Rock ‘n roll heaven a little more crowded

According to the Sunday Times of London, organizers of the 2012 Summer Olympics approached the manager of Keith Moon recently to ask if the Who drummer would be available to play as part of the closing ceremonies in this year’s games.

The manager replied that unfortunately, Keith was booked at another venue and would be unable to appear.

Keith will now have to share that gig with another famous rock drummer, the great Levon Helm of The Band, who died this week after a long fight with throat cancer. Helm, an Arkansas boy who never lost touch with his roots, played a central role in American rock history in the ’60s and ’70s.

And then, of course, there was the passing of America’s oldest living teenager, Dick Clark, longtime host of American Bandstand. Clark, too, played a critical role in the development of rock and roll, helping to convert it from a dangerous, rebellious form of music to a mainstream business opportunity. To Clark’s credit, he performed that function without ever seeming to lose respect for what that music really was. He was rock’s ambassador to mainstream American culture.

I thought for a while about how to mark the passing of both Helm and Clark. The most obvious way would have been to post an appearance by The Band on American Bandstand, but I’m quite sure without even researching the question that such a thing never happened. Let’s just say that Clark and Helm moved in different circles.

So, as a compromise, we turn to the Righteous Brothers:

“People don’t know Mitt Romney very well,” he said on CNN. “They see a businessman. They hope he has new ideas. When they find out what his ideas are, slashing taxes at the top for the very wealthy … they’re going to think, ‘This is very familiar. We’ve tried this. This was a big failure.’”

Axelrod said Romney’s campaign for the Republican nomination had been a negative one, based on attacking his opponents rather than spelling out ideas.

“When he does, I think people are going to judge them for what they are, which is backward-looking and a repeat of what got us into this mess in the first place,” he added.” Aol.

From the mid 50’s till now there has been a constant drumbeat from the black community for civil rights. In all this time, never once have I heard any civil rights leader ever speak about CIVIL RESPONSIBILITY. As for the Travon Martin case, civil rights leaders protested vigorously for the arrest of Zimmerman. If Travon’s shooter had been black, we would not have heard a peep out of them. Scout’s point, the arrest not withstanding, is that there is a serious double-standard in this country when it comes to black on black crime and white on black crime.
Get off your high horse, stop insulting us about lack of basic mental capacity, and maybe you will start to understand the situation.

For the racially obsessed here…

On December 23, 2011, my goddaughter, Jasmine Thar, a 16-year-old African American, was shot and killed while in my mother’s front yard in Chadbourn, North Carolina.

When the shot rang out, Jasmine was preparing for a routine shopping trip and doing what most teens do—texting. Two others, my niece and myself, were also injured in the shooting.

The 23-year-old Caucasian male who fired the fatal shot from the house across the street was taken in for questioning, but he has not been charged with a crime of any kind.

Because he claims it was an accident, the police let him go—despite the fact that he admits he fired the shot and police found a Confederate flag and Nazi literature in his home.

The message being sent is that you can shoot and kill someone like Jasmine and get away with it by simply claiming it was an accident.

Wonder why the corporal forgot about telling us repeatedly about this killing?

Things that make you go hmmm…

And yet, the message of civil rights is preached by civil rights leaders to the country as a whole, and not just in black churches. For years now the white community has been lectured vigorously about the need for civil rights. Since I don’t go to a black church, and I’ll bet you don’t either, neither of us can say, with accuracy, that civil responsibility is “a message preached from black churches across the country every week”. I was reading an article on the French election being a nostalgia for the last century. They’re not the only ones.

I would welcome the chance to talk about “it.” But, and I’m not trying to be an uppity ass here, but what I have to say about “it” IS from the study of history, and that history begins in our cultural milieu in Mesopotamia and comes forward at least four millenia. It’s pretty hard to discuss “it” with folks who have no further view than a couple of hundred years at best.

As long as you and others keep kicking sand and dirt into the faces of other Americans, yeah, this division is not disappearing anytime soon. If you want it to disappear, then you have to act like it and not just talk like it. Do you not realize that every single damn time you and others break out your patented “Jesse” and “Al” cards, that’s exactly what you do? You stir up unnecessary sh*t.

