News flash! Obama most frugal president since Ike

From the Marketwatch column at the Wall Street Journal:

“Almost everyone believes that Obama has presided over a massive increase in federal spending, an “inferno” of spending that threatens our jobs, our businesses and our children’s future. Even Democrats seem to think it’s true.

But it didn’t happen. Although there was a big stimulus bill under Obama, federal spending is rising at the slowest pace since Dwight Eisenhower brought the Korean War to an end in the 1950s…..

Over Obama’s four budget years, federal spending is on track to rise from $3.52 trillion to $3.58 trillion, an annualized increase of just 0.4%.”

The column makes many of the points made on this blog in the past. For example, it points out that when Obama took office in 2009, the fiscal 2009 budget year was already four months underway, driven by spending and revenue programs put into place under President Bush.

If we rank spending increases for presidential budgets since 1980, it looks like this:

Reagan, 1982-85: Annual increase of 8.7 percent
Reagan, 1986-89: Annual increase of 4.9 percent
Bush I, 1990-93: Annual increase of 5.4 percent
Clinton, 1994-1997: Annual increase of 3.2 percent
Clinton, 1998-2001: Annual increase of 3.9 percent
Bush II, 2002-2005: Annual increase of 7.3 percent
Bush II, 2006-2009: Annual increase of 8.1 percent
Obama, 2010-2013: Annual increase of 1.4 percent

(It should be noted that in the interest of fairness and accuracy, the above numbers attribute increased 2009 spending from the Obama stimulus to Obama, who initiated it and signed it into law, rather than to Bush. That’s why the annual increase in the chart — 1.4 percent — is higher than the 0.4 percent mentioned in the column excerpt.)

I understand that this data strike directly at the heart of the GOP caricature of Obama. They contradict the foundation of the conservative rant against this president, not to mention the idolatry directed at Ronald Reagan. And since the data cannot be rebutted — the plain numbers are there for all to see — they will simply be ignored lest millions of heads explode simultaneously.

In that light, I thought I would close with this last little bit of data from the Wall Street Journal article:

“After adjusting for inflation, spending under Obama is falling at a 1.4% annual pace — the first decline in real spending since the early 1970s, when Richard Nixon was retreating from the quagmire in Vietnam.

In per-capita terms, real spending will drop by nearly 5% from $11,450 per person in 2009 to $10,900 in 2013 (measured in 2009 dollars).”

Yes – just love the libs and their continued idiotic usage of percentages rather than actual numbers – “rich need to pay their fair share”; “Romney only paid 10% in federal taxes”; “Buffet pays less in percentage than his secretary”; “Obama spending less than any previous president going back to the 50s”, etc., etc.

I finally realize why there a few, very few libs in the engineering field.

Did I miss something? Frugal typical doesn’t mean you are increasing your spending less than someone else but you are actually spending money less than everyone else.

Yes, you did miss something. You can be frugal and increase spending 1%. You can’t be frugal increasing spending 7%. Frugal doesn’t mean you’re decreasing spending either.

There is nothing frugal about spending $3.58 trillion, especially when you take into account the promise that Obama would cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term in office.

Sorry that you can’t take care of your self without the government forcing some one who can take care of their self to give you theeir money. You have failed to understand the basic laws of economic reality:

The Freedom To Try
The Freedom T Buy
The Freedom To Sell
The Freedom To Fail

So which of these are being done to any great degree?

JamVet, 1:46,

Standard, written English is really not so hard if you just concentrate. And what, in your view, is that “one responsibility” that an employer has? You and Bozo are convinced that it is not to make a profit. You apparently think that business was put on this earth to serve the needs of the people, provide jobs and guarantee retirement security. News Flash (as Bookman would say)…… business is in the game for one reason only…. to make a profit for their shareholders. BTW, that evil Bain Capital that you and all of the libs are so upset about….. they gave twice as much money to Democratic candidates in 2008 than they did to Republicans. Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, N’est-ce-pas?

Another lib lie. Anyone with a half a brain can deduce that there were plenty of factors & plenty of people to blame on this:

(1) Second mortgages & HELOCS allowed people to buy more expensive real estate driving the prices up
(2) Lax regulation of the financial sector & multiple deregulation of this sector – opening up CDOs; sub-prime loans
(3) The Fair Housing Act – Making it the “right” of every American to own a house.
etc.
etc.

For a lib to blame this on Bush = plain & simple stupidity

The role of business in this century (Unlike when Henry Ford was around) is:

1. To make a profit for investors

2. To ship jobs overseas

3. To make a profit for investors

4. To charge top dollar prices made by underpaid overseas workers

5. To make a profit for investors

6. To bust unions

7. To make a profit for investors

9. To make a profit for investors

11. To make a profit for investors

12. To make public service look criminal

13. To make a profit for investors

14. To making it only a two class society, rich and poor

15. To make a profit for investors

Curious, Dont act dumb. The person I was addressing thought a company who was going out of business had an obligation to fund a retirement program for the very people who if they had produced the company would most likely still be in business. BTW I too owned sevelal successful business from California to Atlanta, Georgia. I sold them and retired. I was able to employee people at a good wage with better than average benefits because I made sure the businesses were profitable. I suppose you would be one of those who operate at a loss and try to make it up on volume, but what the hell your a nice guy. A business first responsibility is to make a profit without which there will be no jobs. Only the government can deny that and remain around. And Yes, I have laid off people. Didn’t want to. I have never met anyone who enjoyed doing that.

