Imagine the aftermath of a Romney loss in Michigan

If Mitt Romney loses Michigan tonight — and the polls say that’s possible — you’re gonna see some stuff happen. The Republican Party is gonna look like the scene in “Titanic” when people finally begin to understand: This unsinkable sucker could really go down.

film_7w_nightremember

The band warms up the crowd for Mitt Romney's Michigan concession speech?

Such a defeat would not end Romney’s campaign — he has too many resources and too much organization to simply sink beneath the waters. But a loss in his native state would confirm to many of his fellow Republicans that an alternative must be found, and quickly. For Romney, the setback would be significant because it would damage the single most important asset that he possesses, which is credibility. Mr. Inevitable would look more and more like Mr. Inevitable Loser.

But what alternatives do the Republicans have? Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum are far more problematic than Romney. I’m beginning to hear strange noises out of Florida, as if Jeb Bush were starting to stir a bit, but that’s still a longshot. On the other hand, if Romney loses Michigan, those noises may increase in volume pretty quickly.

Truthfully, though, it’s still hard to envision the mechanism by which a late entry seizes control of the race. Those who have been campaigning all along aren’t going to meekly set aside their ambitions and allow some white knight to ride in and seize the prize.

And should Romney win in Michigan? Victory won’t do a lot for him, because it’s a state that he’s supposed to win pretty handily, against a set of opponents whom he ought to thrash. In college basketball terms, you don’t get many RPI points for beating weak opponents on your home court. A Romney win in Michigan, twinned with an expected win in Arizona, would merely extend the party’s current unsettled state of affairs.

I think a better question would be – what if he DOES win, but it’s only a single-digit margin … and if that margin is squeaky close …

that doesn’t exactly engender a whole lotta faith, either

I’m curious as to how the vote will be counted.

Like the Iowa caucus perhaps?

Will they leave entire counties out of the totals?

Will we see Republican Primary

If Mitt wins can we be sure he really won?

No one else is getting in the race. The powers that be are going too watch this play out and recognize if santorum wins the primary battle, then they have virtually no chance of winning. Santorum will get crushed because he has no fundraising ability for the general.

Top Republicans will let conservatives wake up to what they’ve done if mitt loses, prepare ardently for 2016, and focus on winning the senate.

George W. Bush will probably go down in history as our worst President. When he left office, the chances another Bush would run were about zero. It’s a sign of just how bad the Republican Party has become when Jeb Bush starts to look good. Actually, I still think Chris Christie is their best bet.

Steve USA – How are the gas prices looking today?

They’ll probably go higher if the Keystone is built. Gotta love Free Trade!

“TransCanada Corp. estimates the pipeline would boost sales of Canadian-produced crude by $2 billion to $4 billion a year, according to an assessment submitted to Canada’s National Energy Board.

“The prices for those crudes in North Dakota and Canada will fetch closer to Gulf Coast prices, which are tied into the higher international market price,” said Tim Hess, an Energy Department analyst.

The reason is fairly simple. Even at maximum capacity, the Keystone line will move some 400,000 barrels per day of crude from Canada and the Midwest to global oil market. With the transportation discount removed, those barrels likely will be repriced to the higher global benchmark. “

As to complaints about Democrats crossing over to vote for Santorum, Romney has no grounds on which to complain, since he has bragged a while back about doing the same himself:

Republican presidential candididate Mitt Romney offered a new explanation today for why he supported a Democrat in 1992.

That year, Romney, then a registered independent, voted for former Sen. Paul Tsongas in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary. He told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, in an interview that will air Sunday on “This Week,” that his vote was meant as a tactical maneuver aimed at finding the weakest opponent for incumbent President George H.W. Bush.

“In Massachusetts, if you register as an independent, you can vote in either the Republican or Democratic primary,” said Romney, who until he made an unsuccessful run for Senate in 1994 had spent his adult life as a registered independent. “When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I’d vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for the Republican.”

Personally, I suspect that’s a story fabricated to give Romney cover for voting in the Dem primary. But he’s on the record as supporting and even participating in the practice, so grumbling about it now is — shocker alert!! — hypocritical.

