More proof that this is not Ronald Reagan’s GOP

628x471

“The Republican Party, both in this state and nationally, is a broad party. There is room in our tent for many views; indeed, the divergence of views is one of our strengths…

Within our tent, there will be many arguments and divisions over approach and method and even those we choose to implement our philosophy. Seldom, if ever, will we raise a cheer signifying unanimous approval of the decisions reached. But if our philosophy is to prevail, we must at least pledge unified support of the ultimate decision. Unity does not require unanimity of thought.”

– Gov. Ronald Reagan,
in a 1967 speech to California Republicans

——————————–

People Arnold Schwarzenegger

“In the current climate, the extreme right wing of the party is targeting anyone who doesn’t meet its strict criteria. Its new and narrow litmus test for party membership doesn’t allow compromise….

It’s time for the Republicans who are so bent on enforcing conformity to ask themselves a question: What would Ronald Reagan have done? He worked hard to maintain a welcoming, open and diverse Republican Party. …

We need to remind the Republicans who want to enforce ideological purity that if they succeed, they will undo Reagan’s work to create an inclusive party that could fit many different views.”

– Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger
in an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times

———————–

“And that’s why the RINOs like Lugar and Hatch have to go. The GOP cannot offer a credible alternative to the destructive hate and social division of the Democrats — the party, let us remember, of slavery, segregation, secularism and sedition — unless it cleans out its own Augean stables first, removes the collaborationists and rejects “bipartisanship” as an absolute good in itself, instead of an occasional, pragmatic means to an end.”

– Michael Walsh,
in an overwrought column in National Review

——————

John Danforth

John Danforth

“If Dick Lugar, having served five terms in the U.S. Senate and being the most respected person in the Senate and the leading authority on foreign policy, is seriously challenged by anybody in the Republican Party, we have gone so far overboard that we are beyond redemption.”

– John C. Danforth, three-term Republican senator from Missouri and former ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush.

——————-

“A new poll shows Treasurer Richard Mourdock building a commanding lead over Sen. Richard Lugar.

The Howey/DePauw Indiana Battleground Poll, conducted by two prominent Republican and Democratic pollsters, shows Mourdock with a 48 percent to 38 percent lead over Lugar.

Voters will decide the fate of Lugar, a six-term incumbent, in Tuesday’s primary election. And today Lugar pleaded with all those he has helped in his career, no matter what their political party, to step up and salvage his.

“Every person in Indiana who wants me to continue, every person wherever they might be at this point, I encourage them to come out,” he said. “Come out immediately, as fast as you can.”

The poll’s 10 percentage point deficit for him, Lugar said, is not surprising given the millions of dollars spent by groups that oppose him. Those include the anti-tax Club for Growth and the tea party group FreedomWorks. There has been no similar response from the groups he has helped over the years, he said. He cited farmers, veterans, minorities, students, Jews and others as he appealed for help.

Fun with animal figures…

The person credited with getting the donkey widely accepted as the Democratic party’s symbol, Thomas Nast, a famous political cartoonist, came to the United States with his parents in 1840 when he was six.

He first used the donkey in an 1870 Harper’s Weekly cartoon to represent the “Copperhead Press” kicking a dead lion, symbolizing Lincoln’s Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, who had recently died.

Nast intended the donkey to represent an anti-war faction with whom he disagreed , but the symbol caught the public’s fancy and the cartoonist continued using it to indicate some Democratic editors and newspapers.

And…

Adlai Stevenson provided one of the most clever descriptions of the Republican’s symbol when he said, “The elephant has a thick skin, a head full of ivory, and as everyone who has seen a circus parade knows, proceeds best by grasping the tail of its predecessor.

Lincoln did preserve the union by wiping his rear end with the Constitution.
Firstly Habeas Corpus was suspended, meaning that persons deemed unloyal to the Union could be arrested and jailed without showing due cause or charges (habeas Corpus). Secondly civil law was suspended in those areas of the South under Union Control and placed under martial law. Censorship was imposed on several newspapers and journalists, although in practice this proved to be difficult to enforce. Restrictions on commerce were enacted and enforced. These are just a few of the ways civil liberties were circumvented during the Civil War. The tyrant got his just his just desserts. Just like all tyrants do in the end.
Just remember secession is not always a bad thing. If the 13 colonies didn’t secede from the British Empire, we would probably be drinking Earl Grey tea and singing “God Save the Queen”.

As usual Jay, you live in a fantasy world.

That metaphor is one that I think strikes more to the core of the problem than what people realize. The fact is, the Democratic Party has almost a total lock on the lip service paid to the Black community. They talk a good game about what could/should/has to be done. However, their track record of producing results is not one to broadcast to the world in my opinion. On the opposite side of the spectrum, the GOP doesn’t even make any attempt to hold dialogue with the Black community other than to berate them about something and question their “loyalty” to the Democrats. It’s kinda hard to persuade someone to vote for you while you’re poking them in the eyes and kicking them in the nuts at the same time.

If the GOP actually paid attention, they would see that almost ANY tangible results that actually helps the Black community would do more to get votes than simply offering lip service.

