Wow. This is true slime.
Some of you may recall Sandra Fluke, a student at Georgetown University and former head of Georgetown Law Students for Reproductive Justice, who was barred by House Republicans from offering a woman’s perspective at a male-dominated hearing on the Obama administration’s contraception rule.

Later, House Democrats set up their own hearing in which Fluke was the star witness. Her full prepared testimony can be found here, but as the AP reported it:
“Fluke, a third-year law student, said that Georgetown Law, a Jesuit institution, does not provide contraception coverage in its student health plan and that contraception can cost a woman more than $3,000 during law school. She spoke of a friend who had an ovary removed because the insurance company wouldn’t cover the prescription birth control she needed to stop the growth of cysts.”
Think what you will of the issue or of Fluke’s testimony. Nothing the young woman said or did earned her this, from Rush Limbaugh:
“What does it say about the college coed Susan [sic] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex? What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex.
“She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We’re the pimps.
“The johns, that’s right. We would be the johns — no! We’re not the johns. Well — yeah, that’s right. Pimp’s not the right word.
“OK, so, she’s not a slut. She’s round-heeled. I take it back.”
I’ve shied away from accusations that this issue is being driven on the right by misogyny, because in many cases it’s not. But clearly, in many other cases that’s exactly what’s driving it. Limbaugh’s attack is a vicious attempt to frighten and intimidate women into going silent on the issue, and the message is intended not merely for Fluke but for women in general. Limbaugh is a frightened little bully attempting to keep women in their place, and in that regard is no different than the mullahs of Afghanistan who condemn non-virgin women to a stoning.
It is a despicable, and it tells you a lot about the current state of affairs in our nation that someone with a podium as grand and lucrative as Limbaugh’s can spout such bile about a young woman whom he has never met, and do so without consequence.

True story. One Christmas I got my dad a bottle of a new vodka, Glacier, from Idaho. Kept it out of sight in the garage, went out there, poured a couple glasses, went back in the house and handed him one. He took a sip, looked at me and said “It’s potato, but it isn’t Polish. Where’s it from?”
I knew a guy, distributor for a spirits company. Said he’d known a few people in his life with taste buds like that. It still blows me away.

I keep telling you the recent USA Today poll where the majority of voters in swing states are against Obamacare is THE sign.
If you had similar polling that indicated dissatisfaction with the Affordable Care Act[1] was a primary concern among likely voters, I’d say you’d have a case to make.
——
1. Pet peeve–I realize you feel you gotta call it “Obamacare” or an angel doesn’t get its wings, or something. For the record, I thought Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative was a giant money dump and wasn’t afraid of saying so, back in the day. But I didn’t refer to the SDI as, you know, “Star Wars.” Certainly not when discussing the matter with conservatives with whom I felt capable of educating.

When I heard about this last night I was fuming. Jerks like Limpball have no clue at all. What many people, especially men don’t understand is that there are several reasons for using the pill. Which is probably why it’s sometimes referred to that way. I personally used them purely for medical reasons and delayed doing so for the longest because of the “stigma” attached to them. It was a tremendous help, and I wish I had been brave enough to use them earlier. It would have prevented a lot of pain along with other issues. That pill addict can plant his lips where the sun don’t shine.

Speaking of Insurance and Entitlements – I will be 65 in a few days. Applied for the mandatory Medicare and discovered they are means testing Part B. Part A is Hospital, Part B is doctor. The basic monthly charge is $99, but they look at your past year tax return to determine your adjusted gross income. There are three brackets above basic where there is an increasing premimum added to the basic $99. I don’t have a problem with it being fair, but the end result is I will be paying much more each month for medical and prescription drug coverage than before Medicare.

Max – I would typically agree with this stance, but in this case, I have issues with the fact that people see birth control pills and only feel that they’re able to be used to prevent pregnancy. My wife was put on them at a young age, not for that reason, but for other, far more serious reasons. One of which being so she could have a chance at maybe one day being able to have children. So, denying medicine that is used for more than just one thing, because you can’t agree with one of its uses is ridiculous. Also, there is a HUGE double standard where they’re supplying Viagra through their insurance policy and not birth control.
Also, not using this as an argument or a defense or anything else, just as a “hey I didn’t know that” – but who knew Georgetown was affiliated with a religious institution?

