the chance to choose stories from a news stream that provided them with a headline and a news source logo—Fox, CNN, NPR, and the BBC—but nothing else. The experiment was manipulated so that the same headline and story was randomly attributed to different news sources… Republicans and conservatives overwhelmingly chose Fox for hard news and even for soft news, and ignored other sources. “The probability that a Republican would select a CNN or NPR report was around 10%,” wrote the authors.

I’m a Democrat. Served in the Army from Nixon through Clinton. I always thought I supported the military regardless of which party was in power. The only time I can definitely remember people disrespecting the military in large numbers was during the Vietnam War. How many of those folks are Liberals or Conservatives today can be argued, but I’d bet there is a mix. Was Cheney, Gingrich, etal any different than the ones protesting? There’s a lot of dead soldiers that carried their water because they had more important things to do. Letting someone else die in your place is what I call disrespect.

In my opinion, real disrespect is those that could have served, didn’t serve, and wrap themselves in the flag. Bottom line is they didn’t care enough about the country or their countrymen to pitch in and help out. All they need to do is look in the mirror and ask themselves “Where was I when my country needed me?”

Just like the Medal of Honor, the term “Hero” should be reserved for a select few that distinguish themselves on the battlefield. Getting killed is not a qualifier, although we need to be grateful for their sacrifice.

In other words Fox News is both deceiver and enabler simultaneously. First, its existence creates the opportunity for conservatives to exercise their biases, by selecting into the Fox information stream, and also by imbibing Fox-style arguments and claims that can then fuel biased reasoning about politics, science, and whatever else comes up.

But at the same time, it’s also likely that conservatives, tending to be more closed-minded and more authoritarian, have a stronger emotional need for an outlet like Fox, where they can find affirmation and escape from the belief challenges constantly presented by the “liberal media.” Their psychological need for something affirmative is probably stronger than what’s encountered on the opposite side of the aisle—as is their revulsion towards allegedly liberal (but really centrist) media outlets.

Well there is that.

I listen to NPR every day, right after Rush. It is always good to get a different slant on things political…. you know, it’s good to know the enemy as well as you can. Most every commentary interview show between 3:00 and 5:00 when All Things Considered starts, is liberal commentary starting with Teri Gross and ending with Diane Rheme. In all of my years of listening to these shows, I have never listened to a conservative being interview on any of these shows or heard a reporter being interviewed that was not from the New York Times or the Washington Post. Their bias, is however, more subtle than Fox’s piece. It’s not an in your face commentary like the one on Fox, just innuendo, jokes and laughs about the right and intellectual snobbery. The arrogance is palpable and you get the feeling that they are up on some kind of pedestal looking down on the common man and making proclamations that could not possible be untrue or even biased. Just the truth. I would not kill the messenger with them any more than I would with Fox but Bookman, as usual, is telling only half of the story.

Brosephus: However, there’s been a Burning Strawman Festival going on here about how apparently Jay’s accusing the video of being inaccurate.

Whether or not Jay says it, the video IS inaccurate. First and foremost it is not accurately represented as a fair and balanced review of Obama’s Presidency. For instance, Osama bin Laden isn’t mentioned AT ALL. Not even to try to take credit away from him.

2) Gas prices are going down, not up, and the President (no matter who it is) is not responsible for gas prices.
3) Unemployment rates (all of the ones measured, including discouraged workers or part time workers who want full time) are going down
4) Food stamp enrollment is decreasing over time

The video makes claims to the contrary in all of the above. They even clip Obama in with statements to make it appear as though he is increasing gas prices himself, increasing food stamps himself, and increasing unemployment himself – all on purpose.

Any war, which causes so much destruction, should be questioned by thinking citizens. Below is one example why – a partial repost of a previous post. I would remind readers that VP Dick Cheney did not serve in the military during the Vietnam War.
=============================================

Mary Elizabeth
May 25th, 2012, 10:06 am

From the book “Family of Secrets” by investigative journalist Russ Baker, pp. 427 – 428:

“The public would soon learn that as Halliburton chief executive, Cheney had grown used to calling the shots. The full extent of Cheney’s clout would not become apparent for years, in part because of his extraordinary penchant for secrecy. . .

Practically the first thing Cheney did when he took office was to convene a secretive energy task force whose advisers would meet with officials from the oil and energy industry.12 It soon became clear that securing additional oil reserves and projecting American power in oil-rich regions was the top priority. A lawsuit, filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative group that opposes abuses of government power, unearthed maps of Iraqi oil fields prepared by the task force, along with lists of the American oil companies interested in each field.

At the time, Iraqi oil was under an embargo and controlled by the United Nations as part of the peace accords imposed after the first Gulf War. Yet the documents, dated March 2001, list ‘foreign suitors for Iraqi oilfield contracts’ long before the administration began justifying an invasion of the country. ‘These documents show the importance of the Energy Task Force and why its operations should be open to the public,’ said Judicial Watch president Tom Fitton.13

If Cheny’s interest in Iraqi oil fields seemed speculative at the time, it was no longer so after the September 11 attacks. The administration would turn quickly to manipulating intelligence in order to achieve what had always been its goal.”

