Limbaugh’s vile attack on a student who dared to speak up
Wow. This is true slime.
Some of you may recall Sandra Fluke, a student at Georgetown University and former head of Georgetown Law Students for Reproductive Justice, who was barred by House Republicans from offering a woman’s perspective at a male-dominated hearing on the Obama administration’s contraception rule.
Later, House Democrats set up their own hearing in which Fluke was the star witness. Her full prepared testimony can be found here, but as the AP reported it:
“Fluke, a third-year law student, said that Georgetown Law, a Jesuit institution, does not provide contraception coverage in its student health plan and that contraception can cost a woman more than $3,000 during law school. She spoke of a friend who had an ovary removed because the insurance company wouldn’t cover the prescription birth control she needed to stop the growth of cysts.”
Think what you will of the issue or of Fluke’s testimony. Nothing the young woman said or did earned her this, from Rush Limbaugh:
“What does it say about the college coed Susan [sic] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex? What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex.
“She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We’re the pimps.
“The johns, that’s right. We would be the johns — no! We’re not the johns. Well — yeah, that’s right. Pimp’s not the right word.
“OK, so, she’s not a slut. She’s round-heeled. I take it back.”
I’ve shied away from accusations that this issue is being driven on the right by misogyny, because in many cases it’s not. But clearly, in many other cases that’s exactly what’s driving it. Limbaugh’s attack is a vicious attempt to frighten and intimidate women into going silent on the issue, and the message is intended not merely for Fluke but for women in general. Limbaugh is a frightened little bully attempting to keep women in their place, and in that regard is no different than the mullahs of Afghanistan who condemn non-virgin women to a stoning.
It is a despicable, and it tells you a lot about the current state of affairs in our nation that someone with a podium as grand and lucrative as Limbaugh’s can spout such bile about a young woman whom he has never met, and do so without consequence.

Truly I don’t care if insurance covers contraception or not. It may be that it is more fiscally responsible to do it than not do it..
It just gets tiresome listening to Dems absolutely refuse to hold an individual accountable for their life choices (except for the choice of being conservative of course) and hide behind obscure anomalous incidences as justification. Conservatives don’t get the choice to show compassion in addressing these incidents because you’ve already justified the risky behavior that cased them.

Also, birth control, isn’t the only reason to take birth control. There are other reasons, and not everyone who takes birth control is a slut. Meanwhile here at home, did anyone happen to hear Bortz’s totally disgusting and tastless (is that redundant?) diatribe yesterday calling Obama, among other things, a “festering pimple on the face of America, a sucking chest wound….” I can’t remember it all but it was over the top even by Bortz’s standards. (I am not a regular listener, but flip over there occasionally when driving. I guess out of some masochistic impulse.) Anyway, I am astounded that can pass with no repercusions. Has he no shame? Has WSB no shame or standards of decency? And my question to all the right wing haters is, are they going to admit complicity when/if President Obama is assassinated? Will they acknowledge the blood on their hands? Likewise will all of the church members that have passed along outrageous, slanderous, untrue emails about our President equally admit the blood on their hands, if such a tragic event were to come to pass? I have recently been warned by local “friends” against showing any public support for the president (bumper stickers for example) as being too dangerous. Right wing hate speech has given birth to this poisonous atmosphere.

The first boy that wants to take her anywhere will have to go through an extensive screening program, including meeting his parents,what are his grades, where does he go to church, what does he want to do with his life, etc. When he shows up we’ll have a big ol’ gun cleaning party waiting on him. “Hey, nice to meet you boy….What’s your name again?” “Why?”, asks the boy. “Because I’m going to write your name on this here bullet and the first time you touch my daughter in any way that’s not proper, I’m going to use it on you!”

If 4 in 10 women at Georgetown are having enough sex to spend 3K/month on birth control devices, that’s one hell of a lot of screwing. 36K/yr on birth control devices!! Someone is paying for that. The insurance companies are sure as hell not giving these things away. Where were these schools when I was a young man.

The issue is women’s health, not sexual activity. All employers should offer insurance to employees that protect both men’s and women’s health. An employers’ religious affiliation shouldn’t even be a consideration in matters of public (and private) health.
Also, Rush Limbaugh, with his four (and counting) marriages and history of drug addiction is in no position to judge anyone else’s behavior. Please.

You’re thinking it’s the boy doing the leading. I have a four-year-old boy and I thoroughly expect that the girls are going to be the ones leading him to places I don’t want him to go. Don’t be a sexist about it; girls are much more aggressive these days than they used to be.
