On a smarter planet, Augusta membership wouldn’t be an issue

For a decade now, IBM has been one of three main sponsors for broadcasts of the Masters golf tournament, which begins a week from today. IBM technology helps to run the tournament; IBM hosts a hospitality cabin near the 10th hole for its clients and guests.

Reflecting that long and close relationship, the last four IBM CEOs have been invited to become members of Augusta National, a highly sought honor. (The Washington Post puts the number at the last eight.)

Last October, however, IBM CEO Sam Palmisano announced he was stepping down and named as his replacement a 53-year-old by the name of Ginni Rometty to replace him.

That would be Ginni, as in Virginia. And as we all know, Augusta National has yet to welcome a woman to don its exalted green jacket (it welcomed its first black member in 1990).

Ten years ago, when Martha Burk tried to strong-arm the club into inviting a woman to join its exclusive membership, club leaders resisted, insisting that any changes in its membership policy would be made in its own time, without outside pressure. Rometti’s ascension to the head of IBM offers Augusta National a natural, organic opportunity to take that step, a step that it should have taken sometime in the previous century.

Conversely, refusing to take that natural step with a corporate ally as prominent as IBM, with a candidate such as Rometti who has earned the perks that traditionally come with her job, would make the absence of women all the more glaring.

Some things are sacred that should not yield to PC. If the members want to admit a woman, fine, it’s their club. If not, everyone should leave them the hell alone. If they say no, I am sure they will be prepared should IBM withdraw their sponsorship.

But it’s not a “PC” issue…it’s an issue of the tradition of the club. They now have 2 conficting traditions. The question is: which will they consider more important?

Who cares what the Masters people do, the thing that concerns me is how do we get Obama out of office so we can get back making America great again! These are possibly the 5 best sentences you’ll ever read and all applicable to bringing America back!

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation!

“You look at the approach that was taken to build this bill, they brought every single interest group into the White House and gave them something in return for something else. The individual mandate is what the insurance companies got and I think it was a terrible mistake. Hopefully it will not destroy — losing the individual mandate will not destroy the whole bill because the bill has got some very good stuff in it and a lot of Americans are going to be very sorry if this falls through,” the former presidential candidate said.

However, you can legislate the poor to remain there all the while accumulating more wealth for the wealthy.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

Tell that to a hedge fund manager. I guess you also have no problem with the military and national security apparatus keeping you safe from suicide bombers.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

Wrong. You can get released from jail, thereby gaining your freedom without anything being taken from someone else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

Nope, but you damn sure can increase it by concentrating it into the hands of a few.

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation!

I have a friend who worked on a BBC shoot at Augusta last month. It was a doc with Jack Nicholas. Two members of the crew were women including the director. They needed to go to the restroom and their “handler” provided by Augusta National explained that they would have to leave the premises to answer the call of nature.
Further, when my pal apologized for their inconvenience, they said don’t worry the BBC shoots all over the world and strives to accommodate local customs. To cap it off the Brits requested that my friend leave during lunch to replace his jeans with a pair of dockers as they felt that might also be an affront in the environment they in which they found themselves.

Who the hell has the temerity to assume that anyone has the right to tell a private organization who they can admit? This sounds like Bozo, only with white guys. If they don’t want females in their organization, they have every right to not to ask them to join. If they don’t want gays, trans-gender individuals, people of color, Koreans, white guys, Jews, liberals, Elvis impersonators, Illinois governors, people from Nevada or Oregon, they have every right to do just that…. deny membership. I agree that this seems to be a perfect opportunity for Augusta National to admit its first female member. Billy Payne has shown that he is not afraid to change some of the long-time traditions. Martha Burk needs to keep her damn mouth shut about it, though. They worst thing she could do is to let the Augusta National believe…if they do extend a membership invitation to Ms. Rometty…that Ms. Burk is going to claim that she somehow “won the battle.”

And just for the record: Over one-third of the female organizations in the National Council of Women’s Organizations…that Ms. Burk was chairman of…did not allow men to join.

