One of the battlegrounds of the 2012 presidential campaign will be younger voters, as the Associated Press reports:
WASHINGTON — Once thought to be solidly behind President Barack Obama, younger voters burdened by a bleak employment picture, high gas prices and student loan debt are being aggressively wooed by the Democrat and his likely Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.
In 2008, Obama had a 34-point advantage over Republican Sen. John McCain among voters under age 30. He won about two-thirds of the vote in that age group.
But a new Harvard poll suggests the president may face a harder sales job with younger voters this time around. Obama led Romney by 12 points among those ages 18-24, according to the survey. Among those in the 25-29 age group, Obama held a 23-point advantage.
To keep that advantage among young voters, Obama is campaigning to keep interest rates on student loans at their current level. Unless Congress takes action by July, those rates are scheduled to double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. According to Obama, “that’s basically a $1,000 tax hike for more than 7 million students across America.”
However, the House Republican budget makes no provision for such a change, which puts Romney in a bit of a pickle. Should he side with House Republicans, or should he side with college students and recent college graduates? On Monday, he made his choice.
“Particularly with the number of college graduates that can’t find work or that can only find work well beneath their skill level, I fully support the effort to extend the low interest rate on student loans,” Romney told reporters.
Basically, Romney decided that the best way to beat Obama was to copy from him, at least on this issue. Maybe the strategy will work; maybe it won’t. But I suspect it would work at least a little bit better if Romney could also pull off something like this:

Despite the Bush administration’s unprecedented record of failure, today’s Republicans want to continue those policies. While Republicans created their own reality to mask Bush’s legacy, the American people have been left with its aftermath.
They can’t forget an eight-year administration marked by two wars, recession, failure in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, enormous environmental degradation and the biggest terrorist attack on U.S. soil. So, Republicans know the only way they can peddle Bush redux is by eliminating all mention of the original and putting its carbon copy under a different name.
“Bushnesia” might benefit today’s Republicans by allowing them to try to regurgitate Bush’s disastrous policies. But Americans remember the Bush administration’s record, too. Voters know that repeating the same mistake and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.
That anyone would vote Republican is mute testimony to the abject stupidity of the 3rd grade American populace. How stupid would someone have to be to forget the damage that George W. Bush has inflicted on this country?

. From where I sit, an improved economy will pretty much wipe away the need for “compassion”.
I don’t know that one’s take on social issues = compassion. But otherwise, you’re point does strike at what got me thinking about this in the first place. Obviously if virtually all people are doing better financially, and are more mobile, they’re more likely to be *able* to vote with their feet and leave the states with crappier laws regarding reproductive rights, marriage equality, etc.
So it’s not always that clear-cut a choice, I guess, is what I was saying.

But, when she came into the press conference late and said she was sorry but she had been pinned down by snipers, she won me over! Ron Paul already has the youth vote locked up. He drew over 6000 students each at appearances at UCLA, UC Berkley, and Chico State. He does the same wherever he goes and whatever college he goes to. Several thousand stood in the pouring rain the other day near Independence Hall in Philadelphia just to see him and hear him speak. Rallies of youth are happening all over the world in support of this great man. Obama has lost the youth vote. He lied to them, shipped more of them off to die in Afghanistan and Iraq and saddled them with yet more debt.
The youth know that only Ron Paul speaks of freedom and getting rid of the horrible and oppressive Federal Reserve that enslaves us all with endless debt and worthless money.
The youth are not as enveloped in fear as the elderly. They don’t run to their benevolent government when they rattle the chains and scream “terrorist.” They can see through the lies and Mitt is nothing but lies as is Obama.
They can see that there is virtually NO difference between these two clowns and that only a Ron Paul presidency will turn this country around.
The main stream media can lie all it wants about the youth, but they are not falling for the entrenched monopoly. They get their news from the internet where lies do not pass for “fair and balanced” as they do at the AJC and elsewhere.

As the youth in our country ages they become more conservative in their political views. There are of course exceptions as evidenced on Jay’s blog whereby terminal leftist disease takes over minds and the victims never grow into clear thinking adulthood.

“Ron Paul…and ONLY Ron Paul, if elected, can—and would—STOP THEM BOTH (socialism and fascism) COLD…in their disgusting, slimy tracks!”
How exactly is he going to do what his supporters claim he will do without the support of Congress?
Forget the Dems for a second…… He would have “mutiny on the bounty” within his own Party, but it really doesn’t matter because he isn’t going anywhere except back to his district

Not a given. The older I get the more liberal I get. I was very conservative when I was younger.

Thomas…….. now switch over to Mr Liberty and keep acting like there is tons of Ron Paul support
You might even want to come up with a 3rd blogging persona
Ron Paul: on the road to nowhere
That would be a good name

Sadly, your particular case while rare does unfortunately occur. Can you recall at approximately what age you were stricken?

How does anyone state with a straight face that Obama ruined our economy? Do they not remember October, 2008 and the Paulson bank bailout plan to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars? And why was that necessary????