I’m waiting for someone to point to Jay’s exact words or phrase that shows as such. The fact that not a single Fox supporter can show where Jay’s actual premise, in that the video does not match Fox’s “Fair and Balanced” theme, is wrong is quite telling. If the video was indeed “Fair and Balanced” as Fox claims they are, why did the video disappear from their website? Why have they blamed some associate producer for the video? Come now. Cons know that Obama can only make gas prices go up. Cons know that Obama can only make unemployment go up. Cons know that Obama has nothing to do with the military. Cons know that only Obama is responsible for spending and taxes. After all, they heard it on Fox “News”. Their trusted source of fairly unbalanced entertainment.

Fox News viewers are less informed than people who don’t watch any news at all.

That conclusion right there tells you that the study is bunk. For this to be true, watching Fox News would have to remove information from people’s minds. Is that the claim?

Samantha,
Kids of any stripe who earn a scholarship by hard work and good grades deserve them. Wealthy families, whose kids are college qualified, but not eligible for a scholarship should have to pay for their kids education…or co-sign the loans…

Kids of poorer families, who haven’t qualified for a scholarship, but are otherwise eligible for college should have help from the Government to pay for their education. Afterall, an educated nation is best for all concerned.

“Actually, more than half that list is NOT true.” – What part of the video is un-true (besides whether or not the President is responsible for it all…which is the debatable part)??

“Unemployment has been decreasing for some time now: Source: BLS” – Decreasing since Obama was elected? Nope. Decreasing in the past year or so? Yes. But that’s not what the video is arguing.

“Gas Prices have been decreasing and are lower than they were at this point last year: Source: GasBuddy” – Gas is lower now than in 2008 which is what the video was arguing??

“Food stamp rolls are DECREASING. Source: New York’s Human Resources Administration” – Again, food stamps rolls are less now than in 2008 when Obama was elected, which the video is arguing?

It sounds like you’re talking about stuff within the past year while the video talks about stuff since 2008. Blaming it all on Obama is the part that’s no true. Not the 2008 vs. 2012 numbers.

When news becomes so bias you have to put the reporter into the story as part of the plot. He, or she, is no longer a fly on the wall reporting like a camera the events, but becomes an author sometimes of fiction that decides an outcomes and then reports the event to reach that outcome. At first you do it for the pleasure of winning against a big brother who has always won, then you recreate for the greed of being able at artificialize reality and the money it brings.

In Keith Rupert Murdoch there is a man proven by fact gathered under oath to have exploited the boundaries of journalism for his own ends. It is like a fixed sporting event the outcome fitting the bet, yet not one conservative has a problem with this kind of conduct. They like reality filtered to the room temperature they desire. Their answer to this weak character is, in many cases falsely, the other side does it. Nope the other side was Walter Cronkite telling what historians call the the most trusted information of his time. You in turn invented the Fox Network, to the joy and enrichment of a foreign born owner with no stake in our country, which has become the fold to honest reporting. One thing even Murdock’s money can’t suppress for ever is the truth, if the baby is ugly all the money in the world can’t make it pretty. Like the free market there is a law of nature at work and truth is its highway. Fox and the Tea Party ran off the road a long time ago, and now is sell the smell of a sewer as fresh air and those who have never smelled fresh air are buying it.

Actually, yes.

Again, food stamps rolls are less now than in 2008 when Obama was elected, which the video is arguing?

I would suspect the answer to this is yes, since they spiked starting in 2008 and have been a wavy line since then. If I can, I will look this up and get back to you.

As for unemployment, within a few months we’ll be able to say it was less than this point in 2008 too. So I guess you can count this as a 1 out of 3, you win, for now situation.

But the video, to be clear, isn’t factually accurate all the way down the line, even on technicalities, as you seem to be implying.

LOL, now that is funny as he&&! This is why you should never compromise with liberals. It is better to go down in flames and rise again without liberals. First we kick them all out of the political houses and then we kick them out of colleges. Then the road to recovery will be quick and hearty.

“As for unemployment, within a few months we’ll be able to say it was less than this point in 2008 too.”

I agree.

“Actually, yes.” – Gas was less than $2 when Obama was elected, now $3.50. But it was b/c of the recession, which the video doesn’t mention. And the $3.50 is not Obama’s fault.

The video is being purposefully misleading w/ it’s numbers even if they are technically true.

Ahhhh but you said in 2008. Peak gas price in 2008 was $4.11 average, and on this exact date in 2008, it was higher then than it is now. In fact, it remained higher than it is now until September of 2008.

So nice try.

You missed the jist of the comment, my friend, inspite of Obama’s declaration of war on an oil based economy, the turmoil in Europe has lead to cheaper gas prices for us. Obama is responsible today and will be trepsonisble tomorrow or until he is booted out of office.

Peadawg: Yeah you got me on a technicality there

You were trying to argue the attack ad was somehow factually correct based on a single technicality (gas prices being way low at the very end of the Bush Presidency) and I gave you a few point-for-point FACTS (this day in 2008, remaining there till Sept 2008, etc).

The bottom line is – FACTS show that gas prices have nothing to do with the President. And any argument made to somehow blame him for it right now fail on MULTIPLE levels, also due to facts. The point here is there is no factual basis AT ALL for arguing that gas prices are up under Obama. It’d be the same as taking the U-3 unemployment rate from March and putting it on the same graph as the U-6 unemployment rate from April, drawing a line between them, to claim gas prices are up under Obama.

If he is responsible today, then how come gas prices are down? In your view, it’s because if gas prices go down then other forces MUST have somehow made that happen, and that if prices go up that means Obama has somehow gotten control again. Convenient logic, that.
