Why are the Catholic bishops investigating the Girl Scouts?

What in the name of Juliet Gordon Low is going on here?

Apparently lacking anything closer to home that might be worthy of investigation, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has launched an official inquiry into the Girl Scouts.

According to the Washington Post, “Potentially at stake is whether troops can continue meeting in Catholic churches, and whether many Catholic girls, who make up a quarter of the nation’s 3 million Girl Scouts, will continue in scouting as the organization marks its 100th year.”

And what exactly have the Girl Scouts done to attract such scrutiny? Nobody really knows for sure, and the bishops aren’t being clear. Over the past few years, we’ve seen sporadic outbursts of conservative anger at the Girl Scouts over alleged connections to Planned Parenthood and similar groups, but Scout leaders say such rumors are ridiculous and no evidence to the contrary has ever been produced.

But where did it come from? Where this misbegotten seed germinate?

Well, like so many of these right-wing conspiracy theories, this one seems rooted in irrational fear of that most nefarious of organizations out to undermine the United States, the United Nations.

In an even-handed statement put out in January 2011, the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry described the allegations this way:

“In 2010 several issues arose concerning GSUSA (Girl Scouts of the United States of America) triggered by a March meeting at the United Nations where GSUSA supposedly distributed inappropriate materials on human sexuality and a campaign was begun to have the Catholic Church and all her agencies sever ties with GSUSA. These issues included the GSUSA relationship with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and the GSUSA relationship with Planned Parenthood, both of which called into question GSUSA’s position on providing resources and programs on human sexuality. The fundamental accusation is that GSUSA distributes materials reflecting an official stance contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church on marriage, abortion, contraception, and sexuality.

Our practice as an organization is to investigate such matters by going directly to the sources involved so we contacted GSUSA and several of those who had made accusations concerning the UN meeting. In a March 16 e-mail to NFCYM membership we shared the GSUSA response to the UN meeting, which included in part:

“The Girls Only Workshop was hosted by GSUSA, UNICEF‟s Working Group on Girls, Girls Learn International, and The Grail. The meeting was only open to the girls and participating sponsors. The girls received a copy of the only document they were working on, titled ‘The Girls Statement’. No other documents were given to the girls as part of the event. The room in question was also used to host other events over the course of the multi-day conference. Prior to our girls entering the room, we did not ’sanitize’ the room to ensure that no trash or other items were left behind. GSUSA was not contacted by C-Fam regarding its initial story to discuss the facts of this event. Had they applied these basic journalistic standards, the true details of this event would have been reported.”

OK, so what is C-Fam, the group that originally leveled these charges?

The Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute is a deeply right-wing organization that sees itself as a watchdog against U.N. incursions on our national sovereignty and against U.N. attempts to subvert American and Catholic morality. According to its website, C-Fam’s “vision” is “the preservation of international law by discrediting socially radical policies at the United Nations and other international institutions.”

In 2010, C-Fam charged that at a UN meeting, the Girl Scouts had distributed to young girls a “sex guide” titled “Happy, Healthy and Hot: A Young Person’s Guide to Their Rights, Sexuality and Living with HIV.” The Girl Scouts, as explained in the excerpt above, said no such thing happened. But that appears to be the genesis of this whole crusade. As one indication of just how ridiculous the whole thing has become, in 2010 C-FAM announced new evidence of the alleged ties, explaining that it “has learned that at least one regional director of the Girl Scouts comes from the ranks of Planned Parenthood personnel. In 2004, the Great Plains Council of Girl Scouts, representing 11,000 girls, hired Beverly Todd Nolte as their CEO. Previously, Nolte had held marketing and lobbying positions with Planned Parenthood of Nebraska and Council Bluffs.
”

What we appear to be seeing, in other words, is a confluence between a rather bizarre conspiracy theory with the growing politicization of at least some segments of the American Catholic Church, with the Girl Scouts as the latest helpless victim of that trend.

“Exactly why do you object to the Church’s investigation of distribution of sexual materials to young girls without parental supervision?”

other than the fact that the rumor was started by a right-wing nutcase group and that there’s no evidence that it ever happened?

RB: Anybody else see Komen’s participation and receipts are down 40% from last year? Seems you liberals aren’t doing your part to prop them up after you demanded they cave to your wishes. not giving your fair share.

Your dementia is showing again RB – no one DEMANDED they cave to anything. They caved when they saw all those articles, emails, phone calls, and letters coming in saying that all those women who gave their time, effort, and MONEY to the them in the name of the “cause”; had decided to give their money to some one ELSE. That’s when they quickly caved. It seems, (gasp), they were more concerned about the “donated money”; than they were about “Planned Parenthood”. Its good to have priorities.

