An irrefutable argument from climate-change deniers

UPDATE: Under harsh criticism, the Heartland Institute has now decided to end its billboard program.

The Heartland Institute describes itself as “a leading source of science and economics questioning claims that man-made global warming is a crisis.” And it’s true, as far as such things go: In the universe of climate-change deniers, Heartland is as close to mainstream as the movement gets.

This is how Heartland has chosen to participate in the debate regarding “science and economics.”

Billboard2-620x229

According to Heartland, this is planned as part of a series of such billboards. Additional stars will be Charles Manson and perhaps Osama bin Laden. And if you want to know why Heartland has chosen to feature such people on its billboards, it has thoughtfully provided an answer:

“Because what these murderers and madmen have said differs very little from what spokespersons for the United Nations, journalists for the “mainstream” media, and liberal politicians say about global warming….”

Most scientists and 60 percent of the general public (in the U.S.) do not believe man-made global warming is a problem. The people who still believe in man-made global warming are mostly on the radical fringe of society. This is why the most prominent advocates of global warming aren’t scientists. They are murderers, tyrants, and madmen.”

If I may paraphrase Heartland’s argument, sane people shouldn’t want anything to do with people who have gone off the deep end, are truly nutty, have lost all sense of proportion and decency and say and do preposterous things.

I think they have a point.

“One doesn’t have to be familiar with Heartland. Their reasoning and method of persuasion are cited in Jay’s writing. That’s the issue. Not global warming or climate change or anything else. Those are just the subject Heartland used to reveal its thought process and persuasion tactics.”

I am inclined to disagree. You saw Jay’s response to my question and I would bet he is, yet again, setting up a kind of straw man to advance or persuade others to a certain belief. I hate to be cynical, but unless he categorically denies this, that is what it looks like to me.

Unanimity within the scientific community is not a criteria for acceptance or rejection.

It’s similar to what we see here when someone says “black holes exist in space. Science cites x, y and z to arrive at that conclusion’

and someone responds with “not ALL scientists believe black holes are real.”

Absolutes are the bane of thoughtful discussion.

Sorry, LD, I must decline. Figure out where I stand from my posts. I am not saying that I think we haven’t contributed to the warming as a commonsense conclusion, but boy would it ever be stupid to possibly wreck our economy on a false premise. Do I think we should take measures to reduce C02 emissions? Of course. But I feel we need to do it an cost effective manner.

Obama needs to constantly remind voters that Romney hides his money in Swiss bank accounts to avoid paying U.S. taxes. What kind of person runs for president and has the gall to launder his profits in off-short bank accounts and other countries? He’s a great example of someone “who loves his country.” Willard, who has somewhat of a spoiled brat quality, really is in store for a big disappointment in November. Even so, the outliers in the lunatic fringe are becoming more and more isolated:

Less than a third of conservative Republicans say there is solid evidence for global warming, but 63% of moderate or liberal Republicans said they believe there is solid evidence for global warming, a 22% jump from 2009.

And worse, your socialist soon-to-be nominee is a traitor!

In June 2011, Mitt Romney said “I believe the world is getting warmer, and I believe that humans have contributed to that.”

“Though the theory has been widely accepted by educated people for over 150 years and is the very basis for many modern sciences, including biology.”

There have been many widely accepted beliefs throughout history that have later been proven to be false. So that means nothing to me (nor should it to anyone else). A belief must be assessed on the merit of evidence offered in support of it. Without appealing to authority, please outline in your own words the evidence which proves Darwin’s theory correct.

Now the discussion is moving from not denying the reality of man’s impact on the climate, to what to do about it.

Progress.

Dr. Beaulieu:

“There is no doubt the climate is changing; the only debate is over the cause. And that simply isn’t settled.”

Yep. Climatology as a scientific discipline is still in its infancy…something the climatologists will be the first to tell you. The problem is that neither “side” making memo-riddled partisanship political hay is listening…

TBG: Adam, if you don’t like people calling you out about “TEH RULZ”

Oh no, I quite enjoy it. By all means, keep going. It entertains me.

No problem.

As long as you continue to tell only those you disagree with what they can and can not say (post), I will continue to point out your “THE RULZ”.

Also, using your logic, will you admonish others when the use the phrase “Obama Derangement Syndrome” since the first us was “Bush Derangement Syndrome”?

Somehow I doubt it.
