To ease us back into the political world after a great holiday weekend, a semi-playful little question:
What is it with the Republicans and Donald Trump?
The guy’s a Class A jerk who’s still out there peddling the toxic nonsense that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. He’s also publicly lobbying for a prime speaking spot at the GOP convention in Tampa, and for all we know, he may actually get one.

I mean, Mike Huckabee has seriously suggested Trump as a replacement for Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, and Mitt Romney continues to play along with the fool as well, both seeking and touting Trump’s endorsement. Romney has even agreed to appear at a major fundraiser hosted by Trump tonight in Las Vegas. (Newt Gingrich is expected to attend as well, creating a concentration of egomania that may very well skew the Earth’s gravitational field.)
And how does Romney respond to the question that he lends credibility to Trump and his birther nonsense by publicly appearing by his side?
“You know, I don’t agree with all the people who support me and my guess is they don’t all agree with everything I believe in. But I need to get 50.1 percent or more and I’m appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people.”
I’m not the George Will fan that I used to be, but over the weekend Will got it right:
“I do not understand the cost benefit here. The costs are clear. The benefit — what voter is going to vote for (Romney) because he is seen with Donald Trump? The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious, it seems to me. Donald Trump is redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be very low and you can still intrude into American politics.”
To which Trump responded via Twitter:
As insults go, Will definitely wins higher marks, although it should also be said that with Trump as his target, Will had a little better raw material to work with. And while “bloviating ignoramus” earns bonus points as a nice, rhythmic, multi-syllabic compound, it falls well short of the classic description of Trump as a “short-fingered Vulgarian.”
The return fire from Trump, however, was disappointedly pedestrian. The American people have come to expect more from a veteran of media feuds with the likes of Rosie O’Donnell and others. They know that while Trump has always lacked wit, his utter lack of class and manners has usually served as a rhetorical combover to hide those shortcomings. Boilerplate such as “dumbest and most overrated” simply is not up to — or more accurately down to — what we’ve come to expect from The Donald.

The dam is cracking. Independants see this even if the “conservatives” in Georgia do not.
Sad on one hand, yet my inner 11 year old is filled with schadenfreude.
The second is the fact that, however awkward it may be for the traditional press and nonpartisan analysts to acknowledge, one of the two major parties, the Republican Party, has become an insurgent outlier—ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition. When one party moves this far from the center of American politics, it is extremely difficult to enact policies responsive to the country’s most pressing challenges.

The question of why the Republicans continue to embrace Trump is best understood by a quote from John Kenneth Galbraith who said: “The modern conservative is engaged in one of the oldest exercises in moral philosophy: the search for a moral justification for selfishness.”

Trump hurts Romney because all Romney needs to do is remind people about unemployment being over 8.0.% Any other topic being discussed hurts Republicans. But going negative also hurts Obama with independents. There are just as many crazies on the other side like Bill Maher.
Also, remember that 22% of the people believe Bush knew about the 9/11 attacks in advance and 22% said they did not know. Is this any crazier than the birthers? What percentage of Democrat donors believe this? Did Obama disavow any of their money? Both sides do not denounce the crazies because they know they are the ones who are most likely to be motivated to vote.
Obama has only a 43% approval rating among Independents so his strategy is simple motivate the base and demotivate independents by being as negative about your opponent as possible. You can see Jay’s article is completely in tune with this because you can see how many articles he writes which have no other purpose than to increase Romney’s negative.
I think this is a mistake because the election will be a referendum on Obama and if Europe tanks this will have a negative effect on the US and Obama’s ratings. Obama will need those independent voters.
My fear with Romney is it will give Republicans control over the Senate, House and Presidency. However, Obama’s strategy and the words of Jay are actually making me evaluate Obama more negatively. They actually make Romney look more moderate since he a Republican from Mass.
Republicans will focus on the deficit and the economy so Obama needs to counter the argument and he is already losing which is interesting since the deficit is because of 1)tax cuts 2) military spending 3) recession 4) medicare spending all of which he inherited. The economy is tough because whatever happens in the next few months he has no control over.