Hmmm. Let’s see now. We got a student whose family can afford the tuition at an elite, expensive university like Georgetown but they want to whine about the $50 a month for birth control. Tell ya what missy. Spend more time studying, use condoms at 50 cents a pop when you need to do your recreational thing, and quit asking the taxpayers to pay for free sheet for you. And quit your damn lying about the cost being $3,000. How anyone can grant such a bald faced damn liar credibility for such a blatant lie is mystifying.
You know we’ve gone off the deep end when Georgetown students are now complaining about not getting their birth control paid for by the taxpayers.
Oh, and about your friend who had an ovary removed because her insurance didn’t pay for the pill. ONE MORE TIME!- If you can afford a Georgetown law school education then you can pay for your freaking birth control. If it was that important the girl should have gotten a part time job during the summer and made enough money to pay for her birth control for the next 3 years. Or put that $50 on plastic or asked mom and dad for $50 more or taken out a small student loan or gone to that great planned parenthood or county health dept. or somewhere.

As for Rush being a bully, unfortunately, he speaks for millions of folks who have too much pent-up anger over issues they don’t understand but want to be led by someone who oversimplifies everything.
Is there waste in government? Sure. And that includes the billions of dollars down the drain and decades to produce the Osprey aircraft.
Is there waste in business? Certainly. And that includes expensive sales trips for every area of enterprise, just don’t expect me to pay for them when the insurance/financial/manufacturing company has been bailed out by the government.
I really love the way Rush and FauxNews are quick to criticize the New York Times or competing networks when it does or says something they don’t agree with, but they fall all over themselves with complaints of harsh treatment when they do something similar. The big difference is that when the Times, the major networks etc are caught in a lie or step too far over society’s lines, the perpetrator is either suspended or fired.
It doesn’t happen with conservative talking heads/networks, though in far too many instances they should have.

I read the first few pages and especially the page where Jay admitted that the true cost of the pill is about $50 a month or $1800 a year instead of the $3,000 that the girl charged.
In any event the idea that the girl, her friend, and others receiving a Georgetown education can’t come up with $50 a month for the pill is ludicrous. She’ll make a pile of dough after she graduates. Let the woman pay for it via a loan, plastic, or working a part time job. Not my problem.

If you had of read a few more pages, you would see where, without insurance, my wife’s pills cost about $90 per month, which is, oddly enough, right at $1,000 per year, which when multiplied by 3 (wait for it, you go to law school for 3 years) comes out to $3,000 to cover the cost of birth control during law school.
I’m very curious as to the people who are trying to say that she claimed birth control cost $3,000 per year, as she clearly said $3,000 over the course of law school. Which is 3 years.

Irrational – On an individual basis yes, but that assumes that everyone denied birth control would not take personal responsibility and take steps on their own to prevent pregnancy. That’s a big assumption. And possibly having the baby for those that do would force them to grow up and assume some responsibility. The question remains that should the government dictate that; the market could just as easily come to either decision – if the cost of caring for the number of people becoming pregnant exceeds the cost of providing low cost contraception, then the companies will decide to offer it. It the pedulum swings the other way, then it will be the opposite and there would most likely be a mix of offerigs at differing market costs for us to choose from (or to make employers more or less desirable to us as consumers).

Partisay – of course the girl took it personal, but the point is he does not know her, and would have said the same of any woman giving the same testimony.
Rush is on the air – first comment was on this firestorm.

Since ‘Breitbart’s’ name came up, and given that Keith Olbermann had been on his case for the last couple of weeks over his, Breitbart’s, rants against the ‘Occupiers’, and since I, like Jack McCoy at Law&Order, don’t believe in ‘coincidences’, I don’t believe for a minute that his death was from ‘natural causes’. He either ‘offed’ himself or he was invited to join Ken Lay, fake his death and, I assume any number of other ‘well-healed’ wing-nuts, at their ‘undisclosed location’ where they go when ‘the heat’s on’…probably some South Seas Island.

Rush was definitely wrong to call the woman a prostitute or slut.
What he should have called her is a publicity hound or an entitlement pig. If she’s got time to go testify before Congress and time to participate in nonsense like serving as the head of the Georgetown university law students for “reproductive justice” whatever the hell they mean by “reproductive justice” then the girl has time to flip burgers 1 night a week to get her birth control paid for.

The witness was a prop; she made up the facts; she was a pawn of the left. Rush used strong language to make a point. Most media types and entertainers could be accused of the same. The issue is not the pills, but why one person should be compelled to pay for another’s contraception.

Duckhead wants folks to pay for medicine that insurance SHOULD pay for and then sucks up to millionaires and says they can’t afford to pay taxes. He has zero credibility, may as well hand it to himself.

