Mitt Romney won Arizona easily and took his native Michigan by just three percentage points, but in the end he did take it. That’s good news for the Romney campaign, good news for the Republican Party and good news for the United States of America.
It helps no one to have one of our major political parties take a headlong plunge into fanaticism and willful ignorance. That’s what the nomination of either Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum would represent. And while Romney’s pandering makes him a less than stalwart champion against those tendencies, under the circumstances he’ll have to do.
David Brooks described the GOP nominating process well the other day, writing:
” … we’ve had a primary campaign that isn’t really an argument about issues. It’s a series of heresy trials in which each of the candidates accuses the others of tribal impurity. Two kinds of candidates emerge from this process: first, those who are forceful but outside the mainstream; second, those who started out mainstream but look weak and unprincipled because they have spent so much time genuflecting before those who despise them.”
Romney is clearly the second type of candidate. And the sad thing is, should the former Massachusetts governor go on to win the nomination but lose the general election, his defeat will be cited by many as confirmation that the Republican Party loses when it chooses moderation. What ought to serve as a warning sign about the political perils of extremism will instead be interpreted as a validation of extremism.
Over at Redstate.com, conservatives are making that argument already, predicting a Romney loss this fall and taking solace that “at least we can be rid of him and, hopefully, his most ardent cheerleaders on November 7th.”
Yesterday, Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine announced her retirement, stripping the GOP and the country of one of the last remaining moderate voices in the party, a voice that in truth had already been all but silenced. Robert Bennett of Utah has already been purged. Another of the endangered, Republican icon Richard Lugar, is fighting for his political life in Indiana against a primary challenge. As John Danforth, a former senator and himself a symbol of a wiser, saner GOP, warned last fall:
“If Dick Lugar, having served five terms in the U.S. Senate and being the most respected person in the Senate and the leading authority on foreign policy, is seriously challenged by anybody in the Republican Party, we have gone so far overboard that we are beyond redemption.”
The forces within the party that feed on RINO meat have gotten so desperate for prey that they have turned on Orrin Hatch of Utah, a man whose conservative credentials were once considered impeccable. At this point, Hatch’s future rides on the outcome of party caucuses on March 15, and may have to survive a primary challenge after that.
It’s hard to know where all this leads, but the sense continues to grow that we’re building toward something noted in the history books as an important political turning point. I do know that when the circus comes to town on March 6, the Georgia primary, I’m picking up a Republican ballot and voting for MItt.
In your heart, you know that’s right.

Yes that is indeed impeccable conservatism.
Common Sense, I would think that principled conservatives wouldn’t go along with something so radical as to dumb down the Founders’ notion of “high crimes and misdemeanors” to now mean “lying to somebody important about bj,” something that, presumably, other Presidents have done in the past without bringing our Republic to its knees [insert fifth-grader’s joke here].

Always good advice when looking for good ethnic food — follow the people who look like they might actually come from the place that the cuisine hails from.
Mr. Mama, yes, that is a reasonably safe rule of thumb.
Now, the converse shouldn’t be necessarily true—I think *any* ethnic group can master and/or appreciate *any* kind of cuisine. Or credibly play/become-fans-of any kind of music, for that (semi-related) matter.
But I admit I get a little nervous if I’m in an Indian joint for the first time, and the only elegantly-accented English I’m hearing is from the hired staff.

joseph – I learned to cook a lot of things that way. Depending on where the recipe comes from (oddly enough, if it is from my grandmother it is more likely to have actual measurements than from my dad or granddad) depends on what type of measurements it has. And then there are the “secret” family recipes that we don’t share with anyone. I remember when I was about 15 or 16, my grandparents had “retired” (meaning they sold their restaurant and bought a country store with a diner that only served breakfast and lunch) and there were a lot of Hispanics that came in from the mills around for their lunch. Well, apparently, one of them got tired of my granddad doing an “injustice” to chili, so he stopped by one Saturday and taught us how to make chili. After that, we had to have one pot of chili for the Americans and one for the Hispanics cause it was just about hot enough to melt the pot we cooked it in. I forgot that recipe when I went to college, as I didn’t see much point in remembering how to cook something I couldn’t hardly breath around, but then my granddad made it for the family (with about 1/3 of the peppers) and it was really good.