Who gives a crap about which rich people are allowed into the Masters? Most of us have to worry about 4 dollars a gallon gas, 5 dollars a gallon milk and 2 dollars a loaf bread. In two years nobody will remember who won the thing this year anyway and we will still be worrying about how we are going to make it. It is almost comical. While our country teeters on the financial and socialogical abyss, somebody writes about who is allowed into the Masters. No wonder “reality” TV has done so well.

Well, me and my buddy Jim Earl and my other buddy Joe Bill talk from time to time about playing Augusta National. We’d even be willing to wear our whitest T-shirts and our best blue jeans. Trouble is, we don’t even know anybody that’s a member. Maybe some member that’s reading this can write me c/o Simpsons Trailer Park, Cumming, GA and let me know how to go about getting on that course. It’s at least a 3-hr. drive to Augusta and I don’t want to waste the time if we ain’t going to be welcome.

And never let it be said I’m not for Equal Opportunity. I think Augusta National ought to make a special effort to hire some women to drive the beer carts and such. It would put golfers on their best behavior and keep them from hiding behind trees acting like we don’t know what they’re really doing when they’re too lazy to go to a bathroom.

But women golfers? Nope. A round already takes almost five hours on a course, and we don’t need a bunch of cake-bakers holding things up even more by taking about five shots to get to where most men hit their tee balls. When it comes to that I come down firmly on the side of Tradition and letting private clubs do what they want with their private property. Besides, if IBM had of did what a company with any sense should of done—name a man to run the place—we wouldn’t be writting about this problem.

Anyhow, that’s my opinion and it’s very true. Any of you Augusta National members can see my address and I’ll be glad to hear from you. And you can take my word for it that we ain’t going to pick some female to fill out the foursome. We got alot of respect for Tradition.

Have a good night everybody.

Why? So liberals can feel good that a woman is a member of Augusta National? How about they invite a woman when they want that person to be a member, just like they do everyone else. What difference would it make to have a woman member just because she was a woman? Liberals are so into appearances. Things do have to be true, they just have to look good.

I don’t know whether those members feel the same way in the locker room after a round of golf, smoking a cigar and having a wee dram of single malt but I feel that way every time I step on my flats boat to chase tarpon in the gulf. There are no complaints about the lack of a bathroom, no bitching about how hot it is, no one wanting to go home and “quit this silly pursuit”, no cries about “going home early”, or “this sun is pretty hot…. maybe we ought to head in”. or “you”re not going to have another beer are you?”….. none of that. Just the freedom to enjoy what you do, free of criticism, free of bitching and complaining and doing what you like best. I seriously doubt that most members of ANGC give much thought to the fact that the club is all male. And when they do, it’s probably about which lady is most deserving–and make no mistake, it will be a HUGE honor–to be the first lady invited for ANGC membership. A better blog might be about golfing reader’s nominations. I can think of several including Annika Sorenstam, Mickey Wright, or maybe Babe Didrickson Zaharias in memorium. Regardless, I suspect that because it will be such a huge media frenzy when it happens, and ANGC membership is nothing if not image-conscious, the honored lady will likely have made huge contributions to the game, as opposed to a business leader.

I have no doubt the members, all male, and majority WASP would be fine with not allowing Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, or anyone different from them. This club, and others like them have no place in American society

There was a golf magazine article a few years back about the arcane membership practices of Augusta National. It seems that the chairman has just about the sole authority to extend membership invitations. And membership isn’t necessarily permanent. For example, a member who dropped a bottle of after-shave lotion in the locker room never received a renewal billing, nor did the member who abused his privilege of inviting guests to play the course. You can be out of the club as quickly as you came in.

I know I’d never be comfortable within that circle, nor would I want to be a member of a golf club that closes down two weeks after the Masters and doesn’t re-open until fall. Membership invitations receive a lot of publicity when they’re extended, but I’m far from certain that they’re worth much except to those who value prestige and exclusivity.

Josef – good point and I only wish it was true. But what about those situations that place quotas on the numbers of minorities required to be, for example, accepted to colleges or employee ranks to qualify for federal funds – just two examples. Qualifications go out of the window when dealing with numbers.

