There has long been something mysterious and untold about the story involving Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers, U.S. Rep. Tom Graves and the failed hotel investment in North Georgia that they tried to shrug off onto a businessman with record fo financial troubles.
Some of those questions are answered in a well-told, well-researched and highly entertaining story at Jim Walls’ Atlanta Unfiltered website. It casts Rogers, a staunch and at times conspiratorial social conservative, in an entirely new light to say the least.
More than that I should not say, because it might spoil the story. If you have a few minutes over this beautiful holiday weekend, it’s highly recommended.

I am here because my 3 children & 7 grandchildren, one of whom is an Eagle Scout & 3 others are involved in scouting which is teaching them, as are their parents and churches, to love our country & to treat everyone with kindness and respect, are here. You do not get to make me “bad & wrong” because I disagree with what I view as your warped & perverted view of the world. We are NEVER going to agree on this, but as Voltaire (I think) said, “I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Or in the current vernacular, SO SUE ME. Yeah, I could go on, but it is late, or early on this Memorial Day, so I won’t. One last observation: We all, I hope & trust, love our country & honor those who have died for ALL of us.

I sincerely believe that the best way to honor those who have fallen in their service to our country is to fight tooth and nail to prevent the usurpation of our country from those who’re trying to fundamentally change it. Those who we honor took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic – and they died for it.
We do their deaths no honor if we allow our Constitution to be destroyed by an enemy from within. The military (so far) cannot fight to defend their oath on domestic soil. It is up to everyday ordinary citizens to defend our liberty and demand our Constitutional rights are upheld.

Oscar – the fact that you claim one particular party upholds the Constitution makes me suspect you are only spouting what you’ve been told and want to be true. When is the last time you actually read the Constitution? Do you know what the term “enumerated powers” means? It’s a pretty self-explanatory term. Actually, the whole Constitution is amazingly straight forward. Our founding fathers did not allow much room for nuance. If you have any question about what something means or what it allows, please refer to the Federalist Papers which were written were published to clarify and alleviate concerns that our new Federal Government was not going to infringe on personal and states rights.
I’ve found that most people, like you, who say their particular party is the one who defends the Constitution- really don’t have a clear understanding of the Constitution. As we’ve seen, even some “Constitutional Scholars” either don’t have a good grasp of the protections the Constitution provides, or they simply disagree with the restrictions it places on the Federal Government.
Our Constitution has been usurped by both parties for generations. A death by a thousand cuts. Remember when they used to call the United States the “Land of the Free”? When is the last time you heard it referred to in that way? Yes, we may still be more free than most other countries, but our freedoms are deteriorating at a frightening pace.
If once you assure me that you have read and understand the meaning of “enumerated powers”, I will be happy to provide a long list of things the current administration, the Congress, and the courts have done which are beyond the authority of the Constitution. These things did not start with the Obama reign but they have absolutely increased exponentially since he came into office.
One thing I wish we would all realize is that the President of the United States should not affect our day to day lives. The politicians we should care the most about is our Governor, our State Senators & Representatives, our City Council members, and our schools boards. The Federal Government should rarely touch our lives. The power that those in Washington have taken over us is not authorized in the Constitution.
The party we should vote for is NOT the one who promises all the things they’re going to do FOR us. What they really mean is here are all the things they’re going to do TO us.

Speaking of the Obama/Democrat/media deflection, deception and digression (and name calling) talking points –
…”There is not a liberal America and a conservative America,” Obama declared to cheers at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. “There is the United States of America.
“We are one people,” Obama roared, perhaps envisioning his political future as the crowd rose to its feet. “All of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.”
And strangely enough, it was in that very speech that Obama predicted his own demise. Just before his climactic applause line, the future president issued a stark warning.
“Even as we speak,” he said, “there are those who are preparing to divide us — the spin masters, the negative ad peddlers, who embrace the politics of anything goes.”
On May 21, 2012, more than three years after he was sworn into office, Obama confessed at a press conference in his hometown, Chicago, that he had become one of those peddlers.
That day, his campaign had published a video attacking Romney for his role at his firm, Bain Capital, which bought an Indiana office supplies company and profited off of it before it went bankrupt. The ad said nothing about Obama, and even a handful of Democrats began criticizing the ad for dishonestly targeting the arena of private equity…

Sure, I know what enumerated powers means. It means corporations are not people. It means all people should enjoy the protection of the laws and be allowed to vote, not just the elite few. It means the votes in Florida in 2000 should have been recounted. It means the government is not there just to protect big business, the rich, industry and defense. Those are some of the things it means.

