The Gingrich political career, now at an end

newtgingrich_AP120121164939_620x350

“A lot of us who were around him before and didn’t think this was a good idea from the beginning were worried this was the way it was going to end. He’s in danger, I think, of becoming a laughingstock.”

– Rich Galen, former staff member for Newt Gingrich, quoted in Politico

The sense of personal destiny that has driven Newt Gingrich throughout his life, the deep and defining belief that he was fated to do great things and write his name in large letters upon the history books, has finally run aground on the sharp shoals of reality. And that is a hard thing for the former speaker and Georgia congressman to accept.

He has no money and in fact his campaign is deeply in debt. He lacks the resources to travel, let alone buy campaign ads, and the press has abandoned him, raising the age-old question: If a man utters pearls of profound wisdom, and no one is there to hear him, did he really utter them at all? Yet still he presses on, insistent against all evidence that he remains relevant. As he told Fox this week, “I have no incentive to get out because I have a set of ideas that include $2.50-a-gallon gas, etc. So I have every incentive to stay in.”

I’m sorry: “$2.50-a-gallon gas” is not an idea, it is an ill-disguised pander inconsistent with reality. Newt’s inability to distinguish between an idea and a pander betrays a lot about how he thinks, and about why he has fallen so short of his dreams.

To give the man his due, Gingrich has fashioned a political career that by most standards would be considered a huge success. He truly did shock the political world when he led a Republican revolution in 1994 that ended the Democrats’ death grip on the House of Representatives. He was enormously gifted, possessed with a clever mind and one of the sharpest tongues in American political history. And his strong sense of personal destiny insulated him against doubts that might have haunted other men.

But a clever mind is not a wise mind. A man so easily distracted by shiny intellectual objects, flitting from one idea to the next, can never attain the depth suggested by the most prominent words in the Gingrich vocabulary, such as “profound” and “fundamental.” And those who are equipped to lead heady revolutions are almost never equipped for the day-to-day drudgery required to govern and to build.

However, the fatal flaw that ensured that Gingrich would never satisfy the ambition that burned within him was his basic lack of respect for other people. The contempt that he showered upon opponents in public life was reflected in his private life as well, and also in how he treated colleagues and staff. He showed little loyalty and earned little loyalty, and in politics as in life, that makes long-term success very difficult.

Was this comment made ten years ago? If not, it’s way too late.
In any case, if Newt & Callista want to go looking for greener pastures, I hope they remember they’re Catholics now, and will need an annulment from the Pope. And I fear Newt is too broke to buy one.

RB: Who is going to pay the insurance premiums for all these poor people who are required to buy them under Obama’s plan?

“The same people that pay for Medicaid now. Or didn’t you know Medicaid was a poor person medical program?”

Adam,

I was watching a discussion on the news the other night about Obamacare. Its no secret that in Obamacare that millions of people would be moved to the Medicaid rolls. What you have to understand is that the states can’t afford it. On average medicaid eats up 22% of state budgets and to put millions more on medicaid won’t work. The states simply do not have the money for it.

“Incidental to your question – guy from Heritage who came up with individual mandate was on Fox yesterday at lunchtime. Said they’d abandoned the idea and now favor…. are you ready for this? Subsidies!”

The problem underlying the idea of a mandate is indisputable: there are a considerable number of people who are unwilling to buy health insurance if they are young and healthy. And that is disastrous to the health insurance industry and to all of the rest of us. So I think it is obvious people need to be compelled to buy insurance. But how to do it? I am thinking that if you remove the “safety net” introduced in the Reagan era (of being treated at an ER no matter what) and spend time and money impressing upon people that they will NOT receive medical care without insurance, then that might work. Those who still elect not to obtain insurance will have pay out of their own pockets (an some clearly can). Of course, this means that insurance will also have to be affordable for all. But I am confident this could be accomplished as well.

The police video of Zimmerman doesn’t prove anything. The report is that para-medics cleaned him up at the scene and this video was taken one hour later. When this story first broke 73% believed this young man was killed in cold blood I was among those who thought Zimmerman probably stepped beyond the law. Now only 48% believe Travon Martin was shot in cold blood. The media’s rush to judgment and Sharpton, Jackson et al stirring up emotions along with so many on the left jumping to the conclusion about Zimmerman’s guilt not to mention this black panther idiot have turned people off. Additionally the facts that have now come out disproving the original media reports describing Martin as an innocent angel. I don’t know about Zimmerman’s guilt or innocence but people should chill and await completion of the investigation.