Max – Isn’t trying to obtain birth control in the first place showing personal responsibility? I don’t agree that insurance should be able to deny medicine. I just don’t. I don’t care what the medicine is for. Last year, I was prescribed something for a stomach condition that my insurance company denied. I sought other options, but it would have cost me close to $1,000 for one course of medicine. Yeah, it wasn’t for a life threatening disease, but I have to say, my quality of life has certainly improved since I had that problem taken care of.

“I read the first few pages and especially the page where Jay admitted that the true cost of the pill is about $50 a month or $1800 a year instead of the $3,000 that the girl charged. ”
Subsequent posts by USinUK and others explained that when office charges and exam charges are included the costs can ratched right up. They also noted the cost wasn’t per year, but during three years of law school, in which case the cost would be greater than 3k.

Just got this in my email…good news. After all equality for ALL is what we, as a nation, are all about…
As an aside, you don’t think this is the “natural Cause” that killed Breitbart, do you….
Dear Normal,
History is being made today. With Governor Martin O’Malley’s signature, marriage equality is about to become law in Maryland. Maryland will be the eighth state, plus the District of Columbia, to enact such a groundbreaking law.
This triumph comes in one of the greatest strings of victories for LGBT rights we’ve ever seen. In just three weeks, following a major court victory against Proposition 8, you’ve helped us pass marriage equality bills in Washington, New Jersey, and now Maryland.
And despite New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s heartbreaking veto, the legislature’s pro-equality vote marked a powerful moment in this years-long battle.
These victories are exhilarating, but they are not accidents. All three of these legislative gains are the result of years of working together to elect fair-minded candidates and placing organizers on the ground to build support for these bills. It’s all possible because of the unwavering activism of over a million HRC members and supporters like you.
Let’s celebrate our victories and get ready for the fights ahead. Put a point on the marriage equality map you’ve helped draw – and join thousands around the country in congratulating Maryland on this remarkable moment:
In the coming months, right-wing groups will try to derail marriage equality at the ballot box. The National Organization for Marriage is already collecting signatures in Washington and Maryland to try to undo these victories – just as they did with Proposition 8 – and they’re tapping super-rich, anonymous donors every day for more cash. We’re organizing in these states to stop them.
And another thing is becoming clear: Something is changing in America. Just eight years ago, two women would be denied a marriage license by every city clerk in America. Today, marriage equality has been enacted in eight states – and that number keeps growing. It’s all thanks to you.
Let’s show the cynics, the radicals, and the right wing how big our community is and the passion driving this movement. Send a message of support by posting your comment on the internet now.
Knowing how hard we’ve worked together makes these victories so much sweeter. And knowing who we’re fighting for – loving couples around the country, their kids, their communities – makes it that much more important.
Thank you for all that you have done, and will do, to continue winning the civil rights battle of our generation.
Sincerely,
Joe Solmonese
President

JohnnyReb,
Good for you. I spoke with a retired Delta pilot once about his Medicare. Same thing. He was blessed and had a good plan and a very substantial retirement income of around 200k I’m guessing. He actually had to pay up near $200 a month for his part B because he made so much money. I hope you don’t get tagged too hard on your part B premium given a healthy income.

That can’t be true.
According to Adam, ALL conservatives are EXACTLY the same and he knows how ALL of us thinks and what motivates ALL of us, and what postition ALL of us take on ANY and ALL topics.
And if we haven’t stated a position, he will tell us what our position is and then tell us that we are wrong for having a position that HE assigned to us.

Senate defeats bill to reverse birth control rule
In this Feb. 28, 2012, photo, Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., talks to reporters foll…
WASHINGTON — The Senate has defeated a Republican effort to roll back President Barack Obama’s policy on contraception insurance coverage.
The measure sponsored by Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt, a Republican, was defeated 51-48. The measure, an amendment to a pending transportation bill, would have allowed employers and insurers to opt out of portions of the president’s health care law they found morally objectionable. That would have included the law’s requirement that insurers cover the costs of birth control.
Republicans said it was a matter of freedom of religion; Democrats said it was an assault on women’s rights and could be used to cancel virtually any part of the law.

Here is an alternative. Why doesn’t this girl get insurance that DOES pay for her birth control instead of trying to force Georgetown University to change their policy, which will I’m sure increase the cost of all the students insurance plans?

Irrational and Paul,
Since I’m late to the party and some of you are citing $90 a month or $3,000 over 3 years then lets acknowledge that. Still doesn’t answer the question as to why a Georgetown university law student expects others to pay her tab for birth control. That’s all I really want answered. Is why others should be expected to pay for her birth control and as a corollary why can’t she or her family pay for it themselves? I may be late to the party but I’ve yet to see a reasonable explanation as to why taxpayers should be on the hook for her birth control.
