‘The core of the problem lies with the Republican Party’

Thomas E. Mann of the Brookings Institution and Norman Ornstein of the American Enterprise Institute, two of the most respected non-partisan political analysts in Washington, go ahead and say it:

“We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.

The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.

When one party moves this far from the mainstream, it makes it nearly impossible for the political system to deal constructively with the country’s challenges.”

Yup. That sums it up nicely, I’m afraid.

And as they conclude, the situation is not going to change until the Republicans are forced to pay a very heavy price for their extremism at the polls, and that’s not likely to happen anytime soon. The result is a paralyzed system of governance at a critical time in this nation’s history.

THe religious zealots of the right are scary. Great example is what’s happening in TN with the legislation to remain in the stone ages…great quote the religious right should heed:

“I fear that these bills, written to give us what they think we want, will have the opposite effect. By legislating our Christianity, what they’re really doing is taking it away from us.”

EDITORIAL: “Obama embraces Islam”

“No matter what the source of the delusion, no political movement that exalts the Koran can peaceably coexist with the concept of freedom at the root of Western governance. Islamist notions of democracy are constrained by the strictures of their religion. Radical Muslims reject the humanistic values that gave birth to modern Western government; the self-evident truths regarding everyone’s inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are just so much infidel heresy to the Islamists. There are no inalienable rights under political Islam, only submission to the will of Allah.”

The two institutions you mention are moderate, but the two authors are not. One of them considers himself “centrist,” which doesn’t mean much. His bio says he’s close friends with Al Franken. That says it all. The other author has done work for two different democrats, a senator and a representative. I guess mentioning that would give the reader too much information on the sources of the original article.

So much for Biden’s comments about what Romney would have done. What a hypocrite !

“‘Manhunt’ details U.S. mission to find Osama bin Laden”

“When Obama met with his top aides April 28, two days before the raid, both Gates and Vice President Biden reiterated their opposition to the operation as too risky. Bergen writes that they argued that the evidence of bin Laden’s presence was circumstantial, the mission was too dangerous and relations with Pakistan would be destroyed.”

I think it’s time we gave the fuddyduddy a chance..the hip cool dude’s not doing any good

I would agree with you on that i the hip cool dude actually had a fair shot at doing ANYTHING. My problem with giving the GOP control again has nothing to do with 2000 – 2008. My problem with the current GOP is that they have behaved like little spoiled b*tches since they gained control of the House. It’s one thing to make your party platform one that would make the current POTUS a one-termer. It’s completely something different when you risk ruining the country to see that happen.

Obama’s goose was cooked from the day after the election in 2010. How many administrations have gone into their 4th year missing as many appointees as this current one? Part of the blame goes to Obama himself for not being more forceful in pushing for confirmations. However, I put more blame on the GOP in damn near blocking anything that Obama tries to do.

You can not run anything effectively if you don’t have people in place to perform the basic jobs necessary. You can’t play a World Series game with 5 players on defense and expect to win or even halfway function. The Democratic Party did some of the same stuff to Bush. However, when it came to things that helped the country as a whole, the Democratic Party put the partisaned bullsh*t aside and worked with Bush to get things passed. You can’t say the same thing has happened in the past 2 years. My question would be, why would you reward the GOP with anything when they have not shown that they can put country over party?

This did not happen in a vaccum. It has required two things to happen:

1. The Republicans had to sell themselves to Big Business. By catering strictly to the needs of it’s corporate masters, it natuarly appears to be extreme, scornful of compromise, etc.

2. The core Republican electorate had to dumb down to their current state of credulity whereby they believe whatever their politicians tell them, no matter how obvious a lie it is to the rest of us.

Unfortunately, since Republicans don’t seem to be getting any smarter, an improvement in the situation is definitely “not likely to happen anytime soon”.

Bro @ 4:17 – Here’s something that gives the GOP obstructionism a whole new light….

revelations about a private dinner of House Republicans on inauguration day in 2009 in which they plotted a campaign of obstruction against newly installed president Barack Obama.

During a lengthy discussion, the senior GOP members worked out a plan to repeatedly block Obama over the coming four years to try to ensure he would not be re-elected.

The disclosures – described as “appalling and sad” by Obama’s chief strategist David Axelrod – undermine Republican claims that the president alone is to blame for the partisan deadlock in Washington.

