Gov. Nathan Deal, a Republican, is campaigning around the state for passage of the regional transportation tax. He is also helping to raise private contributions to fund voter outreach in support of the plan.
And he’s not alone.
Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, also a Republican, has hit the speaking circuit as well, warning that the state cannot simply cut its way to prosperity but instead must be willing to invest in itself in order to grow. Passage of the TSPLOST, he says, is critical to that growth.
U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson, also Republicans, have also expressed public support for passage of the TSPLOST, which if approved by voters in July will impose a one-penny sales tax for 10 years to build transportation infrastructure.
Think about that: The four most high-profile Republican officeholders in Georgia — all four of whom have signed the infamous pledge to oppose “any and all efforts to increase taxes” — have expressed public support for a tax hike. In the case of Deal and Cagle, they are out there actively campaigning on its behalf.
And of course, it’s not just any tax hike. If approved by voters in the 10-county metro Atlanta region and by voters in the other 11 regions across the state, it would become the largest single tax hike ever enacted in Georgia. Yet GOP leaders are still supporting it.
That level of support is pretty amazing, given that the current Republican Party is not exactly forgiving to those it considers heretics on tax issues. To the degree it suggests a unified position among Georgia Republicans, it’s also misleading. A good number of lower-profile Republicans oppose passage of the regional TSPLOSTS, including some — such as Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers — who initially voted in favor of putting the question to voters.
So why are top Republicans endorsing the proposal despite the risk it might pose to their political futures?
In part, it’s because opposing passage of the TSPLOST brings risks of its own. While Tea Party Republicans oppose the measure, the state’s business community is strongly supportive, and they’re the folks who help finance statewide political campaigns.
The cynics among us would point out that the business community supports the TSPLOST because they stand to make money off it, and those cynics have a very good point. For example, approval of the tax would create a decade-long stream of work for the construction and asphalt-pouring industries, which are naturally contributing to campaigns to pass the measure.
However, business support for the measure is much deeper and broader than that, and for good reason. Every business in the state relies on transportation infrastructure to facilitate the movement of its workforce and customers and in many cases its raw material and finished product. They know that public investments by previous generations have created the infrastructure that they rely upon on a daily basis, and they also realize that in recent years that infrastructure has been badly underfunded.
Without a fresh infusion of capital, Georgia’s transportation infrastructure will no longer be competitive in a global economy. This week, with the opening of a new international terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the region got another reminder of the importance of such links, and of the leadership required to create them.

” I would cut defense spending and funnel guaranteed money back into the system”
Normal,
Allright. We actually do have some common ground. I would agree wholly on that. I’m of the opinion that we need to cut defense anywhere from 10-15% and possibly as deep as 20%. I just think it has to be done over several years so as not to shock the economy. Same with other cuts. I’m in agreement with you on using proceeds to shore up SS and Medicare. Personally I am sick and tired of 36 bases in Germany and other enormous military expenditures. The Germans and others need to start providing for their own damn defense.
As for making Medicare more like the prescription part D plan I would be all for it. I know that you and others see it as making insurance companies rich but I can assure you the margins are very small. On top of that the Part d drug plan is the only health care initiative that govt has come up with that has not only come in under budget but substantially under budget. It works very well relative to other programs.
Anyway we may still disagree on some things but that’s cool. At least we found some common ground on needed cuts.

Bernie Marcus wrote an op-ed piece in Investors Business Daily this week where he said that Home Depot would never have been able to succeed as a new company under the Obama administration. He said:”Over the past three years Washington has issued more than 10,000 rules that impose an estimated $16 B in new costs. Small businesses , who often lack the teams of lawyers or compliance officers to sort through everything they’re required to do, are suffering disproportionately.” Yet the conversation continually devolves to social issues like abortion, gay rights, birth certificates, and dogs. I doubt very seriously that Romney will spend much time on the birther debate, just as I doubt that Obama will ever have anything meaningful to contribute about how to grow the economy. The past four years have proven that he is clueless on how to help small business and simply out of his league.

