Romney’s victories much-needed on several counts

Mitt Romney won Arizona easily and took his native Michigan by just three percentage points, but in the end he did take it. That’s good news for the Romney campaign, good news for the Republican Party and good news for the United States of America.

It helps no one to have one of our major political parties take a headlong plunge into fanaticism and willful ignorance. That’s what the nomination of either Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum would represent. And while Romney’s pandering makes him a less than stalwart champion against those tendencies, under the circumstances he’ll have to do.

David Brooks described the GOP nominating process well the other day, writing:

” … we’ve had a primary campaign that isn’t really an argument about issues. It’s a series of heresy trials in which each of the candidates accuses the others of tribal impurity. Two kinds of candidates emerge from this process: first, those who are forceful but outside the mainstream; second, those who started out mainstream but look weak and unprincipled because they have spent so much time genuflecting before those who despise them.”

Romney is clearly the second type of candidate. And the sad thing is, should the former Massachusetts governor go on to win the nomination but lose the general election, his defeat will be cited by many as confirmation that the Republican Party loses when it chooses moderation. What ought to serve as a warning sign about the political perils of extremism will instead be interpreted as a validation of extremism.

Over at Redstate.com, conservatives are making that argument already, predicting a Romney loss this fall and taking solace that “at least we can be rid of him and, hopefully, his most ardent cheerleaders on November 7th.”

Yesterday, Sen. Olympia Snowe of Maine announced her retirement, stripping the GOP and the country of one of the last remaining moderate voices in the party, a voice that in truth had already been all but silenced. Robert Bennett of Utah has already been purged. Another of the endangered, Republican icon Richard Lugar, is fighting for his political life in Indiana against a primary challenge. As John Danforth, a former senator and himself a symbol of a wiser, saner GOP, warned last fall:

“If Dick Lugar, having served five terms in the U.S. Senate and being the most respected person in the Senate and the leading authority on foreign policy, is seriously challenged by anybody in the Republican Party, we have gone so far overboard that we are beyond redemption.”

The forces within the party that feed on RINO meat have gotten so desperate for prey that they have turned on Orrin Hatch of Utah, a man whose conservative credentials were once considered impeccable. At this point, Hatch’s future rides on the outcome of party caucuses on March 15, and may have to survive a primary challenge after that.

It’s hard to know where all this leads, but the sense continues to grow that we’re building toward something noted in the history books as an important political turning point. I do know that when the circus comes to town on March 6, the Georgia primary, I’m picking up a Republican ballot and voting for MItt.

In your heart, you know that’s right.

Speaking of killing and letting God sort them out…. I am sure all those death penalty fanatics are proud that Alabama is about to put to death a man after refusing to test the DNA that is part of the evidence (at no cost to the state) to determine conclusively if he is truly guilty. Apparently it is better to kill the man and save the “process” than to permit DNA evidence to possibly show his innocence.

But hey, remember how life is sacred! That is why Alabama has also toyed with the vaginal probe rape of its women at the same time.

Death penalty being discussed. How did the board get there. Have not read all the comments to find out.
Don’t see any reason Georgia should have the death penalty. Too many innocent people have be convicted and executed. We can keep people in prison and if they are found to be innocent they can be released. No excuse to do otherwise.
Other arguments are the total cost of trying a death case, and the facts that in comparing murder rates with states that don’t have the death penatly, their rates are no higher that the states that do.
Time for it to be abolished in Georgia.

Republicans’ war on common sense

(CNN) — In politics, we’re all used to seeing various “cards” being played to fire up voters and gain the upper hand.

The most popular is the “race card,” but there are others in the deck, such as the “Jesus card,” the “gender card” and the “immigration card.”

But Newt Gingrich took the card game to a whole new level this past weekend when he whipped out the hardly used, rarely seen “George Washington card.”

That’s the problem with Gingrich and the other GOP challengers. It seems they have mistaken their base’s fervor to defeat Obama for a fervor to hear them pander.

Remember Gingrich’s moon base speech while he was campaigning near NASA? Or Mitt Romney quoting “America the Beautiful” while in Iowa, saying: “If you count corn as an amber wave of grain, why, you have them right here. What a wonderful place this is.”

