Romney’s victories much-needed on several counts

Mitt Romney won Arizona easily and took his native Michigan by just three percentage points, but in the end he did take it. That’s good news for the Romney campaign, good news for the Republican Party and good news for the United States of America.

It helps no one to have one of our major political parties take a headlong plunge into fanaticism and willful ignorance. That’s what the nomination of either Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum would represent. And while Romney’s pandering makes him a less than stalwart champion against those tendencies, under the circumstances he’ll have to do.

David Brooks described the GOP nominating process well the other day, writing:

” … we’ve had a primary campaign that isn’t really an argument about issues. It’s a series of heresy trials in which each of the candidates accuses the others of tribal impurity. Two kinds of candidates emerge from this process: first, those who are forceful but outside the mainstream; second, those who started out mainstream but look weak and unprincipled because they have spent so much time genuflecting before those who despise them.”

Romney is clearly the second type of candidate. And the sad thing is, should the former Massachusetts governor go on to win the nomination but lose the general election, his defeat will be cited by many as confirmation that the Republican Party loses when it chooses moderation. What ought to serve as a warning sign about the political perils of extremism will instead be interpreted as a validation of extremism.

Over at Redstate.com, conservatives are making that argument already, predicting a Romney loss this fall and taking solace that “at least we can be rid of him and, hopefully, his most ardent cheerleaders on November 7th.”

Yesterday, Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine announced her retirement, stripping the GOP and the country of one of the last remaining moderate voices in the party, a voice that in truth had already been all but silenced. Robert Bennett of Utah has already been purged. Another of the endangered, Republican icon Richard Lugar, is fighting for his political life in Indiana against a primary challenge. As John Danforth, a former senator and himself a symbol of a wiser, saner GOP, warned last fall:

“If Dick Lugar, having served five terms in the U.S. Senate and being the most respected person in the Senate and the leading authority on foreign policy, is seriously challenged by anybody in the Republican Party, we have gone so far overboard that we are beyond redemption.”

The forces within the party that feed on RINO meat have gotten so desperate for prey that they have turned on Orrin Hatch of Utah, a man whose conservative credentials were once considered impeccable. At this point, Hatch’s future rides on the outcome of party caucuses on March 15, and may have to survive a primary challenge after that.

It’s hard to know where all this leads, but the sense continues to grow that we’re building toward something noted in the history books as an important political turning point. I do know that when the circus comes to town on March 6, the Georgia primary, I’m picking up a Republican ballot and voting for MItt.

In your heart, you know that’s right.

– Jay Bookman

Some things just never change. I know you think I’ve said some outlandish things but this “Blackish” thing is just too much. I am an Obama voter, believe it or not. Wife’s making Char Siu (Chinese sweet bbq pork) tomorrow. We have some thin, thin sliced pork loin — it’s going to get marinated in the sauce for about a day, and then I don’t know what her plan is. I think the pork’s too thin to be roasted, but I don’t know how the sauce would hold up to braising or pan-frying. No matter tho; she’ll surprise me like she always does. She messes up a meal maybe one time out of a hundred, and even then, it’s still well worth eating. :)

Oh, yes, and garlic sticky rice. She also claims to have a new method for getting some chipotle flavor into the rice, so we shall see how that turns out.

Reagan is the last true conservative to have won the presidency in recent history. You remember him, that guy that took 49 our of 50 states. The Republican establishment hated him, called him a B grade actor that ought to go back to Hollywood. The true liberal base also hated him for many reasons. But the true test was in the electorate…. they loved the guy, couldn’t get enough him as soon as he got the kinks out during his first term. The Republican establishment doesn’t want another Reagan….. to much of a threat to the status quo. Just like they don’t want a Newt or a Santorum. Jeb Bush? Possible attempt by the establishment base to thrown in a “acceptable” alternative to Romney. I think that the liberals feel, despite all of their bluster, that Bozo faces a real uphill battle for re-election. And people like Bookman in his proclamation that Romney is “much-needed” is testimony to that fact. Anyone but a true conservative…..

