To ease us back into the political world after a great holiday weekend, a semi-playful little question:
What is it with the Republicans and Donald Trump?
The guy’s a Class A jerk who’s still out there peddling the toxic nonsense that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. He’s also publicly lobbying for a prime speaking spot at the GOP convention in Tampa, and for all we know, he may actually get one.

I mean, Mike Huckabee has seriously suggested Trump as a replacement for Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, and Mitt Romney continues to play along with the fool as well, both seeking and touting Trump’s endorsement. Romney has even agreed to appear at a major fundraiser hosted by Trump tonight in Las Vegas. (Newt Gingrich is expected to attend as well, creating a concentration of egomania that may very well skew the Earth’s gravitational field.)
And how does Romney respond to the question that he lends credibility to Trump and his birther nonsense by publicly appearing by his side?
“You know, I don’t agree with all the people who support me and my guess is they don’t all agree with everything I believe in. But I need to get 50.1 percent or more and I’m appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people.”
I’m not the George Will fan that I used to be, but over the weekend Will got it right:
“I do not understand the cost benefit here. The costs are clear. The benefit — what voter is going to vote for (Romney) because he is seen with Donald Trump? The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious, it seems to me. Donald Trump is redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be very low and you can still intrude into American politics.”
To which Trump responded via Twitter:
As insults go, Will definitely wins higher marks, although it should also be said that with Trump as his target, Will had a little better raw material to work with. And while “bloviating ignoramus” earns bonus points as a nice, rhythmic, multi-syllabic compound, it falls well short of the classic description of Trump as a “short-fingered Vulgarian.”
The return fire from Trump, however, was disappointedly pedestrian. The American people have come to expect more from a veteran of media feuds with the likes of Rosie O’Donnell and others. They know that while Trump has always lacked wit, his utter lack of class and manners has usually served as a rhetorical combover to hide those shortcomings. Boilerplate such as “dumbest and most overrated” simply is not up to — or more accurately down to — what we’ve come to expect from The Donald.

Soros, Gates, Buffet and many others have given away zillions of dollars to charity. In fact they give away more every year than the bloviating ignoramus has in his entire tawdry, narcissistic, “It’s ALL about ME!!” life.
APRIL 12–During the recent Comedy Central roast of Donald Trump, the presidential aspirant used his rebuttal time to remind the audience–and a dais of tormentors–that he had “seven billion f&cking dollars in the bank.” He delivered this rebuke with the kind of pure joy seen when a boy discovers Santa has brought him a puppy for Christmas.
More than his towering ego, vituperative tongue, or peculiar hairstyle, money has defined Trump during the 30-plus years he has spent in the public eye. He frequently brags of his billions, and even sued a journalist who had the nerve to question whether those 10-figure pronouncements were severely inflated.
Now that Trump is again threatening to run for president–and has, for the first time, gained some political traction thanks to his embrace of the “birther” movement–The Smoking Gun has examined how the 64-year-old developer has spent some of that massive fortune. Specifically, Trump’s philanthropy over the past 20 years, which has been channeled through the Donald J. Trump Foundation.
A TSG review of the group’s Internal Revenue Service returns dating back to 1990 reveals that Trump, the foundation’s president, may be the least charitable billionaire in the United States.
How miserly is The Donald?
From 1990 through 2009, Trump has personally donated a total of just $3.7 million to his foundation, which was incorporated in 1987. In fact, the billionaire is not even the largest contributor to his own charitable organization.

Both the amount of money Trump has donated to his own foundation as well as the aggregate contributions made by the not-for-profit group are pitiful when compared to the philanthropy of other high-profile tycoons like Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Larry Ellison, Ted Turner, Michael Bloomberg, David Geffen, or S.I. Newhouse.
For example, in 2008 alone, Bloomberg’s charitable contributions totaled $235 million. In 2009, Ellison gave his medical foundation stock worth $73.2 million, according to IRS records. Newhouse’s foundation reported making donations totaling $11.8 million on its 2009 IRS return. And a tax return filed last year revealed that the late entertainer Johnny Carson even left his charitable foundation $156 million.
Trump’s miniscule donations have also been dwarfed by the charitable contributions of Leona Helmsley, whom Trump took great pleasure in mercilessly skewering. Helmsley, who died in 2007, left billions to her charitable trust, which last month alone made donations totaling $12.93 million (or nearly twice what Trump’s foundation has donated in the past 20 years).
In the aftermath of national tragedies like September 11 and Hurricane Katrina–when public figures worth a fraction of Trump were donating seven figures to relief organizations–the billionaire apparently misplaced his checkbook somewhere in his triplex atop Trump Tower.
Helmsley, by comparison, gave $5 million to the American Red Cross when New Orleans was submerged, and, post-9/11, she gave $5 million to the New York Police and Fire Widows’ and Children’s Benefit Fund.
In 2006, Trump’s foundation did give $1000 to the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Fund, a controversial Scientology program (co-founded by Tom Cruise) that promoted a “purification rundown” for firemen and others who inhaled toxins while working near the smoldering remains of the World Trade Center.
No wonder the self-obsessed – though neer-do-well versions – revere him so…

