Travelin’ music for those headed “Home”

It’s mid-May and the warm weather is here. Of course, it’s been here since February, so it’s no big deal I guess. The march of the seasons are now summer to spring and then back to summer.

But hey, I don’t mean to get all political on a Friday afternoon. It’s just that it’s neighborhood festival time again in Atlanta. This weekend offers Tunes from the Tombs in historic Oakland Cemetery, with bands playing at five different stages scattered through the property. We attended at last year’s inaugural event and had a (sur)real blast. Nothing makes you more grateful to be alive than sitting in a cemetery drinking a cold beer, enjoying the sun, the music and the company.

And two weeks from now comes the Virginia-Highland Summerfest, featuring more live music and beer in addition to hundreds of craft and artist booths. Among the highlights will be Lousiana’s own Marc Broussard, featured in tonight’s video.

Before we get to that, though, I’d like to make a quick announcement. I thought we’d try “crowdsourcing” an occasional Friday night music kickoff, and here’s how it would work:

Send me an email at jbookman@ajc.com with a link to a favorite Youtube video, plus two or three paragraphs explaining why you chose it. Maybe you just love the song or artist; maybe it means something to you personally. Whatever the story, send it along and I’ll post it to kick off next week’s music. If we get enough interest, we can do it once or twice a month.

And now, as promised, Marc Broussard:

Right from the beginning, I knew that song had nothing to do with weed. But I was never quite sure exactly what that famous line in the song meant until I read it years later…

‘As kings and queens bow and play for you.’ – It’s about Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

Two searing guitar solos and a song that simply demands to be played LOUD!

Jam, have you seen “Amazing Journey” yet? It goes into detail as to how the Who was realy five guys on lead – lead bass, lead drums, lead vocals, and lead guitar. The whole segment on how Entwistle impacted bass playing is just sublime as is the segment on how Moon’s drumming is totally different from everyone else’s.

I always liked the Who but this documentary exploded my interest – it really shows what is going on in the music. One of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen.

and i’ve seen alot of friggin documentaries.

Remember those little documetnary shorts they used to show us in school? Each was a little “this is how you should be/live/work” segment? All were filmed by government and most appeared to be from the military.

I used to love those things – they were kinda creepy in a Tim Burton kind of way.

Finn, I must see that film.

Mick, really fine choice with Teacher.

I’m really feeling the high school mojo this month. Maybe because I just watched American Graffiti . And forty years ago I was getting ready to leave home and start my own voyage.

And tomorrow evening I’m going to a graduation pool party for a young lady I’ve known since she was born.

The spiral moves on…

32 years ago today I awoke and stepped out on my back porch to watch Mt St Helens erupting. It was awe inspiring to say the least. I climbed up on our roof and just sat and watched for hours. It went on for days and within a day we were covered in a layer of ash an inch thick, very surreal. It was Oct of that year we moved down here to the ATL… the change in culture from there to here, too was very surreal… Now I have a love hate relationship with GA and ATL , but I’m stuck here for the interim due to an ex-wife and two children whom I refuse to leave behind… The politics here don’t bother me as much as the city does, to be honest the two places I’d like to move most are as conservative or even more conservative than GA… Sarasota FLA or Wichita KA… Oh well ya’ll are stuck with for the next 7 years at least…

Jm,
FB was all about hype, they have no real revenue stream and the only way to achieve such is to do things that will drive users away, throw in questionable items like paying a billion for Instagram, and a fickle user base always on the hunt for the next cool thing, and it’s just not a good long term picture. You’d think after the last 10 years investors would be wiser than to get all geeked out about an offering like this.

Rightwing Troll,

You’re a good dad for staying to be near your kids.

Wichita, huh? I was born there but haven’t been back since 1971. Though I would love to see the tiny town of Perth that I grew up in. So many memories of innocence and childhood. Perhaps it’s best to leave them there in that two room schoolhouse, those dirt roads and wheat fields.

Forty years ago this month, at the age of 17, I enlisted in the US Air Force. I spent the summer in Denver, awaiting boot camp in October. What a crazy, wonderful time to be coming of age.

One of the many fantastic songs from that summer…

Mick, you may already know that little old Wichita is the Air Capital of the World.

Stearman, Cessna, Mooney and Beech were all founded in Wichita in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

The city experienced a population explosion during World War II when it became a major manufacturing center for airplanes needed in the war effort. By 1945, an average of 4.2 bombers were being produced daily in Wichita.

Cessna and Hawker Beechcraft remain based in Wichita today, along with Learjet and Spirit AeroSystems.

Throw is a bunch of Airbus folks and that gargantuan Boeing facility at McConnell AFB, and there you have it.

One other nod to Kansas aviation – one of my great heroes, Amelia Earhart, is from Atchison.

From that not quite endless summer. And one of the greatest pop songs of its day…

My dad’s family is from Tulsa.. poorer than dirt… but happy and long living. We used to go visit and I’d sit and count train cars on the tracks as they went by… Love me some Coney Island hot dogs from the place downtown.

Boeing has sold off a bunch of their stuff to another company that they now outsource to. My family grew up a stone’s throw from the Boeing plant and the AFB, McConnell I believe it is… we moved to Mulvane, just south of Derby, for a couple years, a town so small at the time, the grain elevator was probably larger than the entire downtown area, it’s not much bigger now. Joyland finally closed down…

He’s from Raymond, Mississippi and died in Chicago, but you gotta love the name, Kansas Joe McCoy.

Along with another way cool name, Memphis Minnie, he penned this monster, covered to perfection by an obscure little English band.

And covered here again, by four smokin’ hot ladies…
