Laughably, GOP wants to blame divisiveness on Obama

From The Hill:

“Republicans are seeking to portray President Obama as the divider-in-chief, arguing the presidential candidate who trumpeted hope and change four years ago is now running an increasingly negative campaign.

Their chief argument is that Obama’s attacks on the wealthy are meant to incite class warfare and a heightened us-versus-them mentality never seen before in present-day politics.

But Republicans also point to Democrats’ “war on women” and the contraception mandate in Obama’s healthcare law, which they argue is an attack on religious freedom.

Even the lead-up to the anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden over the last week was used by a sharp-elbowed Obama to divide the nation, Republicans say.”

Politically speaking, it’s a smart if cynical strategy. Millions of Americans are indeed worried about how divisive our debate and rhetoric have become, and how difficult it has become to reach compromise. They understand at a gut level that it’s an unhealthy state of affairs, and that if allowed to fester it could threaten the nation’s long-term security, prosperity and unity.

Among Republicans, the fact that the divisiveness is almost entirely their own creation doesn’t faze them in the least. Like a spouse abuser who blames his violence on his victim, the Republican Party hopes to blame the whole mess all on Obama.

The truth is, Obama infuriates the Republicans simply by waking up as president each morning. Under the rubric of “taking our country back,” they have challenged his status as an American, they have impugned his faith and they have even questioned his loyalty and patriotism. From the very beginning, they have pursued a conscious strategy of refusing to compromise in any way whatsoever, to the point that they have purged any in their own camp who dare to even suggest such a course. (See Lugar, Richard)

There is no better illustration of that dynamic than what happened with the health-care debate.

When he came into office, Obama abandoned the more liberal public-option approach to health insurance that he had campaigned upon in the ‘08 race. Instead, he embraced an approach that had been pioneered by a Republican governor in Massachusetts, that had been championed for almost a decade by a former Republican speaker of the House from Georgia and that had been created by the most important conservative think tank in Washington.

But what was his reward for seeking common ground? Instead of winning bipartisan support through his embrace of the health-care mandate, Obama found himself condemned as a socialist who was out to undermine the foundation of American society. And that pattern has held throughout the course of his presidency.

Even then, it took Obama a while to come to the realization that no matter what he did, there would be no compromise. The only thing that his opponents wanted from him was his surrender and then his disappearance. That was their price for “unity,” and now they want to blame him for refusing to pay it.

The only war on women I know of is Sharia Law. This law is a implemented by the lefts favorite religion more commonly known as Muslim except by the Obama Administration which prefers that the Muslim religion be referred to as the “Overseas Contingency Religion” or in the case of Fort Hood the “Workplace Incident” religion. With each new incidence of Muslim terrorism the looney left ewill have some term to hide the true nature of the attack. Even though the Fort Hood shooter yelled Alla hu Akbar while murdering our soldiers, The administration has failed to label the killings “hate crimes.” Strange.

Towncrier — “Okay…enough of this nonsense. I am going to start pegging you to the wall using YOUR playbook. Please show where I discounted the politicization of 9/11 and how I did so.”

Here you go:

“In case you didn’t know it, there are no perfect political candidates and voting for one over another almost always is a choice of the lesser of two evils and you vote for the one that more closely (as best you can tell) reflects your beliefs. And, also in case you didn’t know it, criticizing a candidate for his words or actions does not mean you will never vote for him.”

“When you can provide evidence from the very blog for the assertions you make, let’s talk.”

Okay, start talking.

“Once again, I’ve already *been* trying to validate the supposed ‘evidence’ you posted. And it’s not panning out, Champ. Guess you’ll have to go find some more.”

“Really? So what have you invalidated thus far?”

Several claimed pieces of “evidence” in the form of news stories in your link are not, as I’ve already told you, available in any way other than via a physical search of the archives of the newspapers in question. And I’m not obliged to do that. If you or the author of your refuting essay would care to *rely* on such data, then it’s incumbent on the citer to provide it. Footnotes are often satisfactory, from an academic point of view, yet the writer failed to provide any.

Incidentally, the writer took Lembcke to task for not finding those ‘easily found’ pieces of evidence he cites. On closer examination, those allegedly ‘easily found’ pieces of evidence aren’t anywhere nearly as easy to find as the writer’s claiming they are.

Now, as I’ve told you before, I’m open to persuasion on the point, but I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that you’ve either got an axe to grind on the topic or else you just agree with the writer and didn’t bother to look at his essay with a critical eye. Either way, I’m rapidly losing confidence that your ‘evidence’ is anything of the sort, especially given how demanding you’re being about others checking your work for you.

“Or is this more of the “I’m going to believe (over and against what commonsense says about human behavior) what a liberal sociologist wrote in the single book I have on the topic until you can show me proof on the Internet to the contrary AND personal testimony is invalid to me unless it agrees with my preconceived notions” game you like to play?”

