Limbaugh’s vile attack on a student who dared to speak up

Wow. This is true slime.

Some of you may recall Sandra Fluke, a student at Georgetown University and former head of Georgetown Law Students for Reproductive Justice, who was barred by House Republicans from offering a woman’s perspective at a male-dominated hearing on the Obama administration’s contraception rule.

-2

Later, House Democrats set up their own hearing in which Fluke was the star witness. Her full prepared testimony can be found here, but as the AP reported it:

“Fluke, a third-year law student, said that Georgetown Law, a Jesuit institution, does not provide contraception coverage in its student health plan and that contraception can cost a woman more than $3,000 during law school. She spoke of a friend who had an ovary removed because the insurance company wouldn’t cover the prescription birth control she needed to stop the growth of cysts.”

Think what you will of the issue or of Fluke’s testimony. Nothing the young woman said or did earned her this, from Rush Limbaugh:

“What does it say about the college coed Susan [sic] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex? What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex.

“She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We’re the pimps.

“The johns, that’s right. We would be the johns — no! We’re not the johns. Well — yeah, that’s right. Pimp’s not the right word.

“OK, so, she’s not a slut. She’s round-heeled. I take it back.”

I’ve shied away from accusations that this issue is being driven on the right by misogyny, because in many cases it’s not. But clearly, in many other cases that’s exactly what’s driving it. Limbaugh’s attack is a vicious attempt to frighten and intimidate women into going silent on the issue, and the message is intended not merely for Fluke but for women in general. Limbaugh is a frightened little bully attempting to keep women in their place, and in that regard is no different than the mullahs of Afghanistan who condemn non-virgin women to a stoning.

It is a despicable, and it tells you a lot about the current state of affairs in our nation that someone with a podium as grand and lucrative as Limbaugh’s can spout such bile about a young woman whom he has never met, and do so without consequence.

“The Republicans did not want to waste time on listening to collegiate complaints of sex and studies while it wrestled with more important economic issues.”

okay … I didn’t want to waste my time reading Donovan … but if I must … THAT particular passage made me laugh out loud.

they didn’t want to hear complaints from a college student???

they had NO PROBLEM wasting a whole day listening to complaints from a bunch of men who will NEVER buy the pill (religious conviction or not) …

and as for the “more concerned with the economy” – just HOW many jobs packages have the GOP come up with???

oh, that’s right.

Slick Willy said today that he “embraced”, the Keystone pipeline and thought it’s installation would bring down the cost of a gallon of gas and lessen our dependence on ME oil. Even “embraced” changing the route to make Bozo’s environmentalists happy. Then that dolt of an Energy Secretary stated that it was not the policy of this government to lessen the price of a gallon of gas…… this administration would be much happier with higher gas prices as long a we “pursue” green sources of energy. That ought to make the truckers happy. Man, you can’t make this stuff up……. it just keeps rearing it’s ugly head.

J. Cool — “Breitbart confronting OWS calling them filthy animals and freaks. ”

Apparently, he wasn’t actually confronting them at all. I saw an interview with someone who was covering that particular protest, and they said that Breitbart was a considerable distance away from the OWS protestors. In addition, they indicated that the protestors didn’t really seem aware that Breitbart was shouting at them at all, and that the people who seem to be restraining Breitbart were just trying to get him to go back inside since he was more than a bit intoxicated.

My wife suggested taking that video clip and mashing it up with Guadalcanal Diary’s “Whiskey Talk,” but I dissuaded her.

Boortz will be on until noon….. then he’s followed by three hours of Limbaugh. You liberals should tune in….. even you might just learn something.

The presumptuousness of this message is amazing.

For the record, I’ve certainly spent hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of hours of my life listening to and processing harsh, nasty right wing radio, going back to the pre-Limbaugh jackasses like NYC’s Bob Grant. I mean, I’ve been commuting to work by car most of the last coupla decades, and for a long time, that was about the only political analysis to be had on the broadcast spectrum.

I am more than aware of their sleazy methodology — hang on the mute button to edit anything a dissenting voice might have to counter your stupidity; have the screeners allow in only the least-prepared “liberals” so that you can mock them occasionally; prompt your fans to repeat garbage talking points; and whatever you do, BUILD A STRAW MAN AND BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF IT EVERY SINGLE SEGMENT.

And yes, there are some left-wing dopplegangers that have been known to deploy such methodology. I’ve heard my share of straw men built and knocked down on Air America, back in the day. Part of the game. I get that.

Thing is, my time spent monitoring such aural atrocities is probably one zillion times that spent by a “Kayaker” listening to anything even remotely comparable from the left—your Randi Rhodeses, your Mike Malloys, and suchlike.

So no, I won’t be tuning in today. I might be more inclined to give Neal/Rush/Sean some more of my beautiful mind, if Kayaker and his ilk demonstrated just once that they’d taken in such progressive programming, unfiltered, for more than a minute or two at a time.

I know what you mean. I’m 65, and my knees are going faster than I’d like, but life as a young Sailor is what did it to me. I still remember a club named Pauline’s in Olongapo City, P.I. I think I probably still owe them money for damages caused. Even lost a couple of rockers, time or two. Misspent youth…but well played. Now I don’t drink either. Admitted a year ago I was an alcoholic, but Damn, I had fun back then… :)

“both could benefit immensely from a good butt-kicking!”

And the kicker would feel better too!

Max – Unless you preform all medical procedures on yourself, you already pay for things you apparently don’t want to pay for. If you have insurance, your money goes to cover things you apparently don’t agree with. If you go to a hospital, your fees there go to pay for those that didn’t pay, and therefore cover things you apparently don’t agree with. Therefore, your outrage seems manufactured. Maybe you can just admit you don’t think women should have the freedom to have sex out of wedlock, or be pain free (or something close to it) from ovarian cysts.

this doesn’t involve you in the least.

Doggone – One suspects that if we auctioned off tickets to preform that butt kicking, we could put a large dent in the national debt.

In the past I was seriously worried that crazed Muslims would swoop down on us and force Sharia law upon our land. But, now that I clearly see just how crazed our far-right Christians are and how fast their numbers are growing I am relieved. The near future will pit their crazed Muslins against our crazed Christians. Of course, God is on our side and we will all wind up in heaven with ring-side seats to watch those Muslims being tortured in hell. YeeeeHawwww –Praise the Lord and pour on more torture!!!!

Rush like many in the GOP will talk a good game, it just won’t work in reality and if nobody’s looking they will do not what they say.

carlos – Ever wonder how many people miss the part where Muslims and Christians worship the same god, they just call him by different names?

There’s going to be a big surprise in November for some. I keep telling you the recent USA Today poll where the majority of voters in swing states are against Obamacare is THE sign. But, it does not fit your idea/wishes of how things go, so you ignore the importance.

Paul – Nah, I was 16. I had tried some liquor at some point around then, but it was white lightnin (yeah, I grew up in the country) and wasn’t so crazy about it yet. I hadn’t yet discovered the joys of fermented potato juice. MMMMM…

irational – I understand insurance but I believe the market should set the rules, so i am free to pick and choose what coverage i want to obtain. It has nothing to do with women’s rights. They are free to do what they want. I don’;t believe the government should be dictating so much of our life. And I know they already do but do we really need them deciding what should be in insurance policies (we have brains and can read what we are buying). Why is that a federal issue?

Stick

That’s the same argument the Romans used with the Christians.

Oh, man. I was Army, but I had some friends in the Navy who said OC was like Adult Disneyland. :D
