France Nuyen, left, as Liat in the movie "South Pacific"
Ahhhh, the enduring power of young crushes and lost loves.
I still remember Miss Osborne, the beautiful third-grade teacher who stole my young heart. But the fickle wench went and broke that heart when she returned to school next year as Mrs. Jamison.
Tom Middleton remembers too. As he tells us:
“Remember “South Pacific” and Bloody Mary’s daughter, Liat (pronounced Leah)? Since that movie first came out in the early ’50s, there were several popular songs that followed called “Leah,” and I suspect that I’m not the only one who fell in love with Bloody Mary’s daughter “Leah,” though I was very young at the time.
Anyway, I think Roy Orbison’s is the best, and every time I hear it, you guessed it – it’s me and Leah all over again. So am I sappy or what?”
Yes, Tom, you are sappy. But here’s Roy Orbison, breaking your heart once again to kick off the long weekend.

School boy crushes? Seventh grade, Coach King. Track coach, Social Studies and Science…tough as hell and though I didn’t know it at the time, knew more about the pretty little blond fagling than he knew about himself and how to guide him in standing up and fighting back…and for the nasty minded, no, nothing of that sort ever happened…dammit…

Great. Del starts off the weekend by taking a crap in the FNM punchbowl.
In 1971 there was a coming of age movie called The Summer of 42.
I was 16 years old and though it was really sappy, it had a certain compelling aspect to it. And Jennifer O’Neill was most lovely.

My first crush was Catwoman. But not just any Catwoman, THE Catwoman: Julie Newmar. I was 6 and she was the most compelling creature on this planet. Until the final season of Batman introduced me to the lovely Yvonne Craig, aka Batgirl, and my eternal internal conflict of good versus evil waged war in my mind.
Alas, neither crush bore fruit, but to this day, I implore Mrs. Cane to don a catsuit in the evening hours.

Another superb “teacher” song…
And I have a lesson
that I must impart to you.
It’s an old expression
but I must insist it’s true.
Jump up, look around,
find yourself some fun,
no sense in sitting there hating everyone.
No man’s an island and his castle isn’t home,
the nest is full of nothing when the bird has flown.

Miss McClung. The county traveling music teacher in 1950. Ain’t no song that can express her. If they could of read minds when she come to visit us, I would of been locked up. Now that I think about it, if she’s still alive she’ll be around 85 now. Aging is heck. You got to be strong to go thru it.
And here’s my favorite Roy Orbison. A cute young thing named Linda Ronstadt that looked alot like Miss McClung did a pretty good cover of it a long while back. But when I’m tired of the world I live in and I want to escape for a couple minutes, I listen to this one.

And that 6:42 was the first Motown song to hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart. And the R&B chart as well. Of course the Fab Four made it a big hit again. And then in 1975 the Carpenters made it a #1 song again.

Anyway one day Unmentionable came by on his motorcycle and S. (I ought to give his full name since it would be recognizable!) got on the back and wanted Unmentionable to take him for a ride…HA! Not in this lifetime…I yanked him off and knocked the sh*t out of him…when I went back in the office, three of my female co-workers were singing that one to me…,
