Let’s acknowledge from the beginning that there are no grounds to believe that Florida’s “stand your ground” law can be blamed for the events leading up to the tragic shooting of Trayvon Martin.
George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch fanatic who shot Martin, may have had no idea that Florida even had such a law. And even if he did know, that knowledge might not have changed his behavior in any way. The only thing we know for certain is that Sanford police cited the law in explaining why they lacked probable cause to arrest Zimmerman.
So setting aside the Martin tragedy, what possible purpose does a “stand your ground” law serve in the first place? What good can it possibly achieve, particularly when implemented outside the home?
Dealing with an intruder inside the home is quite a different matter. And every person of course has the right to defend themselves and others from bodily harm. That right existed before passage of “stand your ground” laws around the country; it exists today in states that did not pass “stand your ground” laws.
We’re dealing instead with something very different than mere self-defense. “Stand your ground” laws state that if an armed person faces a choice between safely withdrawing from a scene or standing his or her ground and killing someone, that person “has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force,” as Florida law puts it.
That’s what I don’t get. I understand that there are macho fools out there who believe that backing down from a fight is a worse outcome than shooting and killing another person. I just don’t see why in a civilized country the law should validate and even encourage that mentality.

Well, I would be scared, until I could see his face and eyes. I used to work in downtown Atlanta. In the early nineties I was afraid to walk outside in the middle of the morning or mid-afternoons. We moved our offices about that time out of downtown. I had a few blacks challenge me. I would ignore them. One just looked and said mockingly “You are one coold dude, Man” becuase I would not look at him. Just kept staring straight agea a the red light, wishing it would turn green and I could get out of there.

Since a grand jury might return a “no bill” I predict they will just go before a judge and get a “probable cause” warant and not risk a grand jury investigation.

http://news.yahoo.com/foxs-geraldo-rivera-im-sorry-hoodie-221726122.html
NEW YORK (AP) — Fox News Channel commentator Geraldo Rivera said Tuesday that he’s sorry for suggesting that a hoodie worn by unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin was as much responsible for his death as the neighborhood watch captain who shot him.
Rivera said a conversation with his oldest son on Monday convinced him he was wrong. Rivera said it was the first time 32-year-old Gabriel Rivera had said he was ashamed of something his dad had said — and it caused the dad a sleepless night.
“He had never, ever used language like that,” Rivera said. “It was like, ‘Whoa, what have I done that would make my son say that?’”

I understood what Geraldo’s point is, and I don’t agree with it. To agree with that is a copout to allowing prejudices and biases override your thinking and common sense. Somebody brought up walking downtown earlier, and I always get a kick out of the purse clutching and stuff that goes on whenever I walk by melanin deficient females. I guess that since I’m a big Black guy, I’m automatically a threat. However, when I’m in uniform, it’s the complete opposite reaction.
A hoodie is just that, a hoodie. It doesn’t define the person, nor does it transform the person. Based on his logic, we should all be scared of people in business suits as well since that’s generally what bankers wear, and a few of them robbed the sh*t out of us back in the 2000’s. I bet nobody blinks when doing financial business with someone in a suit.

Jay,
Many laws on the books are unnecessary. Whether “Stand Your Ground” laws are among them certainly depends on one’s point of view. This law in Georgia was debated 5-6 years ago before being passed and signed into law. Not saying the law can’t be amended or repealed but why now?
The reason is the focus from the Trayvon Martin case and the FL version of the law. It is interesting to observe folks backtracking from their statements about the Martin case as more and more details of the incident become public. Of course, some will not bother trying to walk back their incendiary remarks while others, like you, will try and change the subject.
Perhaps local law enforcement in the Martin case will eventually charge Zimmerman. The fact that he remains free and uncharged with a crime is telling.

At his actual age of 17 he was much bigger. The question remains was Zimmerman attacked from behind as he walked back to his truck or did he shoot Martin in cold blood. I don’t know that answer and neither do you.
He was 140 pounds big whoop – Zimmerman was 240. Wanna do the math on that?
BTW 911 call from Zimmerman said that Martin was RUNNING AWAY. Now what? He was aggressively running away? Running away aggressively? Running away so that he could aggressively attack later on?
=============
oh and to the mystery meat -if the kid was white, Zimmerman would’ve been arrested on the scene.

I wonder if we’d be hearing any of this crap if it had been some white kid, wearing a hoodie, smoking dope and walking through any SW Atlanta neighborhood at night, smacking some black guy in the face with his fist, then running away?
I wonder how many paces he’d get before a fussilade of bullets from every direction cut him to pieces?
Duh.
Maybe we see get the KKK to put up a reward for the ‘apprehension’ of the murderer.
Now THAT would get press coverage, the kind that media stooges drool for (you know, like Pavlov’s dog, say ‘racism’ and they always begin to grin and drool).

_________
T’s girlfriend was listening on the cell phone. She heard T speak first and ask Z why he was following him. Z replied and asked what was he doing in the neighborhood. Then she heard sounds of pushing and shoveing and the phone went dead. Does not sound like Z was hit form behind. More like push came to shove and a fight broke out.

Debbie,
140 Lbs.? I don’t really know the size advantage/disadvantage and I don’t think you could really know either. Sounds like you may have an agenda, ideological or some other reason.

Well, if White people whipped up enough of a frenzy after no arrests were made and it appeared that there was no serious attempt at investigating, I’m sure you’d hear the same amount of protesting, if not more were the perpetrator known and identified as a Black man with a criminal past.

I’ve only heard of one eyewitness that said he saw Trayvon on top. There are two females who said they saw Zimmerman on top of Trayvon, who was face down, after the shot. One witness does not make for plenty.
my professor at Spelman, (female), said that in the law of the world, one man trumps twenty women. If 20 women saw something they wont be believed as long as one man saw the samesomething differently.

Don, did your magic eight ball tell you that?
Midori, it is always interesting to me how the racists, replete with their endless stereotypes about picks in the hair and tattoos and saggy pants, come out of the woodwork for this type of topic, isn’t it?
It reminds me of those Reagan and Nixon dickheads who took such glee in insulting long-haired, sandal wearing hippies.
They ain’t laughing now. They’re still trying to figure out how they got so decimated in their culture wars…