And as for the low unemployment rate, would you care to show us how many jobs, i.e. construction workers, lending agents, real estate brokers, underwriters, mortgage sales, closing attorneys, etc…… at that time were tied to the aforementiond housing bubble?

“The reason is fairly simple. Even at maximum capacity, the Keystone line will move some 400,000 barrels per day of crude from Canada and the Midwest to global oil market. With the transportation discount removed, those barrels likely will be repriced to the higher global benchmark. “

That’s the part of this I don’t get, because there are no refineries in North Dakota. The oil is going to the global market either way.

Re: the USA Today poll, Affordable Care Act.

As is typical with many polls, I’d suspect people don’t know that much about ACA. Get specific with “if your wife gets breast cancer, do you want the insurance company to have the right to cancel your policy?” and I doubt the answer would be a resounding ‘yes!’

But more to the point: My Congressman, Rep (Dr.) Michael Burgess, is chairman of the House Healthcare Caucus and a critic, not of health care reform, but of aspects of the ACA. Listen to this 2-minute video. Notice how, at the one-minute mark, he says if the Supreme Court finds the individual mandate unconstitutional, other insurance reforms must follow or health care costs will spiral out of control and we need something to take its place.

In other words, JohnnyReb, what Republican Congressional Leaders and presidential candidates say to fire up the base and defeat Pres Obama is one thing. What they do quietly, behind the scenes, is pretty much the opposite.

I’m smart enough to realize that all the intelligence reports aren’t being made public, but one has to assume that they wouldn’t make those reports public if they were sure that Iran wanted to produce a weapons program. If Iran is just building nuclear power plants then what is the big deal? Does Cuba, Mexico or Canada have the right to attack us in here in Georgia because we’re building a new nuclear reactor?

godless heathen -”The oil is going to the global market either way.”

Exactly! Since the U.S. has no control over the global market, there is no way that the POTUS can control the prices in order to affect a reduction in the cost of fuel. Moving the oil from point A to point B is simply transportation not pricing. The pipeline will allow the Canadians to move the crude to the coastal refineries where it will then be sold on the world market at market prices. There is no stipulation that the oil transported across the U.S. gets to STAY in the U.S. The only way to guarantee that it does, is to nationalize the industry, giving the U.S. direct control of all domestic oil supplies. Anything else is just smoke and mirrors.

The oil refineries in the west/midwest can process the West Texas and Canadian Crude. Other refineries are from an earlier generation that can only process the sweet crude and many of those refineries have shut down because of margin squeeze and the resulting inability to make a profit. Once gas prices are high enough perhaps more refineries will be built that can process the less desireable but cheaper crude.

Here’s a little insight to the “Glory Days” of the Bush Administratin in regard to Thulsa Dooms ascertion that things were hunky dorey during Bushs middle years:

How did it get so bad?
Greed. The American economy is built on credit. Credit is a great tool when used wisely. For instance, credit can be used to start or expand a business, which can create jobs. It can also be used to purchase large ticket items such as houses or cars. Again, more jobs are created and people’s needs are satisfied. But in the last decade, credit went unchecked in our country, and it got out of control.

Mortgage brokers, acting only as middle men, determined who got loans, then passed on the responsibility for those loans on to others in the form of mortgage backed assets (after taking a fee for themselves originating the loan). Exotic and risky mortgages became commonplace and the brokers who approved these loans absolved themselves of responsibility by packaging these bad mortgages with other mortgages and reselling them as “investments.”

Thousands of people took out loans larger than they could afford in the hopes that they could either flip the house for profit or refinance later at a lower rate and with more equity in their home – which they would then leverage to purchase another “investment” house.

A lot of people got rich quickly and people wanted more. Before long, all you needed to buy a house was a pulse and your word that you could afford the mortgage. Brokers had no reason not to sell you a home. They made a cut on the sale, then packaged the mortgage with a group of other mortgages and erased all personal responsibility of the loan. But many of these mortgage backed assets were ticking time bombs. And they just went off.

