More signs — still preliminary — that Iran’s ready to deal

For the moment, I’ll file this under “Believe it when I see it,” but it’s nonetheless encouraging:

From The Washington Post:

“Iran and the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency are near agreement on a plan that could lift the veil on some of the Islamic Republic’s past nuclear research, U.N. officials said Tuesday in an announcement that raised hopes for a more comprehensive nuclear accord when Iranian officials meet with six world powers later in the week.

Yukiya Amano, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said U.N. and Iranian officials settled most of their differences during talks Monday in the Iranian capital and were moving toward a formal pact on making Iran’s nuclear activities more transparent….

“We had expansive and intensive talks in a positive atmosphere,” Amano told Iranian television after the hastily arranged meeting in Tehran.

Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, also hailed what he described as “very good talks” with the IAEA leader. “God willing, we will have good cooperation in the future,” he added.”

In a separate line of negotiations, six major countries including the United States will meet with Iranian representatives beginning Wednesday to discuss a deal in which Iran would dismantle its nuclear infrastructure and surrender its stores of highly enriched uranium. In return, harsh economic sanctions against Iran would be lifted.

The odds of success in that negotiation would probably increase if the IAEA inspection deal is finalized, suggesting that Iran is finally willing to concede to international demands. In the past, however, Iran has repeatedly seemed to agree to deals only to back out of them later.

Will this time prove different? Perhaps so. Iran has never before faced economic sanctions so broad and so well-enforced internationally. It’s also pretty clear that if these negotiations fail, military intervention becomes a much more serious option, and that’s a route that nobody should be eager to travel.

Stay tuned. Success is far from guaranteed, but it’s at least worth the effort. As an old Iranian proverb puts it, “Trust in God — but tie your camel tight.”

F. P. Ayers — “They’re stealing a page from North Korea’s playbook. They’re stalling, they must be close to getting a nuke.”

FWIW, having a nuke isn’t much use unless they have a functional delivery system that can get it where they want it to go. And the raggedy-azz North Korean system probably has the Chinese going ‘dude, watch out where you POINT that thing.’ If the Norks tried to fire off that failure of a satellite launcher they’ve got with a nuclear warhead on top of it, the thing would probably land somewhere in the ocean and go POOF.

They used to produce 13 or 17% I don’t remember which but I think it was actually the higher number. The reason i remember that stat is that when they were waging war Iran and Iraq respectively produced those 2 percentages of world output which equaled 30% of world output at that time. Since then of course I’m sure that through war, economic mismanagement and the degrading of facilities that both are producing substantially less. And that the rest of the world is likewise producing more.

I find it funny that liberals shout personal choices to problems but want someone else to pay to resolve them……and mandate it….

I find it funny that you don’t have the resolve to approach your employer, lay out a logical reason you need a raise, and ask for it. If they won’t pay you what you think you are worth, find someone who will or strike out on your own.

I don’t recall saying anything at all about mandating someone else to resolve your problem.

Well yeah increasing deportation effected those countries disproportionately but that’s not really our fault. We just sent them back to the countries they came from.

Also this is how a lot of those gangs got started. The roots of some of those gangs were that the members were actually unemployed guerilla soldiers. There is nothing more dangerous than a newly unemployed guerilla fighter who has time on his hands and no job.

Take a look at history. After the ending of the Guatemalan and Salvadoran civil wars thousands of newly unemployed guerrilas resulted in a sharp rise in criminal activity in those countries. But their law is harsh and naturally some of them started migrating to the U.S. for criminal activity. So the idea that we exported crime to them is actually the reverse. It started with them exporting crime to us with a lot of aimless young men- often ex guerrillas without a job who had previously only known violence.

