Tailgunner Al West: ‘There’s Commies in the House’

Tailgunner Al West, in response to an audience question:

“I believe there’s about 78 to 81 members of the Democrat Party that are members of the Communist Party.”

There are many things to love about that statement, but my favorite is West’s use of specific rather than rounded figures — “78 to 81″ — in his alleged count, just to give it the ring of authenticity.

The bad news is, this fool was once entrusted to lead U.S. troops into combat. The good news is, the Army caught on and eventually forced him into retirement.

The even worse news is, in the modern Republican Party people such as West are elevated to the status of heros and statesmen. Herman Cain, Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, among others, have even advocated that West be selected as the party’s vice presidential nominee and West, humble man that he is, has said that if asked he would probably accept.

I have a list of reasons — 78 to 81 of them in fact — for why that would be a very bad idea.

Yes, he was given a very serious blemish on his military record – an Article 15 – and was fined $5,000. I have not read about his circumstances of being discharged, but according to Jay he was forced into retirement.

It would seem at a minimum that he was an embarrassment to the United States Army…

Its absolutely has already gone into effect. It is the law.

The first part which says you can’t be refused insurance because of a pre-existing condition became effective June 21 2011 The second part becomes effective September 21 2011. That part allows dependent children to remain on a parents plan until they are 26 and prevents insurance companies from canceling your policy if you get sick.

Apparently, teachers were supposed to “comport themselves as ambassadors of Christianity” and “conduct their lives in a Christ-centered fashion.” One could argue that carrying the child would be an act in fulfillment of that idea.

It almost looks as if she’d have kept her job if she had concealed her pregnancy and had an abortion, though I suspect that’s not what school administrators would have had in mind.

Just FYI, West was forced to retire from the Army as a result of his failure to follow orders. Had he not had 18 years of service or more, he’d have been kicked out, decorated war veteran or not.

The only thing I will say about the biological argument is that if you are to define life at all in a biological context the way you have, then every human being constitutes life, and that life began whenever human DNA first came into existence. Since then, all human DNA has been alive, from before the moment of conception, for everyone, until it no longer grows all the new cells needed for organs and sustaining those organs. In such a case, there appears to be no reason to apply a moral argument at all. All of us are exactly as old as the earliest strand of human DNA.

COL (LTC actually) West apparently was given an Article 15 (non-judicial punishment) and fined $5000 for an act that any responsible Commander should have known was inappropriate.

If he actually thought he was right he, should have demanded a court martial (judicial punishment trail) and not voluntarily resigned.

So he either knew he was wrong and took the easy way out or he doesn’t have the character to defend his actions.

The country doesn’t need him as a Vice Presidential candidate.

BTW, I have served since Vietnam in hostile areas, including Iraq and Afghanistan and I’m no hero. He isn’t either, unless he can produce the awards (BS w/V, SS, or higher)

To me, you only recognize one person’s interest during pregnancy, the mother’s, and you make no concession that the fetus has its own interests, interests which many people like me believe are worthy of acknowledgement and legal protection.

I know he did. That’s why he was allowed to retire. As I said, if he hadn’t had at least 18 years in, he’d have been kicked out or at least received REFRAD (Relieved From Active Duty).

It’s hard to see how any sane, sensible person could oppose these goals. Nevertheless, Republican politicians and their electorate seem determined to fight against this at all costs. I’m saying that LTC West had to accept the consequences for his violation of orders, regardless of the results he got. He COULD have demanded a General Court-Martial and presented evidence to defend himself at trial. He chose not to do that, and submitted to the judgment of his CO.

LTC West violated orders pertaining to the treatment, handling and interrogation of suspected insurgents. He roughed up a suspect and fired a weapon next to the guy’s head (not to kill him, just to scare him) despite the fact that such conduct was explicitly forbidden by the ROE and theater commander’s direct orders. My understanding is that the suspect was never found to have engaged in actual insurgent activity; that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and looked suspicious.

West received nonjudicial punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice and was forced to retire some months later.

I do not believe the issue is whether or not LtCol West refused an order.

He accepted an Article 15. Briefly, an Article 15 falls under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. It’s a form of non-judicial punishment. Someone does something apparently wrong, there’s an investigation and the commander can decide, if the charges are serious enough, to not go the court martial route (judicial punishment) and offer an Article 15 (administrative punishment – avoids the courts). The person charged has the option of accepting or refusing the Article 15. If the person refuses, it goes to a court martial. A conviction there is a federal conviction. It’s risky. There’s a tendency to pile on a lot of specifications so even if one beats the big charges, one will have a record from conviction of a lesser charge.

The person can accept the Article 15. There’s a range of punishment that can be given. It can be suspended, or it can result (depending on the grade of the person and the commander) in loss of rank, pay and can include confinement. Person doesn’t know ahead of time what the commander will impose.