The housing market declined
The housing slump set off a chain reaction in our economy. Individuals and investors could no longer flip their homes for a quick profit, adjustable rates mortgages adjusted skyward and mortgages no longer became affordable for many homeowners, and thousands of mortgages defaulted, leaving investors and financial institutions holding the bag.

This caused massive losses in mortgage backed securities and many banks and investment firms began bleeding money. This also caused a glut of homes on the market which depressed housing prices and slowed the growth of new home building, putting thousands of home builders and laborers out of business. Depressed housing prices caused further complications as it made many homes worth much less than the mortgage value and some owners chose to simply walk away instead of pay their mortgage.

Your somewhat right in that regard. The prices will continue to fluctuate up or down in reaction to to the market. However, what the pipeline does is makes it cheaper for Canada to move the oil to the coastal refineries. Rather than pay the transportation costs of refining the product and then having it shipped to the ports for sale on the world market, they would have the ability to eliminate the “middle man” as it were and go direct. This is a definite cost saver for the company, but that savings is not being passed to the consumer. The pipeline simply makes it cheaper for the company to move the oil to the market in order to sell it at a higher price, which does nothing to help the U.S. in regard to our current fuel costs.

Not so sure about that. There’s evidence that Iran is enriching uranium to about 20%, which is way higher than you need for a conventional reactor such as a power plant. Purity of 3-5% is sufficient for that. You have to get to ~90% to have weapons-grade uranium, but my understanding is that by the time you can enrich to 40-50%, you’ve done most of the work and your research is largely complete.

I think the burden of proof is on Iran to show what it’s doing that 20% enrichment for, and if they can’t provide a scientifically plausible explanation, then the only remaining conclusion I can reach is that they’re trying to make weapons-grade HEU. If they can’t provide that explanation, then I think measures stronger than sanctions must be considered in an expeditious manner.

Yes, it’s frustrating. This game of politics is not very much fun anymore and there is so much at stake for the future of this country. I’m ok, my family will be ok, but the children, what will they be looking at in 20, 30 years? I completely disagree with modern republican philosopy and view most of their policies as dangerous to the middle class but mighty friendly to the wealthy class, as if they need any more help. It’s the same old story, ok man just kidding about you being a cinderblockhead, you’re actually more of a spirited debater with whom I disagree. At least you have the humor down…

It didn’t take us long to find Barack Obama’s original quote, which came from a videotaped interview he did with the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board very early in the presidential campaign, January 2008.

“Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket,” Obama told the Chronicle . “Coal-powered plants, you know, natural gas, you name it, whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.”

While Obama was talking specifically about cap-and-trade, he was also making a larger point that the biggest challenge will be making sure voters understand why such a plan is necessary.

Doom — “Begin the enlightenment perfesser of knowitallogy.”

By all means.

Yesterday, you said: “And quite frankly even if what media matters version of what happened even were true it would pale in comparison to John Kerry’s lies about personal knowledge of American soldiers raping, killing in a fashion reminiscent of ghengis kahn.”

http://blogs.ajc.com/jay-bookman-blog/2012/02/27/obamas-poker-instincts-on-view-in-presidency/?cp=9#comment-878895

And then you quoted Kerry, but you did so pretty creatively. Had you included the previous paragraph, it would have been clear that Kerry as not speaking from personal experience, but that he was relating what he had *heard other veterans testify to under oath back in the US.*

“I would like to talk, representing all those veterans, and say that several months ago in Detroit, we had an investigation at which over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command….”

“They told the stories at times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country.”

It’s pretty clear that Kerry’s relating what he was told by others, not things he saw or has “personal knowledge” of, as you falsely claimed. And if you want to call those claims or atrocities “lies,” then be honest and go after the persons who actually *made* those claims. You ought to be able to find their names from the Detroit proceedings Kerry spoke of. Of course, in this case, I don’t think you’re looking for the truth as much as you’re looking for a easy opportunity to slag on a Democrat you apparently don’t like.

So tell us, Doom – what “personal knowledge” did Kerry “lie” about? Inquiring minds want to know.