Amazingly, there are people who think Iran agreeing to talk is a “new” break through. It is not. Actually Iran has been talking since at least 2003 with the European Union and the United Nations. They have been allowing IAEA inspectors in their country as well. All prior agreements have been changed, lied about and ignored by Iran. This newest ploy is nothing different from many past delaying tactics by the Iranian government. They stall and we agree to the stall. Hopefully, this time it will be different. But, there is nothing in the history of our present administration to make one think this time will be different. I believe their sudden interest in re-opening discussions is not the result of any U.S. initiative or sanctions, it is more than likely their interest is stimulated by Israel’s tough position.

You may be partially correct in some of the origins, but I don’t think many of the founders of most Latin gangs would have been old enough and/or seasoned enough from a military standpoint for that to be a factor in their origins.

Believe it or not, the US military has had an unwitting hand in training gang members in military-styled warfare techniques too.

Increasing deportations of criminal aliens has had a negative effect in the places they’ve been shipped off to

“But someone insinuating that Obama has anything to do with the recent drop in gas prices, well, that’s not dumb at all, right Jay?”

That black guy,

Thanks much. That’s a pretty obvious point that I didn’t even think about. Neither did Jay in his zeal to criticize me.

Fred — “What is wrong with you people? How has a Hispanic face become the face of the “illegals?”

I’ve said it here before (and I’m sure Brosephus remembers), but it bears saying again.

My wife is Hispanic. Born in the US to American parents, but dark hair, dark skin, brown eyes and all that. Speaks English like she was born here, because she was. The only accent she’s got is a bit of West Coast California girl.

My friend’s wife is British. Blond, blue eyes and ‘ere now, wot’s oll this then?’

Guess which one gets pulled out of line at the airport? The born-here one or the obvious foreigner?

They BOTH suck

It’s all in how you phrase the question. Let me p[hrase it to YOU in a different way and see how YOU answer………………

Guess which one gets pulled out of line at the airport? The hot dark haired exotic looking chick or the bleached blond ugly chick?

“you may be partially correct in some of the origins, but I don’t think many of the founders of most Latin gangs would have been old enough and/or seasoned enough from a military standpoint for that to be a factor in their origins.”

You’re right. I’m only partially correct on that. But keep in mind that what I’m also saying is that a lot of young, aimless men who would have up and joined the guerillas and been prime recruits for them during those guerilla years then opted instead for a life of crime instead when there were no guerrilla armies operating. Strange as it seems a guerilla army is also a source of employment.

“Believe it or not, the US military has had an unwitting hand in training gang members in military-styled warfare techniques too.”

Good point. Doesn’t surprise me in the least. I do know of several cases where gang members joined the military, got their training, and then brought it back with them to the streets.

To be fair, my friend’s wife is quite easy on the eyes, but her voice has got a decidedly fingernails + chalkboard quality to it. :)

LOl josef, nope. Never watched the show. But I can see from what you wrote where the joke goes.

What is that other phrase? Steal a little and they call you a thief steal a lot and they make you a king…………….

That phrase is in this tune I’m linking. Listen to it, One of the best mellow guitar solo’s I’ve ever heard. To me it’s as good as Hendrix’s in “The Wind Cries Mary.” It’s a Dylan tune and he’s singing, but he’s actually palatable in this one. I’m gonna split for the evening. I was waiting for an answer from Granny but she obviously split.

Ya’ll have a great evening. Oh and Josef? What’s a sweetheart like you doing in a place like this? ROFL

I’ve told this one before, but…

One evening we were passing the time of day on the street with one of our Latina neighbors, a blonde blue-eyed woman. She and I were speaking Spanish. We were talking about some recent INS raids in the area. Unmentionable, who doesn’t speak it but does understand it, told us “speak English! They’ll haul me in. I’m criminally swarthy.” :-)

The reason why health care passed was insurance costs were rising and onlt the wealthy could afford it.

Audit high illegal employers like companies that deal with construction and hispanic restaurants for their employees paperwork and bank records… You get the idea?

Too funny!

I got “the idea” 26 years ago after St. Ronnie of the RayGun’s 1986 amnesty, sport. You seem to be whining about the open gate long after the fact.
