Romney bullying allegations grow legs

The stories about Mitt Romney’s bullying behavior as a high school student, first reported in the Washington Post, do not appear to be going away.

Quite the contrary.

From ABC News:

“One former classmate and old friend of Romney’s – who refused to be identified by name – said there are “a lot of guys” who went to Cranbrook who have “really negative memories” of Romney’s behavior in the dorms, behavior this classmate describes as “evil” and “like Lord of the Flies.”

The classmate believes Romney is lying when he claims to not remember it.

“It makes these fellows [who have owned up to it] very remorseful. For [Romney] not to remember it? It doesn’t ring true. How could the fellow with the scissors forget it?” the former classmate said.”

While saying that he does not remember specifics, Romney offered an apology of sorts in a radio interview with Fox News:

“I’m not going to be too concerned about their piece. They talk about the fact that I played a lot of pranks in high school and they describe some that, well you just say to yourself, ‘back in high school, well, I did some dumb things’ and if anybody was hurt by that or offended obviously I apologize but overall high school years were a long time ago.”

Romney also says that at the time, he had no idea that the victims of his pranks may have been gay, since they didn’t come out of the closet until much later. That’s quite plausible. In one case in which Romney is described as leading an attack on a student, the victim’s alleged mistake was to have worn his hair too long.

The Romney campaign is reportedly reaching out to former classmates, asking them to come forward and vouch for the candidate’s behavior and character. It’ll be interesting to hear what they have to say. This story has a ways to play out yet.

Two closing points:

– It’s important to note that Romney was 18 at the time. None of us is the person that we were at 18. Norms of social behavior were also different back then.

– That said, the behaviors described are troubling. Having learned of the allegations, The Washington Post had an obligation to report them. If you read the entire , lengthy Post story, it does a good job of putting the allegations into context, including anecdotes that speak well of the future GOP nominee. Neither the story nor Romney should be judged based on incomplete information.

And further to the point I began making @ 7.20 in response to RB’s typical cluelessness?

Most people draw a distinction between OBama’s indiscretions and Romney’s because, you see, a relatively harmless little dalliance with recreational drugs – whether legal or not — is something virtually everyone can own up to.

Organizing a group of thugs to hunt down some kid who just doesn’t look right, and cut his hair while he screamed for help? When you’re old enough to know better and are fully aware that what you’re doing is wrong?

Well no. Most people haven’t done anything remotely like that. At least not the “organizing a group of thugs” bit, which dovetails nicely with Mitt’s career as a vulture capitalist at Bain.

But like I said, I really don’t think the so-called liberal media will give this anything like the attention the Sh-t Float Liars received in 2004. If they were really biased liberal, as conservatives virtually ALL claim, they would. It’d be a top story at cnn.com; it’d top the news.google.com amalgamator.

It isn’t; it doesn’t. It’ll wind up just being another reason a lot of people who already find Romney kind of a jerk, will continue finding him kind of a jerk.

I was bullied. I hardly see it as an impediment to being president. 50 years after the fact, the DEMOCRATS ARE in full RETREAT when they put something like this over the airways and it shows how desperate the media is to put non news in the news. I just think that, after last month’s screed against American nuns paying too much attention to the poor and the sick and not enough attention to birth control and abortion, this story shows a VERY disturbing trend

the Catholic Church has always had a crappy attitude towards the concept of women as equals – this just further cements it that they are MORE concerned about women NOT having control over their own lives than they are about education, esteem and a positive future

The global banking giant HSBC is a “criminal” operation, charges a former officer for the company’s southern New York region in a video interview with WND.

John Cruz, a former vice president and relationship manager, has turned over to WND more than 1,000 pages of documents, including customer account ledgers for dozens of companies through which, he charges, the financial institution was laundering money each month.

“It was supposed to be a shipping company that does over $2 million a year in transactions,” Cruz said, recognizing the HSBC computer-generated account ledger. “But the ledger shows millions and millions of dollars in transaction, but the transactions are all through PayPal and American Express.”

Cruz also described his visit to see the company in person.

“There were two employees on site that didn’t speak English,” he recalled. “The only evidence of any packaging being done was a couple of small boxes in the corner.”

WND presented Cruz Exhibit B, showing a redacted HSBC account ledger for a company with over $1.34 million in deposits and $1.23 million in withdrawals in a one-month period from July 21, 2009, to Aug. 20, 2009.

The devastated mother of 10-year-old Ashlynn Conner spoke up about the bullying that she says led to her daughter’s suicide. Stacy Conner broke down, as she recounted how kids at school and around the neighborhood would tease the girl.

“They’d call her a slut,” said a tearful Conner, “Ashlynn’s ugly. She’s fat.”

Conner, a single mother, says it’s been going on for years. She knew her daughter was picked on, but she didn’t know what to do. They had talked about the bullying before, but Conner says Ashlynn never told her things were this bad. The girl had asked to be home-schooled after coming home Thursday. When her mother said no, Ashlynn’s sister found her the next day in a bedroom closet. She had hanged herself with a scarf.

