So you’re sitting at home minding your own business and you hear noises from the place next door, which hasn’t been occupied for months.
You look outside and see two people, an older man and woman, at the front of the place, trying to open the door. What do you do?
Bake your new neighbors a pie? Call the police to report strangers next door?

Jean Kalonji and his wife, Angelica, were held at gunpoint by neighbors outside the home their son had just purchased for them.
If you’re Robert Canoles of Porterville, you apparently take it upon yourself to grab your teenaged son, arm him and yourself with AR-15s, then march next door to confront and hold the terrified couple at gunpoint until sheriff deputies arrive.
Read the story by the AJC’s Christian Boone. Once deputies arrived, the older couple were arrested, charged with loitering and prowling and forced to spend the night in jail. Nobody paid much heed to their explanation that their son had just purchased the empty house and that they were changing the locks at the place they planned to make their new home.
But it turned out they were telling the truth.
As a result, the couple has been freed. Canoles and his son, on the other hand, have been arrested, charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal trespass. They now sit in jail.
“I don’t know what they can charge me with,” Canoles is quoted as saying before the arrest. “This is my Second Amendment right. Look, this is the country out here, and we protect our own.”
The good news is that this time, nobody got injured or killed, which under the circumstances was a definite possibility. But it also illustrates what can happen when loose talk about “Second Amendment rights” becomes translated in certain minds into a license to become vigilantes.

“Shut up or I’ll shoot,” Canoles allegedly told the couple after they tried to explain that their son now owned the modest home sitting on 11 acres. Canoles asked to see the closing paperwork, which the Kalonjis didn’t have.
See…..a bunch of wannabees police, investigators. Somebody should have emptied a clip on them and sorted out the paperwork later.

BMDPD – “Look, just because I told you the pretense in which the second amendment is written is to protect yourself from an overbearing government, that doesn’t mean that I am a paranoid hack that thinks the government is coming to seize my property.”
I’m perfectly familiar with the second amendment. And as to your math references, I hold a BA and MBA in finance backed up by 20 years working in the financial sector. What I can’t figure out is how anyone could even come close to trying to defend what these morons did. The only thing that makes it more pathetic, is that the police just joined in right along. The only thing missing in this story is Boss Hogg and and Sherriff Rosco rolling up in the Caddy before being foiled by the Duke boys.

Sounds sensidble and something the coupld should have done. A little thinking about possible problems can avoid a lot of potential discomfort. A phone call to the son by the police would not have helped. Can’t show any proof of ownership over the phone.

If you are on your property and some strange people come at you with guns in a threatening manner, you are within your rights to “Stand your ground” if you perceive their actions as a threat to your life. Based on what I do for a living, anybody coming at me with a gun is perceived as a threat unless they show credentials, have a uniform on, or announce themselves well in advance. If you make any threatening move, then may G*d have mercy on both our souls.

The “people” refered to in the 2nd ammendment are ONLY those who compose a militia. In today’s America, that would be the Military, and by extension, the police, The 2nd amendment makes this quite clear. If you cannot understand this, your reading comprehension skills are pretty much zilch.

A couple of points:
1. Why don’t we just have a law that’s called “Shoot 1st and ask question later” then all the gun nuts can be covered and not jailed.
2. Some people have bad hearts and if this was the case it could have turned tragic, you don’t always have to be shot.
3. Sonny is older enough to join the military, why not do that if he wants to protect his nation and neighbors.

The term “redneck” is just a code word for and used by people who have to find some class of people to feel superior to…I’m native to that cultural milieu and am quite at home there. There are good folks and bad folks, with most a combination of the two, just like any other culture any where else on our Celestial Ball of Blue. The issue is you either want people to get involved when they see things that don’t look right or you don’t. You whiners keep wanting to bash gun toting people who are willing to get involved because it might occasionally go wrong but that’s the only thing keeping thugs from looking around, not seeing any cops nearby, and taking your wallet or purse. Agreed and I would like to make clear that when I said they deserved the term I meant the term in its negative ways and did intend to show superiority. As I feel we are almost all above the level of thinking displayed by these two. They gave basis to all those who would show a stereotype. It does not mean I feel we have more value as a person, just a higher level of thinking
It is all in how the term is used, just like with other terms of bigotry across all races. Most times it applies in a comical way but sadly it also applies in cases of negativity as this.