Our founding fathers did not allow much room for nuance.
What???
That must explain why for 223 years, we’ve had endless debates and rulings by MANY courts of law, including the Supreme Court of the United States of American trying to codify and decide exactly what those non-nuanced words mean. And why it has been amended 27 times.

Okay, so Rogers liked to gamble and found a way to turn it into a job. Magazines are full of these sports “touters” and many make a living through their subscription services. This is a “victimless” crime.Gambling in general is clearly not a crime. Only certainly forms of gambling aredetermined by the state to be illegal as is proven by Georgias law approving the lottery. The lottery is a legal form of the “numbers” game which we used to put people in jail for participating in. Just three days ago a lot of time was spent on advocating the legalization of marijuana on this very site becuase many here including Jay believe it to be a victimless crime. A large number of people use marijuana in violation of that law. Our president claims to have not only used marijuan but cocaine as well with out any criticisim from the left. But, this is a Republican! The only difference in treatment.

Lawmaking should not be a game of craps!
Readers should understand that Chip isn’t just one of 56 senators – many of whom, Democrat and Republican – are fine people.
As Majority Leader Chip gets to control the agenda in the Senate. Ask him and he’ll tell you: No bill comes to the floor without the GOP caucus deciding whether or not it should. And because he also exercises control of committee chairmanships, the GOP caucus’s “decisions” are actually Chip’s and Senate President Pro Tem Tommie Williams.
If this process strikes you as unfitting of a “deliberative body” it should.
Rogers & Williams have intimidated many good Republican lawmakers to their will while Democrats don’t even stand a chance of being heard.
The voters of Senate District 21 can change this on July 31. I hope that they do.

There is no such thing as a “victimless” crime. If a crime has been committed, there is a victim somewhere of some sorts. Otherwise, the action would not be criminal in the first place. Sad to see the contorting and twisting done to absolve Rogers of his behavior instead of just saying he was wrong and forgiving him. It’s far easier to just say he was wrong, but in true Christian behavior, you forgive him of his previous wrongdoings.

