… in which the Chip Rogers story gets more interesting

There has long been something mysterious and untold about the story involving Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers, U.S. Rep. Tom Graves and the failed hotel investment in North Georgia that they tried to shrug off onto a businessman with record fo financial troubles.

Some of those questions are answered in a well-told, well-researched and highly entertaining story at Jim Walls’ Atlanta Unfiltered website. It casts Rogers, a staunch and at times conspiratorial social conservative, in an entirely new light to say the least.

More than that I should not say, because it might spoil the story. If you have a few minutes over this beautiful holiday weekend, it’s highly recommended.

To say the least. Sketchy, shifty, sneaky, cowardly come to mind. Should we expect more out of politicians or will this type of character always be the status quo…..

“In those early days, Rogers worked for and later shared offices with John Edens, a gambling industry entrepreneur who in 1992 lost an $800,000 judgment for fraudulent misrepresentation. In the mid-1990s, Edens temporarily housed what he now acknowledges was an illegal sportsbook operation outside of Atlanta.

Rogers and Edens maintained business and personal relations over the years, culminating in a 2009 deal in which Rogers and then-state Rep. Tom Graves transferred ownership of a beat-up northwest Georgia motel to Edens. The transaction later made headlines when Rogers argued that the deal absolved him from having to pay off a defaulted $2.2 million bank loan.”
==========================================

Whatever else one gathers from the link, above, regarding Chip Rogers, one can see that his interests and his thoughts have been centered around money. In Georgia’s legislature, Rogers has been a leading proponent for using public tax dollars for school vouchers. The transfer of public money through vouchers to private schools, run by private corporations, could, ultimately, create a situation in which education would be used for personal profit purposes rather than for educational purposes for the common good.

In a somewhat related connection, I posted my thoughts on Gov. Romney’s educational plan at 10:30 this morning on the thread involving Romney’s plan to federalize educational reform. Here is a line from that post:

“More specificially, if the federal mandate gives each state educational power (to continue taxing its citizens within its state for educational purposes) but also gives states authority to use vouchers for private education, such as in private charter schools, then business magnates (on the national level) will come into the states and create their private charter schools, using state public tax dollars, through vouchers, to give them their profits.”

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’ll always be grateful to Chip Rogers for saving me from getting chased down and getting a chip put in my brain. You know they’re out there in their hoodies with a boom box and a pocket full of chips and surgery tools, just waiting to chase down some poor redneck and turn him into a robot. Who knows, without Chip Rogers I could of been turned into a big Obama supporter and be rooting for a big tax increase. Now I can walk out of my trailer and know I won’t be going back in with a chip in my brain.

And that’s why I’m willing to cut old Chip some slack about this loan. Think of it this way–if somebody’s got a million bucks or so to loan, he’s got enough money to take the loss of it.

Anyway, have a good Memorial Day weekend everybody. Me and the missus and little Nathan Zell George are going to load up in a few minutes and go looking for some free hot dogs and hamburgers in Cumming. You know they’re out there. The trick is finding them.

The hotel default? The wall street meltdown resulted in reduced travel, persoanl and business and closing of millions of businesses hitting real estate investments, as only those passed out for the last 5 years would not know. There are three belated evictions this past week in within the five nearest subdivisions to my home. real estate fail Is hardly news and every last one of them I’ve talked to over the last four years wants to find “a way out”. The paper just reported over HALF of the homes in Atlanta are under water. This is only NOT catastrophe for those who still have jobs. Over half. With reduced business being the probable culprit versus Rogers being any more limy than any other politician…. You, and the report you recommend have not made a convincing arguement.

There seems to be a shady side of the Republican, religious right, and gambling. Jarrell Walker former chief of staff to House Speaker Glenn Richardson in Georgia was charged with one count of conspiracy, one count of federal program bribery, and 11 counts of honest services mail and wire fraud in a federal probe of gambling-related vote buying of Alabama legislators? He was acquitted but what is a right winger who gets major support from the religious element doing being public relations spokesman for Country Crossing casino in the first place?

Ralph Reed was named in the scandal arising from lobbying work performed by Jack Abramoff on behalf of Indian gambling tribes. Reed was paid to stir up fear in Alabama and in doing so chase the Indian tribe into the arms of Abramoff who would lobby for gambling against Reed. All this in the name of the Christian Coalition. This sounds very similar to Newt and other politicians of the GOP today, fear and God gets votes.

And now Rogers. Seems to me the Lord’s work and our state GOP could find one politician who is not connected with gambling. Do we think this is the Lord’s work? Maybe now you see why some of us do not want to have religion and politics co mingled. If God was a physical being there may be a arrest warrant with his name on it headed his way. All these great Christians and GOP riding His shirt tails now rolling on God saying he made me do it, we were only his mules.

When parties become rigidly ideological and people are voting strictly for ideological reasons the parties and politicians become more and more unaccountable. The percentage of people who will decide the next election is smaller than any previous election. It is interesting to me in such a close election who benefits the most from negative advertising. The negative advertising seems to be primarily to motivate the base and to turn off the moderates to the other candidate. Rarely, do I see a compelling argument from either party or candidate to vote for them but rather a negative attack on the other candidate.

Examples, Obama is running up the deficit. However, the other side never mentions that revenues are down by 5.2% of GDP since 2000. This being because of tax cuts and recession. Also, defense spending has increased by 1.7% of GDP, These factors account for a debt of 6.9% of GDP. Along with Social Security and Medicare expenditures have risen 2.0. Tax cuts(2.1), recession(3.1), defense spending(1.7) and Medicare/SS(2.0) equals 8.9%. Our current deficit is at 8.5%. From 2000 to 2011 our deficit change 10.9%. This accounts for 81% of the change in our deficit since 2000.