Jesse and Al do not speak for Black America. They speak for Jesse, Al, and whomever else designates them to do so. The Martin family designated them. They don’t speak for those who don’t ask them to speak for them. So, if you want the division to disappear, quit antagonizing it by assuming sh*t that is not true. If you want to know what’s going on in the Black community or the Black church, come hang with me. You can find out first hand what’s going on without the need to assume. I see where the tragic case of Travon Martin is back on the blog. The irony might be that the bail hearing of George Zimmerman could prove to be the unraveling of the prosecutions second degree murder case against Zimmerman. The lead detective may have blown it by the defense attorney’s questioning. This might turn out to be a case of negligent homicide. I was surprised to see Zimmerman as a slightly built man who appeared afraid and apologetic on the stand. It doesn’t excuse this case entirely but the usual standard of ABILITY, OPPORTUNITY and JEOPARDY might excuse Zimmerman on the first two considerations but hold him guilty on the last consideration of JEOPARDY. He wasn’t in JEOPARDY for his life because he was armed as a private citizen and following Martin. I still wonder why the Sanford police were so slow in arriving at the scene before this tragic event unfolded.

I was talking to some folks from back home. The Georgia, Alabama and Arizona anti-immigrant laws are all the rage. So, where’s the story that Mississippi refused to pass its? It just isn’t news. It’s not sensational enough.

I brought up to al Shariff the findings of the census on the composition of the American family. This is the first time we are able to come up with ZamVet’s much heralded data relative to same sex households and children. Guess what? Mississippi and Florida, among other Southern states, are heads and shoulders above the rest of the country in the number. When it comes to mixed race marriages, same thing. But…but…that’s not “news…” Coulda fooled me.

That’s what gets me. Folks yapping about what goes on in the Black Church obviously have not been in one in a while. The same thing that goes on in the White (Brown, Yellow or Red) Church, synagogue, temple or mosque.

Based on the reports and 911 tapes, the Sanford PD was there within a minute or two after the trigger was pulled.

True. The 10am-12pm time period on Sunday is still the most segregated time in the US.

Brosephus,

After the trigger was pulled. Sanford is not a big town and there was a lot of 911 dialogue recorded over what seemed to be several minutes that could have had police in the community sooner but this is only a supposition on my part.

Should we not talk about the existence of anti-Semitism too, Josef?
*******

Okay, let’s go there, Imam. Should we talk about “it” in terms of the black-white dichotomy you seem to be mired in? No. Should we talk about it in terms of the anti-Islamic situation? By all means.

That is, of course, unless you want to insist that the Hebrew Chirren are “a race.”

It is that. And the irony of it is that it’s the two hours when the segregated have the most in common.

A lot of Blacks, Asians and Hispanics in our church this morning as there is most Sunday mornings.

Oh, what the heck. Since we’re all PMS-ing today, I’ll throw mine in the mix:

Rampant misogyny on the personal and institutional levels, and double standards cross all racial, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic boundaries. How much are we loving the renewed fundamentalist fist grabbing the back of collective womanhood’s hair, shoving her head down…again? Exciting times we live in, huh?

All y’all can just kiss my cute little behind. Have a nice evening now, y’hear?

Don’t take this the wrong way, please, but why “our?” If “they” are there, is it at “your” sufferance or tolerance? And, again, not being snippy, but percentage wise in relation to their relative proportion of the local community? And, again, don’t misunderstand, but when we’re talking about segregation, it’s not just the white congregation that is segregated, but the black, brown, red and yellow, too.

Based on the initial report, the first officer was likely already in the neighborhood when the shot was fired. The time listed on the report is the same as the time of the 911 calls. It could be bad paperwork, but that is also supported by at least one of the 911 calls. One person calling in to report the shot talked about seeing flashlights within the first minute of the call. The second officer that responded also mentioned things in his accounting that would make it seem like they were there within a min or two of the shooting.

I’m going off of what I read from their reports and what I heard on the 911 tapes. I don’t think there has been a definite timeline put out with all the events on a single timeline though.

josef,

I’ve never taken a headcount or calculated percentages but we have regular attenders and I would presume church members from the minority community in the church on Sunday mornings. One of the soloists from the choir is Black. The majority though of attendees are white folks.

One church does not negate the segregation of thousands of other churches. I’ve even heard religious leaders state the same thing about Sunday morning segregation.

And I would say that you haven’t done a head count is a good thing. See, I felt guilty of the same “sin” when I brought the matter up to begin with.

Brosephus,

Like I indicated I don’t really know but if this goes to trial in the absence of a plea bargain, I’m sure it will come out from one side or the other. I’m certain of one thing though and that is that Zimmerman will be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.

Recon, 6:47,

There is not enough hard evidence to even bring this to trial. And with the media blitz since the shooting, how are you going to find a jury to sit the case?