Now that you now know who the Blackstone Group is and what they do I’ll help once again to bring you up to speed a bit further. You see the Obama campaign ran an ad criticizing Romney for his association with Bain Capital a private equity firm like Blackstone. The ad had misinformation within the content that even had some Democrats criticizing the Obama campaign for running it. The very next day after the ad ran, Hamilton James the CEO of Blackstone threw a huge fund raising dinner event for Obama, while the left was running around calling Bain and Romney vulture capitalists. Okay, Zimmerman had some actual injuries. However, I can’t help but remember his family’s claim that his head was repeatedly slammed into the sidewalk, for over a minute, and that Zimmerman was beaten until he was nearly unconscious (but still had the wherewithal to grab his gun and shoot). Yet, his injuries did not warrant a trip to the hospital. Sending an injured party to the hospital, as a precautionary measure, is pretty routine. Certainly, having one’s head repeatedly slammed into a concrete sidewalk would necessitate a trip to the ER. Yet Zimmerman’s injuries were so superficial that he was treated by EMS in the back of a police car. Something is still not adding up in my head.
Secondly, Zimmerman’s injuries do not prove who initiated the physical altercation. If Zimmerman had accosted Trayvon, the teen would have cause to defend himself. A person is not allowed to start a fight with someone, find himself on the losing end, kill his opponent and then claim self defense.
Lastly, with regards to Zimmerman’s motives, let’s not forget that he had a history of calling 911 (50 times within a year, if I recall correctly). That type of hyper-vigilant behavior speaks volumes about his character, and perhaps about his frame of mind on the night in question. Furthermore, let’s remember that he said, “These a**holes always get away,” implying that he was not going to let yet another one get away. The 911 call is pretty damning.

When Bain Capital invested in Steel Dynamics they found a site in DeKalb County Indiana. They then asked for a tax break to locate their plant there. The tax break, probably a property tax break caused Steel Dynamics to spend 375 million dollars building the plant in DeKalb County that ultimately employed 6000 workers who pay local and state taxes and spend teir pay checks in the area. This was and is an economic boon to DeKalb County Indiana. Had the Bain invested company not been given those tax breaks, that investment and those jobs would now be somewhere else and DeKalb, County Indiana would not be collecting much property tax on the cavant property.. What the left calls corporate welefare, the right calls economic progress and what the left calls a tax give away the local politicians call tax revenue.

Bernie Marcus had no agenda
Here’s a blast from Bernie “no agenda” Marcus’ past:
“This is the demise of a civilization,” moaned Bernie Marcus, cofounder and former CEO of The Home Depot, during an Oct. 17 conference call about card check. “This is how a civilization disappears. I’m sitting here as an elder statesman, and I’m watching this happen, and I don’t believe it.”
Mr. Marcus sketched out the doomsday scenario for his listeners, with unions going after what he called the “low hanging fruit” and proceeding to organize workers in industry after industry. He had taken it upon himself to notify the nation’s CEOs of the danger, but they were not yet grabbing their guns. “This is as important as anything that’s ever happened to these companies. And they’re not reacting, and they’re not fighting. The old time fighters are gone.”
But in the class war, as in the real deal, there are always ways of motivating the yellow. “If a retailer has not gotten involved with this, if he has not spent money on this election, if he has not sent money to Norm Coleman and these other guys,” Mr. Marcus said, apparently referring to Republican senators facing tough re-election fights, then those retailers “should be shot; should be thrown out of their goddamn jobs.”

WHY has infrastructure “been badly underfunded” in recent years? To to what extent (who decides how much)? Where is the infrastructure money going? 5 Ways to Spot a B.S. Political Story in Under 10 Seconds
This turdstorm of pointless click-bait filler is a problem for anyone who wants to be an informed voter. To learn anything useful, you need to be able to sort through all of the garbage to find the actual information and insight. So let me just tell you right now that you can safely ignore any story if …
#5. The Headline Contains the Word “Gaffe”
Basically, It’s … a politician accidentally misspoke in a way that made him or her look silly, and the opponents are pouncing on it.
If you’re new to following politics, trust me when I say you will grow to absolutely hate the word “gaffe.” Go to a news portal or a politics blog and search for the word “gaffe” and watch the server nearly burst into flames trying to serve results.
[...]
“Obama gaffe,” “Romney gaffe,” “Perry gaffe,” “Biden gaffe” — every party gets it equally. The word just means “embarrassing mistake,” and I have literally never heard it used outside of the context of a meaningless, bullsh#t filler political news story. I’m not normally an angry man, but it’s such an obnoxious word that if somebody at work used “gaffe” in a sentence I would fling my goddamned coffee into his face.
As they say–read the whole thing.