So now Boehner has got to double down and build more fences and dig more ditches while their brain-trust awaits the emergence of a messianic candidate — a Captain America type whose political position is just to the right of Atilla the Hun.

For the record, I’ve served on a coupla civil case juries. Both very enlightening experiences; the first, we deliberated for just about as long as the trial had proceeded, and for the second, we only deliberated for a half hour and were told the parties had agreed to a settlement and we could all go home.

I imagine based on what I’ve heard from those I know who’ve served on criminal trials, that these are much more emotionally draining.

I’m not going to say where I went to school for any of my degrees, but every college town in the South seems to have a place like that. Ours was a little country place out in the sticks that served all you could eat for abour $6.50, including tax, three meals a day. The family that ran it also ran a supermarket, so they took advantage of their bulk supermarket pricing to hold their restaurant prices down. I turned my fraternity brothers on to the place and they enthusiastically patronized the joint after that.

We also had a little ice cream parlor just off campus with cheap, cheap prices. Homemade vanilla or chocolate ice cream sammiches for just a quarter, or any two for 40 cents. Of course, that was over 30 years ago, so I don’t expect they’re still selling at that price.

Interesting post. I don’t think it matters who is in WH or Congress since nothing will change until we get the cronyism, insider trading, lawlessness, and non-taxpayer campaign finance out of the picture. Either the spineless wonder will keep WH by making more promises he can’t keep relative to government reform et al or Romney will take WH by making promises relative to same plus tax policy he can’t keep. Help me understand how things can possibly change either way?

(ir) and USinUK: it’s this : http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/mojo-marinated-pork-recipe/index.html

(bobby flay’s recipe) changed as follows:

Okay, I seem to remember I didn’t buy a bunch of citrus and juice it (would’ve done so when I lived in Florida ’cause they practically give the stuff away) – probably used Florida Naturals not from concentrate. And a frozen lime juice, no sucrose, reconstituted.

I tried it a couple of ways (marinate in just oil and oregano or with the orange juice reduction) then found his Throwdown cookbook, which didn’t clarify. So I settled on this.

I concentrated on working the garlic into the slashes but didn’t worry about where else it went. It’s not like recipes where you insert a garlic slice into a slit.

After rubbing the pork with the olive oil and 1/4C oregano (I used a pork butt, not the shoulder, and didn’t trim the excess fat ’cause there isn’t much external excess) I added the other oregano into the orange juice/lime juice mix, got a gallon or two gallon ziploc bag and put the pork in that and poured in the orange juice/lime juice mixture that’d been reduced. and let it marinate the max time.

Then I used that marinade to baste it.

Not many people thought the plantains were worth the effort. You can find some pretty good fried plantains in the frozen section of a lot of markets that are good and more consistent then the fresh ones.

The dipping sauce got mixed reviews. Try it and see what you think.

Also, cook at 250 covered for 8-10 hours.

Not really Bro, there is a lot to be said for that theory. Sure the Russians were weakened by Afghanistan (something maybe W should have learned from), but that’s not just it. They had spent and spent on the cold war theory that their massed armor attacks would sweep away our military if need be in Europe. Then the first Gulf war came and they saw first hand how ineffective both their tactics AND their equipment was against us despite the fact they had bankrupted themselves providing it.

“that same guy who brought down the Berlin wall and the Soviet Union”

I love how you Reagan fans seem to think that the Soviet Union was an economic juggernaut ready to take over the world in 1981. While Reagan does deserve credit, the reality is that they were already in financial poo poo and Reagan assisted in exhilarating the inevitable. But he does deserve credit.

“the greatest financial recovery and boom that his nation has ever seen.”

If you think that the WH is the main catalyst for the economy, would you like to compare Reagan and Clinton’s numbers? For that matter even with the current economy, I will compare the DOW, S&P, job growth, GDP growth, income increases realized within the lower and middle classes over the last 50 or 60 yrs if you like……

Of course, the WH plays only a part in the economy, but if you want to play the R and D game when it comes to the economy…………… Let me know

You misread my post. I wasn’t accusing Butch of that. I was trying to explain to him that it is almost futile to try to correct the vast revisions that have been made in American History over the past 30 years.

