U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, Republican of Maine, has just dropped a bombshell: She will not be running for re-election later this year.
From her announcement:
“As I have long said, what motivates me is producing results for those who have entrusted me to be their voice and their champion, and I am filled with that same sense of responsibility today as I was on my first day in the Maine House of Representatives. I do find it frustrating, however, that an atmosphere of polarization and ‘my way or the highway’ ideologies has become pervasive in campaigns and in our governing institutions.
“With my Spartan ancestry I am a fighter at heart; and I am well prepared for the electoral battle, so that is not the issue. However, what I have had to consider is how productive an additional term would be. Unfortunately, I do not realistically expect the partisanship of recent years in the Senate to change over the short term. So at this stage of my tenure in public service, I have concluded that I am not prepared to commit myself to an additional six years in the Senate, which is what a fourth term would entail.
“As I enter a new chapter, I see a vital need for the political center in order for our democracy to flourish and to find solutions that unite rather than divide us. It is time for change in the way we govern, and I believe there are unique opportunities to build support for that change from outside the United States Senate. I intend to help give voice to my fellow citizens who believe, as I do, that we must return to an era of civility in government driven by a common purpose to fulfill the promise that is unique to America.”
Her announcement is certain to set off another round of partisan sniping about which side is more to blame for creating all the partisan sniping.
In terms of raw politics, though, the decision has to be seen as an advantage for the Democrats. They had little shot at unseating Snowe as an incumbent; an open seat becomes a lot more vulnerable.
As Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight just tweeted, “We had estimated GOP’s chances of holding Maine senate at 85% before. Maybe 20-30% now after Snowe retirement.”

It sure looks like Little Rickie Sanitarium is going to win Michigan tonight. After that, Romney will . . .
Will he drop out? Nah! He’s got to much money. Little Rickie Sanitarium will vacuum up the Tea Potty, nut-case, far Right wackos. And, they will sail merrily into November only to crash on the rocks of Obama shoal.
The rabid, foaming-at-the-mouth, nutcases will get their wish — a far Right nut-case wacko to represent their far Right wackiness. And, then they will be done for decades.
Tonight, friends, we are witnessing the decline and marginalization of the Republican Party. It began with the nut-case Tea Potty and continued with the Southern nut-cases.
The sad truth is that they are so far outside of mainstream America, that they may never return to viability.

Jay:
Unfortunately the Republican Party has far too few Senator Snows. I wouldn’t vote for her but, Senator Snow has been, for much of her political career, willing to work with Democrats for the good of the country, and occasionally willing to compromise. Having said this, she has voted with Republicans in the Senate during President Obama’s first term more than she should have. The Republican has become too extreme, and others like Snow will leave as well, voluntarily or via the votes of a Republican electorate growing more narrow-minded and extreme.

Jm .. .. Even IF Romney wins the republican nomination, I have finally come to believe he can’t beat Obama. He’s flopped up & down and all around more than a North Ga. trout stuck on land. He’s bashing the auto bailout, which would be okay if they were doing horrible. His own health care law in his home state. He does ok during debates, but not all that great.
Obama is too young. If he were to lose, he’s not going anywhere. He’d just run again and may win. By 2016-2220 I will be older and my ticker may conk out if Obama is in there during that time. I say just get his term(s) over with and look to 2016.
On a side note, anyone who would vote for Santorum – and apparently there are quite a few, freaks me out. I would much rather have Obama than Santorum – that hurts to say. Gingrich, Paul .. .. jokes.

If some of you had stayed awake in history class you would know that Thomas Jefferson was a Republican. The other party was the Federalist.
Every day blessings are showered on me by the brilliant economic policies of The Messiah that has produced our robust and flourishing economy with full employment and a booming housing market. For instance, in my checking account through frugality and Spartan living I have a grand total of $ 32,000. Last month I got 25 cents as the interest on that account. Since a stamp cost 40 something cents I can’t even write The Bearer of Light to thank him for the big 25 cents. Just think, if I get my savings up to $ 96,000 I’ll get a whole buck.
So there is no snow in Maine? I’ve been there. There’s plenty of snow. You think us hillybillies are xenophobic you ought to see those people. Either you’re from Maine or you are from Away.