The answer is simple, and it creates an unprecedented danger for the Republican Party, in particular, and for social conservatives in general. Their hate for Obama is so profound, so all consuming, so universal that Republican ilk and apparatchik will associate with any low life, vulture, vampire, insect, reptile, termite, scavenger- Limbaugh, Coulter, Malkin, Trump, Norquist, Arpaio, Hannity, et al that expresses disdain for Obama. Intellect and reason and good government has nothing to do with it.
It is not logical, but it is real. This hate for Obama has been and continues to be an object lesson for all Americans to see that the Republican Party is not about the good of America, but about its incredible self serving lust for power and aggrandizing wealth for its lemmings.

If you take a trillion dollars, for instance, out of the first year of the federal budget, that would shrink G.D.P. over 5 percent. That is by definition throwing us into recession or depression. So I’m not going to do that, of course…
I don’t want to have us go into a recession in order to balance the budget. I’d like to have us have high rates of growth at the same time we bring down federal spending, on, if you will, a ramp that’s affordable, but that does not cause us to enter into an economic decline.

Read my previous post more closely, Doom. It would be a campaign finance violation for him to tell an associated superpac what to do. He can’t *legally* do it, and neither can anyone from his campaign. Playing fast and loose campaign finance can get you in all kinds of hot water; that’s why John Edwards is on trial right now.
Frankly, if you think that’s a simple and practical action for any candidate to take (not just Obama), then I seriously recommend that you do some reading about campaign finance laws and regulations. Candidates and their campaigns aren’t allowed to have ANY control whatsoever over outside PACs and superPACs. That disconnect was what induced congress to support campaign finance “reform.”

Thulsa: Sure Adam. Companies preferring to hire folks from some universities over others is no proof that some universities turn out a better product. And I’m sure you can prove this right?
It’s easy enough: just because some companies prefer to hire from certain schools because their hiring managers made that decision does not PROVE that those schools turn out a better product. It may mean many things, but “turning out a better product” statistically is not one of the things that correlates to. Surely someone who is not “foolish,” such as yourself, would recognize the truth that those decisions are not necessarily based on anything other than a perception?
Well of course Adam. Lets just look at the micro level to start off with shall we? Do the Obama’s send their kids to Washington DC public schools or the prestigious Sidwell school?
Deflection. Answer the original: Do private schools in this country turn out a better product than public schools? Where specific people put their children doesn’t prove anything. Show me studies that speak to the question, not to logical fallacies.

“MiltonMan, what exactly is your problem with Soros?”
As MiltonMan hasn’t answered, I’ll offer it’s likely Soros supporting MediaMatters, Center for American Progress to the tune of millions of dollars. It’s not only that MediaMatters has such a love affair with Fox, it’s that such groups (banded together in Accountability Now) also target moderate Democrats, or in their words “Congressional Democrats who vote out of line with their more liberal constituencies will face some tough times in the next election cycle.”
So Soros donates millions to groups that target not just conservatives, but moderate Democrats. I’d say that’s why his name doesn’t sit too well.
Soros’s name has the same effect upon many on the Right as mentioning the Koch brothers to many on the Left. Tends to fast forward to extreme emotions and responses.

I agree. I can see why public officials send their kids to private school, but if they were really doing something to impact public schools in a positive way, they would be leading the way with their children

Jay,
The Right tolerates Trump because of money, not so much his personal money but the amount he is able to raise. He helps with fundraising.
Now a simple question is it worse to have a “birther” as a fundraiser, or is it worse to appoint a “truther” to ones adiministration (Van Jones)?
Just curious which one you think is worse?

Are u saying they only found out at the time they fired him? Or did they know and either hire him or allow him to keep his job?
If they didn’t know, what does that say about them and who they are willing to appoint to positions that effect us all?

Doggone,
Why the Obama’s send their kids to private school is a legitimate question. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it less so.
USinUK,
The Obama’s send their kids to a private school because of “security issues”? Really?
Sooooo,
Are you saying and admitting that private schools in general are safer because there is more discipline?
Or are you saying that the secret service for whatever reason can protect kids at a private school but can’t do the same job at a public school? Amy Carter and I believe the Bush daughters all went to public school so right there your argument is looking ridiculously weak.
Or are you saying that the Sidwell school is just better security wise because it has a moat filled with ferocious gators, an electrified barbed wired fence to keep out child molesters, and a team of ex seal mercenaries to deal with any intruders and hence Sidwell in particular is safer?