I’m inalterably opposed to quotas…coming as I do from a background where quotas were used to limit that access. Here is where I can tangle with my fellow liberals big time. Quotas are simply not the way to go to broaden access. It’s a feel-good quick fix and once the quota is met, to hell with the more highly qualified minority member whose application came late. I’m not sure how to change the culture surrounding this, but mandates do leave a sour taste in the mouths of many.

One comment thought. Augusta is exampt as a private club because they invite on a personal basis, and they are not a commercial club where people meet to do business. That is the distinction between a pribate club that cna discrimate and a commerical club or trade union that cannont. If they issue the lady an invitation because she is CEO of IBM that kills there argument that they are not a commerical club with people there for business purposes.

And for the record, I’m opposed to legacy admissions and the good ol boy network as well. And I’ve had a couple of Asian kids tell me they felt they had to be head and shoulders above everybody to get into colleges, med schools, etc. But you will always have claims of bias one way or the other as long as there is an interview or some other subjective criteria. “See RB at 8:48…how DO you change that line of thought?”

Let’s look at a different scenario (about which I know a fair amount): basketball. Should the NBA have a quota for white players? I don’t think so. The reason 80 or more percent of the players are black are not hard to discern. You don’t have to be a track star to be a great basketball player; Larry Bird proved that. The reason black players are generally better is because they, out of a strong desire and interest, put in a whole lot more time becoming that way. Most players do not get great in a few years time (though there are examples of both white and black players doing this, but they were already exceptional athletes in a different sport like soccer). Time and effort.

What, in part, needs to change is values. For some or even many blacks, pursuing an education is “being white”. I learned that, of all places, from Travis Smiley. Such an attitude is self defeating. Conversely, I have read that white basketball players give up on the game for the opposite reason. Again, self defeating.

But that doesn’t mean it’s right to do so, and it certainly doesn’t mean that those of us who think such discrimination is wrong shouldn’t say so, especially since it comes in the wake of a history of (illegal) virulent discrimination against women and black people.

Yesterday, Palmetto Public Record exclusively reported that the Internal Revenue Service has been investigating since March of 2011 the Sikh worship center run by Gov. Haley’s father. At least five lawsuits have been filed against the Sikh Society of South Carolina since 2010, alleging that the group bilked contractors out of nearly $130,000 for the construction of a new temple.

Gov. Haley is reported to have managed the temple’s finances as late as 2003, and our sources believe any indictment would center on what happened to the missing money.

__________

A social private club can do what they want. But a club where people come for business can’t. If Augusta National is a club that invites members because of business connections it no a private club entitled to do what it wants. If they invite her because she is CEO of IBM then I think they forfeit their private club designation. Legal technicalities.

It is time Democrats learned the difference between a subsidy and a tax write off. A subsidy is a “payment” by one entity to another. A tax write off is a business expense that reduces the axable income of the business. The Obamanistas want the simple minded to think that the government some how gives money to oil companies. Not true. The government does not write checks to the oil companies. Every business is allowed to write off the cost of doing business. Oil companies are no different.

I come from a long line of woman’s libbers. I am female and have fought all my life for equal rights for the next generation, of which I have two. They in turn have taken up my cause. Two years ago we were in Augusta the weekend before the masters for a soccer tournament and one of my daughters got a history of the Masters. She was infuriated that woman were not allowed. As strongly as I feel Augusta is wrong in not allowing woman, I feel they have a right since they are private. I explained this to her (but she didn’t like it and to this day finds the Master disgusting). I do feel if men were smart, they would go to the board and demand this rule be changed. But, we are in Ga., where the redneck mentality still rules and the intelligence level is seen every two years on our voting record. Until woman raise their sons to make sure the “good ole boy network” isn’t cool anymore, this rule will stand. I fortunately, also have a son who loves his bro time, but will stand for woman’s rights down to being thankful he had a strong woman backing him while in Iraq and Afghantsan. The rule wil fall, it is just a matter of when.

HereWeGo!: But, we are in Ga., where the redneck mentality still rules and the intelligence level is seen every two years on our voting record. Until woman raise their sons to make sure the “good ole boy network” isn’t cool anymore, this rule will stand.