Brosephus and other readers, I wish to honor those who died for our freedoms – and especially for our freedom of thought – by educating the public to the mind and thinking of one of the primary architects of our nation’s democratic principles, Thomas Jefferson. I hope that, at some time during this Memorial Day Weekend, many will take the time to read – and digest – the following that I have just posted on Maureen Downey’s blog thread, “State of Georgia is undermining our public schools,” to another blogger who has misunderstood Jefferson’s thinking, in my opinion. (It should be noted that both Chip Rogers and Mitt Romney are supporters of the so-called school choice movement, which includes the choice of private schools using public funds, run by private corporations, which could ultimately dismantle public education. Jefferson was a strong proponent of the need for public education to ensure our nation’s continuance as a democratic republic, for which our soldiers have given their lives throughout our nation’s history.)
========================================================
“Mary Elizabeth, 9:51 am
@Jeffersonian, 8:01 am
===========================================
‘@MaryLiz: You’re reading from a script that selectively quotes Jefferson’s writings—and does violence to his legacy in perverting it to support the seminal tyranny of our age: socialism.’
===========================================
Jeffersonian, in all due respect, I think you should consider choosing another moniker for yourself. Thomas Jefferson was the founder of the Democratic Party which you have incorrectly referred to as the “Democrat Party.” You may have heard the Democratic Party incorrectly referred to as the “Democrat Party” on FOX News (among other media outlets), the television broadcasting company that is privately owned by business magnate Rupert Murdoch. Being privately owned, that broadcasting company can choose to broadcast what it wishes, including rightwing propaganda, if it so wishes. Do not think that some privately owned schools might not be tempted to do the same.
And, you are incorrect in stating that I have been “reading from a script that selectively quotes Jefferson’s writings.” I have no such reference book. I have studied Jefferson’s thought processes by having read and digested, in their entirety, the following books, among others, in which Jefferson’s thinking has been explored, in depth:
“Jefferson” by Saul K. Padover
“Revolutionary Characters” by Gordon W. Wood
“John Adams” by David Mc Cullough
and large parts of
“The Life and Selected Writings of Thomas Jefferson, including “The Autobiography, The Declaration of Independence, and His Public and Private Letters,” edited by Adrienne Koch and William Peden.
What is a sacrilege to Thomas Jefferson is that his name, and his thinking, have been highjacked by the ultra rightwing in our nation who, in my opinion, have only shallowly understood Jefferson’s mind. Let us allow the liberal (as he referred to his own thinking) Thomas Jefferson speak for himself regarding the need for public education to sustain America’s freedoms. From page 109 of the Padover book, mentioned above, here are Jefferson’s direct words, lifted from Jefferson’s “Notes on Virginia”:
“In every government on earth is some trace of human weakness, some germ of corruption and degeneracy, which cunning will discover, and wickedness insensibly open, cultivate and improve. Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves therefore are its only safe depositories. And to render even them safe, their minds must be improved to a certain degree. . .And amendment of our constitution (in Virginia) must here come in aid of the public education. The influence over government must be shared among all the people. If every individual. . .participates of the ultimate authority, the government will be safe.”
And, for a more extensive lifting of Jefferson’s words from his “Notes on Virginia,” Query XIV, taken from “The Life and Selected Writings of Thomas Jefferson,” page 246, see below:
“As soon as they are of sufficient age, it is
supposed they will be sent on from the grammar schools to the university, which
constitutes our third and last stage, there to study those sciences which may
be adapted to their views. By that part of our plan which prescribes the
selection of the youths of genius from among the classes of the poor, we hope
to avail the State of those talents which nature has sown as liberally among
the poor as the rich, but which perish without use, if not sought for and
cultivated. But of the views of this law none is more important, none more
legitimate, than that of rendering the people the safe, as they are the
ultimate, guardians of their own liberty. For this purpose the reading in the
first stage, where they will receive their whole education, is proposed, as has
been said, to be chiefly historical. History, by apprizing them of the past,
will enable them to judge of the future; it will avail them of the experience
of other times and other nations; it will qualify them as judges of the actions
and designs of men; it will enable them to know ambition under every disguise
it may assume; and knowing it, to defeat its views. In every government on
earth is some trace of human weakness, some germ of corruption and degeneracy ,
which cunning will discover, and wickedness insensibly open, cultivate and
improve. Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the
people alone. The people themselves therefore are its only safe depositories.
And to render even them safe, their minds must be improved to a certain degree.
This indeed is not all that is necessary, though it be essentially necessary.
An amendment of our constitution must here come in aid of the public
education. The influence over government must be shared among all the people.
If every individual which composes their mass participates of the ultimate
authority, the government will be safe; because the corrupting the whole mass
will exceed any private resources of wealth; and public ones cannot be provided
but by levies on the people. In this case every man would have to pay his own
price. The government of Great Britain has been corrupted, because but one man
in ten has a right to vote for members of parliament. The sellers of the
government, therefore, get nine-tenths of their price clear. It has been
thought that corruption is restrained by confining the right of suffrage
to a few of the wealthier of the people; but it would be more effectually
restrained by an extension of that right to such members as would bid
defiance to the means of corruption. Lastly, it is
proposed, by a bill in this revisal, to begin a public library and gallery, by
laying out a certain sum annually in books, paintings, and statues.”
————————————————–
Notice that Jefferson wrote that public schools and public libraries are important to the continuation of our democratic republic, as well as the importance of historical understanding to safeguard the nation’s future. I wish to highlight the following words of Thomas Jefferson, from above.
==========================================================
“Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the
people alone. The people themselves therefore are its only safe depositories.
And to render even them safe, their minds must be improved to a certain degree.
This indeed is not all that is necessary, though it be essentially necessary.
An amendment of our constitution must here come in aid of the public

