The U.S. political scene just got a little less weird

Yesterday, Newt Gingrich “suspended” his campaign for president, in the same sense that back in 1776 the British “suspended” Nathan Hale for spying. The campaign is dead, and with it whatever remaining hopes Gingrich had to be president.

In his speech, Gingrich offered a very tepid endorsement of Mitt Romney, whose campaign had said more than a few unkind things about the former speaker. Romney himself had called Gingrich’s behavior “highly erratic,” pointing out that “it does not suggest a stable, thoughtful course, which is normally associated with leadership.” Gingrich has been less than complimentary to Romney as well; in fact, the Obama campaign has released an ad featuring Newt’s repeated skewering of his party’s nominee.

So on Wednesday, Newt promised to work to elect Republican candidates for the House, Senate, staet governors and state legislatures.

“As for the presidency, I’m asked sometimes, is Mitt Romney conservative?” he continued. “And my answer is simple. Compared to Barack Obama? You know, this is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan. This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical leftist president in American history.”

All of which is prelude to this, from Shep Smith at Fox News after watching Newt’s withdrawal speech:

You ain’t so bad your own self, Shep.

Incredibly off topic, but… am I the only one who gets a little queasy whenever hearing about this or that low-level / maybe-a-terrorist-group that’s entrapped set up by the Federales into planting some fake bomb somewhere, and who then face a zillion years in prison for it? No?

Then maybe some of you will take this bit of advice from my favorite blogspot-dot-commer to heart. To wit:

It’s an old lesson, but one that young protesters have gotta understand: Ask anyone who was around in the anti-’Nam protests, anyone who marched for civil rights – the infiltrators are always the most violent a##holes. Anyone who is cheering for the big action that could kill people ain’t one of you.

And the larger lesson is this: they are going to push and push until someone acts so that they can then point and say, “Look at how awful these Occupy people are.” Idiots will, of course, believe it.

When Newt started his run for the nomination, I was fairly sure he would not succeed. Unfortunately, at the rate the Republican electorate seems to be dumbing down, in about eight years don’t be surprised to see a Newt clone getting the nomination. For the Republicans, scary and weird are starting to become the norm.

Sheppard Smith is right on target. It is a wonder to me how attack ads against an opposing candidate can be so effective in this country. They are a bit like Bookman’s threads and the resultant comments from his sheep. But just wait. We are starting one of the most vicious and vile campaigns yet to happen in this country. Newt bashing is little league compared to what is in store. And all of it will be OK if we can just “get our boy elected”. Whatever we say about an opposing candidate, his wife, his children, how he spends his money, how much money he has and how he got it……. all are fair game. The putdowns, the belittling, the rancor, all sucked up by a media eager to sell TV time, mesothelioma ads. and blog space. It’s disgusting.

I loved how Shep Smith just was bewildered over this. It gives him a certain amount of cred, but let’s face it – if you watch Fox you aren’t just watching Shep Smith, and even if you ARE, you still are going to get a conservative slant on the news. CNN has a similar approach, only rarely siding with liberals on an issue, and only after rigorous fact checking (see “women don’t make less than men” argument by the right). Sometimes, even that doesn’t happen.

Here’s some humor for today.

You live to be 80 and know who you are, then along comes someone and blows
it totally out of the water!

An old Marine Pilot sat down at the Starbucks, still wearing his old USMC
flight suit and leather jacket, and ordered a cup of coffee. As he sat
sipping his coffee, a young woman sat down next to him. She turned to the
pilot and asked, “Are you a real pilot?”

He replied, ‘Well, I’ve spent my whole life flying planes; first Stearmans,
and then the early Grummans. I flew a Wildcat and Corsair in WWII, and
then in the Korean conflict, Banshees and Cougars. I’ve taught more than 260
people to fly and given rides to hundreds, so I guess I am a pilot. And
you, what are you?”

She said, “I’m a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about naked women.
As soon as I get up in the morning I think about naked women. When I shower
I think about naked women. When I watch TV I think about naked women. It
seems everything makes me think of naked women.”

The two then sat sipping their coffee in total silence.

A little while later, a young man sat down on the other side of the old
pilot and asked, “Are you a real pilot?”

He replied, “I always thought I was, but I just found out I’m a lesbian.”

And btw, the whole “divisive President” argument is nothing more than a deliberate distraction, attempting to blame Obama for the bloc opposition to Obama AS OFFICIAL POLICY (which is what is ACTUALLY divisive, btw). To make the “you’re divisive” argument is to make whatever problems being discussed seem insignificant or to pretend those problems don’t actually exist. The GOP has learned that if you don’t admit the problem, ON PURPOSE, then you can avoid dealing with it entirely. For example, here are some lies the GOP and supporters tell:

“There’s no war on women”
“Women don’t make less than men”
“Smoking is actually good for your health”
“Occupy is all about violence”
“Violence only comes from the left”
“They’re going to take away your guns”
“There is no reason for a graduating student to have over 80k in student loan debt”

And to cover up these lies they start with saying something extremely divisive “Our goal should be to make Obama a one term President” and then every time they are challenged on their actual positions, or their ridiculous opposition, it’s “OMG STOP BEING SO DIVISIVE!”

