Politico has posted its lists of the 15 best jokes told by Barack Obama at the White House Correspondents Dinner, and the 18 best jokes told by host Jimmy Kimmel.
Personally, I think Obama had the better writers, but you can judge for yourself. Here’s my choice for the best five by each of them, in no particular order:
First, Obama:
– “Now, some have said I blame too many problems on my predecessor, but let’s not forget that’s a practice that was initiated by George W. Bush.”
– “Jimmy got his start years ago on ‘The Man Show.’ In Washington, that’s what we call a congressional hearing on contraception.”
– “Recently, [Romney's] campaign criticized me for slow-jamming the news with Jimmy Fallon. In fact, I understand Governor Romney was so incensed he asked his staff if he could get some equal time on ‘The Merv Griffin Show.’”
– “Look at this party. We’ve got men in tuxes, women in gowns, fine wine, first-class entertainment. I was just relieved to learn this was not a GSA conference.”
And one not on the Politico list:
– “What’s the difference between a pitbull and a hockey mom? The pitbull is delicious.”
And from Kimmel:
– “If you told me when I was a kid I would be standing on a dais with President Barack Obama, I would have said, ‘The president’s name is Barack Obama?’”
– To Obama: “Remember when the country rallied around you in hopes of a better tomorrow? That was hilarious.”
– To New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie: “I think you’re misunderstanding New Jersey’s slogan. It’s not the Olive Garden state.”
– “It’s great to see the Gingriches here, because that means the check cleared.”
– “Democrats would like you to stick to your guns. And if you don’t have any guns, you can ask Eric Holder to get some for you.”
– Jay Bookman

I know it’ll ruin your day, but gas prices are stable for now. I don’t know why wingnuts openly wish for higher gas prices just to help defeat Obama, firstly neither Mittens nor tha Newtser can make the lower, no matter how hard they try, unless you wish for gubbimint intervention in a free market, and once they rise, they never quite seem to fall back to where they were… do they?
Be careful what you wish for winguts… it’s called cutting your nose(s) off to spite your face…

It might help if you knew (as surely everyone in the room was aware) that Obama had been accused of implying that Sarah Palin was a pig, back in Sept. 2008.

mm-”You cons are still falling for the same lies the GOP has been feeding you for 30 years. How’s that trickle down working for ya?”
Trickle down has worked fine, as it has for two hundred and fifty years. It has built the rrichest country in the history of the world where even the poor in this country are wealthier than the rich in other countries. Use Obama as an example. Had he grown up in Kenya instead of being a millionaire he would be living in a grass shack. He is rich. Made his wealth under trickle down capitalism. He has never made a penny resulting from the economic system he is trying to impose on the rest of us. Want to bet whether he would give up any of his wealth to live under the socialism communism he wants us to live under? When he talks about “fairness” he isn’t talking about his money. He is talking about yours. He has made his under this evil system.

Liberals think the purpose of a business is to provide employment. That silly thought is why governement programs cannot end a recession and never provide permanent jobs. Government programs are always designed to create jobs which is a noble purpose. The problem, is for a businessto create jobs first requires a profitable business. A profitable business requires customers. That is why business, which liberals confuse with the term corporations, first job is to create customers. No business starts the day saying our mission is to hire more people.

Mighty Righty @9:14 am- Wrong – He did not grow up under the current system we live in now. He is a product of the 60’s and the 70’s when tax rates were more fair, Social Security wasn’t being raided by Congress for purposes other than for what it was intended for, when even Republican Presidents (Nixon and Ford) were compassionate and it was not just a catch phrase, when both parties compromised to get legislation passed. In other words a time when government was important and the people and not just corporations had the voice and ears of their elected officials. Before we were told the government was the problem not the solution. The only thing I see about less government is less rec centers, public pools, good schools, more litter, less public works, more despair, more jails, less higher education grants, less public health clinics, etc… We complain about government spending and we see less of it but more being spent. At least back then we saw were our money went and got something out of it (especially for children). Now we see and get nothing. But I guess we should wait for it to trickle down. And do you know the dictionary definition of trickle – To flow or fall in drops or in a thin stream. To move or proceed slowly or bit by bit – That about sums it up.

Cost of borrowing money will go up. employer will have to pay more interest. your raise will be less then it would have been.
Considering that the US lost it’s AAA rating more than 3/4 a year ago, wouldn’t those rates have already started their impression of a Saturn V if that were going to happen? Raises haven’t been much of sh*t since the 1980’s for many lower and middle class workers, so why would a rating decrease change things now?
The US, even with AA credit, is able to borrow money at lower rates than countries with better ratings simply because of our past record. If you or anybody else wants that to change, all you have to do is keep cheerleading for this gridlock and division that created this mess in the first place.