If every individual which composes their mass participates of the ultimate

will exceed any private resources of wealth; and public ones cannot be provided

==============================================
Jefferson could not be clearer in stating why public education is inextricably linked to the continuation of our democratic republic than he did in his words, above. My thinking overlaps with Jefferson’s thought processes in his deeper understanding of freedom; however, my thinking does not march in lockstep with Jefferson’s. I follow my own conscience, as Jefferson would have each of us to do. To read more of how my thinking overlaps with Jefferson’s, as well as how my thinking is varied from his, you may want to read my entry, posted on my own blog on December 8, 2011, entitled “Egalitarianism and Capitalism.” See below:

Jay, we all know you are the the designated liberal voice by your handlers- the billionaire Anne Cox Chambers- and probably have no choice of what to write. But could you at least fact check before regurgitating nonsense you read somewhere else For example, the widely quoted and now thoroughly discredited story about Obama having the lowest percentage increase in federal spending. It is simply not true unless one uses very creative accounting to disguise the fact that the Wall Street bailout was a large part of the calculation. The bailout drastically increased the 2009 budget just before Obama took office, making Obama’s 2010 results look small. Plus about $150 billion of the bailout was paid back during Obama’s watch and and the analysis- you bragged about -counted them as spending cuts. Counting them as cuts is nonsense and totally misleading.

I really do not give a whit about this lousy excuse we have for a president, but come November that will change, as will Congress, particularly the Senate, and perhaps we can all just get along and move forward.
Nor was I impressed by Mrs Obama, until I have seen that she does do a lot for returning veterans and their families in particular. On this special weekend, hooray for her!
Memorial Day is just that, an observance in memory and pride for those of our family and friends that have paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the fredoms we currently have.
Please fly a flag, say a prayer, or just remember for a moment all of those brave souls.

• In fiscal 2010 — the first budget under Obama — spending fell 1.8% to $3.46 trillion. • In fiscal 2011, spending rose 4.3% to $3.60 trillion.
• In fiscal 2012, spending is set to rise 0.7% to $3.63 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate of the budget that was agreed to last August.
• Finally in fiscal 2013 — the final budget of Obama’s term — spending is scheduled to fall 1.3% to $3.58 trillion. Read the CBO’s latest budget outlook.

It all really makes sense now. Successful con men, including stock promoters, by definition have to be more charming and intelligent than their victims. In a sense, the victims admire these “bad boy” qualities of the predators. I will grant that this makes your average Republican a victim but it also says they kind of admire the material success of those with more than a little larceny in their hearts. Which explains why they vote for the predators instead of their own logical self-interest. You can go national with that including the whole Tea Party mind-set.

1. The welfare/entitlement crowd, always wanting to get the most for the least effort, all it costs is a vote;
2. The marginally stupid who actually think they are getting something for nothing;
3. Someone with an axe to grind against everyone who has actually done something for themselves and their families, all the time howling about how ‘the playing field’ is stacked against them, when in fact they were too lazy and/or not self-motivated enough to get the proper education or training to hold a decent job;
4. The unions, always wanting more people to subsidize their pensions (see Wisconsin), while contributing nothing of their own;
5. The intellectually vacant (nothing to see inside their heads, move along, move along), knowing that they back the wrong choice, but too stubborn or prideful or just plain stupid enough to never admit that they might have made a mistake, and admit it at least to themselves;
6. Those that just like to watch the world burn;
7. Racists (check the black voting blocks for this clown);
8. Media stooges, always hoping for that “Washington invitation” that never comes;
9. Assortments of minorities, thinking they’re going to get a piece of the pie – check out the tones of the party apparatus (not the POTUS, he’s their front guy)

If there is one recurrent theme amongst the many threads where Jay does his Republibashing, that theme is that, very seldom will other Republicans admit that their elected official’s behavior is such that requires even the slightest reprimand. Instead, it’s always a knee jerk “b..b..b..b..but Timmy did it” response. I find it curious that people, who follow a party where associated officials and voters often put their Christianity out on display, don’t even exhibit the basic Christian principle of acknowleding the shortcoming and forgiving that person for that shortcoming. I guess that’s the difference between saying you’re a Christian and knowing that you’re one.