I read most of them and continue to do so, and so far, not a single refutation of fact. Just “Well they are left leaning” or “there’s bias” or “they used the WRONG facts.”

While there might be a small amount of merit to that last one, not a single one of these links has yet demonstrated an actual lie from Media Matters. If you have found one that you think demonstrates otherwise, you are free to share it and also free to point out the part you find relevant.

But really, I don’t know why you bother. You know I’m right, that their information IS factual and you’re just flailing and mad because you don’t want it to be true.

Such as?

DGA, I think that “about us” quote I cited @11.46 makes it clear that they do have a bias. There’s NOTHING wrong with that, but they do specifically say that they “monitor a cross section of print, broadcast, cable, radio, and Internet media outlets for CONSERVATIVE misinformation”.

They don’t claim to point out media misinformation wherever it may appear, and that’s not just to the exclusion of liberal views, but of any number of other fact-checking missions that could embark upon in the universe

Just so it’s clear….only examining one side of a story is dishonest. Spin that however you want it.

Steve, by that yardstick ANY organization that advocates on behalf of a particular orientation is “dishonest.” That’s a pretty broad definition; you’d have to say as well that (for instance) all churches are “dishonest”, all charities are “dishonest,” etc.

That is not a “bias” though, it’s simply a limited area of concentration. To me, a “bias” would be what they are FINDING, not what they are doing. There’s no law that says they HAVE to monitor both sides. Bias is SLANTING information. They identify lies and misinformation, they don’t REPORT news, so they don’t slant it.

Adam

Steve: Some day in the future you will realize the earth is round and getting biased news from the Left is as stupid as getting biased news from the Right.

You think you are on the high road but you travel on the same road as the people you claim to detest.

You know, I already get that just going to left leaning sources is a bad idea. But I am not going to go to right leaning sources either. I do not find that it balances my viewpoint at all. Instead, I am fed lies or misinformation more often, today, from the right than from the left. As far as commentary goes, I make every effort to hear politicians speak for themselves BEFORE going to any nightly news program to see what the commentary is, and certainly before going to Media Matters.

My cliche might be boring you, but here’s the thing: You know I’m right. A “debate” between people who have the facts and people who are all about how they just don’t trust or like those facts is not a debate.

I’m saying that Shep Smith is not providing commentary (built in bias and opinion: Haniity, Oreilly and the morning show on Fox is NOT news) so they do not have much to call out. The one’s they mainly call out are providing commentary sold as news.

Newsbusters does the same with Maddow and Oberman. They are giving opinion, so the chances of the entire picture being presented is slim

I can’t speak for every show or person, so I’m sure lies are told.

Company goes bankrupt:

REPUBLICAN WAY: LAWYERS GET PAID, PREFERRED STOCKHOLDERS GET PAID, STOCKHOLDERS GET PAID, CREDITORS GET PAID, WORKERS GET F’ED. THEY GET NOTHING. NO PAY FOR THE WORK THEY DI. ZERO.

the next administration will face a range of obstacles on the energy front, from plummeting oil prices and a declining economy to potential rifts among Mr. Obama’s own advisers.

In a sign of one major internal difference, Mr. Chu has called for gradually ramping up gasoline taxes over 15 years to coax consumers into buying more-efficient cars and living in neighborhoods closer to work.

“Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe,” Mr. Chu, who directs the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in September.

-Wyoming legislator David Miller (R) introduces “doomsday” bill-
Wyoming Republican state legislator David Miller has introduced a bill to prepare his state for a doomsday scenario in which the nation’s economy and social structure completely collapse.

“Things happen quickly sometimes — look at Libya, look at Egypt, look at those situations,” Miller told the Star-Tribune. “We wouldn’t have time to meet as a Legislature or even in a special session to do anything to respond.”