The jig is up, guys. Either start getting reasonable, or see your party slowly dwindle to nothing.

Jobs report not so good. It’s that pesky jobs number…… it just won’t go away, will it? GM and their affiliate finance branch still owe the American taxpayer close to 50B in unpaid debt. And a 28 hour flight to Afghanistan to give an 11 minute speech with his Seal Six suit on is just not going to cut it with any intelligent American. “The war on terror is over”. That’s about as bad as Mission Accomplished, without the flight suit. Broadband to rural areas was begun with Clinton and was improved with Bush and finally passed with Bozo. We’ll see how Dod-Frank works out. If it costs the taxpayer anywhere near what Bozocare is going to cost, it will be a flaming success, now won’t it?

Speaking to a reporter on a local news station in Boston, Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts cited her ancestor’s “high cheekbones” (quoting an aunt) as evidence of her Native American heritage.

Earlier today, the Harvard law professor explained that she listed herself as “Native American” on school directories in the past so she could meet others “who are like I am.” Genealogists have been unable to verify that Warren is descended from Native Americans, despite her claims.

According to the Cherokee Nation requirements, she would have to establish a direct bloodline, and the relatives would have to be listed on one of the government rolls from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s that established membership in the different tribal nations. If she’s able to meet all the requirements, she could petition for membership. If she only wants to claim that she’s a descendent of Cherokees, all she needs to do is establish someone in her lineage was a Cherokee.

mm your party voted for the most similar Republican candidate to Obama to run against Obama. The highest compliment you could have paid and we appreciate your honesty. This country actually could live with a Mitt Romney as president, unlike the others you lined up in your usual suspects to run for office.

Did anybody see the PBS special touching on Palin in the campaign in ‘08. They felt they had not vetted her well enough and didn’t realize what a nut they had on their hands until the decision had been made. This seems to be the characteristics of Republicans now days. Then if elected they run the country like a loose cannon too, unneeded wars break out, foreign relations are put on hold as we unilaterally go after weapons of mass destruction, bodies float in New Orleans streets after we have spent billions on Homeland and tell the public we can handle domestic disasters. And in the end they bailed out the banks they so poorly regulated, leaving loopholes for further poor behavior down the road, knowing their sloppy choice for presidential ticket would hand the problem over to the Democrats. Could you imagine another four years of this? We would be in a 10 year depression. I bet Bush wanted out of that White House door as bad as we wanted him out.

TBS — “Rubio could very well help deliver FL which is very important. However this notion that he will bring non Cuban Hispanics in mass to Romney is another story”

Here’s the ‘why’ of that, for our conservative friends.

Cubans are treated COMPLETELY different from all other Hispanics for immigration purposes. If a Cuban gets his feet onto American soil, he’s allowed to stay, regardless of whether he followed legal procedure to get here or not. Any other Hispanic — Mexican, Guatemalan, Peruvian, Uruguayan — if they get into the country without documentation, they can be deported.

So how do you think that makes MOST Hispanics feel about Cubans?

Resentful, that’s how.

So let me say this again. Cubans get to STAY, EVEN IF THEY SNEAK IN. No other Hispanic group is allowed to do that. And why aren’t conservatives pooping their pants about that? Don’t most of y’all get angry about people sneaking in and getting away with it? Yet you’re prepared to throw in with a possible Romney-Rubio ticket?

Do you think that kind of disparate treatment is going to attract Hispanic voters to Romney, if he should happen to pick Rubio as his running mate? I don’t. In fact, I think it will guarantee at least an 80% break to Obama from Hispanic voters.

Finally, how do I know this? My wife’s Mexican-American. And I didn’t understand it until she explained it to me — like I just explained it to you.

Rubio may be a very competent and suitable man to fill the VP slot. I have nothing personal against him, other than the fact that he’s a Republican and thus someone I’m not likely to vote for anyway. That said, putting him on the ticket might help Romney win Florida, but it’s going to hurt him SIGNIFICANTLY in other states where there are strong Hispanic voting populations. A strong Hispanic shift to Obama might tilt some of those states into the Democratic column, and when you look at the electoral math, Romney can’t afford to lose ANY state that’s leaning his way.

Romney will have to calculate if the electoral votes he could win in FL would be worth the electoral votes he’s lose in the rest of the country. That’s what it comes down to with Rubio.

Then came the interview, and they weren’t interested any more.

Why? The guy was very conservative Jewish, and the management freaked when they got a look at him. They made up reasons why they didn’t like him, but it was obvious to the missus that they didn’t cotton to having one a’ them thar HE-brews a-working in their nice christian office building.