Sonny, I didn’t *cite* Lembcke. YOU brought him up first in the original discussion. (laughing) :D

“You know, there are only two liberal posters I find insufferable here. You are one and the other knows who he is. Go pander your sophistry and childishness to some other gullible poster.”

I don’t post here to satisfy you. I post at the sufferance of our host. If you don’t care for what I have to say or if you find it upsetting, then either scroll past it or just don’t respond. But I’m not going to “shut up” or go elsewhere simply because you say so.

“Except that there was absolutely no reason for the data to be cut off where it was — unless you wanted to hide the fact that the tax cuts FAILED to continue their alleged effects past that very short time horizon. The tax cuts were STILL in effect — so why cut off the analysis?”

I’ll make it so simple even you can understand it. Because Joe economics is dynamic and what happens in years later on down the line when other and different macro factors come into play doesn’t give us as concise of an ability to determine correlation or possibly cause and effect as much as a shorter term analysis. The fact remains that immediately after the tax cuts were fully realized economic growth improved and fairly substantially at that. Doesn’t mean economic growth is going to last forever as I’m sure you’ve heard of the business cycle and of other macro external factors- the housing meltdown would be one.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever stood before a thesis or dissertation committee in grad school, Doom,”

Actually I have had to defend papers and thesises to economics professors but that kind of deflection on your side has no relevance to the point at hand now does it? Stick to the issue at hand champ.

“That’s clearly why Heritage cut their numbers off at that point — because the data *no longer showed what they were trying to claim it did.*”

No. it didn’t. ANd that would be because external factors such as the looming housing meltdown were coming into play. It doesn’t change the straightforward fact that economic growth short term grew immediately after the cuts were realized- a fact you still hate to acknowledge. ANd if you don’t like the place that the data set ends then I guess that’s just tough for you.

“Funny how the numbers stopped showing what Heritage was crowing about the *very next month* after they cut off their analysis, Doom. You don’t find that at all fishy?”

Nothing funny about it. Other external factors were coming into play. For example if I remember correctly I believe that employment started to dip the month the Dems took over Congress. I’m certain your crack research team can verify that with the BLS stats. Funny how that happens huh Joe?

“I’m sure that they recognized that analysts would jump on any dip at the end of their dataset — which, I strongly suspect is why they cut off their numbers where they did.”

Do you have any idea just how foolish that sounds Joe Mama? Does your mind actually believe that they or anybody else doesn’t know and acknowledge that an enormous recession hit in 07? Does your mind honestly think that they can hide the fact that this thing called the recession hit in 2007? That’s just plain silly dude. They ended their data set precisely because it shows economic growth up to when the recession hit. There’s nothing fishy and nothing to hide champ. Everyone knows the recession came next. Geez.

“Interesting. So give me a few of these apparently multiple multiple examples in which he has played the race card. I mean, other than the many mornings in which he had the audacity to wake up black. Other than those times….”

I’m your huckleberry. Here you go:

1) In a campaign speech in 2008 in which he said: “So what they’re going to try to do is make you scared of me. You know, he’s not patriotic enough. He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all those other presidents on those dollar bills, you know. He’s risky.”

2) In another 2008 campaign speech in which he said the following: “He’s got a funny name. You know, he doesn’t look like all those other Presidents on those dollar bills, you know. He’s risky. That’s essentially the argument they’re making.”

3) When he interjected his opinions into the arrest of Professor Henry Louis Gates before knowing all of the facts, going so far as to say the police acted “stupidly” (and without equal fervor not similarly interjecting himself into any other cases involving, say, whites or asians)

4) When he interjected himself into the Trayvon Martin case without knowing all of the facts, saying that if he had had a son, he would’ve looked like Trayvon (which, because of his white DNA, might not be true at all)

5) His recent “African Americans for Obama” campaign launch (I’m still waiting for the “European Americans for Romney launch – what…I shouldn’t expect it???)

Okay, your turn. Let me hear you justify, minimize or otherwise ignore these five examples. And, by the way and for the 100th time, Obama is HALF WHITE. So, will you please dispense with your “because he’s black” mantra (such as your used in your ill-advised headline about Trayvon Martin).

I had to fill up the family truckster about a week ago. Went to QT this time (took advantage of the Publix $50 gas card for $40. Sweet!). While I was quenching its thirst for the 87 octane fuel of the past, I got a pang of hunger.

So I strolled into the establishment looking for a corn dog or something to tide me over. A friendly guy at the counter said hi. I think they do that at all the QTs.

His name was Steve. His name badge said he’d been there since 2010. I found a yummy looking hot dog then went up to pay. It was slow in there at the time so I struck up a conversation with him.

“Anybody come in here asking for the algae pump,” I asked.

“A few weeks ago a couple did,” he chuckled, “I’d tell them it was pump number zero, like the ‘0′ in Obama.”

Pretty funny!

I asked him what he did before QT, he said he was a landscape architect. Said ever since Obama, people don’t want to spend on stuff like that.

