When Newt lectures the NRA, hilarity ensues

"Which end does the bullet come out of?"

"Which end does the bullet come out of?"

“The right to bear arms comes from our Creator, not our government.”
– Newt Gingrich

“Thou shalt not kill.”
– God

——————-

Most politicians wouldn’t dare use a speaking appearance before the National Rifle Association to criticize that powerful organization. But as Newt Gingrich demonstrated once again Friday, he’s not most politicians.

The NRA, he told the group’s annual convention, has been much too timid and moderate in its defense of gun rights. If elected president, he said, he will “submit to the United Nations a treaty that extends the right to bear arms as a human right for every person on the planet because every person on the planet deserves the right to defend themselves from those who would oppress them, those would exploit them, rape them or kill them.”

“Let’s take the George Soroses and the Hillary Clintons head on,” Newt said to the cheering crowd. “They represent a world in which elites disarm the rest of us so we are then helpless when elites turn sour and when evil reappears.”

mars-attacks-jack-nicolson-dies

Clearly, our Creator intended that all of his creatures, even Martians, be granted the right to bear arms.

Personally, I think Gingrich is himself being much too timid. Once again, he is failing to think in sufficiently grandiose terms. When our Creator guaranteed the right to bear arms (see below), surely He did not intend it to be limited to a planetary right, as Gingrich seems to suggest. Surely He meant it to be at least a solar-system right, if not galaxy-wide or universe-wide. It’s time that we acknowledge that.

The first step, of course, must be to guarantee that the right to bear arms extends to the moon base that President Gingrich will complete by the end of his second term. From there we can extend it to Mars, Jupiter, etc., and any other place where the elites might threaten to turn sour.

It is, after all, our duty as freedom-loving Americans — our Manifest Density.

————

*True, in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus was quoted as saying that “whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him.” The naive might see that as contradicting the God-given right to stand your ground.

But as Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America tells us, that quote has been misinterpreted and taken out of context. The liberal media cut out the part where Jesus explained that as you turn your other cheek, “pull your Glock and blow that SOB (son of Baal) to Kingdom Come.”

Okay, this IS funny and quite the break now that it’s not the Village Idiot stumping for the highest office in the land. I guess he’s also on staff as an “historical consultant” for the NRA

But, Jay, that quote from G-d is off target. “Thou shalt not MURDER.”
And as for Jesus and “turn the other cheek,” I repeat what Granddaddy taught me when I asked what you do when you get slapped there, too: “Well, Jody, the Scriptures are silent there. I prefer a .45!” But…what do the Pope and Canon Law say…are there special dispensations?

Trayvon Martin’s mother said she wants an apology from George Zimmerman. I want a sincere, heartfelt apology from The NRA and all gun manufacturers for the 30,000 deaths that occur each year in the US from firearms. Of course, this will never happen as the NRA and gun manufacturers are vastly more interested in profit than human suffering and deaths.

All you gun defenders will fervently defend you “right to keep and bear arms”. And yet, anyone who truly understands American history and our Constitution knows the founding fathers never meant for the kind of personal gun ownership we currently have which insurers such a yearly slaughter.

The human ability to rationalize was never on more prominent display that your quote of the 10 commandments as saying “Thou shall not MURDER.”

I’m not sure you’re presonally serious with that quote but many pseudo-religious gun nuts are when they make it. Growing up I always read the commandment as “Thou shall not KILL” (Charlton Heston told me so at least until he became NRA president) but when the conservative evangelicals were forced to acknowledge the Bible or change the way they define killing they chose to do the latter. The thnig about “Thou shall not bear false witness” was left by the wayside. Funny the way our personal biases get turned into revisionist history.

The lesson from this is how hopeless religion is at providing a true moral compass which must come from within. If it ain’t in your heart then it means nothing to you anyway. No book of dubious ancestry can convince me that killing is wrong. No twisted chain of rationalization can either. I just know it in my soul.

So, did God give this right to all peoples of the world? Does this God-given right to bear arms apply to nuclear arms, too? Then why are we upset with Iran and North Korea? A nuclear weapon is considered arms. If we follow Newt’s (ill-)logic, those nations can claim a God-given right to nuclear weapons to protect themselves (no matter if they call their god Allah, or Buddha).

Not to ruin the fun with a too serious discussion of philosophy, theology, myth, legend and history, but that was not rationalizing. It was a simple statement of fact, much as your distinction between outright lying and bearing of “false witness.”

You would have carried a lot more weight, however, had you not fallen heir to your own prejudices and rationalizations with “a book of dubious ancestry.” The ancestry of said book is pretty well established, springing from the story of Gilgamesh and coming forward from our Mesopotamian Cradle of Civilization.

Here is what a REAL LIBERAL anti-Second Amenment person does when faced with the scary truth:

“The case of African-American journalist Carl Rowan. When it gets “personal” opinions change very quickly and dramatically !!!

Carl Thomas Rowan (August 11, 1925 – September 23, 2000), was an American government official, journalist and author. Rowan was a nationally-syndicated op-ed columnist for the Washington Post and the Chicago Sun-Times. He was one of the most prominent black journalists of the 20th century.