Quote from the New York Times

Obama’s Speech: ‘Too Big to Fail’ Gets Bigger
By EDMUND L. ANDREWS
The third in our series on President Obama’s speech today — a year after the collapse of Lehman Brothers — on financial regulation and the economy.

One of the central goals of President Obama’s regulatory overhaul plan is to rein in banks and financial institutions that are “too big to fail.” The meltdown that followed the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers exactly one year ago, followed by the nightmarish spectacle of bailing out reckless giants like American International Group and Citigroup, are things that policymakers never want to see again.

“We are shipping your jobs to a third-world country because those chumps are poor enough to work 70-hour weeks at $3/hour and not complain, thereby maximizing my personal profits. My wife is nagging me to get a new place in Aspen, send Junior to school abroad for four years, and Christmas in Thailand. And if I don’t throw her a better birthday party than her sister got when HER husband rented out that entire island for a week, I’ll never hear the end of it. So, my loyal workers, I bid you adieu. That means so long, suckers! But hey, this doesn’t have to be forever! Have your people call my people when you’re ready to work 70-hour weeks at $3 per, no benefits or vacation, and sign a card for me every time I leave on one of my fabulous two-month sailing trips, and I MIGHT consider bringing the jobs back to this great country I love so much! So when we get to a deficit of 5 trillion a year, we can even reduce the rate of spending more while we spend more. DC doublespeak. Until we actually have more revenue than we spend, we are dropping a mountain of debt on our chidren and grandchildren and their offspring as well.

It will take revenue increases but it is going to take an overhaul of government as we view it to do it. We (as a nation, Republican, Democrat and independant, male, female, black, white, heterosexual, bisexual and and gay, and anybody I missed) have become a bunch of takers and have bought into some ideological nightmare where we look to the government to take responsibility for everything in our lives and nothing is our fault. If we’re fat, we look to the government to find a solution (appoint a czar, build a department, pass some reg’s, hold conferences and make a big deal out of it) instead of individually getting up and away from the keyboard and working out and controlling our appetites. If we’re sick, we want the government to take care of us (what the hell happened to your family?). If we make bad decisions as citizens (I’m sorry but there is an old adage that says if it sounds too good to be true, it is) or as corporations (why should other people (including other corporations) bail out a corporation that cannot do it on its own), we want the government to make us whole. All this weakens the whole fabric of the collective we as Mary E. likes to comment.

“Um… no. This is not true. There are filters for certain keywords and such, but this is just not true”

Actually, it’s an inside joke. There was a time, not so long ago, when the blog was…shall we say…”messed” up. It would post replies out of order, so sometimes an answer would be on the blog before the question. And we had a poster who…SERIOUSLY…believed that Jay could read what he was typing before he posted it!

But you kind of ignored my first question.

Sorry, I thought most everyone knew the reference.

Adam, here’s a link to this crazy assertion made here about Jay’s incredible cyber powers–

So, The President can’t do anything about rising oil prices……. But has everything to do with them coming down…..And we’re to believe that pot smoking doesn’t harm brain cells…..Beautiful.

Republicans here and elsewhere whined like little babies and pointed fingers at Obama for high oil and gas prices so I thought I would let the little babies know that President Obama heard your cries and fixed it you little boo boo. Now go back to sleep.

Oh, look. Righty’s conservacrackhead blogger’s OWN DATA agrees with me. Clinton DID realize annual surpluses.

Go here:

http://www.usgovernmentspending.com/spending_chart_1990_2010USb_13s1li111mcn_G0f

Set the parameters as follows:
First Row:
$ billion
United States
(anything, doesn’t matter)

Second Row:
Default
Linear
Bar
Stack
Medium
Color
FY ‘04 Budget or later

Third Row:
FY 1990
FY 2010

Fourth Row:
Federal Deficit
No sub-category
Mark the radio button for “Fed”

See how the deficits are NEGATIVE in 1998 – 2001. Negative deficits = surpluses.

So thanks for the assist, Righty. Your own site supports EXACTLY what I said earlier.

I’ll see you in a couple of hours; I’ve got some job applicants to interview now. Because us job creators just roll like that.

Righty’s “evidence” agrees with me and disagrees with him. So now you’re BOTH wrong. See my post at 2:42.

Obama is toast. 5 months is a long time just to bash the other guy. Hope and change is long gone. Pretty easy read after months of this…..even for the one’s who don’t pay attention.

Look what happened when we elected a Texas governor with a horrible track record there…now you want a corporatist plutocratic cultish fake like Romney, with a similarly horrible record as governor, to run us into the ground again? What is wrong with you people?