@HereWeGo!.. Your rationale is the perfect example of the common liberal argument. You stand up for everyone’s rights that align with the way you view things, but generalize disagreeing opinions as redneck and unintelligent. Are there some sexist people who are against women being admitted to Augusta? Sure. But the majority of commenters I’ve seen, that don’t agree with forcing the issue at Augusta, believe that because they believe in a PRIVATE organization’s RIGHT to admit whatever members it pleases. We are not talking about a public institution. People should have the right to pursue their own objectives, WITH WHOM they please, so long as they don’t interfere with someone else’s right to do the same. Women or any minority can start a group, charity, country club, etc. and admit who they want. Why should people be forced to admit members to their private organization that they don’t want to? There is NO INEQUALITY here. Women are more than welcome to start an organization and not allow men (they already do, btw, but I doubt you are clamoring about the injustice there).

Here we go again, trying to pressure Augusta National into the woman thing. I thing if Burke and the media had just let nature takes it course you may have seen the first woman member. Now that the media and Ms Burke are talking about what they should do and should have done you may force them to flex the muscles and remind you that they will on their time schedule not anybody else’s. I could care less who is a member at Augusta, I don’t offered tickets from any of them and am not a major client to IBM either. I did enjoy Hooty beating down Martha when she thought she was so powerful she could force the issue!! No, I am not a male chauvinist either!

What don’t you get? This is a private club – not funded or run by the government. Reminds me of the sex changer who wants to be MISS Universe or whatever. Sorry – if you weren’t born a woman you can’t be Miss Universe. AND if you weren’t born black you can’t be Miss Black Universe. Sounds fair to me.

Next thing you know people will want everyone to be asexual. Eliminate females and males and just have no sex at all. Clone everyone and make them all just alike. No races, no sexes, Would this be your ideal world? Sounds boring to me.

sheepdawg, this issue, for most people, isn’t about bigotry. Its about a private organizations right to congregate with, and only with, the people it chooses. This is a principled issue that applies to every demographic. A woman’s organization should not be forced to allow men into it if a few men are offended when they are denied entry. Same goes for every minority as well. No one is fighting for a white males rights above anybody else’s. No one at Augusta is exercising a right that every other minority does not have. You’re mischaracterizing the issue as sexist is ridiculous. Augusta probably would have let women in by now on their own accord if they weren’t forced to flex their freedom as a private organization to allow whomever they please.

I find it terrible that a company like IBM would associate itself with this close-minded country club. If we are to have a society without discrimination then we need to stop supporting clubs with backward ideas.

If they didn’t put on the best of the four golf majors every year would anyone care if there was a private mens golf club in Augusta Georgia?

Here we go!

ChrisATL – Read again what I posted. I do not disagree with what you said. It is a private organization and therefore have a right to do what they want. Doesn’t make it right, but they have a right. My remark about Ga. being redneck is not just about this issue. It is all the issues I have seen in the last 10 years. I have lived here all my life and this state is truly embarrassing. Look at education, the flag issue, Chip rogers stands for all paying their mortgages until it comes time for him to pay the bank on HIS default. These are the kinds of irresponsible people running and ruining our state. Yes I am liberal in my thinking, that doesn’t mean I think ONLY liberal people have the only good idea. I personally could care less about the Masters or mens clubs. I have no desire to go and if you want to go, great. I do think there will be a time whent he wall comes down and woman will be admitted. When, I don’t know. There are far too many serious issues going on in the world than worrying about a golf club who just admitted bAfrican Americans 12 years ago (because they had to) and still refuse to admit woman. I see it as their issue, not mine.

Wow, I actually agree with something Jay wrote. Must be a crazy Friday indeed. This is a very good organic opportunity for Augusta National to take that step without it being some feminist strongarm move. Good piece.

Augusta National should do what it did in the past. They admitted a token Black member and we never heard about the issue again. I doubt if he ever stepped foot on the first tee.

I was going to say that the token Black member invited to join in 1990 never darken the door at Augusta National, and we haven’t heard anything about that issue since. Invite Ginny, let her say yes or no, and move on.