(and, no, they do NOT know how to do barbecue here in the UK … they slap a few sausages on the grill and call it barbecue … talk about WRONG)

Yet their score before that was a perfect 100%? The “health inspection” is much like an OSHA inspection, you piss off the inspector (read, don’t majorly kiss their ass) and you are screwed. Funny how I can find no follow up score…………

USinUK — “visit Wing Yip – any given day, you’re in the minority in that restaurant and the food is outrageously good … and reasonable!”

Always good advice when looking for good ethnic food — follow the people who look like they might actually come from the place that the cuisine hails from. They’ll know what’s good. :)

Fred-all newly opened restaurants begin with a perfect score of 100. Personally, I will not patronize any eatery with an inspection below 90.

US in UK:
People not from the south, think BBQ means cook out,
And that’s something they’re wrong about.

BBQ is NOT a verb, and BBQ is NOT a grill. BBQ is MEAT prepared in a very special way.

Common Sense

“Orrin Hatch? The same guy that went against the wishes of his constituents and voted against the impeachment of Clinton?

Yes that is indeed impeccable conservatism.”

This from the party that assailed Pres Clinton for polling before he decided what to do?

If you get into the opposing arguments – “Representatives are elected to go to Washington and work for what they see as best” vs “Representatives are bound by their constituency on every vote and need to constantly ask them what to do” I think you’ll be surprised. Especially in light of the thoughts of Founding Fathers and constitutional scholars.

Given what my dad does for a living (Professor of Agriculture, PhD in Microbiology), it was drilled into my head from a young age not to mess around with food safety. My dad’s pretty anal about it, but one habit I’ve picked up from him is to not give a bad rating a second chance.

That said, I can drop in on the place and see what their *current* rating is. As I said, I know right where it is, and it’s barely even out of my way. Shall I check in on them?

josef – Thanks for the advice, but I’m too stubborn to do anything the “easy” way the first time. I grew up in a restaurant, and started doing prep work for my dad and granddad when I was about 7 or 8, so I’m pretty comfortable in the kitchen.

“The same guy that went against the wishes of his constituents ”

Elected officials are not there to rubber-stamp the “wishes” of their constituents. It’s up to the voters to vote for someone who agrees with them, but even then, the politician is not obligated to do so.

St Simon’s

The in resident Cherokee says he’ll meet ya there for “peace talks!”

And to the rest of us, “Aw, what do y’all u-ne-ga know from barbecue….the only contribution y’all ever made was the swine…thanks, though,,,some good eats…”

******
As for “good Chinese…” Rule of thumb, get to know the owner. We used to have a great place around here, the Rice Bowl. The guy who owned it appreciated his regulars. Went one night and he met us at the door, “oh, no, you don’t want to eat here today. Bad cook. Firing him at the end of the shift.” Right behind us was an unknown, uppity Buckhead yuppie couple, “come on in, come on in…”

Fred — “BBQ is NOT a verb, and BBQ is NOT a grill. BBQ is MEAT prepared in a very special way.”

There is, in fact, a USDA definition of barbecue, which describes it as a method of slowly cooking meat over hot wood coals in order to impart smoke flavor to the meat and to caramelize sugars that are present in sauces or marinades used on the meat.

The things you learn, being an Ag professor’s kid. :)

I’m of the Paula Dean school…nothing wrong with a can of mushroom soup!

Having grown up leaning to cook from grannies in the kitchen, I’m a pinch of this and a dash of that kind of person.

The key ingredient, though, is love…I don’t care what the ingredients are, what the recipe is or how good the cook is, the mood will determine the outcome…

JHM: Swing by and see what you find on the door. As someone who has been in a place getting inspected, (and I wasn’t working there OR friends with the owner) I was shocked by the high handed bullying of the “inspector.” I have BIG ears. At the end, the “failing score” and inspection sheet disappeared for what looked to me to be about 100 bucks.

I haven’t paid much attention to the inspections since then………..