Rowan gained public notoriety on June 14, 1988, when he shot a teenage trespasser, Neil Smith, who was on his property illegally. He was charged for firing a gun that he did not legally own.

Rowan was arrested and tried. During the trial, he argued that he had the right to use whatever means necessary to protect himself and his family. Critics charged hypocrisy, since Rowan was a strict gun control advocate.

In a 1981 column, he advocated “a law that says anyone found in possession of a handgun except a legitimate officer of the law goes to jail—period.” In 1985, he called for “A complete and universal federal ban on the sale, manufacture, importation and possession of handguns (except for authorized police and military personnel).” [4][5]

Private gun ownership had been illegal in the District of Columbia since 1975 [6] and the facts of the case were the talk of the town for many days.

Rowan was tried but the jury was deadlocked; the judge declared a mistrial and he was never retried. In his autobiography, Rowan said he still favors gun control, but admits being vulnerable to a charge of hypocrisy.[7]

And I can’t have a wry sense of humor and be a “true believer” at the same time? I am a believer, how “true” a one is up to question. I make no claims to have any patent on the “truith” along these lines. And “exposed” myself as? I’ve never tried to “hide” it.

I have no problem with Constantine’s “baselining” as you put it. From the historical perspective, the transferral of the Hebraic tradition and its grafting onto the Roman, Western tradition required such.

There has to be a reasonable balance, and I think recent events clearly show that not just anybody ought to be carrying and walking around with the false confidence a gun gives them. My point still stands.

Even if you are too old for the “militia” you have the right to bear arms as a “person”.

The Supreme Court says so. If you disagree ………. you can take it up with them.

You see the loose constructionist neocons and their activist judges think that the United States Constitution is a living, breathing document.

And that the meanings change with the times.

Economist Thomas Sowell in his Knowledge and Decisions argues that since the original designers of the Constitution provided for the process of changing it, they never intended for their original words to change meaning.

Oops…

I guess they contend that the need for a well regulated militia still applies today.

“I suggest you educate youself on exactly what a CITIZENS MILITIA is. It’s NOT the armed forces, just to get you started.”

No, but they are armed, and do seem to attract the reasonable and the unhinged alike. I wonder if they really have a truly devoted membership that would accept the decisions of their leadership should such leadership decide NOT to shoot. There are some very good people I know who have considered joining a militia or have been asked to, but have hesitated for just that reason. They’re not all as well-organized and controllable as they should be.

RF:

There is a time when a just pre-emtive war must be initiated.

For example, had one of our submarines spotted the Japanese fleet the night of 12/6/41 should we have attacked at dawn? YOU BET !

It happens in law enforcement everday. Nowhere is there a rule that the bad guy gets to shoot first.

I don’t think a citizen militia can take on our military.

Heck, even the police are militarized now.

I can’t believe scout will not opine on a scandal with this President.

Amazing.

Matti: in their eyes, he wasn’t “threatening” you, he was just trying to clear up your obviously socialist brainwashing. Something tells me that if you had pulled out a gun, you’d have been made the bad guy. I tell you, I don’t sit with my back to the door at most places any more, not because I’m afraid of some “thug” that might try to steal my fries, but because I want to make sure I can see the way out when some dummy pulls out his 45 because he doesn’t like the way some “suspicious” character is walking around.

In fact, we have no idea who actually wrote either The Old or New Testament. All we have is copies of copies and the actual authorship is completely unknown.

RF,

You’re right. Bullies always feel justified in their behavior — behavior they would not tolerate from somebody else! I too am more cautious now than ever, but generally do not carry a weapon with me. (The real reason there’s no gun in my car: Too many folks on I-285 NEED killin’… and they want me to do it or they wouldn’t be driving that way. And while I sympathize that they NEED killin’, I don’t want the responsibility, and well, the temptation would be too great!)

The current conservative members of the Supreme Court are nothing more than political hacks totally subservient to the Tea Party Republicans. I would not want such dubious characters to validate any of my core beliefs.

I don’t see why scout cannot bring himself to comment on those secret servit*rds and their improper behavior. After all, he’s so quick to jump on the bandwagon whenever he hears about the occupy crowd or anything birther, etc. And in this case, those guys are clearly guilty as sin. Probably even responsible for a bunch of little aborted ones to boot. Got wabbit.

The secret service should be smart enough not to get caught, that is what bothers me.

It is all about not getting caught. If Petrino had paid his babe the $20,000 is cash and gotten a well-placed alumni to give her a cushy job she wasn’t qualified for instead of giving her a job with the university he would still be the head football coach at the University of Arkansas. What is it about those folks from Arkansas that they can’t manage to not get caught.

“They’re not all as well-organized and controllable as they should be.”

I’m not talking about renegade militias. I’m talking about what the Constitution is talking about: well-regulated miltias. Since that is the justification for having the right to bear arm, I happen to think it should be a requirement as well. How can you have a “well-regulation militia” if the citizens who own guns aren’t a part of it?