RB, again you try to put words in my mouth that I did not say and you fail to make an intelligent statement as I predicted. There is no dispute that Zimmerman did kill an innocent child. He is guilty of that by his OWN admission. The only dispute is whether it was justified under the FL Stand Your Ground law and if it excuses his killing of a child who did nothing wrong other than, if the claims most favorable to Zimmerman are accepted–and they do not seem to hold up–defend himself against an unknown stranger pursuing him. That is a matter for the jury to determine.

IF the Fed gov’t can mandate that a citizen purchase a product from a private company, then you can’t HONESTLY say that from now UNTIL the end of time they won’t/can’t do it again with another product.

My answer of Nothing and none is just as good as anyone else’s claim that it means the government will force people to buy brocolli, when it comes to proving what will happen in the future. – In other words, they as well as YOU do not know what the gov’t will do in the future. So, that means you can’t HONESTLY say in response to the question “what else can/will the gov’t mandate a pvt citizen to purchase”, “Nothing and none” because you DON’T KNOW. Inciting others to violence is wrong, period. And often criminal. What Lee did is scary, because he is a celebrity with a much wider audience – thereby, I would think, increasing the likelihood that a totally innocent couple might have been seriously harmed. He not only was attempting to indirectly incite violence, he was unwittingly doing it against the wrong people. Dang…that is scary. I guess I had better not tick off Sean Penn.

Paul,

Hard to speculate on what a McCain presidency would have been like. I consider him to be a rino considering the presidential debates. Its a hypothetical that is kind of useless to pursue except that I things would be much better. We would be drilling more, the regulatory environment would not be so anti-business, and I’ve a feeling we wouldn’t be anywhere near the shocking debt levels we are at now.

Exactly what do you propose to do to penalize the speculators knowing this bit of history?

Well, obviously, we should let them get away with that kind of behavior, simply because they always try to get away with it. Why bother?

We know who was stalking whom, we know who pulled the trigger, we “know” the lead investigator felt he had cause to arrest… We know Zimmerman was a Democrat…

That last one right there should be enough for most of the wingnuts here to make an arrest. I’m sure if Zim had used a knife not a gun, the wingnuts would be screaming for his head. But he used his holstered penis extension, so not-so-much…

The boy’s body? What shape were his hands in? If you’re beating somebody to death, there has to be physical evidence. We have plenty of corraborating evidence against Zimmerman, but just his word of mouth the other way. Show me some physical evidence that the boy was beating Zim to death and I’ll shutup…

Jay -
‘The Gingrich political career, now at an end’?

should have had a question mark.

He can run for governor of Va. or Ga. (if he relocates to his popularity center).

He can be chosen as a running mate for Mitt.

His running for nationwide office is probably at an end (THANK THE LORD).

But never say never about the Nutster.

“And you want them because you’re too lazy to voate your idiots out.”

I guess some precedents are more equal than others, huh? The president is term limited, so it is not as if term limits are a pie-in-the-sky concept. I bet liberals who oppose them would not wish to argue that someone like Byrd, who served in office into his 90s, should probably not have stayed that long. I guess in that case, some term limits are more equal than others.

Doggone – Sometimes I have to decide which idiot is better than the other idiot as in the case of Oblama vs Mac. I vote in EVERY election. So if you are voting an idiot back in you are lazy? Are you lazy?

Keep. You keep claiming Martin is innocent. If you have evidence to support that, get off this blog and call the Sanford police. If not, maybe you should give it a rest.

And to say Z has agreed he killed an innocent child is an outright lie.

Whatever McCain may not be in people’s eyes, he was certainly a fiscal conservative and has the record to prove it.

Bwahahahahahaha….

McSame would’ve continued W’s fiscal policies just like Obama has, Florida STILL would’ve been resistant to offshore drilling.

Can you give us a single solitary example of a “job killing” regulation Obama has enacted?

What say ye to the GA legislature raising the unemployment insurance tax on us “job creators” (small businesses)?

I have not read or heard that. But I have read that he has been very remorseful and depressed. However this turns out, Trayvon should not have lost his life. And he wouldn’t have if Zimmerman hadn’t followed him against the directive of the dispatcher. He made an awful decision and now must live with the awful consequences.

Newt story…
In 1997 my fiance and I had our rehersal dinner at a restaurant near Town Center Mall. We were suprised to see Newt and his entourage (pre-calista) traipse in and be seated 2 tables away from us. Back then there were still smoking areas in restaurants, but we were not seated in the smoking area or anywhere near it. That didn’t stop Newts mom and a couple others from firing up however, and our complaints were no avail… Egotistical, arrogant, and above the law… (or in this case the establishments rules) That’s your Newt.

Yes…on the theory that people are “lazy”. So, to be logically consistent, how does that theory apply to other political issues or policies – say, an insurance mandate?