Neitier you nor I were there, so we have only the known facts to deal with colored by our personal experience and prejudice. I believe the facts suport Zimmermans report of the attack. He said he was returning to his car after the 911 operator, who BTW is not a police officer or a representive of the police, when he was attacked, knocked to the ground and was being beaten by Travon. Now even if Zimmerman did instigate the incident, that does not relieve Travon of the responsibility to control himself. Zimmerman stated he believed his life was in danger. His injuries, head wounds, broken nose, was still being beaten by Travon while Travon was sitting on top of him substantiates his version and that of an eye witness who saw Travon on top of Zimmerman beating him. Attorneys when gven the latest facts believe Zimmerman’s story. This will be settled in court. I believe Zimmerman walks.

It’s just like 911, they didn’t have to know the plot, just be on alert for hijackings that summer, which they were by the way but only for gov’t officials; no hijackings, no 911…

Adam,
Bottom line is that vulture capitalism is not what Bain capital is about. Certainly there were some companies that they tried to save and turn around and couldn’t and then had to end up selling off what was left of the company to salvage what they could. That’s life and not every business is going to be successful. Surely you understand that.
But the primary purpose of the company was to identify turnaround situations or undercapitalized companies and turn them into successful enterprises. Here are some of the household whos who business names that they have been involved with. Do these companies represent “vulture capitalism”?
“Bain grew, and in the process it hired a lot of business analysts and other support personnel. The companies they invested in or acquired in buyout deals became hugely successful enterprises: Domino’s Pizza, Sealy, Sports Authority, Dunkin’ Donuts, Toys R Us, Burger King and countless other firms whose expansion over the years have created thousands of jobs.”

Jay says Georgia won’t be competitive in a “GLOBAL” economy without a high speed rail! I have a better idea and it may even be cheaper. Dig a canal from Atlanta to the Savanah River and widen it to the Atlantic. We could load and unload cargo containers right down town. That would be GLOBAL. I am afraid a train from downtown to Marietta or Macon or both just doesn’t pass the global smell test.

Joe cool,
No it doesn’t because we don’t know what happened after he hung up the phone with her. We don’t know if T ran behind a building or if he directly confronted Z. We do not know. I can’t make that point any simpler for you, kamchak and others.

After hearing that just released tape from the eyewitness I don’t see how the prosecution can get a conviction in the Travon Martin case. It appears to support Zimmerman’s version.

Normal,
I wish I could remember who it was but someone on here that seemed to really know the Fla. law pretty well was talking about it and explained the high bar the state would need to exceed to prove Z was lying. In any event I grow weary of the whole situation and I wish people would just not worry about it and let the system run its course. Damn shame that the young man died and I think we all agree on that.

Here’s an idea: instead of taxing Georgians on what they purchase, let’s impose a tax on imports coming through the Port of Savannah.
If you’re gonna buy cheap, Chinese crap, you may as well help our infrastructure in the process.
I wonder how many of you remember the Georgia 400 toll? Remember that it was supposed “go away?”

Why? To save their precious jobs. The gop should change their name to tea party..

Joe Cool,
I see what you’re saying. Obviously that would change things if she is to be believed and if she immediately stated that as her testimony. But I think what we need to have is his full story explaining this discrepancy and his testimony. And even then I’m still not sure that this gives trayvon the right to physically attack Z. If someone confronts you as a stranger in their neighborhood you do not automatically have the right to attack them. Otherwise I would have whupped a few asses in my time. A lot to sort out. Let the system play itself out.

Here is the opposite of the Bain Capital Steel Dynamics tax break. Where I live,we have plenty of vacant land accessable to I 75. The land is just sitting there not producing much revenue and frankly is an eye sore. A few years ago, a major retailer wanted to locate here and acquire that land. The retailer was a large mail order on line retailer as well as on premises retailer. The retailer did not ask for any tax breaks that I know of except it did not want to collect Georgia sales tax on its on line or mail order sales. The state and county refused to give them that exemption. So the company went to Chattanooga and opened their facility which employs between 200 and 400 people. The vacant property is still vacant, at least 200 people wo would have been paying taxes in Georgia do not have jobs and our county is hurting for tax revenue. I wish I could tell you the stupid politicians were Democrats. The idiots who made this decision were Republicans. Stupid is as stupid does regardless of whether Republican or Democrat. The shame is that the Democrats have moved so far to the left that their anti business attitude supports what the Republicans did in this case. The Democrats will have to get over hating business or they wil never get off of welefare and our nation will never progress from the doldrums it is in. To save this country from destroying itself we need to elect politicians that will be agressive in attracting business. The recession will never end until a majority understand the answer to our economic problems lies with business not government.