One important thing to remember in dealing with Pub/Cons who are always out there waving the conservative banner on social issues and promoting their superior virtuous standards on how everyone else should be personally accountable and responsible, etc. — these don’t necessarily apply to their own personal conduct and standards for taking advantage of “bidness” opportunities that they have been involved in, or come their way because of their political office. Or, for using their office to avoid the consequences of bidness gone bad. As a moderate Pub (yes, I used the dirty “M” word), the level of hypocrisy displayed in this area by the Pub/cons is, to me, astonishing.
BTW. The loan made by the shell hospitality corporation to buy the hotel from the now failed (what a surprise!) Bartow County Bank was $2.2 million. It (the corporation and all of its assets and liabilities, no doubt) was later unloaded for $10,000 (never paid) by the principals in a desperate attempt to avoid liability for the Bartow County Bank loan. This shell corporation game never gets old does it? It is not clear if the buyer, Edens, was just a dupe or in on the ruse. But, here’s the gorilla sitting in the corner. What happened to the additional $700,000 above what the hotel was purchased for? That’s a substantial amount of loot – and with the hotel costing ony $1.5 million, it was, in effect, a personal unsecured loan to the principals. Was it used to fix up the hotel? Was there other security provided? And then the Bartow County Bank, sometime before it failed, agreed to settle for $1.2 million of a $2.2 million loan, in a confidential settlement agreement that will never again see the light of day.
That’s a million bucks gone missing. Where did it go. I doesn’t sound like it went to improve the value of the hotel based on Edens advising Rogers to unload this thing as soon as you can. No wonder so many Georgia Banks failed. The amount of “bidness” conducted by those banks would probably make the average tax payer throw up. And of course, when the bank failed and was sold in April of 2011, in comes the FDIC (the American tax payer) to clean up the mess. That’s why I just cringe when these Pub/Cons start their preaching on morals and values. What was it that Jesus once said? Don’t criticize the splinter in your brother’s eye, when you have a log in your own. But, I guess that rule don’t apply when it’s jes’ good ol’ boys doin’ bidness.

Tell the truth, I hope that you will read the ongoing posts that I have written regarding Jefferson’s thoughts on public education on Maureen Downey’s thread, “State of Georgia undermining our public schools,” at some point during the weekend.
However, to address your post, specifically above, I just entered the following words on Ms. Downey’s blog, which should give some qualified answer to what you have written to me, as well as some “food for further thought,” regarding the school choice movement in Georgia:
——————————————-
“Jefferson wrote that public education would be paid for by taxes ‘levied’ on all of the people, themselves. That fact is what makes public education what it is – not simply a ‘general education of the people of Virginia,’ as you wish to interpret it. Private education does not levy taxes on the public-at-large to pay for itself. Private schools have traditionally received their revenue to operate from the pocketbooks of their select private clientelle. The school choice movement is now advancing the idea of utilizing more private schools to educate the public than public ones – but using public funds to do so through vouchers. Private schools will be run by and for corporate interests. I do not believe Jefferson would have supported that.”

