The U.S. political scene just got a little less weird

Yesterday, Newt Gingrich “suspended” his campaign for president, in the same sense that back in 1776 the British “suspended” Nathan Hale for spying. The campaign is dead, and with it whatever remaining hopes Gingrich had to be president.

In his speech, Gingrich offered a very tepid endorsement of Mitt Romney, whose campaign had said more than a few unkind things about the former speaker. Romney himself had called Gingrich’s behavior “highly erratic,” pointing out that “it does not suggest a stable, thoughtful course, which is normally associated with leadership.” Gingrich has been less than complimentary to Romney as well; in fact, the Obama campaign has released an ad featuring Newt’s repeated skewering of his party’s nominee.

So on Wednesday, Newt promised to work to elect Republican candidates for the House, Senate, staet governors and state legislatures.

“As for the presidency, I’m asked sometimes, is Mitt Romney conservative?” he continued. “And my answer is simple. Compared to Barack Obama? You know, this is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan. This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical leftist president in American history.”

All of which is prelude to this, from Shep Smith at Fox News after watching Newt’s withdrawal speech:

You ain’t so bad your own self, Shep.

TBS — “Rubio could very well help deliver FL which is very important. However this notion that he will bring non Cuban Hispanics in mass to Romney is another story”

Here’s the ‘why’ of that, for our conservative friends.

Cubans are treated COMPLETELY different from all other Hispanics for immigration purposes. If a Cuban gets his feet onto American soil, he’s allowed to stay, regardless of whether he followed legal procedure to get here or not. Any other Hispanic — Mexican, Guatemalan, Peruvian, Uruguayan — if they get into the country without documentation, they can be deported.

So how do you think that makes MOST Hispanics feel about Cubans?

Resentful, that’s how.

So let me say this again. Cubans get to STAY, EVEN IF THEY SNEAK IN. No other Hispanic group is allowed to do that. And why aren’t conservatives pooping their pants about that? Don’t most of y’all get angry about people sneaking in and getting away with it? Yet you’re prepared to throw in with a possible Romney-Rubio ticket?

Do you think that kind of disparate treatment is going to attract Hispanic voters to Romney, if he should happen to pick Rubio as his running mate? I don’t. In fact, I think it will guarantee at least an 80% break to Obama from Hispanic voters.

Finally, how do I know this? My wife’s Mexican-American. And I didn’t understand it until she explained it to me — like I just explained it to you.

Rubio may be a very competent and suitable man to fill the VP slot. I have nothing personal against him, other than the fact that he’s a Republican and thus someone I’m not likely to vote for anyway. That said, putting him on the ticket might help Romney win Florida, but it’s going to hurt him SIGNIFICANTLY in other states where there are strong Hispanic voting populations. A strong Hispanic shift to Obama might tilt some of those states into the Democratic column, and when you look at the electoral math, Romney can’t afford to lose ANY state that’s leaning his way.

Romney will have to calculate if the electoral votes he could win in FL would be worth the electoral votes he’s lose in the rest of the country. That’s what it comes down to with Rubio.

No argument there, and I respect your position on that.

The missus and I know from personal experience that CFA engages in discriminatory hiring practices as well. Some years ago, she was trying to fill an IT position over there, and she managed to find someone who fit the ‘purple elephant’ requirement they had. They were blown away on paper; they were ready to hire the guy just on the strength of his resume.

Then came the interview, and they weren’t interested any more.

Why? The guy was very conservative Jewish, and the management freaked when they got a look at him. They made up reasons why they didn’t like him, but it was obvious to the missus that they didn’t cotton to having one a’ them thar HE-brews a-working in their nice christian office building.

http://www.salon.com/2012/05/03/republican_fear_factor_salpart/

Research suggests that conservatives are, on average, more susceptible to fear than those who identify themselves as liberals. Looking at MRIs of a large sample of young adults last year, researchers at University College London discovered that “greater conservatism was associated with increased volume of the right amygdala”. The amygdala is an ancient brain structure that’s activated during states of fear and anxiety.

jcb — “Then why does the GOP use Chris Christie as their party symbol?”

What was that dig at Christie earlier in the week? Some wag telling Christie that NJ was The Garden State, not The Olive Garden State?

(ir)Rational — “Bro – It isn’t, but you gotta check out Patak’s in Austell if you want to get some good (although garlicky) brats around here.”

And getcher baked goods at Bernhard’s on Atlanta Road, between Smyrna and Marietta. European-style loaves and pastries, and seasonal baked goods. They make fresh pflaumenkuchen in August, for example, and you can get a Black Forest cake to order.

They also make excellent breakfast pastries, and among the sweet ones is a real hidden gem — a croissant with Black Forest ham and Gruyere cheese. Ausgezeichnet!

“No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar.” ~ Abraham Lincoln
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Is that really a true quote lol? I’ve been using a version of that all my life and thought it was “original.

I always say, “I’m too stupid to lie. If I do I’ll forget what lie I told to whom and get in all sorts of trouble. Better I just tell the truth.”

Abe’s is shorter and easier to teach my daughter ……..

I’ve been told by Kamchak that the Dekalb Farmers Market carries Patak’s sausages as well………..

That is a valid quote from Lincoln. Personally, I doubt that he was all that honest, but that’s his reputation anyway.

I’ve seen them at Whole Foods in Marietta as well, but never at a Publix or Kroger or any place like that.

Normal — Your sister works at Bernhard’s?

There are nice people there. :)

But the Swiss butcher next door is a real prong; we don’t even go in his shop any more.

Joe Hussein Mama: If you are ever over the other way, the E48th Street Market is awesome as well. They make their own mozzarella and their muffalato is superb.

st simons- a whole network that jumped the shark 15 yrs ago.

You mean CNN. Not even sure how they’re still on the air. I think women’s soccer puts up higher ratings than they do.