Now Obama attacks on Bain. Obama fails to mention he has received over $14 million from Security and Investment bundlers. He also fails to mention Jonathan Levine has bundle over $1 million. Also, not Obama fails to mention

Bain’s portfolio also includes major successes, such as Staples Office and The Sports Authority. But you won’t see them here. Indeed, Romney responded to the TV ad about the bankruptcy of GS Industries, a Kansas City steel company, with his own ad about Bain’s investment in an Indiana steel company that has grown and added thousands of employees. And Bain itself issued a statement defending its overall record, saying that “revenues grew in 80 percent of the more than 350 companies in which we have invested.

Bain also reinvested an additional $16.5 million in the company(GS Steel), evidence that Bain intended to keep the firm going. Nevertheless, six years later, the company declared bankruptcy and eliminated 750 jobs.
Of course Romeny open himself upt for attack by making a claim that was somewhat of a stretch.
So Romney has opened himself to Obama’s attacks by claiming credit for creating jobs — sometimes without justification, as we have written about before( see third link).
Private-equity firms in general have “only a modest net impact on employment,” according to a studyreleased in September 2011 by the National Bureau of Economic Research that tracked the performance of 3,200 acquired firms and their 150,000 establishments. Bain has not said how many jobs may have been created at the 350 companies in which it has invested.

At the end of the day politicians care more about wining than than the truth. I can’t say I see much difference between the two.

Quite right old chap. Who among us has not dreamed of setting up an off shore casino in a Duluth apartment? And, I often resolve my bad real estate investments by transferring them to my gambling associates. Georgia is a bright red state as you know Jay and is run very efficiently. Unlike the federal gubmint of course run by Barrack Obama and the non-budget run Senate. Why not write stories that actually have a bearing on the average person’s life. Such as the way Democrats piss away our tax dollars…. By the way. The important question one has asked is how much did Rogers and Graves pay for the motel to begin with? How Much did they put down? How did they get a 2.2 million dollar loan on that dump? Someone at the FDIC needs to be asking questions I think. The entire loan from Rogers/Graves to the entire Bartow Bank should be criminally investigated. They borrowed 2.2 the bank settled at 1.2 with Rogers and Graves guaranteeing half of that amount. WHERE IS THE MONEY?

SCOUT

One of the things I found particularly interesting is that the average salary paid a teacher/tutor at that time relative to that salary’s status to the income placement in today’s society would be $104,000.

That doctoral thesis, which I’m still trying to finish and digest, is one whale of an eye-opening read!

I understand a lot better my grandparents, whose parents were educated under those conditions, near fanaticism when it came to their requirements for us in the hedge school…

Oh, and before I forget, enjoy this special weekend. Do what they would have wanted you to do in their memory, party hearty with family, friends, good eats and good spirits…

Like other newspapers and magazines,, the AJC has been losing revenue, cutting back personnel and coverage for years. We are lucky we still have a local paper. The New Orleans paper just cut back to three days a week. Changing market.j

The real story this Memorial Day weekend is those who have fallen in the defense of our Republic. The rest of us fall back in line and that includes those who only earned the good police call ribbon. God Bless and keep those who’ve fallen along with their wonderful families and let us also thank from the bottom of our hearts those who have endured wounds, which they will endure for the rest of their lives.

Anyway, I don’t know if this is true but I have heard that the GOP evangelical contingency doesn’t think too highly of this gambling thing. Then again, they did go for the lottery and Chip’s experience with gambling could be very beneficial. All is forgiven, right. He’s a new man, stan. He’s seen the light, right. He’s on the wagon, braggin’. So we don’t need to discuss much.

What are the qualifications for a journalist on the AJC besides being liberal?? Wonder if they could use a conservative right wing English major from a liberal university like UNC? What does it pay?? I can find lots of controversial subjects and that seems to be the only real talent needed.

Tomorrow, my family will meet at the Marietta cemetery and pay our respects to my Mom and Dad. Then we will go and celebrate their life and share our stories with them to our young’uns who never got to know them. Family dies and family lives on.

Still, on Memorial Day I am reminded of my own past and the memories of fallen comrades. There is a lot more to Memorial day than meets the eye, but its true meaning lives in the heart.

My favorite Memorial Day song…

You’re spot on Jeffrey if “on fire” means the every day Obama/Democrat/media deflection, deception and digression (and name calling) talking points.

Remember, at the end of the day the only real question for November 2012 each of us needs to ask ourselves is — am I and/or my family better off today then we were four years ago? Everything else falls under the above 3 D’s…

That’s true ONLY if you believe that the federal government is responsible for whether you’re better off today than four years ago.

I don’t give a damn what your party affiliation is, ethically bankrupt politicians like Rogers have no business being in any government. I for one am thankful that this information was brought forward. I would like for all of the citizens of Cherokee County to see exactly the types of politicians that we have allowed to infest our County and State governments. This includes the entire Cherokee County legislative delegation, as well 3 recently elected school board members. Whoever is minding the store in the Cherokee County Republican Party, you’d better get off your ass and remind your little lackeys that they are to represent the citizens of Cherokee County and not themselves.

Don’t tell me about Jay, don’t tell me about Obama, don’t tell me about Edwards, I’m talking about YOU and YOUR support of thieves and crooks like Chip Rogers and Nathan Deal. What OTHERS have done is immaterial.

What a great time. Lots of awesome people.

And as the makeup of the crowd was probably 15% white and 85% black, 71, the corporal, fast and frumious, idiot and plenty of the other cons here would never have even imagine attending such a non-white affair. Hell, they would have soiled themselves before they even got into the park…