Frankly, both of these organizations creep me out — for different reasons, and to widely differing degrees. GSUSA (aka The Cookie Cult) literally inserts trillions of junk food calories into a segment of the population whose self-esteem now throughout their entire lives will be inextricably linked to their body image and weight. (Right or wrong, folks, it is what it is.) This makes no sense to me, and thank you, NO, I would not like to buy 78,000 empty calories to place around my midsection, for which I’ll have to both work out like crazy and deprive myself later to remove.

As for the Catholic Church, uh… whatever floats your spiritual boat is none of my beeswax. Just don’t ask for my approval on the specifics. Thanks!

Sorry, but unless and until the RCC makes a clean breast of it with regard to the child molestations, this ridiculous ‘we’re just trying to be thorough in our investigation’ is nothing more than an excuse of convenience. A misguided investigation of the GS isn’t some form of penance for the church’s prior sins.

Atlanta mom, for people like you Adam and joe to throw the fit you did over Komen’s decision to sever ties with PP and not step up to close the funding gap you caused is disgusting. Pay up.

Btw the gap in ATL is $600k. Maybe clooney will help you with that. I’m sure he’s good for a $20.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I don’t follow your logic RB. I supported Susa Komen for the cure for the work they were doing. Then they decided to hire Karen Handel and get all political. I didn’t support them as a political wing of the Republican party so I stopped supporting them at all.

While thye are certainly the largest (and apparently over bloated) organization for breast cancer they certainly aren’t the only. When they showed that they wanted to be a political arm of the Republican party then they lost all credibility. Why George Clooney needs to send them $20 I have no clue. What’s your “logic” there? As to why I need to send them anything? Who the hell are you who to tell me who to donate to. You sound like a socialist.

When it comes to the boobs, I now donate to and support an organization that is ALL about the boobs, not all about the Republican parties war on abortion. The two are separate issues. if YOU are interested in supporting breast cancer as an issue above and beyond your Republican political agenda I would suggest this as an alternative solution. They work for Breast cancer research, not political agenda’s.

“Then your wrath was centered around those terribly homophobic Boy Scouts because it wasn’t “fair”. I don’t have many warm fuzzy feeling for the Catholic Church and never have. Each of these private organizations can do what the hell they please.”

If the BSA expects to be permitted to use DoD facilities and equipment, then I expect them to not discriminate in their membership. Otherwise, they can go find other places for their functions.

If Augusta National doesn’t want to admit women, they have every right do as they please. It is none of the Catholic Church’s business what the Girl Scouts do as well as it none of anyone’s business what Augusta National or any other private organization does.”

You miss the point, but I doubt you’d get it even if it were explained to you.

Joe, you aren’t fooling anybody with your whining about the way the question was asked. You aren’t going to answer it no matter how it’s asked because you never want to be accountable for your opinions on anything. Go on kidding yourself if you want but you aren’t fooling anybody else.

K71 — “So where was all of this liberal indignation when the Boy Scouts didn’t want gay scout masters?”

It’s still around. I, for one, won’t support the BSA because they won’t admit atheists.

Joe, 2:16,

The point is that each of these entities are private. You got that? Private!!! It’s none of your damn business what they do. I am not so sure that they lose any sleep over whether you like them or do not. If the Boy Scouts don’t want gay members, they have every right to exclude them. If Augusta National doesn’t want women in their club, so be it. If the Girl Scouts feel that it is important to distribute literature on a subject they feel meets their beliefs, they have every right to do just that. And whether or not you like it is of little importance to anyone but you. Perhaps it is you who is missing the point.

You never answered MY question you hypocrite. Most of us never SAW your so called question and so far you have lacked the balls to repeat it. You just want to harangue Joe about it……

So man up. Answer MY question and repost YOUR question. What’s so f’ing hard about that?

Maybe it’s time to put the Nuns in charge. I mean, let’s face it: The all-male Bishops just don’t do well with children (and girls are not boys missing penises)!

I’m not going to take the time to find it. RB made an assertion yesterday about “those who back illegals being able to vote”. When asked by JHM early in the day and myself last night, he thought he would outsmart everyone and ask questions in return as if that somehow would back up his still unsubstantiated bs.

I’ve asked him to back it up or make a retraction. From there we can proceed with the overall topic. The best cop out he has now is to say it is an “opinion” and because his questions were not answered that is his “proof”. I still do not know what that thought process entails and unable to follow it.

Oh well, moving on

“Just crazy. Was she even alive when the incident happened?”

Betsy Lauber as spokesperson for the family. Maybe she’s just the best talker. If the family of “the victim” says it didn’t happen, I’ll take their word for it.

But Romney will now be forever stained by the reports of this “incident”, and Jay’s choir will be bringing it up at every opportunity for 100 years.
