Defying international warnings, North Korea attempted to launch a multi-stage rocket Thursday that potentially would be capable of carrying a nuclear payload into space.
Being North Korea, its effort proved a dismal failure, with the rocket falling apart shortly after launch. However, that doesn’t mean that its ambitions can be safely ignored or downplayed. The U.N. Security Council will be taking up the issue today, and the Obama administration has indicated that a program to deliver food aid to North Korean citizens would be abandoned in response to the provocation.
Mitt Romney, however, immediately condemned the launch attempt as a sign of failure by the Obama administration.
“Instead of approaching Pyongyang from a position of strength, President Obama sought to appease the regime with a food-aid deal that proved to be as naive as it was short-lived,” Romney said. “This incompetence from the Obama administration has emboldened the North Korean regime and undermined the security of the United States and our allies.”
Now, if you want to dissect this problem in partisan terms, we could certainly do that. We could note that the United States first detected the North Korea nuclear program way back in 1989. That would have been early in the administration of the senior President Bush, who did little or nothing in response. In fact, by the end of his term he had pulled all U.S. nuclear warheads out of the Korean Peninsula.
In 2002 — under the second President Bush — North Korea publicly admitted its nuclear program, booted international inspectors from the country and restarted nuclear facilities that had been closed as part of a deal with the Clinton administration.
In 2003, North Korea announced its withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. In 2004 it announced it had built a bomb. And in 2006, it conducted its first test of a nuclear weapon.
In other words, most of the major advances made in the North Korean nuclear program have come with Republicans in the White House. Perhaps they too should have “approached Pyongyang from a position of strength” to solve this problem?
In reality, such a partisan analysis would be deeply foolish. I am not attempting in any way to argue that North Korea’s nuclear program represents a failure of Republican policy or Republican presidents. North Korea poses an extremely difficult challenge that has befuddled presidents of both parties going all the way back to Harry Truman. When a country has nothing and wants nothing, there are very few tools available to influence its behavior.
But I will admit to being curious. He has attempted to set up a dichotomy between “strength” on one hand vs. “appeasement” on the other. But what exactly would Romney do as president?
Would he take military action and provoke what by all accounts would be an extremely bloody war in Korea? Would he try to enlist the help of, say, the Russians? You know, the country that Romney recently denounced as “our number one geopolitical foe,” earning him a rebuke from the Russian president that “now is not the mid-70s”?
Would the Chinese — whom Romney has also harshly criticized — be equally willing to help him out? I rather doubt it.
I do know that I am leery of politicians whose first instinct is to bluster about using “strength” to solve international problems that might better be approached through wisdom, patience or cooperation. Been there, done that, and it didn’t turn out so well.
Based on Romney’s public statements, under his leadership we would still have troops in Iraq, despite Iraq’s insistence that they would not allow them. We would still be plotting how to extend rather than end our presence in Afghanistan. And you may remember that after an American drone crashed in Iran last year, Romney insisted that he would have sent troops into that nation to reclaim it, regardless of the consequences.
It’s also important to note that Romney has assembled a Cheney-esque foreign-policy team that is dominated by the same group of neoconservatives that led President Bush into the miscalculated invasion of Iraq.
By his second term, a chastened Bush had learned enough to discard many of those folks and ignore the rest, but by then the damage had been done, both to this country and to his presidency. By recruiting that crowd to his team, and by his evident willingness to follow their advice, Romney shows no such learning curve.
So I’m curious, and the American people ought to be curious as well: What exactly does “approaching Pyongyang from a position of strength” really mean? How would that approach play out, and what would its consequences be? Over the next six-plus months, maybe we’ll get an answer.

Before this paragraph you conveniently left out the Clinton years. While true Clinton tried to make progress on North Korea, when Bush took office he was under the impression that the North Koreans were not genuine in their discussions and were secretly constructing nuclear weapons beyond what they showed the inspectors. Defying the advice of his then Secretary of State Colin Powell, he withdrew from negotiations and imposed sanctions on the regime. Bush was right. During the Clinton negotiations the North Koreans had been constructing nuclear weapons actively. Know where I found this out? Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC yesterday. So maybe you want to rethink your major advances theory there Jay.

The Deflectocrat party must use every oportunity to change the subject. I believe it was the former worst president in the history of the U.S., one James Earl, Run from the Rabid Rabbit, Lust in his Heart, Kruschev Lied to Me, Carter that helped the North Koreans develop nucleur power, while Bill, I never had sex with that woman, Clinton traded misssile technology with China in return for campaign contributions. What we have in Korea is the end result of years of Socialist, Marxisim economic policy of starvation and ignorance so bad they can’t even get a rocket to work right. Many on the whining moocher left would like to see our economy resemble any world reknown failure. Our president’s naive response to Korea’s negligible threat is to threaten the people with further starvation

Your post indicates you are not familiar with the circumstances but have been relying on secondhand accounts.
To those of us who lived pre-SUV, pre-minivan, pre-conversion vans, station wagons were it. Given the number of dogs I’ve seen riding around in even more open conditions, especially in the South and West, in the beds of pickup trucks, the outrage is almost comical.
Of course, we now live in times where pets are not animals. They are not pets. They are family members, in many households treated better than kids, so I can see how this was such an effective platform for Democrats.
One of the hallmarks of a successfully managed contrived outrage scenario is to get people to think it really is about civility and decency and all that stuff.
And please notice in all this I’m not defending, condoning or anything of the sort. I’m simply saying it’s overblown.

