An irrefutable argument from climate-change deniers

UPDATE: Under harsh criticism, the Heartland Institute has now decided to end its billboard program.

The Heartland Institute describes itself as “a leading source of science and economics questioning claims that man-made global warming is a crisis.” And it’s true, as far as such things go: In the universe of climate-change deniers, Heartland is as close to mainstream as the movement gets.

This is how Heartland has chosen to participate in the debate regarding “science and economics.”

Billboard2-620x229

According to Heartland, this is planned as part of a series of such billboards. Additional stars will be Charles Manson and perhaps Osama bin Laden. And if you want to know why Heartland has chosen to feature such people on its billboards, it has thoughtfully provided an answer:

“Because what these murderers and madmen have said differs very little from what spokespersons for the United Nations, journalists for the “mainstream” media, and liberal politicians say about global warming….”

Most scientists and 60 percent of the general public (in the U.S.) do not believe man-made global warming is a problem. The people who still believe in man-made global warming are mostly on the radical fringe of society. This is why the most prominent advocates of global warming aren’t scientists. They are murderers, tyrants, and madmen.”

If I may paraphrase Heartland’s argument, sane people shouldn’t want anything to do with people who have gone off the deep end, are truly nutty, have lost all sense of proportion and decency and say and do preposterous things.

I think they have a point.

Global warming IS a problem. You can’t deny the data. (I know weather shouldn’t be used but we got a 3 weeks winter and MAYBE 2 weeks of Spring it seems like). But hell the climate has been warming, cooling, etc. for billions of years…even before their were humans. So…….

BTW, love this Ron White joke:
“Why are you a vegetarian?’ I asked him. And it wasn’t even because meat is bad for you. He said that raising cattle was bad for the planet — with cow flatulence in the ozone and the clearing of land for the raising of cattle. ‘What are you doing to help the environment?’ ‘I’m eating the cow.’”

I really can’t blame the Heartland Institute for going this route. Facts and proper scientific methods are not acceptable to the mainstreem media. They only want hysteria and crisis. Reporting that the world won’t end in 20 years unless we all stop breathing, eating meat, and procreating just isn’t sexy enough. Nope, an overall mean temperature increase of 0.59 degrees celcius since the 1850’s and no increase of the mean temperature in the past 13 years isn’t news. Well, I think it’s important, but you’ll never see that reported in the AJC.

Byte Me, I didn’t state I agreed with them, just that I can’t blame the Heartland Institute for going this route. My point is that emotion trumps fact in media these days and it is sad that this method is used by anyone, whether they be alarmist or denier.

Jay, et al, Source for my information was “Golbal Warming Melts Away” by Randall Hoven. Sources he cited were: Combined Land-Surface Air and Sea-Surface Water Temperature Anomalies – NASA/GISS, Hadley Center of the UK Met Office, National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) via the University of Colorado, Polar Research Group/Department of Atmospheric Science at the University of Illinois. The article seems well researched and thought out.

At least those countries I listed have grinding poverty as the reason for their scientific illiteracy.

Given that the sole argument in favor of shackling our economy is the “endorsement” of people I never heard of, seems just as sound to oppose it on that basis.

Such “credentials” are the flaw of all leftist cult-based systems, where arguments are accepted, or rejected, based on who speaks. Conservatives could not care less whether the unibomber is for or against anything; leftists, of course, have to care as that is the entirety of their basis for the policy. As for me, global warming sounds like a beach-front buying opportunity in Northern Canada.

JamVet:

“Corporal, where are the articles about wobbles in the earth’s orbit, cow flatulence and El Pigbo’s proclamations that volcanoes are to blame?”

There are many scientists out there who have varied viewpoints.

My point is that “science” has been wrong before and thus a majority opinion has not always been correct.

Time will tell.
