Wow. This is true slime.
Some of you may recall Sandra Fluke, a student at Georgetown University and former head of Georgetown Law Students for Reproductive Justice, who was barred by House Republicans from offering a woman’s perspective at a male-dominated hearing on the Obama administration’s contraception rule.

Later, House Democrats set up their own hearing in which Fluke was the star witness. Her full prepared testimony can be found here, but as the AP reported it:
“Fluke, a third-year law student, said that Georgetown Law, a Jesuit institution, does not provide contraception coverage in its student health plan and that contraception can cost a woman more than $3,000 during law school. She spoke of a friend who had an ovary removed because the insurance company wouldn’t cover the prescription birth control she needed to stop the growth of cysts.”
Think what you will of the issue or of Fluke’s testimony. Nothing the young woman said or did earned her this, from Rush Limbaugh:
“What does it say about the college coed Susan [sic] Fluke, who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex? What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex.
“She’s having so much sex she can’t afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex. What does that make us? We’re the pimps.
“The johns, that’s right. We would be the johns — no! We’re not the johns. Well — yeah, that’s right. Pimp’s not the right word.
“OK, so, she’s not a slut. She’s round-heeled. I take it back.”
I’ve shied away from accusations that this issue is being driven on the right by misogyny, because in many cases it’s not. But clearly, in many other cases that’s exactly what’s driving it. Limbaugh’s attack is a vicious attempt to frighten and intimidate women into going silent on the issue, and the message is intended not merely for Fluke but for women in general. Limbaugh is a frightened little bully attempting to keep women in their place, and in that regard is no different than the mullahs of Afghanistan who condemn non-virgin women to a stoning.
It is a despicable, and it tells you a lot about the current state of affairs in our nation that someone with a podium as grand and lucrative as Limbaugh’s can spout such bile about a young woman whom he has never met, and do so without consequence.

Well, realizing I’m coming in a bit late, but USinUK’s first comments were probably right on the money. I can easily see how it could cost that much. Some types of birth control pills aren’t cheap, and some women can’t take just any type of birth control pill. Without insurance, my wife’s pills would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,000 a year. On an aside, if she is a 3L, that means she graduates in May. Which means she could take and pass the bar sometime this summer if she worked really hard at it. Wonder just how long it will take her to put that law degree to work and pay off her student loans with Rush’s money? I know if someone went on the air and called my wife a whore, that’s exactly what we would be doing.

Limbaugh appears to have gone from calculating what will play with his audience and further enrich him to saying what he really thinks, regardless of the financial reward. And he does so without any concern for repercussions, as most of his listeners take seriously whatever he says.

The left did start the contraception debate. When Adam states one of the candidates is very vocal on the subject, he forgets that the same candidate has also stated several times he would not press to outlaw contraception. The same candidate also stated that he thought it would be crazy to think it would be outlawed. The rights issue was a religious freedom issue. The left deflected.

Limbaugh’s main point in this commentary was that there was so much sex going on at Georgetown University Law School that 4 in 10 women would have to spend up to 3K/yr on birth control devices just to keep up. And that at the expense of the taxpayer. He stated, and I listened to every word of this commentary, that if they were going to get laid that much, then the taxpayer should not be responsible for the bill. Guess that makes the ladies at Georgetown a little ahead of the curve, wouldn’t you say? Most insurance plans cover only a very limited number of ED drugs/mo for males. And that’s sure as hell no 3K. So get off your high horse, Bookman. This young lady was denied the privilege of speaking at the original committee hearing because the subject of contraception was not what the committee was convened for. She needed a box to stand on and wanted a forum to make her point. The fact that the Democrats would convene a hearing just for her is grandstanding at its best/worst. They are good at that.

I’m a bit left of center myself, especially on most economic issues. I’m not a fan of abortion, but I don’t think it should be illegal. I think the administration blundered on this one, though. As I understand it, there is no legal requirement for any employer or school to actually offer medical insurance. So the end result will likely be that entities objecting to coverage of certain medications or procedures will simply drop coverage for everyone. I can see some conservative institutions doing just that, if for no other reason than to provide Republicans with a sound bite for attack ads in October-November. I come from a military background (I’m still in the GA National Guard), and I tend to approach problems from perspective of doing what it takes to accomplish the mission. Practicality is high on my list of priorities, and I have a great fondness for Macedonian solutions for Gordian impediments. But I’ll have to go with the right-wingers on this one. The end result will not be good.

Limbaugh may have been absurd to prove his point but he often does that. Regardless of whether he is a nice guy or not, what he says is true about this. She wants everyone else to pay for her $3000/year contraception.
Of course you don’t see it but it’s a bit telling that she isn’t asking for special coverage when a female is prone to cysts. She asking for blanket contraception that she can’t afford for everyone just in case there is a female who is prone to cysts. An unnecessary expense which can be free if people simply reduce the distance between their knee caps until they can afford it.
Just like elective surgery isn’t covered; elective contraception shouldn’t be. If a procedure becomes medically necessary…..cover it.