“I thought my kids were strong,” sobbed Conner, “That my words to them for guidance and advice would have more weight than what these kids were saying. I was wrong.”

Ashlynn Conner was a 5th grader at Ridge Farm Elementary. She recently made it onto the school’s Honor Roll and aspired to become a veterinarian.

“She loved animals,” said her Grandmother, Lory Hackney. “She didn’t want to see any of them sick or hurting.”

WCIA reached out to the Georgetown Ridge Farm School District. No one was available this weekend, but they did issue a news release.

“The Board of Education is very saddened at the tragic loss of one of our children. Our hearts go out to her family in this time of loss, said the release. The district said counselors would also be available Monday to speak with students and family.

Ashlynn Conner’s family is heartbroken. They’re still struggling to cope with the loss, hoping that sharing Ashlynn’s story can keep it from happening to someone else.

“I don’t know what its gonna take to stop it,” said Conner, “but no child should ever feel like they have to kill themselves to stop that kind of pain.”

A 14-year-old girl whose Facebook page says she loves ” all my haterz” has committed suicide after enduring two years of bullying by her female classmates, her family claims.

Eden Wormer, an eighth grader at Cascade Middle School in Vancouver, Wash., hanged herself Wednesday.

The girl’s family told ABC News affiliate KATU that she committed suicide after two years of being bullied by girls in her class. Wormer’s older sister, Audri, told the station that Eden changed her appearance several times in an effort to fit in, and begged her older sister not to report the bullying because she thought it would only make the problem worse.

After nearly single-handedly pushing gay marriage to the forefront of the presidential campaign and inadvertently pressuring President Barack Obama to declare his support for same-sex unions, there was only one thing left for Vice President Joe Biden to do: apologize.

Biden’s mea culpa came Wednesday in the Oval Office, shortly before the president sat for a hastily arranged interview in which he told the American people that he now supported gay marriage.

No, it has nothing to do with entitlement, it’s more of a self esteem issue. Never the less, it’s a brave new world out there and all I can say about it is that I’m pretty thankful that I experienced a completely different time warp. I’m not going to judge this because you always meet the client where the client is at…

I didn’t say they were the problem, I said a$$ holes like you are the problem.

we’re talking 360-degree harassment … in person … online … at school … at home … these kids are living in HELL and it’s a-holes like you that tell them that they’re part of the problem

Holding a kid down while you perform some physical act on him is something you can be arrested for. But some fools think it’s just “part of growing up”.

And a Presidential candidate who does it somehow can’t remember it… and issues a non-apology for it. And the same fools here are happy to support him, because they’ve been brainwashed into thinking life will be better for them with that type of candidate in the White House.

Pathetic fools.

“And a Presidential candidate who does it” – He does it now? Still? You’ve got proof of this I’m sure.

Recon – ooooo … so my saying that they SHOULDN’T be persecuted online and in school is actually the cause of the suicides ..

And a Presidential candidate who does it

Yeah, my bad on tense.

Like I said, though: it’s not so much that he was a bully in high school. It’s that his memory of his dad laying off workers makes him laugh NOW. You can take the boy out of high school, but it seems you can’t take the pathology out of the boy.

Mick, that’s what the fake Christian, dead red Republican society has brought us, adults who aren’t learning that just telling the damn truth is the right thing to do…

So, the liberal logic seems to prevail here that we should go through another four years of lies, deception, favoritism, lack of leadership, big government, strangling debt, lack of domestic growth, homes in the tank, unemployment still over 8%…… just because Romney might of bullied some kid with blond hair in high school. Makes sense to me.

I think there’s a reason Romney was a 2nd-stringer in 2008, promoted to 1st team this year
by default.

from BLOOMBERG:

Obama Winning Investors by 49%-38% Against Romney in Poll
May 10, 2012

Global investors increasingly prefer President Barack Obama to Republican challenger Mitt Romney and most say they believe the incumbent will remain in the White House for another four years.

I stopped still after reading this:

Mick, that’s what the entitlement society has brought us, children who aren’t learning to cope with adversity even the growing up process is being politicized.

You mean like the adversity of being anally raped at Penn State?
Or dragged to your death?

What the hell is wrong with you?

RECON – you are a piss poor example of a human being.

Oh yeah? And so has Obama’s antics when he was in high school.. Smoking dope beating women and snorting cocaine… Just the life of your average student in the 70’s LOL… I’m amazed that you freaks on the left don’t realize that when you try and make up an issue about Romney you don’t fact check how pathetic Obama was in his youth….

So, 71’s logic seems to prevail here, among the Friends of the Lying Republicans Club, that we should go through another four years of lies, given that his socialist communist Marxist candidate just got caught red-handed lying.

Brilliant…

This whole thing reminds me of a cartoon of a woman standing on a sinking ship named the United States of America, holding tightly to the rail as the ship goes down, yelling , “At least they didn’t take away my birth control pills”.