I kinda remember that about the guy or bar with the t-shirts. Now I don’t know if its the same guy but there was a guy in the news that likened O to curious George. This guy didn’t even think or realize that it would be racist. He saw a pic of curious George somewhere and thought he looked like O. At the risk of sounding racist i kinda laughed about it when I saw i the pic of curious george and I thought about it for a second and I thought “dang He does look like curious george”. And i don’t think that’s racist. I heard someone say Nick Saban looks like a weasel. I thought about it and said “yeah He kinda does look like a weasel”. And when I was a kid there was another kid with cross eyes that looked kinda like a monkey. Someone called him a cross eyed monkey one day. And I thought “yeah, he sure does look like a cross eyeed monkey”. The kid was white.

That is why I was asking…… Wasn’t saying we shouldn’t have better or do not need 22s and 35s. However a comparison of the current MIGs vs 18s, 22s, & 35s in terms of technology and operational strategy as well as cost to the tax payer is a valid concern imo…….

Cost can’t be the only factor, but it has to be a determination to some degree……

The Osprey was a boondoggle for sure……….. A number of Dems and Repubs fought and fought to keep that going………

And we gained what in terms of military viability from that “thing”? it sure cost a lot of money

that is just an example………

Of course there are numerous positive examples that assist in keeping us pretty damn safe as opposed to many places in this world

Are those the ones obama already passed for next year?

They both suck,

People can be that naive. When I was 33 years old I worked at worldcom. We were all standing around talking about where we were from and someone asked me. And I said I was from monkeytown which Montgomery, AL. has been called a few times because of the number of blacks which of course is racist. But at that time in my life I had zero clue about that. I had heard the term once or twice before and heard it the week before when I was telling someone at a bar or somewhere where I was from and he said that. Anyway everyone just gave me a blank look and my white assistant gave me a look like “shut up”. I just looked at everyone and said “What? That ’s what they call it. I dunno why” cause they were all looking at me funny. It was pretty obvious to my black co-workers that I had no clue what the hell the term meant- especially since one of them was and is my best friend in ATL.

I don’t find Obama the Divider to be laughable in the least. The progressives have been busy dividing this nation from the moment Obama took over. Obama has taken every opportunity to divide by race, by class, by income, by gender. It’s how he thinks and how he acts. What is laughable is Jay’s defense of the indefensible. While Jayhas already lost crediblity outside of anyone in America who doesn’t think Ed Schultz is wise or Rachel Madow is hot, this column is a new low.

josef,

In that case of the guy selling t-shirts probably not. Reason being at least one person would have clued the guy in and told him that it was a racist term or denoted calling black people monkeys. He knew what he was doing. But I am saying there are people who can go through life and somehow just never hear the term and never get clued in. I met a 55 year old white woman from Carrollton who had no idea what the hell MLK blvd and all that was for. The woman had no clue who MLK was even after you splained it to her.

And then the Russian general who threatens a preemptive attack on our defensive missiles. Yes in a addition to a failed economic policy we have an administration with a failed foreign policy. Okay, everybody, let’s get down to the raw facts and a conclusion to the matter”

I said in one of my posts in that a lot of people see Obama highlighting the death of Bin Laden on the anniversary of that event in an election year as “crassly opportunistic” (word borrowed from Jay himself, though not applied to Obama). To which JHM responded in the following manner:

“Considering how hard the Republican candidates were flogging 9/11 in 2008, one wonders if you voted Republican and how you managed to square that vote with your statement above.”

Now, to anyone with reasonably good interpretive skills, JHM is aking me to square my criticism of Obama with my vote for McCain when the Republicans were doing the same thing (as if I was going to refrain from voting in light of any failings of the candidate I felt more represented my positions and even though I once said I voted for McCain holding my nose). To which I responded like this:

“In case you didn’t know it, there are no perfect political candidates and voting for one over another almost always is a choice of the lesser of two evils and you vote for the one that more closely (as best you can tell) reflects your beliefs. And, also in case you didn’t know it, criticizing a candidate for his words or actions does not mean you will never vote for him.”

This JHM, in his warped reasoning and coneception of things, interpreted as a discounting of the politicization of 9/11 – when, in fact, I was merely saying that when faced with a choice between voting for a candidate or not (the options given me by JHM), I am going to do the former whatever his faults. Implicit in my response was an acknowldegment of the fact that the Republicans have done wrong.

Now, JHM, if you can’t correctly assess what is said on this blog (where all the *evidence* you so purport to love is squarely before us) and reason correctly from it, why bother having any discussion with you about matters where the *evidence* is not squarely before us? You are intellectually dishonest or just stubburnly argumentative, in my view.

“If you don’t care for what I have to say or if you find it upsetting, then either scroll past it or just don’t respond.”

Exactly. Engaging you has turned out to be a waste of my time. Too bad though, because we could probably have some great exchanges if it wasn’t always a p***ing match to you (go back and look at your responses to me in the past month and see that on at least a few occasions this is how you – not me – have characterized our back and forth in so many words)