A detailed account of who was present at the dinner on that January 20 night and the plan they worked out to bring down Obama is provided by Robert Draper in ‘Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the US House of Representatives’, published this week.

In his book, Draper opens with the heady atmosphere in Washington on the days running up to the inauguration and the day itself, which attracted 1.8 million to the mall to witness Obama being sworn in as America’s first black president.

Those numbers contributed to a growing sense of unease among Republicans as much the defeat in the White House race the previous November. The 15 Republicans were in a sombre mood as they gathered at the Caucus Room in Washington, an upscale restaurant where a New York strip steak costs $51.

Attending the dinner were House members Eric Cantor, Jeb Hensarling, Pete Hoekstra, Dan Lungren, Kevin McCarthy, Paul Ryan and Pete Sessions. From the Senate were Tom Coburn, Bob Corker, Jim DeMint, John Ensign and Jon Kyl. Others present were former House Speaker and future – and failed – presidential candidate Newt Gingrich and the Republican strategist Frank Luntz, who organised the dinner and sent out the invitations.

“If you act like you’re the minority, you’re going to stay in the minority,” said Keven McCarthy, quoted by Draper. “We’ve gotta challenge them on every single bill and challenge them on every single campaign.”

The Republicans have done that, bringing Washington to a near standstill several times during Obama’s first term over debt and other issues.

On the more immediate future, they discussed targets such as Charlie Rangel, chairman of the House ways and means committee, who Gingrich said was vulnerable over his personal taxes. They would also target Treasury secretary Tim Geithner, demonstrate united and unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies, and release negative ads against vulnerable Democratic members of Congress.

Draper quotes Gingrich at the end of the meal: “You will remember this day. You’ll remember this as the day the seeds of 2012 were sown.”

Axelrod, who is based at Obama’s re-election campaign headquarters in Chicago, condemned the revelation as “sad, appalling but not terribly surprising”.

This subject is like a kid in a candy store; where do you start?

The most important point is the stark contrast of what makes up the two parties. This contrast is why Republicans will triumph, not just this November but to eternity. And, why the current log jam that bothers Misters Mann and Ornstein was necessary but temporary.

Republicans are bound together by a common thread – conservatism. There are varying degrees of dedication and we have our causes, but none outweigh the core principle. Plus, we are traditionalists.

Democrats however are a party of special interest groups. Each special interest group puts their goal ahead of everything else. The Environmentalists put tree hugging at the top. Gays put their quest for rights at number one. Unions put theirs ahead of the previous two, plus often totally disagree with the others. Blacks can be in any of the previous groups, but their main concern appears to be a continuing perception of discrimination and inequality.

No, Democrats are not bound together by a single core principle. They are together because they have nowhere else to turn and by themselves are not large enough to bring about the change they desire.

All the groups within the Democratic Party eventually bump up against a roadblock but it’s not Republicans. We might hinder their progress, as we have and continue to do now with Obama in office, but in the end their nemesis is the Constitution. They can’t achieve their goals without tinkering with the Constitution. And, it has been shown time and time again most Americans don’t want their tinkering.

numbers YOU are the one who doesn’t see the difference. also what difference does it make that the order came from a dem or a repub? the point is that people let fear and prejudice rule out over justice, prudence, common sense, and equality.

Really??

http://www.opensecrets.org/industries/index.php

8 out of 13 groups listed at that link have donated more to the GOP since 2011.

Here’s a list of the top industries contributing to members of the 112th Congress during the 2011-2012 election cycle. Out of those industries, 39 out of 50 gave more to Republicans than they did to Democrats. Also, 35 of the top 50 had a Republican as their single highest recipient.

Here are the top 25 GOP gifters. The total contributed by the top 25 runs in excess of $148.1 Million.

Here’s the top 25 Dem gifters. The total contributed by the top 25 is more than $125.6

Based on the contributions, one would be hard pressed to say that the Democratic Party is comprised more of special interest groups than the GOP. However, a person with a partisaned slant would have no problem at stating such non-factual stuff.

The system we have allows the minority party to obstruct the majority party especially in the Senate. It even allows one person whether it be a Senator or a President to obstruct everyone else by the use of the filibuster or the veto. But if you blame the Democrats or Republicans for being obstructionist remember if we had a parliamentary government the Republicans would be in complete control after the 2010 elections. The Democrats would have been in control after the 2006 election. With our system complete control is rare. The system was set up to make it very difficult for anyone to gain complete control.