First of all, the left did NOT start this debate. Think otherwise? Prove it. And labeling all non-Fox media outlets as “liberal” will not make your case, just so you know.
This whole thing started with Personhood USA, pressing years ago to define a zygote as a person, with a website that specifically said (until they decided it wouldn’t help their case) that they were against contraception too.
Finally, it doesn’t matter if Santorum says he would not push that particular aspect of his beliefs. I don’t believe him. In my view and opinion, he only said that so people like you, who are willing to give all conservatives the benefit of the doubt, would vote for him. …”the current state of affairs in our nation that someone with a podium” is exactly what you, Jay Bookman and Mike Luckovich, are are doing as well. It’s not just Rush Limbaugh.
For years you two have vilified, demeaned, and ridiculed our past president and current GOP candidates with insulting literary essays and illustrations. Hypocrisy at its best and you guys don’t even know you are doing it, but this is typical of the Democrat Party. I’m here to call you out along with your chirpy little peanut gallery that goes along with your shenanigans..
Little Miss Fluke is the mirror image of the Democrat Party and a component of the Occupy types. She represents the entitlement mentality that expects to be compensated by the government, insurance companies, or school systems for things that should be obtained personally. Based on the fact that she is going to Georgetown University, her parents and the parents of other students there can damn well afford such birth control expense. Outside of contraceptive medication to regulate periods or stem cystic growth, preventive measures for sexual adventure is not the responsibility of government, insurance companies, or school systems. It is an outrage that this child of higher education finds a congressional soap box to complain about unnecessary funding for birth control. An Outrage!
However, the podium of Jay Bookman provides a nice little bully bastion whereby he can come to the defense of this poor child who cries foul because she cannot get free birth control while trying to manage sex and studies at the expense of others paying for it. The Democrat Party is especially famous for demagoging issues that pertain to children or adolescence. Here we have another example of blaming a conservative voice for his objection to entitlement corruption. And here we have another example of the left hiding behind the skirts of our children.
The Republicans did not want to waste time on listening to collegiate complaints of sex and studies while it wrestled with more important economic issues. Therefore, it was your very own corrupt Nancy Pelosi who took up the banner for little Miss Fluke’s impassioned cry for “entitled” birth control give-outs. In true typical fashion, we see this hypocritical representitive of the Democrat Party from San Francisco lend her 2 cents defending the ills of society.
This is why this country is polarized and looking for new leadership. We have had enough.

Billings – 8:58 – not according to the Supremes, it’s not.

Afghanistan wasn’t just about getting Osama
It was mainly about mending a failed state that garbled crazy burkina
There will be a new Osama if we leave Afghanistan
Or we can build a wall around our country and stop trading with every country on earth which is what democrats prefer

Bosch – I wouldn’t go so far as to say ALL of them, but yeah, he was probably right. Now I’ve got to go do something to allow me to regain my conservative credentials. Ummm, ummm, any woman who has sex out of wedlock is a whore and should be branded with a big W on her chest and thighs to warn all others!

bman: She isn’t part of the staff, or faculty. She is a student. There IS a difference.
Only because that is what the “leaders” decided. And she disagrees. Got a problem with that? Fine. But does that make her a slut? Does that make it ok to call her a slut?

I keep reading that Georgetown women are having so much sex it requires $3k for contraceptives. People! Contraceptives are the same if you have sex three times a day or once in three years. It is to prevent conception -whenever- sex happens. One might allow for the added insurance against an unexpected pregnancy that would derail that pricey education.

“BTW, a 28 tablet Orthonovum prescription costs about 35 dollars”
PLUS THE DOCTOR’S FEES!!!
Plus, if you have medical issues – such as ovarian cysts – and you require an ultrasound, then that’s another added expense.
so, no, it’s NOT about a packet of pills. it’s about the costs to get the prescription.
and, no, despite your asinine assertions, you don’t take more pills if you have more sex.

Paul: Right after I posted that I saw Jay refer to the law of the land, a US Supreme Court decision, which ragnar dismissed as an appeal to authority.
Like I said, it’s a lack of understanding of logic at a base level.

Some of those women are undoubtedly having lots of sex with men taking Viagra, which is covered by insurance – see the double standard? Probably not.

Fighting contraception. Stopping domestic violence protections. Extending tax cuts for the wealthy, while hiking taxes on the middle class. Welcoming white supremacists to a conference, but banning gay conservatives.
The GOP has followed its extremist fringe off the deep end, leaving the rest of us back in the reality-based world befuddled. Their STRATEGISTS warned them NOT TO DO THIS, but it appears that to the GOP, radical fringe issue positions are like catnip.
In the last Republican presidential debate in Arizona, the candidates even spent several minutes discussing which of them is least in favor of allowing rape victims to have access to emergency contraception.

Billings: “this has NOTHING to do with tax money”
You’re right. It has more to do with religious freedom
No, it has NOTHING to do with religious freedom, unless your definition of religious freedom is “freedom to push my religion on everyone else through government.” Sorry, but we have this thing called the FIRST AMENDMENT, as you cons often like to point out, that prohibits that.
What is the difference between paying a woman a wage, that she then uses to go and buy Birth Control if she wants, versus paying an insurance company for a group policy that includes this coverage at no increase in cost, that the same female employees then can use to get Birth Control?
Certainly not religious freedom there, if your argument is they are subsidizing it. In both cases, the fact that they employ women AT ALL and provide health insurance AT ALL is subsidizing it.
Guess they should stop hiring women. Oh wait….

The best part of this blog was when Ragnar claimed to be a victim because of her viewpoints. I don’t recall anyone here calling Ragnar a s#&%.