Research suggests that conservatives are, on average, more susceptible to fear than those who identify themselves as liberals. Looking at MRIs of a large sample of young adults last year, researchers at University College London discovered that “greater conservatism was associated with increased volume of the right amygdala”. The amygdala is an ancient brain structure that’s activated during states of fear and anxiety.

They also make excellent breakfast pastries, and among the sweet ones is a real hidden gem — a croissant with Black Forest ham and Gruyere cheese. Ausgezeichnet!

Dry-cured Italian sausages and crumbly, sharp Italian cheeses are most welcome for this purpose.

Speaking of funny lines, I know all of you are familiar with the lies Elizabeth Warren was caught in claiming she was an Indian minority. Typical liberal trying to be what she isn’t. Kinda like Hillary claiming Jewish blood when she ran for senate. When Elizabeth Warren’s lie was first exposed she said she had never claimed minority status as an Indian. When hard copy proof was offered up provng she had in fact done so on a number of occassions including when she applied for employment at Harvard, Her staff then claimed to do some quick research finding a great, great great somebody or other of hers was Indian without any tangible she proof. Now her false claims have Iindian groups up set with her. Now the funny part, a comedian last night said Elizabeth Warren’s Indian name was “Spreading Bull.” How appropriate, a Harvard professor, caught in another lie, now named Spreading Bull. Fits doesn’t it? Massachusetts Democrats are acustomed to dishonest Democrats so the lies probably won’t hurt her election chances although at present she trails in all polls.

Think ‘picnic at the dinner table.’ In fact, we’ve enjoyed that lunch on the deck many times.

My favorite Napa Valley winery has a small deli, and they ENCOURAGE you to picnic on their grounds, even if you don’t buy their food. It’s a fine way to pass an hour or two, just lounging on the grass, nibbling some tasties and enjoying their wine. This vineyard is much less snooty and much more egalitarian than some of the other outfits in the area.

I am hopeful that Romney will be better. He can’t be worse. We have hit bottom and we have scrapped the bottom of the barrel. Of course, a little nitrate fertilizer and some diesel fuel would be handy to take along just in case.

Why don’t you go shopping, yakker.

“After controlling for all those factors, Medicare Advantage plans are more expensive than is traditional Medicare.”

Duh! Tell us something we don’t already know genius.

And while you’re at it go ahead and have the Dems propose to abolish it. That should go over real well with seniors. Its more costly because by law the benefits have to meet or exceed original medicare and in most plans benefits are better than original medicare.

Well Thulsa, way to change the subject. But since you asked:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/clintons/bodycount.asp

I am only allowed two links per post. Let me know if you’re Google is still too broken to look up more on your own. The second one shows a composite and compact representation of the overall attitude from the right against Clinton at the time.

First of all, a columnist that has defended repeatedly Cynthia McKinney is a poor judge of what is “weird”. OH, and by the way…just like the inability of Libtards to present a specific “fair share” that productive people are supposed to pay in taxes (to support the greed of slackers on the dole)—you guys just LOVE to call Fox News a bunch of liars….yet seemingly when asked for examples of such “lies”, one hears crickets chirping. I fact check all the majors, and Fox News far and away scores highest marks for accuracy. Try it sometime Lefties…you’ll be shocked and angry (at least if you’re honest about it, but as the Left needs protection from honesty, I’m not banking that it’s remotely in your DNA).

Hmm. Well, let’s see examples in which I have “defended repeatedly Cynthia McKinney,” shall we?

Or is it … crickets?

As Joe Bob Briggs said “We are the Weird”. Normal people don’t blog. They have lives. A Gentleman always defends a lady. And that gentle lady Ms. Honorable Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney has made some really interesting use of floral arrangements on hats. And she has a street named after her. In order to have a street named after me I’d have to change my name to Dead End. And she’s much better at Slow Jaming and Hip Hop than Our Beloved Messiah. Let’s hear it for weirdness.

3.4% GDP growth. Job growth far below expectations. Fewer Americans have jobs than when Obama became president. The month of April was the bloodiest for Americans in the Afghan War in which most of the casualties have been on Obama’s watch. A chinese dissident left out in the cold by a cynical white house, desperate to keep it’s money line to Bejing open. The looming specter of Obamacare will be a jobs killer in 2013…There is so much that is important to talk about. .

No wonder Jay only wants to talk about Newt.

Incorrect. Whenever I have seen people suggest that Fox News DOESN’T lie, or that there is no evidence they are lying, I present evidence. Each and every time I see the (implied) counter-claim. And each and every time, you guys pretend that I never did such a thing and go on believing that there is “no evidence Fox News lies” just the same as “Obama can’t run on his record because he doesn’t have one.” You are delusionally wrong on both counts, and sometimes I wonder if it’s deliberate.