Even the governments where there are multiple parties typically they form coalitions with parties on the same side of the spectrum. Rarely do the parties on the left and right have to cooperate.

Not only does the veto and the filibuster impede control but the three separate branches of government impedes control also. You need to win the Presidency, House and 60 people in the Senate and have a Supreme Court which agrees with you.

As far as the Republicans paying heavily in the poles, I thought they did in 2008. The Democrats had 60 votes in the Senate, the House and the Presidency but they lost it.

The only constant in politics is change. The leading party in Canada is now the conservative party and the liberal government party which was the prime party for years in Canada is now a third party.

you know less than dick about the law; don’t even deign to lecture me or anyone else on it. and keep your hateful race baiting opinions to your damn self.

Well, I’m getting ready for Saturday night at Billy Bob’s and don’t have time to say much. I’ll just let this Frank Sinkus speak for me. Our problem is we go too easy on the libruls and the Communists. We need to start using some of the weapons the 2nd Amenment gives us. I mean, that Amenment don’t say nothing about using the weapons for just self-defense. So let’s just open up and start blasting the people that don’t want what we want. Heck with this voting stuff. We tried that and you can see what that got us. Picking these libruls off as they walk into the polls would be a good start. We could drag their bodies out onto the grass and make a path for ourselfs.

I’ll be sure and drink a PBR or 10 for the good Conservatives on here. The rest of you can set around and worry about what we’re going to do. I say we all pull a Dick Cheney and invite a librul to go hunting with us.

While the Democrats may have moved from their 40-yard line to their 25, the Republicans have gone from their 40 to somewhere behind their goal post.

I’m not sure that the hyper-intolerant neocons are even in the stadium anymore.

McCarthyism is still VERY strong in the Republican Party! Is that not right out of science fiction?

And other than the USA, only one country in the entire industrialized world has a lower percentage of people who believe in evolution. THAT is the staggering level of insanity, intransigence and intentional ignorance in the GOP.

We are officially and royally screwed.

You know you really need to calm down but that said I see that you view history from the prism of today and not from the time in which it happened.

In other words, flaws and all our founding fathers were able to set up a system of government unparalleled in the history of the world …….. one that in time was structured to grant freedom to all men and women and get us to where we are today ……… the envy of the world.

By the way, I assume you were aware of this:

“Slavery was officially established in Virginia in 1654, when Anthony Johnson (a black man) convinced a court that his servant (also a black man), John Casor, was his for life. Johnson himself had been brought to Virginia some years earlier as an indentured servant (a contracted person who must work from five to seven years for no wages in exchange for food and shelter before being freed) but he had saved enough money to buy out the remainder of his contract and that of his wife.

The court ruling in Johnson’s favor resulted in Casor becoming the first state-recognized slave in Virginia.”

Jam,
It wasn’t as bad as last year. No felonies that I know of. A few got kicked off the team and a whole slew got suspended for the first three games. All starters. Good thing they have a lax schedule, al- though the Missouri game might come back to bite them as this is their first year in the SEC/first SEC game and they will be trying to make themselves somewhat accountable

Oh really? I guess the word HISTORY is what gave me away huh?

I’m always amused that some people think they are the only ones who know anything on this blog. Yes, scout, I KNOW my black history. I also know that Johnson paid by way of Karma for what he did to Casor.

PS: I also know that Johnson would’ve been called Clarence Thomas in today’s “prism”

Ah, the usual race to the Nazi analogy. Bookman gets all wee-weed up when you call a liberal a facist. Off course he forgets his own use of the Analogy when Bush was president. Sad that such a hypocrite sits on the AJC editorial board. You would think they could fine one intelligent progressive and not have to prop up this clown.

Not to worry. When the Republicans take over the White House and the Senate as well as the house, Jay will have the co-operation he desires. Once the Socialist Communists are gone things will be well. When the regressive party is stopped from implementing the failed polices of Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Castro, Pelosi, Reid and Obama, we will get the government out of free enterprise and again move this country forward into the twenty first century. They say you can’t fix stupid, but we can vote it out in November.