Yep. That stranger in a strange land and having the munchies…but with a little sense of adventure you can get some good eats. The name can tell you a lot…best barbecue I ever had was at this roadside tumble down place on 78 outside Kansas, Alabama…And the best Chinese? A railroad workers cafe in Dublin, Ireland…had to admit though that the side order of chips was a bit of an eye-brow raiser…!
Treating the wait staff with a little respect helps…when we were in college up in the Northwest we heard that a Cajun Place (this was before it was chic) had opened in Seattle. We took off down there and went. It was a bit ferny which should have told us something, but, well, homesick is homesick. We ordered, the meal came and try as we might, we just couldn’t choke the bland stuff down. The waiter came and asked if “there was a problem…” Unmentionable, ever the gentleman, says, “well, forgive us, but it’s a bit mild.” “Where y’all from?” We told him, he shook his head, “L-rd how could you eat as much as you did! You should have said so. Hold on.” He came back with plates of what the owners had in the kitchen for the natives! Good eats!

Actually not true……….. The mid terms never have the same percentage of the electorate come out as the general.
The Republicans did a great job of capitalizing on the economy and no Obama on the ticket………..
There will be significantly more voters in November than in 2012. Doesn’t automatically equate to an Obama win, however the electorate make up this November will not be the same as in 2010.

How is what Jay’s doing considered “wrong”? Open primary means O-P-E-N. In Georgia, if you register as an independent, your primary does not exist. Midori–I would say the top priority now is to get the budget back under control. In case you haven’t been tracking, we’re heading toward a Greece-type financial implosion. Can’t check the video right now, but the name doesn’t offend me at all. If someone wants to associate themself as being European-American and supporting someone in a party that appears to hate Europe, that’s all on them.

Timbo,
You obviously have no understanding about State Politics. If you had read the site you posted, you would understand more, hopefully.
Carrying a weapon and/or loosening restrictions on what is or is not reasonable force is a serious thing and needs to be debated and not rushed through the legal machine. You wouldn’t want any Tom, Dick, or Harry deciding that, because you accidentally bumped into them, that you are a viable threat and therefore have the right to blow you away, now would you?

OK Normal, I am going to go nice and slow for you here. The point of the article is….
THE DEMOCRATS LEFT THE CAPITOL
Instead of doing their jobs that they were elected to do, they decided that the best course of action is to run.
And Becky, you are such a mental midget. You can not argue the facts, so you make a asinine statement to cover up your ignorance. Maybe you DO need to stay out of the kitchen.

Liberals sure are funny! Can you feel their jitters? Mitt is polled over their Annointed One and he has gained tremendous momentum in the conservative arena. Liberals sure are funny! They continuously lambast the Tea Party when it is their OWS that is causing death and destruction. Now they are not so much funny–they’re criminals.

I am a DEM, but assuming Romney holds on to win the nomination, I think he’s got a real shot to beat Obama. I think the electorate will forget a lot of what went on in the primaries and view Romey as a moderate…..

Fred,
Why are you hung up on this? Do you have a point to make? Could it be that Neal Boortz just happened to see the same video I did last night, and also make a comment on it? Am I not allowed to do that? Do I now have to listen to Neal for 3 hours every day and check his web site before posting anything? I didn’t hear what Neal said, but the article was pretty good, except he didn’t mention that Detroit is falling down while Barry and his UAW union thugs are celebrating.
I feel sorry for your daughter, I hope she seeks some help later on in life.

The Republicans’ Biggest Problem:
Keeping millions out of work to put ONE MAN OUT OF A JOB.
They HATE Obama more than they LOVE America.
All they had to do is RUN on the issues (jobs, economy, manufactuing, etc.).
They GOT EXTREMELY FANATICAL and lost their MINDS.

Republicans,
Can you explain to me how the Republicans are keeping people out of work? Last time I checked, when a Republican was in the White House, the unemployment wasn’t even close to what it is with a democrat in the White House.
And also, could you list the lies for us.

Media Elite – The leftist main stream media (CNN, ABC, NBS, CBS) that covers for Obama. When gas was $2.50 a gallon, it was all Bush’s fault. They also failed to mention Tony Rezko, Bill Ayers, and Jeremiah Wright.
Take back our country – Stop apologizing to our enemies, deficit control/reduction, put us back to work, seek our own natural resources instead of depending on our enemies, support our allies when they need us, support small businesses instead of creating more regulations.

Media elite – A psuedo newspaper or news broadcasting companies who have controlled the media from its inception and have such flagrant biased reporting that truth has no value.
take back our country – A motivation to remove liberal socialist from political offices before they can impose Eurpean socialist values and form a collective that dictates free enterprise and personnel responsibility is not the soul of America.
