Romney, Obama fighting for the young vote

One of the battlegrounds of the 2012 presidential campaign will be younger voters, as the Associated Press reports:

WASHINGTON — Once thought to be solidly behind President Barack Obama, younger voters burdened by a bleak employment picture, high gas prices and student loan debt are being aggressively wooed by the Democrat and his likely Republican challenger, Mitt Romney.

In 2008, Obama had a 34-point advantage over Republican Sen. John McCain among voters under age 30. He won about two-thirds of the vote in that age group.

But a new Harvard poll suggests the president may face a harder sales job with younger voters this time around. Obama led Romney by 12 points among those ages 18-24, according to the survey. Among those in the 25-29 age group, Obama held a 23-point advantage.

To keep that advantage among young voters, Obama is campaigning to keep interest rates on student loans at their current level. Unless Congress takes action by July, those rates are scheduled to double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent. According to Obama, “that’s basically a $1,000 tax hike for more than 7 million students across America.”

However, the House Republican budget makes no provision for such a change, which puts Romney in a bit of a pickle. Should he side with House Republicans, or should he side with college students and recent college graduates? On Monday, he made his choice.

“Particularly with the number of college graduates that can’t find work or that can only find work well beneath their skill level, I fully support the effort to extend the low interest rate on student loans,” Romney told reporters.

Basically, Romney decided that the best way to beat Obama was to copy from him, at least on this issue. Maybe the strategy will work; maybe it won’t. But I suspect it would work at least a little bit better if Romney could also pull off something like this:

Seems to me if Republicans are really about accountability, they’d support cutting entitlements and extending eligibility for those who are, say, aged 45 and up, as they’re the ones who supported the politicians who got us into this mess. Those below 45 (or whatever age you want to pick as the group that’s responsible) would have current benefits rates apply to them.

Now play fair……… You are not supposed to mention that or the fact that a number of Republicans who voted against the stimulus had MUCHO pork barrel spending within that very bill

They get to look at their constituents in the eye and in same breath and say I voted against that waste of money, but check out the ground we are breaking on this new community center……. but failed to mention where those funds came from

In other words, the Romney strategy is to acknowledge the President inherited a mess, but his unfamiliarity with real-world business and economic management hindered the recovery, average Americans are paying the price, and Romney has a long and extensive record of experience in such matters.

Substituting that for “never mention Bush’s name again”, do you now see my comparason to the “evil rich” arguement[sic]?

I understand the argument that you are trying to make, but your comparison falls short in that no liberal here that I can recall has ever used the “evil rich” phrase, while there have been some conservatives that have suggested that the use of Bush’s name is off limits.

Another thing that is interesting; College graduates cannot find jobs and guess which group is hurting the most? The “Liberal Arts” majors who are the most “liberal of the liberal” of our graduates from the American education system. Obama certainly hasn’t done these people any favours. Right now the only thing going for job hunters are degrees either in the medical field (because we have so many old people) or in technical type degrees (engineering, etc.) and even these people are having to accept lowered wages and benefits and higher taxes. What Obama’s policies were designed to do from day one is to downgrade the expectation of the living condition for the American people. He is incrementally destroying hope and innovation in our society through regulation and free-spending of the taxpayer dollar in exchange for having people living a menial existance that is equal for all (which is the most important thing of all to him) and that is provided for by the “government”. But of course, he is also a firm believer that there must be a group of sophisticates/bureaucrats that rule over the lower classes because afterall, they are too stupid to do it for themselves. Progressive ideology is built upon this premise and so is Leninism and so is Socialism.

And Jay, maybe you should look at Germany and their austerity measures and the affect upon the German economy. Germany is one of the few promising economies in the world right now. The biggest difference between Germany and Italy, the UK, France, Spain and Greece is Germany never bought into the Socialist agenda in such a big way as the others. They always maintained a great respect for the free market and private sector industry and they kept social spending and government costs lower than the others and they kept a healthful watch on government regulation. Therefore, their austerity measures were more effective even with the whole world being in recession. No their economy is not without its troubles and in a world that is in recession, whose is not? But compared to ours and the other countries I referred to, they are in great shape. Merkel is a strong leader. Obama is not. I wish we had someone like her over here.

No, why should you, right? We’re getting $1 worth of government services and only paying 70 cents for them. A great deal, keep it coming!

And of course, Obama’s not spending a dime that hasn’t been appropriated by Congress.

For starters, Jay, I’m not receiving any direct government benefits, and never have. You’d have a much stronger point if I did.

I’ve stated here before that any tax increases need to be across the board, and not target any particular demographic group. We all need to shoulder the burden, if needed. However, I still firmly believe that we’re spending waaaay too much money, from entitlements to defense spending to discretionary spending. You’ve claimed in the past that there’s just not enough fat to trim from the budget to make any meaningful dent in the budget. Put me in charge, and I guarantee I could easily cut 10-20 % overnight. In fact, this Country may never recover from the damage inflicted on it by George W. Bush and the Republican Party.

Paul,

I think in his second term, he will try to level the playing field but needs a new house.

Immigration is open to compromise and getting closer to a deal.

Education, infrastructure and green energy is stay the course.

funny post, but a bit naive, what in the heck are we doing subsidizing collegiate education? the same question could be asked for oil, corn, birth control as well. when does it stop? till some billionaire is supporting directly 1000 gov’t workers and maybe 5 american families that need help. good grief!

The primary lesson to be learned is that on every major measurement the country lost ground during George W. Bush’s two terms. While Bush was in office, the median household income declined, poverty increased, childhood poverty increased even more and the number of Americans without health insurance spiked. His “neo-con” foreign policy strengthened Iran by making Iraq its theological ally, added trillions to the national debt and inflicted unprecedented damage to America’s image abroad.

It comes as little surprise that discussion of the former Republican president and his policies has been almost nonexistent even as the next Republican administration could look and act much like Bush’s did. Reviewing the Bush administration’s economic record serves a useful purpose for those with short-term memory loss.

When it comes to job creation, the Bush administration produced the worst results of any president since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics started keeping records in 1939. Yet the GOP is once again committed to rolling out the same economic policies that Bush followed. Their plan is to resurrect the “voodoo economics” of tax cuts for the wealthy that undermined the thriving economy they inherited from the Democrats. Their economic philosophy resulted in record job losses and the worst recession in American history. The tax cuts for the wealthy allowed millionaires and billionaires to get richer while average household income fell for the first time on record.

Although the Republicans promised their tax cuts would pay for themselves they didn’t do so, instead they added trillions to the nation’s deficit and squandered the surplus the Clinton administration left. Further adding to the economic calamity was the Bush administration’s lack of appetite for regulation that allowed the banking industry to write its own rules, and as a result, the industry deregulated itself into a financial meltdown due to reckless lending and the administration’s failure to monitor complex mortgage-backed securities .

Well, there you have it! A success on every level. I, myself, am going to vote for a RepugNOwecan’t for President. No matter who’s running!