Meanwhile, a lot of people in America are unemployed and are struggling to fill up their gas tanks and put food on the table. I think it would have made a huge statement if they had cancelled the correspondents dinner and given all the money they spent on it to a homeless shelter or, better yet, a children’s charity (of course people would inevitably complain about the choice of charity). If Abraham Lincoln were alive today he might not even recognize the Republican Party.
When Lincoln first joined the GOP it was led by men — then considered radicals — whose primary agenda was to free the slaves. Lincoln guided it towards being a moderate progressive party with a wide appeal to the majority of Americans, which helped him win the 1860 presidential election.
Lincoln would also be appalled by all modern legislative assaults on human and civil rights. He would equate all recent attempts by various states ranging from denying civil rights for gays, to telling women what they could or could not do with their bodies, and repudiation of equal pay for equal work, as ill-disguised attempts to subjugate minorities and women.
(What GOP War on Women? LOL)
Finally, Lincoln would advise Republicans to start working with each other instead of engaging in endless bickering, as well as returning to the negotiating table with the Democrats. Lincoln knew successful American politics has always involved *compromise*, starting with the Founding Fathers creating the Constitution.
(OMG, not the *C* word?!)
And certainly Lincoln would testify if he could successfully negotiate and comprise in the midst of the greatest internal crisis our country has ever faced, so can and should the leaders of today’s Republican Party.
(The author used it again!!)

Occupy Wall Street demonstrators, whose anti-greed message spread worldwide during an eight-week encampment in Lower Manhattan last year, plan marches across the globe tomorrow calling attention to what they say are abuses of power and wealth.
Occupy groups across the U.S. have protested economic disparity, decrying high foreclosure and unemployment rates that hurt average Americans while bankers and financial executives received bonuses and taxpayer-funded bailouts. In the past six months, similar groups, using social media and other tools, have sprung up in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

You talk about ID theft, the Republican brand now stands for all Lincoln stood against, it doesn’t even represent Reagan, it is like the Catholic Church moving from Rome to Las Vegas. The Republicans are busy reversing the government of this country to weak, corrupt, immoral, independent state rule, very similar to the goals of the south in the 1800s. This would be like the old county system in Georgia that gave the minority south Georgia population all the power, the Republican Party has bought minority rule for this country. If they were half as creative in solving the nation’s problems as they were in rearranging furniture to gain power when they can’t get the popular vote, and protect their selfish positions this country would be well on its way to another 100 years of progress. But instead they are obstructionist, and damn close to being revolutionist to the country they claim to love as they destroy it. Very similar to the Confederacy, these people do not care about this country, and the very nation that Lincoln saved and died for, over 100 years ago.
They have done the same thing with religion too if one cares to look. Loopholes become commandments. Our way or the highway, nope Jesus wouldn’t recognize his group either. We have allowed them to buy us, even our names.

Although there exists some evidence that tax cuts lead to growth, like under Reagan for example, the Bush tax cuts collapsed the economy and have ALWAYS increased the deficit…..furthermore, spending cuts have ALWAYS slowed growth…..Bill Clinton INCREASED TAXES, grew the economy, and REDUCED THE DEFICIT TO ZERO…!!!!

You REALLY need to recheck as to the CAUSE of your problems:
Not better off…
1) my house is worth less — Housing bubble exploded under BUSH; Republican policies caused the decline in housing value
2) my 401k is stagnant – Stock market declined to its worst value under Bush…lest you forget, stock market declined under 8000 which caused 401K’s to bite it big!! Market is now over 12000 under Obama….
3) gas is expensive – Gas first went over $4/gallon under Bush! Oil companies set the energy polcy under Bush/Cheney…and now, the US is EXPORTING gasoline!!
4) business is stagnant – Business s more profitable. Problem is that business is obtaining profits on the BACKS of labor…and not hiring labor!!
5) The future looks uncertain – That is LIFE in a nutshell!! The question you should ask is: Are your more or less optimistic about the future?? Me — QUITE optimistic…..better than I was four — and eight years ago!!

SteveAtl – “How is your home value doing?
How is your retirement return going?
Have you tried getting a loan lately?
Do you commute with Adam in the Prius and not use gas at $4.00 a gallon?”
Okay, I’ll try to answer these in turn:
1. How is your home value doing – Just fine, I bought on the lower east side of Manhattan, and RE prices have been fairly stable for the last 5 years. However, if you were foolish enough to buy into an overpriced subdivision made from pre fab parts, you are probably getting soaked. Can’t help you with you lack of vision.
2. Retirements been great. I took a little bit of a hit back in 2008 when the ecomnomy tanked, but since I didn’t run for the hills, my portfoliaos have all rebounded nicely. Of coursr a lot of the investment income is sheltered from any CG taxes.
3.I don’t usually borrow, unless it can benefit me in some way. Recently I took out a loan for $26,000 to buy a new Can Am. Sat on the money for 1 montrh and then paid the loan back before the first payment came due. Great way to keep your credit rating up.
4. I do have a Prius, but it’s usually parked in the garage unless I plan to do some extensive travel, so gas really doesn’t affect me that much. I have noticed that it’s gone down since the last time I filled up about a month ago.
Any other questions?