RB from Gwinnett @ 4:29,
You’d ALMOST have a valid point there, if the Canoles were interfering to save someone’s life. Earlier, I posted an example about having a drunk, violent neighbor kicking the *bleep* out of his wife again. I would call the police, (and have), but if it’s happening on the porch, in the yard, or in view of me, and I see that he’s about to kill her, I might interfere with my weapon before the police arrive. Interesting, (but not surprising here in the land of “boot heels belong on a woman’s neck”) that nobody responded to that.
The Canoles were not responding to a threat on anybody’s physical safety.

I think the state knew they had lost when members of the jury and judge agreed that they would have “shot the SOB.”

Simple Truths – 4:50
Anyone who understands US history and the English language cannot honestly intrepret it any other way. The conservative Supreme Court members are nothing but lackeys for the Republican Party who are bought and paid for by Big Business which includes the NRA and gun manufacturers. Money for elections and re-elections and profit mean more to these people than the 40,000 Ameircans who lose their lives each year to guns. Only in America.

josef @ 4:54,
Of course! We do respect “what G-d intended” in these parts.
Funny… I wonder how many of those who defended the Canoles as being “good neighbors” have also turned away and refused to involve themselves when witnessing (or hearing) domestic violence in their neighborhoods? You know, you can only live so many years without witnessing or hearing it. Happens in every kind of neighborhood, without regard to race, religion, orientation, or socioeconomic factors. How many of them… said…. “That’s none of our business. Let them work it out,” and did nothing?

I am a firm believer in the Second but it would take a lot more than what these two supposedly saw to make me pull out the guns. This could be two rednecks looking for some reason to shoulder their weapons to make them feel powerful or it could be two people that are very familiar with the crime situation in their area. Personally, I think the prior is accurate. One thing for sure, the lady business owner in Macon sure excercised her 2nd amendment right this past weekend and she is alive for it today. Research it Jay. Of course you probably already know about it but that story wouldn’t play for your liberal friends like this one, would it?
And Obama is out there wooing the college students (on the taxpayers dime) with promises of free degrees. What in the hell does a college degree matter if you graduate and you can’t find a job? Obama is not about job creation. He is about spending taxpayer money for continuance of political power. He will never understand that without one (job creation in the private sector) there is not the other (spending taxpayer money by the government). This guy is in deep trouble and all the liberal fairy dust in the world (provided by media people like Jay) won’t help him. I just sent in my maximum allowable contribution to the Romney campaign. I haven’t yet contributed to the “PACS” but I intend to. Maybe I am throwing it away and maybe I am saving this country. The only reason I bring it up is to remind you libs to do the same for your man Obama. Of course receiving checks, not sending them, is what liberals do best, isn’t it?

I remember back when I was working in the newspaper, there came in a story about a woman in my home town who had killed her husband, stabbed him 157 times with a dinner fork. Seems she didn’t have hot cornbread for his turnip greens and complained. I recognized the names and these were “upstanding” people. I called Mama and asked her about it. She said there wasn’t a court in the county would convict her, “everybody knew he had it coming.” Sure enough, when it went to trial she got off with a slap on the wrist. The judge put it this way, “he was good and dead by the 50th stab. There was a lot more went into this than cornbread and turnip greens!”

What is it the police in Georgia have against elderly people? Didn’t some old lady get killed by the APD during a botched drug raid, and now deputies high fiving private citizens who take the law into their own hands. The elderly population doesn’t need to fear “death panels”, they just need to stay out of Georgia.

Butch, I like my odds here vs the NYPD.
I haven’t read about a Black man being shot like 80 time while reaching for their wallet.
Or being raped with a mop handle IN the police station.

When I first read this story, I said Oh, Shyte! Not only is this couple going to be realeased and the charges dropped, but the two Holy Canoles are going to be up for some serious charges.
Sure enough, the charges were dropped and the Holy Canoles are in jail.
Friends, no matter how justified or how “right” you think you are, you simply cannot go around pointing rifles at people and holding them against their will until police arrive.
What was a lapse in judgment on the part of the Holy Canoles will likely result in some serious damage to their lives. If they have jobs, they will likely lose them. If they don’t spend time in jail, they will likely have to pay some serious fines.
The next shoe to drop is that this couple’s attorney is going to sue the police/sheriff or whatever they have there for false arrest. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a whopping settlement.
This should be a lesson to everyone. Just call the police. Let them handle it. Unless, of course, someone is trying to break into your house.