And because it is the Memorial Day weekend, I wish to repost these words, here, which I first posted on Ms. Downey’s blog, today, in memory of Thomas Jefferson’s contributions to liberty within our nation and throughout the world:
==========================================
“From page 110 of the book ‘Revolutionary Characters,’ by Pultizer Prize winning author Gordon S. Wood, regarding Thomas Jefferson:
‘Unlike Coleridge and Wordsworth and other disillusioned European liberals, Jefferson remained a champion of the French Revolution to the end.
He saw it after all as a movement on behalf of the rights of man that had originated in the American Revolution. And to the American Revolution and the rights of man he remained dedicated until his death. In the last letter he wrote he expressed his lifelong belief that the American Revolution would be ‘the signal of arousing men to burst the chains under which monkish ignorance and superstition had persuaded them to bind themselves, and to assume the blessing and security of self-government.’ He foresaw that eventually the whole world ‘(to some parts sooner, to others later, but finally to all)’ would follow the American lead.’
—————————————————
Jefferson was a visionary who, at his core, believed in egalitarianism, and what he envisioned into the future is now unfolding on the world’s stage, with the rising of egalitarianism throughout the world, not only in America. Thomas Jefferson has been a major player in this unfolding that is, today, still in the process of unfolding. Jefferson may not have been a soldier in battle, but he was a champion of liberty to our nation and world through the dedication of his heart and mind to the people.
Let us never forget that truth, and let us always be grateful to Thomas Jefferson’s gifts to this nation and to this world.”

Since Obama wants to continue to place the American into groups, I have something to point out to the group that so champions him. It is black people who should be the most angry at Obama. 95% of you voted for him in 2008. What has he done for you? What is your unemployment rate? What is your crime rate? How is your education system? Has he done anything to bring us together as a people or has he attempted to put a deeper gap between the races? Has he done anything to clean up the corruption in Washington or has he become perhaps the most corrupt President in modern history? How has all his green energy mandates and spending worked out for you? How has his self-reported drug use/abuse helped to teach your children to stay away from drugs? What has he done to keep your people out of prison for drug offenses?
In a historical election, the American people voted in the first black President. Did you get what you thought you were going to get or did you get more of the same (if not worse)? I seriously doubt that 95% of you voted him in because you wanted your “Obama Money”. I hope you voted for him because you actually believe he would bring about real change in Washington, that he would bridge any divide that was still between the races, that he would understand and represent black people the way no white person can. Well, he’s failed to do any of that. He wants you to believe that it’s not his fault. He wants you to blame the evil Bush, the obstructing Congress, the selfish rich, the white monster, blame anyone but Obama for any and all of your problems. If you are not actively involved in trying to assist Blacks in bettering any of those things you ask about and if you’re not Black yourself, nobody has to answer jack from you. If anything, you should stop to ask yourself why you’re waiting on the Black Superman when nobody else appears to be doing that. Obama is the President of the United States and not the President of the Black United States. On top of that, Obama is half White. He has done the same thing that every previous President has done to an extent. He has governed for ALL of America and not one specific group just because he belongs to that group.
Other than that, maybe you need to take a deep look inside to see why you have such hatred for melanin. I’m not gonna call you racist as getalife did, but if your thinking is what is supposed to represent conservative thinking and/or logic, I’m surprised that Obama only got 95%. Funny that people always whine when conservatives or anybody against Obama gets labeled as racists. The fact that you assume that Black Americans wanted or expected those things that you asked about is part of the problem. Where have you or any other red-blooded melanin deficient American seen a contract or demand from all of Black America for Obama to do those things? As to the melanin hating, the fact that you even have to ask whether it would have made a difference as to Obama’s melanin content is more than proof enough that you have issues with it. You, like others, fail to either realize, own up to, or even acknowledge that no GOP candidate has crossed 15% – 20% in a presidential election in a long, long time.
http://factcheck.org/2008/04/blacks-and-the-democratic-party/
Even after that, Republican nominees continued to get a large slice of the black vote for several elections. Dwight D. Eisenhower got 39 percent in 1956, and Richard Nixon got 32 percent in his narrow loss to John F. Kennedy in 1960.
But then President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed through the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964 (outlawing segregation in public places) and his eventual Republican opponent, Sen. Barry Goldwater, opposed it. Johnson got 94 percent of the black vote that year, still a record for any presidential election.
The following year Johnson signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act. No Republican presidential candidate has gotten more than 15 percent of the black vote since.
If you look at the graph at that link, you will realize that Hillary Clinton would have received 95% of the Black American vote. I’d wager that she would have been upwards to 98% had she been the candidate. You tend to forget that Black America was firmly in the Clinton camp until Obama was well on his way to becoming the nominee. There was no “automatic” support for Obama because of his skin tone. His support was because he was the Democratic nominee.