Late to this, but a couple thoughts that, I don’t believe, have been entirely explored.
1) the answer to Jay’s headline question is “The conservative Prime Directive.” In case anyone’s forgotten what that prime directive is, it is to Piss Off Liberals. Doesn’t matter if a) the term “liberal” is so loosely defined it basically means “anyone who doesn’t support my guy”, or b) if there isn’t any actual pissing off going on–merely the opportunity to be annoying is all that matters.
So, that’s why Trump is tolerated. He “pisses off liberals.” that’s what conservatives have chosen to believe anyway.
2) Trump had made a lot of Democratic-friendly/anti-Bush noises in 2004. Interesting to read a Kos entry from that time, and to read the comments in response. Basically, they said “we don’t need this clown.”

“When Oblama disclaims the hateful and stupid Bill Maher and sends back his $1,000,000 campaign contribution we can talk about Donald Trump. Jay’s a hypocrite for not criticizing Oblama for embracing Maher and his ilk …”
How many silly statements can be made in a single paragraph, Oblama?
First, Maher’s pledge was to an independent SuperPAC, not to the Obama campaign. Obama didn’t receive the contribution, and Obama thus has no power to return it. He opposes SuperPACs and has advocated their abolition, but until that somehow happens, Obama has no control over what Maher or the SuperPAC does.
Second, how has Obama “embraced” Maher? You made the charge; please explain how it is might be valid.
Because as far as I can tell, it is a lie. David Axelrod, Obama’s campaign adviser, canceled an appearance on Maher’s show. Obama has never spoken supportively of Maher as far as I can tell. The head of the pro-Obama SuperPAC, Bill Burton, said Maher’s comments had been “vulgar and inappropriate” (although he didn’t turn the money down.)
Burton also pointed out this morning on MSNBC that Obama would never appear with Maher, in contrast to Romney and Trump.
So please, Oblama, explain how you were right in the previous statements.

What time do you get the fax or email from the Obama/DNC for today’s target?

“Easy question: unlike Republicans, Democrats tolerate intellectual diversity”
That is a lie! Democrats only tolerate those who follow the social platform. Turn the page Steve there is another article that tells you all about it.

Burton also pointed out this morning on MSNBC that Obama would never appear with Maher, in contrast to Romney and Trump.
Really? I want that clip!

Steve,
Yes, all of this stuff happened under his watch with varying degrees of his true role. His term is not over and he got beat by convict in one state and another no-name in another. He still has several months left on his term and lobbyist still rule DC agenda, immigration has not new policy, the deficit is frightening to say the least, government waste remains out of control, the real unemployment numbers are atrocious…likely around 16%, and he continued to support Bush cuts, he panders to Wall Street and the telecoms despite rhetoric to the contrary, he’s shown not leadership skills to get congress gridlock, his foreign policy leaves much to be desired….
Too bad the alternative will also pander to the status quo…

Hey, “a black man in office” stop embarrassing all blacks with your bigoted remarks. Newsflash little fellow, all Republicans are not racists and all racists are not white. Grow up junior.

Earlier this morning, I asked you to explain a statement that you made and you did not reply.
I’ll ask you again, Do explain this one. You know, the basic stuff – verifiable facts, events, quotes, etc…
Because in both cases, you have been dead wrong…

Good article:
Since the crash of 2008, there’s no question that millions of Americans have indeed stopped looking for a job. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not working. Look around, it’s much more likely that the officially “unemployed” are busy, doing their best to make ends meet in whatever ways they can. Sex work, drugs and crime spring to mind, but the underground or “shadow” economy includes all sorts of off-the-books toil. From baby-sitting, bartering, mending, kitchen-garden farming and selling goods in a yard sale, all sorts of people—from the tamale seller on your corner, to the dancer who teachers yoga—are all contributing to the underground economy along with the “employed” who pay them for their wares.
