Travelin’ that last mile to St. Peter’s gate

American music — not country music, not bluegrass music, but American music — lost a giant this week in the passing of banjo great Earl Scruggs. His style was as authentic as North Carolina moonshine, and it packed just as much wallop.

The video below gives you a nice peek at the three-fingered picking style that Scruggs made famous, but it also highlights the trait found in almost every song he plays. The man may crack just the barest hint of a smile, but his playing reveals a great sense of humor. He sets up the story beautifully, leading you to think you know what’s coming and then wham, here comes the punchline and he takes you in another direction entirely. It brings a smile to my face every time I hear it.

Rest in peace, Mr. Scruggs, and thank you.

Wow! We agree on something! Earl Scruggs was an original, for sure, and his innovation affected many. I hope his family finds peace. Even though he made it to 88, it is tough to lose someone, especially a parent.

Growing up in the South was something, Jay, for among other things, we had the Wilborn Brothers (with Loretta Lynn), Porter Wagoner (with Dolly Parton), and, of course, Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys (with special guests), in back-to-back programs every Saturday afternoon. What a music education it was.

But here’s a video I’ve been watching off and on for several years now of Earl with the great Chieftains doing “Sally Goodin’.” Somehow it seems to get even better every time I watch it, especially now!

The red pill promises ‘the truth and nothing more.’ Neo takes the red pill and awakes to reality – something utterly different from anything Neo, or the audience, could have expected. What Neo had assumed to be reality turned out to be only a collective illusion, fabricated by the Matrix and fed to a population that is asleep, cocooned in grotesque embryonic pods. Haven’t seen you on here for a couple of days. This is a follow up to your question from the other night.

Do you support this quote ?

“If in the opinion of the People, the distribution or modification of the Constitutional powers be in any particular wrong, let it be corrected by an amendment in the way which the Constitution designates. But let there be no change by usurpation; for though this, in one instance, may be the instrument of GOOD (emphasis added), it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed.”

O.K. The quote is by George Washington and it basically means this:

There is a process to change the Constitution. It’s called an amendment.
To make the Constitution say something it doesn’t (even for a good purpose) is to
usurp it and by doing that you cheapen it and make it easier for despots to ignore it
in the future.

Good ………. then you agree with Washington that to change it by usurpation is a danger to free governments.

“usurpation: “an act of usurping; wrongful or illegal encroachment, infringement, or seizure.”

Unfortunately, various Suprem Courts (conservative and liberal) have failed in this regard throughout our history and each time they do so the Constitution is weakened.

Banjo story. In the small country town that I grew up in, they would occasionally have a talent show at the grade school. This guy, Horace Green, would come with his very worn banjo. He could play one song, or about 8 measures of one song. He would sit up there and play and play and play. The same 8 measures until they came and got him. He wasn’t bad, but he needed some diversity in his act.

Well, I’m mighty proud of Bookman for paying tribute to Earl Scruggs. It’s kinda hard to beleive that before him, everybody played the banjo like they would play a rhythm guitar. Nobody even thought of picking the notes with their fingers. I hope when he gets to St. Peter’s gate he finds Bill Monroe and Lester Flatt waiting for him and all tuned up and they’re all ready to go perform for the Big Guy. And I’m pretty sure all the feuds they had here on earth will be just so much history. Nobody fights or hates in Heaven. Have a good night everybody. And pray for me so I can weave my way home from Billy Bob’s without getting pulled over.

70 years ago today Rickenbacker Field became Dobbins ARB. It was named in honor of Captain Charles M. Dobbins, a World War II C-47 pilot who died near Sicily. It serves as the home station of the 94th Airlift Wing and its fleet of Hercules C-130 aircraft, and is the headquarters for Twenty-Second Air Force. It is also home to the Army Aviation Service Facility #2 (AASF#2), the Georgia Army National Guard and their fleet of UH-60 Blackhawks. Dobbins is also home to Marine and Navy Reserve units.