Seriously, who says that?

The GOP’s once credible attacks on the president’s record have morphed into an incredible attack on the country’s intelligence.

St. Simons – Coming up on 9 years in Atlanta, and I’ve never been to the Varsity. How sad is that?

Served as an alternate juror a few years ago on an armed robbery case. Guy was obviously guilty but some of the juors would not convict or even discuss the facts of the case. Jurors differ greatly in their opinions as to how much proof is needed to convict. Not a perfect system by any means.

“Romney’s victories much-needed on several counts”….. much need by whom? Certainly not by anyone but the Republican establishment and the limousine liberals inside the beltway who are not all too happy with Romney. Santorum and Newt represent more of a threat to Liberalville but are feared by the Robert Doles and the John McCains of the system……. all of the limousine liberals out there just feel that Romney will be Bozo lite and doesn’t represent much of a threat to the status quo, that is, keeping your job appearing to represent your constituency….. you know, all of that Constitutional stuff. Most of them don’t ruffle many feathers….. that might look like they have an opinion about something. Meanwhile, the average voter is “happy” with the selection of anyone who can stop this freight train into disaster that Bozo represents. Happy and satisfied have several definitions…. depends on who you are talking to.

“Funny that Liberals will work with Moderate Republicans but Republicans won’t work with Moderate Liberals.”

So not true there has been tons of work, especially on the medicare front with Ron Wyden.

They’re not gonna use any tax cuts. The new GOP thing is to make federal workes pay for it.

WRONG answer to the WRONG question, Joseph.

Think about it, you’ll figure it out.

(Giveaway hint, it has something to do with approval ratings. Duh.)

Been going to the Varsity since 1955. Love the food. Where do you go to get your supple of grease. Known fact that you need some in your diet to keep your joints moving.

Okay, I have to write that one down. I’ll put it in my scrapbook next to Newts accusation that New Yorkers are elites that live in high rises and ride the subway. :)

Snowe and Lugar have despicable RINO records so WE THE PEOPLE say good riddance.

Now, with the honorable Willard “Mitt” Romney’s victories, it looks like He will most likely capture the GOP nomination. With that fact clearly laid out here on this lefty blog, it is without question that there WILL BE UNITY in Governor Romney’s quest towards the Oval Office.

Do not listen to the far left liberal media which is desperately trying to tell everyone that we are not getting along in the rightful Republican Party. WRONG! WE ARE UNITED! You will see how well orgazined WE are at the convention.

Amen,
Bill

I dissapprove of the way Congress is doing its job… That certainly don’t mean I would be stupid enough to vote for a dem. Voters still trust Republicans more than dems to be in control of Congress… Its that simple…. You’ll figure it out…..

Oscar – Typically, I go home to get my supply of grease. Or Fellini’s. It isn’t my joints that get greased when I eat at places like that though, which is why I don’t eat at places like that very often.

I got it. Instead of the death penalty by electric chair or injection, only feed them chili dogs and fries from the Varsity. Won’t last out the year.

“It’s hard to know where all this leads, but the sense continues to grow that we’re building toward something noted in the history books as an important political turning point. ”

A turning point… as in an aircraft carrier making a 180-degree turn. Takes a long time and churns a lot of water along the way. I’m still betting the “cited by many as confirmation that the Republican Party loses when it chooses moderation. What ought to serve as a warning sign about the political perils of extremism will instead be interpreted as a validation of extremism” crowd will hold influence for the next while.

“Shoot, Bro, Republicans can’t even bring themselves to work with moderate Republicans”

Because in their minds, ‘moderate Republican’ is an oxymoron, a denigration of purity. Look at this blog. Bloggers who for a long, long time have taken relatively moderate positions are assailed by the Republican Right with the ultimate epithet: ‘you’re a Democrat!! You’re a liberal!!!! You…. love Obama!!!!”

When saner minds pick up the pieces of the Party, I’m guessing one of the first things they do is support legislation for voluntary end of life in extreme medical circumstances. Watching this slow, agonizing death wreaking havoc on everything around it is almost too much to bear.

I can easily beat that. I’ve been here close to 45 years and never been there.