Thulsa: Dems are improving race relations by listening to their concerns, like making birth control more available and part of health care plans, and fighting to allow food stamps and welfare to remain available so that those in a bad situation but looking to improve still CAN, by fighting to allow more paths to citizenship, by having a Congressional Black Caucus, by supporting and not trying to eliminate the Civil Rights Act, and so on.

Now, answer MY question. What have the Republicans done to improve race relations lately? And no, you don’t get to criticize my answer without ALSO answering my question. That won’t even merit a nice try.

Borocephus,

They tried that. Why should they waste their time anymore with a community that simply doesn’t care to listen? You remember when Bush 1 spoke at the graduation of Morehouse I think it was? The students did various things to show their blatant disdain of the man from turning their backs to closing their eyes feigning sleep to looking at the floor to showing a complete lack of interest in what the man was saying. He might as well have been talking to a brick wall.

And let’s face it. Its a far easier sell to promise people social programs and goodies, preach a culture of victimization, and tell people you will do things on their bahalf that they can’t do for themselves. Contrast that with telling them the alternative which is to preach hard work, accountability, pulling yourself up by the bootstraps, value education much more, stay out of trouble with the law, work your way up from the bottom, etc Try selling that to the hip hop culture and lemme know how it goes.

Why should they waste their time anymore with a community that simply doesn’t care to listen?

For the same reason that Democrats only pay lip service. The Black Community is still an American community. When you’re in office, you represent EVERYBODY in your area, not just those who voted you into office. If you wanna b*tch about Blacks voting Democratic 9 out of 10 times, then you face two choices. Either shut up about that sh*t or do something to change it.

Contrary to what you believe, it has nothing to do with social programs and sh*t like that. It’s also not about preaching about hard work and sh*t like that. All the Black community wants is to be treated as equal Americans and not something worse than dogsh*t on the bottom of your shoe. Until you and others realize that, you’ll never get it.

Jefferson was known as a liberal in his day and was the founder of Democratic Party, known then as the Republican Democratic Party. Again, one cannot think in terms of generalities. “Barack the Magic Negro”[2] is a song by American political satirist Paul Shanklin who wrote and recorded it for the Rush Limbaugh Show as satire after it was first applied to presidential candidate Obama by movie and culture critic, David Ehrenstein, in a Los Angeles Times op ed column of March 19, 2007. It was played numerous times in 2007 and 2008 by Rush Limbaugh and appeared on the 2008 album We Hate the USA. It is sung by Shanklin to the tune of “Puff, the Magic Dragon”. Shanklin impersonates black activist Al Sharpton, who regretfully sings that white people will vote for Barack Obama for President instead of Sharpton, because Obama is a magical Negro (a term previously popularized by Spike Lee[3]), not a real black man from the “hood”.

Ehrenstein’s father was a Polish Jew and his mother is half black.
That said, his column did apparently precede Rush’s use of the term.

And both (IMHO) are asses for using it.

They BOTH suck

You sure those were not drag queens?

Just messing with you……. Used to have a “friend” who worked at Tattle Tales in the 90s. Been at BackStreets several times to dance and party until the wee hours

They Both: Guess what – the satire came after, and as a result of, the column from the LA Times, not the other way around. Who did Google let down?

From Wikipedia:
“Barack the Magic Negro”[2] is a song by American political satirist Paul Shanklin who wrote and recorded it for the Rush Limbaugh Show as satire after it was first applied to presidential candidate Obama by movie and culture critic, David Ehrenstein, in a Los Angeles Times op ed column of March 19, 2007. It was played numerous times in 2007 and 2008 by Rush Limbaugh and appeared on the 2008 album We Hate the USA

I would say Harry was stupid. You have never read anything were I absolved him or any Democrat of racial comments and actions.

I have made sure to say that blame and credit should be applied to both parties………

Yeah. I was a regular at tattle tales in the 90s. A very underrated shoe club it was IMDO. Backstreet was a lot of fun even if I did get my butt occasionally pinched. I figured it was just the price you have to pay to chase friends from tattletales and other fine gentlemen’s establishments.

they BOTH suck,

Of course Harry was stupid. And I doubt you or any of the other liberals on here absolved him of his comments. I’m just making the point that there seems to be quite a double standard. Could you imagine if Limpballs woulda said that? Or a Republican Senate leader? People would be raising hell.

I had a buddy of mine who ran track at one of the larger “local” universities in the 80s……… He was with us one night at Back Streets and he was the one flying “solo”.

He got hit on by a BIG DUDE………………… BIG……………..

Steroid taking BIG. My buddy is good size and works out a lot, especially at that time. He got mad and just left. Took a taxi to his apartment in Buckhead

We kid and laugh at him to this day

There is some crazy stuff said all around and I think that each side overlooks their own and hammers the other.

To your point, Limbaugh would have been HAMMERED…….

Josef,

Yes. Harry is a Mormon. A fact that seems to escape some of the liberals who have been doing some Mormon bashing lately on these blogs. Ironic aint it?
