It seems that last winter, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, her husband, Marcus, and their children applied to become citizens of Switzerland, an option that is open to them under Swiss law because the parents of Marcus Bachmann had both been Swiss citizens. (The Bachmann family kept their American citizenship.)
I can only imagine the freakout on the right if a prominent Democratic legislator — a one-time candidate for president with a significant following — decided that American citizenship wasn’t good enough and had pledged dual loyalties to a European country that allows same-sex marriage and offers universal health care with compulsory health insurance.
Oh, the harrumphing we would see.
As it is, the case creates a head-hurting degree of cognitive dissonance for many conservatives that a dose of Goody’s headache powder just can’t cure. On the one hand, this is a clear act of disloyalty! On the other hand, it’s Michele Bachmann!
Take the reaction of Mark Krikorian, head of the right-wing Center for Immigration Studies and a prominent figure in conservative circles. Just to let you know where he’s coming from, Krikorian actually argued back in 2009 that Americans shouldn’t “defer” to Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor in the pronunciation of her name. Instead, we should insist on what he called “the natural English pronunciation, SO-tuh-my-er, like Niedermeyer,” because “there are basically two options — the newcomer adapts to us, or we adapt to him.”
In other words, “Don’t tell us what your name is. We’ll tell YOU what your name is.”
In this case, Krikorian is himself suffering competing loyalties. He considers Bachmann “highly capable and no doubt a patriot” (although he also acknowledges that “I don’t think she’s ready to be president”). But he’s deeply offended by what he calls “a formal declaration of divided allegiance, civic bigamy, if you will.”
So how does Krikorian resolve his cognitive dissonance? Like this:
“The fact that even a patriot like Bachmann would do something like this is testament to how thoroughly the moral relativism of the post-national Left has permeated our culture.”
That, ladies and gentlemen, is a classic.

-Michele Bachmann to withdraw her Swiss citizenship during her bid for re-election-
In a statement, Bachmann said she did not want to leave the impression that she was uncommitted to the United States.
Today I sent a letter to the Swiss Consulate requesting withdrawal of my dual Swiss citizenship, which was conferred upon me by operation of Swiss law when I married my husband in 1978. I took this action because I want to make it perfectly clear: I was born in America and I am a proud American citizen. I am, and always have been, 100 percent committed to our United States Constitution and the United States of America. As the daughter of an Air Force veteran, stepdaughter of an Army veteran and sister of a Navy veteran, I am proud of my allegiance to the greatest nation the world has ever known.
While Bachmann says she automatically became a Swiss citizen when she married her husband Marcus in 1978, Politico’s Tim Mak reports that the marriage was only disclosed to Swiss authorities this year when the couple registered their children for dual citizenship.

He didn’t lay out any type of political action platform. I can’t speak for any gay but myself, but I was impressed by the way he presented his own evolution. He didn’t try to pretend that he started out all warm and fuzzy toward gay people and admitted that he realized it was because he really didn’t know very many to begin with. What I really admired was how he phrased both his former reticence and now his outspokenness as a product of his own Christian evolution.
What I find most intriguing about the whole thing is who is in the Imam corner of claiming this was no “profile in courage.” Agree or disagree with him, it took cajones to get up and say what he did the way he said it.
And know who kept running through my mind? JohnnyReb… it took cajones for him to admit that he had been wrong, too.

Clip showed this orca breaking thru the surface just as the screen was emblazoned with the words “FREE WILLY” Al the Brits about fell out of their chairs laughing. Tom — “Joe@4:25 – is wussiness really a word?? Ok, let’s go with passiveness instead!”
How about ‘passivity?’ Would that work for you?
I don’t think President Obama is as passive/wussy as some seem to think. I do think that he trusted the GOP too much early on, and I think he gave up a lot of ground for a couple of years. But I also think that he is quietly and slyly manipulative, and that he sometimes fools the GOP into giving him what he wants by tricking them without giving away hints that he’s even doing it. I think President Obama would be a hell of a poker player!
I used to be a traveling IT consultant years ago, and on one job, we went out for dinner with one of the client partners (these were the ‘fixers’ who found new business and stroked and petted the clients to keep them happy once we had gotten the job). She was complaining about how ’stupid’ one client’s management seemed to be, and the client was a large business in the South. The client partner was a New Yorker.
I explained to her that Southerners are *not* stupid, but that with people from outside the South, we would sometimes let them *think* that we were in order to get the outsiders to drop their guard — so that we could get an advantage. If the client’s people seem to be dumb hicks, I explained, they might have been trying to run that game on her.
She looked absolutely dumbfounded at that point. It never entered her mind that *she* might have been the one who was getting played. And so it is now with President Obama. If Congressional Republicans *think* he’s a wuss and easily bullied, then the President could take advantage of that and carefully *manipulate* them into a position where he’s got the upper hand.
“My favs still are the bully or a military person though.”
I’m always interested in the veteran candidate, though I carefully examine their political record to see how much of a friend they’ve been to veterans. I was frankly *appalled* by how unfriendly McCain had been to vets, and I was surprised to see how many times he had voted against programs to help us.
With respect to bullies, I have no time for them and I won’t vote for them.

Ending DADT and refusing to defend DOMA, both actions that you pooh-poohed as too late and of not much impact.
In the case of DADT, it had an immediate effect on the lives of real people, and it required him to buck a lot of folks in the military and in Congress. Compared to this most recent step, he had a lot more at risk.

You know a dumb person dies a thousand deaths not understanding the problems. You would think the nerves would demand some relief from the ignorance. We didn’t even know what gay people were in my childhood now they are going to rearrange the world. I wonder if there is a way of counting gay people, you know seeing if they are gaining on us. An indicator like the money supply, now that would scare some people wouldn’t it? I sure that would be difficult to estimate, I actually know a few friends that were married to gay people never had a clue, until one day the spouse came out of the closet and left with a lover. Like illegal immigrants you really never know how many there really are among us. I can think of two prominent Atlanta people that happen to. You think they all come out of the closet or maybe some just stay married. Someone reading this could have the problem and just doesn’t know it.

Unless of course, you use the Richard Mourdock definition of compromise, meaning insisting that the Democrats surrender and accept GOP hegemony.

Ms. Bachmann’s actions are only prudent, given the state of our country. Better have “Plan B” ready if you can. When your country abdicates its responsibilities to you, you have no responsibilities to it. I think the Pilgrims, etc. knew something about this.