For Bruno,

Box Scaggs and Sky Dog…

In 1970 at Queens College’s radio station WQMC in New York, Duane Allman talked about how he first picked up the slide. It was late 1967 and his group Hourglass was between albums: “I heard Ry Cooder playing some time ago and I said, man, that’s for me. I got me a bottle and went in the house for about three weeks and I said, ‘Hey man, we’ve got to learn some songs . . . I love this . . .’ So we started doing it and for awhile it was everybody looking at me and thinking, ‘Oh no! He’s getting ready to do it again!’ Everybody just lowered their heads . . . But then I got a little better at it and improved it . . .”

Improved it, he did. The fury that could be unleashed or the sweetness that could be set free when he slipped a Coricidin pill bottle on the ring finger of his right hand to slide along his guitar’s fret board defined an approach to playing whose influence has been keenly felt. From the basic “Dust My Broom” and accenting slides of Elmore James and Muddy Waters, to the inroads made by Earl Hooker, it was finally Allman who established the electric slide as a melodic force. It was his sense of melody, combined with western swing influenced dual guitar harmonies resting on ensemble-like modal jazz underpinnings that distinguished the Allman Brothers Band above the usual blues boogie outfits of the early ’70s.

TV news reported that demonstrations will continue in Florida for “justice for Trayvon”. This is good and proper. However, as Ervin Jefferson’s family grieves and plans his funeral, all you hear from the black community is thundering silence. A teenage black man, unarmed, is gunned down by a security guard. The guard is taken into custody and later released without being charged. The guard claims he “feared for his life”. So similar. No one else here seem to be bothered by this. Something is terribly wrong here.

Relax about the gas prices already. Ain’t a thing you can control. It’s just the free market at its best. Supply and demand. The USA is not the only customer in the market and besides we export more oil now than we import. Got a beef with oil? Complain to the oil companies for exporting oil for personal profit….or learn to adapt and drive less…

I read that article. Many people don’t understand the basis for this law. Without it the onus of responsibility rests on the defender to prove that they couldn’t escape from the attacker and therefore had no choice but to use deadly force.

Is there any doubt where these self sidelined neocons get their collective chickenhawk claptrap from? Guys like this little fella…

Rep. Joe Walsh Calls Veterans Protesting Wall Street Un-American

At a November 19 town hall meeting in Gurnee, Illinois, Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) smeared Occupy Wall Street protesters as “generally spoiled, pampered, unfocused, clueless young people and a smattering of other people who don’t understand this country and are advocating anti-American solutions.” When asked by a subsequent questioner if his attack applied to “veterans who fought in foreign wars” who are part of the 99 Percent Movement, Walsh replied that they were advocating “socialist solutions” and that “they don’t understand this country.” Walsh later admitted that he’d never actually been to any of the protests.

Just one of innumerable reasons why this horrificly messed up GOP needs to be sent back to the Stone Age where they belong.

There are two possibilities:

1. Come November the people, realizing what a mistake it was to elect morons like this, will boot them all out.

2. America has dumbed down to the point where idiots like this will become the norm in the House and Senate and those of us with intelligence will just have to put up with it.

In Florida the way the law stands now if the defendant claims he acted in self defense, the prosecutor has to proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the dead man did not attack the killer.

Without that law, the defendant would have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he was attacked.

Either way with no witnesses it’s a pretty high standard to prove. Prosecutor, and if it goes to trial, basically have to decide what a resoable man would have done.

Congressman represent the views of the majority of the voters in their districts. Unless the voter’s views change, they will keep re-electing the same person. That’s why there is so little turnover in Congress. If there were term limits, the same voters would just elect someone else with the same views.

Only way for change to occur is for the opinions and beliefs of the voters to change. That happens. When it does it generally happens quickly in one election. FDR in 1932. The GOP revolution in 1994. The south changed to GOP in 1964 with Goldwater. Other than that, changes occur slowly.