Hope this was what you were referring to.

Actually, it comes from several right-wing sites, but there’s good reason to believe it.

West received his punishment at the end of 2003. He retired in mid-2004. It takes 3-4 months to process military retirement paperwork, so West had to have applied for retirement shortly after his disciplinary proceedings were complete.

It’s important to bear in mind that no LTC with a recent UCMJ action against him is going to get a promotion or even a decent billet. West stood to end up in a crap duty station with a crap work assignment, because no brigade or division commander would want him working for them.

You can claim that West wasn’t forced to retire, but the fact of the matter is that West’s career was *over,* even if he had fought to stay in uniform. And he didn’t fight for a court-martial, so why would he have fought to stay in the Army?

No, the simple “stradegy” is that you can tell that tale time and time again and not once have you mentioned that the world’s economies all had a collective bowel movement which pushed the demand for gas down worldwide. Gas is priced as it is now because it is a G-L-O-B-A-L commodity now and not just produced for domestic consumption.

Adam Smith’s invisible hand is giving America a very visible hand job. It has nothing to do with Obama, Bush, or even Cheney/Haliburton. It’s basic supply vs demand. When global supply of end use gasoline far exceeds global demand, the price will drop. However, since refining capacity will never cause that to happen, the price will not drop much anytime in the near future without some event that drastically curbs demand, such as a global recession.

The DA has no requirement to use the grand jury if she feels an indictment is warranted so long as capital charges are not levied. I can’t see any benefit if that is what she feels. Could she be worried about not getting an indictment? Of course, but that is a rare occurance and the assumption that that is the reason requires either bias or mind reading abillities.

I didn’t read it that way. NBC references Sen Hatch’s assertion of what the Obama reelection team would to at a future point. That’s not trashing Mormonism.

If all they do is build straw men, yes I will mention that. If, however, they actually present an argument that is mostly true, such as highlighting some of Mitt’s flip flops, you won’t hear me saying they are attacking a straw man. It is unlikely you will find me nitpicking every nuance in a SuperPAC ad, right or left.

The Dem SuperPAC ads are definitely going to be different than the R SuperPAC ads, because the R ads seem to be based on a few specific attacks, mostly aimed at straw man Obama, some aimed at gas prices. The D SuperPAC ads are likely to consist mostly of the flip flops of Romney, and his support of the Ryan plan. If they run an anti-Mormon ad I am definitely going to renounce that. It will be completely uncalled for, if done.

I’m sorry but that’s just plain stupid. Gas prices were below $2 throughout the late nineties and early 2000’s. What regulations were in place for nearly 10 years that suddenly caused gas prices to spike or what regulations did Bush enact to cause them to rise if they weren’t there already? And as for opening up more areas to drill, it takes years for that to come on line. That explanation is preposterous especially since there is a simple free market solution staring you in the face.

I stand corrected with respect to LTC West’s Valorous Unit Award; it’s the equivalent of awarding the unit (not the individuals in the unit) a Silver Star. There is no Army unit award equivalent to the Bronze Star.

Your first statement is a mouthfull. What is your excuse for hammering Obama over something that you probably defended Bush about? My statement about global supply and demand is not an excuse. That IS how the market works. What you and others are suggesting is that Obama, by doing nothing, is a better free-market president than Bush was who got involved in the market. Am I correct or wrong?

I’ve heard nothing but market this… market that… over the past decade or so. When the market works in favor of America, there’s nothing wrong in the world. When the market bites America in the ass, then somebody’s gotta do something. You can’t have it both ways. Either you want market interference or you don’t.

Things were much easier before everything went global. American businesses opened pandora’s box when they decided to start outsourcing jobs back in the 70’s and 80’s. Nobody thought to look long term for problems that would arise 40-50 years down the road. We made this bed, so now we must lie in it.

The alleged plot reportedly involved Yahya Jhodri Hamoodi, a civilian Iraqi police officer. West, who was not responsible for conducting interrogations in Iraq and had never conducted nor witnessed one, had his men detain Hamoodi. In the process of detaining Mr. Hamoodi, soldiers testified that Hamoodi appeared to reach for his weapon and needed to be subdued. Hamoodi was beaten by four soldiers from the 220th Field Artillery Battalion on the head and body. West then fired his pistol near Hamoodi’s head, after which Hamoodi provided West with names and information, which Hamoodi later described as “meaningless information induced by fear and pain.” At least one of these suspects was arrested as a result, but no plans for attacks or weapons were found. West said “At the time I had to base my decision on the intelligence I received. It’s possible that I was wrong about Mr. Hamoodi.”

BTW, West was never awarded a Combat Infantryman’s Badge. As an Artillery officer, he wouldn’t have been eligible for it. And that’s not dissing the man, it’s simply a statement of fact.