Before this paragraph you conveniently left out the Clinton years.
Oh my freaking god!!!!!! Before you finished reading, you convienently overlooked this statement: “In reality, such a partisan analysis would be deeply foolish. I am not attempting in any way to argue that North Korea’s nuclear program represents a failure of Republican policy or Republican presidents.”
Jay’s telling you that making a partisaned analysis would be deeply foolish. And what do you do??? Make a partisaned analysis of Jay’s self-acknowledged display of foolish analysis. Damn, if that ain’t the most foolish sh*t ever…..

I realized that, but then why does Jay only bring up only anti-Republican talking points? I guess he gets paid by the word? Because if not, then the entire beginning of his post is pointless.

Why is Romney now tackling his gap with women voters instead of doing it the last 12 months when he was building it up to double figures. Why is Ann Romney the only woman he can pull off the bench to “humanize” him. Has there been any other woman that has met with Romney 32 times plus or minus on any subject matter? If so is she his spokesman on these matters? Haven’t seen her upfront and center on this. Romney puts a man ,his son, on the television to defend the one woman in the campaign. Obama is drowning in women, any given time he has one in a meeting doing responsible things, even his wife is brilliant, who is raising two, what else could they be, girls. I truly don’t think he does it for window dressing, the man respects women by nature. There would never be an all men choir representing women in his review. And look how Rush treated the one woman who showed up for the hearing uninvited by Republicans. Lets talk about Rush some more, lest we forget what we are working with here.

You can catch them out of Huston but then you have to fly to Moscow and lay over. Best flying to L.A. and connecting there. Either route the service is great.

I can see disagreeing when one has considered all the circumstances. It appears to me you’re still relying on accounts from the outraged ignorants. We all do at some time or another, but I think it good to try to catch it before it gets too far, then to use that new data to reassess our position.
“There is a vast difference between a dog riding in the back of a pickup truck (who has probably been doing that since a pup) and a dog being placed in a box on top of a car hurtling down the expressway with no wind break”
According to snopes.com, the people who track down the ‘is this true?” stuff, Romney did in fact personally construct a windshield for the carrier. That runs counter to the assertion of callous disregard so many have portrayed. It also puts him on a much different level then pickup owners, car owners who let their dogs hang out windows, and even some motorcycle riders with sidecars or saddlebags I’ve seen.
Again, to me the main point is to get all the facts, not the assertions of those who have a stake in the outcome, then use that to assess the real import of the event.

Gracious Joseph-we have been talking about it but I imagine North Korea rockets have priority over Ann’s hurt feelings.
If she is still upset, ask her to call me and we can go get a pedi/mani and then go shopping at Neimans. You are manufacturing the outrage and cons are trying to still walk back from the WAR ON WOMEN. Ann is just a collateral figure and I’m sure she has moved on as well.

I thought he did that to show how foolish partisaned analysis would be. If he brought up both parties, then the analysis would NOT be partisaned, and therefore his point would be moot. Correct? What really concerns me is that you acknowledge that partisaned analysis is foolish, yet you double down on it.

I would have so much more respect for Romney if he acknowledged North Korea’s pattern of doing this nonsense regardless of whether we have a Republican or Democrat administration and then describe what he would do differently as an effort to break the pattern. I would then perceive him as a knowledgeable, thoughful leader. Instead, stating that it must be Obama’s fault that this happened either shows that he is an ignorant fool or that he has yet to transition from the primaries to the general election. Saying every troubling thing must be Obama’s fault and/or throwing out the same neocon code words is not leadership and is not going to work on independents.

I do agree with the dog’s apparent reaction. The same occurs when dogs are transported by airplane. The lack of controls regarding that used to be appalling. So I guess the lesson for politicians with family pets is, if you’re going away for an extended period, kennel it. Then again,, my vet has told me of the same effects that happen with kenneling over 5 days or so and recommends several long-term care kennels. Which are a lot more expensive. So there’s a lot of tough choices for pet owners, even when they think what they’re doing is okay for the pet.

1. Los Angeles to Singapore, Singapore Airlines

ATL-DXB isn’t that bad of a flight when compared to those. Even ATL-TLV (Atlanta to Tel Aviv) was longer than the Dubai flight.