Our president is a riot. No surprise his comic timing was so good at his dinner with firends the other night. He had some really great one liners he didn’t use. Like when he told us he would give health insurance to 40 million unisureds at no cost. That was really funny. Or the time he promised that he would increase the cost of energy. Then after actually doing it, he claimed somebody else did it. What a joker. How about giving millions and millions of our dollars to companies he knew would fail. What a sense of humor. Then said he would cut our deficit in half while spending more money than any president in history. Then the one about how he would not hire lobbyists in his administration while he was offering jobs in his administration to lobbyists. That is the art of humor. Bend the truth with a surprise ending. I love the one when he claims he is going to penalize the oil companies knowing full well that it will be a tax on everyone who drives a car. His newest joke is the student loan act. His own party put an expiration date on the act calling for an incrase in interest this year and he was not present for the original vote. Now he wants to vetoe the Republican passed act rather than use money from his own private slush fund. What a joker. Or how about his Democrat controlled Senate who can’t bring up a bill for a vote while Obama lies about it being Republicans who can’t get anything done. I could go on and on. But you all know the lies.

For our federal government hating, historically illiterate fake conservatives”
I. Of the Origin and Design of Government in general, with concise Remarks on the English Constitution.
Paine begins this section by making a distinction between society and government, and then goes on to consider the relationship between government and society in a state of “natural liberty”.
He next tells a story of a few isolated people living in nature without government, and explains that the people find it easier to live together rather than apart; thus, they create a society.
As the society grows, problems arise, and the people meet to make regulations in order to mitigate the problems. As the society continues to grow, a government becomes necessary to enforce these regulations, which over time, turn into laws.
Soon, there are so many people within the society that they cannot all gather in one place to make the laws, so they begin holding elections. This, Paine argues, is the best balance between government and society.

I never said that I lived in a house. And yes, people buy apartments all the time in NYC. As to the Can Am, I wanted something a little more manuverable with a larger profile than a standard 2 wheel. Traffic in New York can get dicey, so the more they see of you the better. Plus the Can Am has more storage capacity for longer trips.

The economy had begun to go into a recession at the end of the Clinton presidency and was just beginning to recover.
Not according to the NBER (you know, the organization whose purpose it is to determine when recessions begin and end
) it didn’t.
The NBER’s Business Cycle Dating Committee has determined that a peak in business activity occurred in the U.S. economy in March 2001. A peak marks the end of an expansion and the beginning of a recession. The determination of a peak date in March is thus a determination that the expansion that began in March 1991 ended in March 2001 and a recession began. The expansion lasted exactly 10 years, the longest in the NBER’s chronology

Steve USA – “Can’t speak for Butch but putting up a large amount of Cash is common in Condo’s because you also have HOA fee’s or whatever they call them in NYC.”
Exactly, it’s the co-op fees along with Maintenence costs etc.. Unlike a traditional condo, you are actually purchasing part of the building, and share the responsibility with the other owners. It’s a great deal, because there are some great tax write offs, plus with a co-op, you are a shareholder with the other residents which allows for a much better run operation and a better quality of life.

For YOU especially Right and Mike:
The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle. The conflict has been exciting, agitating, all-absorbing, and for the time being, putting all other tumults to silence. It must do this or it does nothing.
If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground; they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.
This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle.
Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.
Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows, or with both.
The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.
Men may not get all they pay for in this world, but they must certainly pay for all they get. If we ever get free from the oppressions and wrongs heaped upon us, we must pay for their removal. We must do this by labor, by suffering, by sacrifice, and if needs be, by our lives and the lives of others. ~Frederick Douglass, 1857

Sadly you trickled on wingnuts like to act like it’s all a one way street. That business exists to provide profit only and jobs are simply a by-product of said profitable business.
You ignore the fact that the people doing the jobs are what truly drives the profit. Treat them good, provide fair wages and even benefits (like helping with insurance and such), and your profits go up cause your peeps are happy and can live a good middle class life.
Pay them $hit, give your CEO’s and upper management out of whack perks and exorbitant pay, then tell the fools laboring for you that you can’t share the record profits with them or hire more folks to help with the stretched labor that you have, then profits suffer.
Now… that being said… some of these pension plans that handed out back way in the day were, and are, simply unsustainable, and were foolish to begin with.