Mazda isn’t an American manufacturer
*******************************************************************************

Partnership with Ford Motor CompanyMazda’s financial difficulties during the 1960s resulted in a new corporate investor, Ford Motor Company. Starting in 1979 with a 7-percent financial stake, Ford began a partnership with Mazda resulting in various joint projects. During the 1980s, Ford gained another 20-percent financial stake. These included large and small efforts in all areas of the automotive landscape. This was most notable in the realm of pickup trucks (like the Mazda B-Series, which spawned a Ford Courier variant in North America in 1972) and smaller cars. For instance, Mazda’s Familia platform was used for Ford models like the Laser and Escort, while the Capella architecture found its way into Ford’s Telstar sedan and Probe sports models. In 2002 Ford gained an extra 5-percent financial stake.

JohnnyReb, if the nominee is Romney, he cannot make the argument against ObamaCare. I mean, this is the man who insisted that his official portrait as governor of Massachusetts include a copy of his health-insurance reform plan. He cannot credibly turn around and condemn Obama for following his example.

Jay–As I’m sure you’re well aware, Romney is proposing a revocation of ObamaCare from a states’ rights standpoint. Somewhat of a stretch, but at this point I don’t care what the reasoning is.

This game of politics is not very much fun anymore and there is so much at stake for the future of this country. I’m ok, my family will be ok, but the children, what will they be looking at in 20, 30 years?

Mick–As far as I’m concerned, the National Debt should be the only campaign issue coming from either side. The numbers are out of control. We can’t keep spending more than we’re bringing in. We’ve got a $38,000 budget on a $29,000 income, with $158,000 already on the credit card.

“It’s the mysterious, disappearing faith-based council,” said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, the executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, who advised the first council.

The Republicans need a charismatic candidate who is not swayed by the detestable evangelical lobby. That could be Michael Bloomberg or Marco Rubio. Chris Christie, while OK in his politics, is simply too fat. The media will ahve a field day with him, trying to make him look like Fat Albert or Fat B—–d. Ron Paul was a logical choice politically. Unfortunately, the evangelical lobby did not approve. The Republican Party heads bend over backwards to satisfy them, even though their anti-intellectual politics don’t represent conservative principles by any means.

So no, you did not make your point. For example, let’s look at what Media Matters does:

First, they state what someone said and back it up with a quoted source. Therefore, they start with a FACT that this person said this.

Then they take what was said and refute it, again with facts, by saying what other people and groups have said or done that is contrary to whatever statement they are targeting.

The WORST you can say about them is that they use buzz headlines to get you to start reading and a preamble that is “left leaning.”

So how exactly do you think your “point” even applies?

If Kerry used his service for political gain, so be it…

Bush Sr and Dole when running against Clinton ran commercials when speaking of their service.

Bush Jr accentuated his bravery of being in the Air National Garud when running sorties up and down the Gulf Coast and protecting Gulf Shores and Destin from being invaded by the Viet Cong. Heck he was so arrogant that he during the 88 or 92 convention he told a reporter that the war may have been different had he been there… You want to see the clip?

It is KERRY’s service, NOT anyone else’s. his experience and experience of those who served with and spoke to who served

Could he have embellished? sure. But you nor I were there. We do not know.
We do know that the SVBs main spokesmen went on tv to laugh about Kerry saying he was in Cambodia only for WH tapes to reveal that that same person told Nixon.. HE was in Cambodia himself. So we do know that disinformation was purposely directed at him……

Yeah, I sure do miss the days of NEGATIVE 8.2% GDP contraction. The 2.4% GDP GROWTH under Obama is just so awful….. (roll eyes).

The gop meeting after this loss to reform their primary will be fun to watch.

Their primary is just like the way they govern.

A disaster waiting to happen.

Jay, what do you think of David Brooks analysis today? Maybe Santorum should be nominated so the right-wing nuts can be beaten so badly the GOP purges itself of them and political discourse returns to the middle?

That is how I feel about it. This is what I would LOVE to have happen. So we can finally get some sanity back.

The libs are pulling for Santorum because Romney would stand a very good chance of handing Obama his eviction notice telling him to vacate the White House early next year.

Not gonna happen pal. Generically speaking, and as long as Obama is potus.

@ Recon – actually, no, the libs are pulling for Romney. See, Romney is so damaged, he can’t beat the President. Sticky Icky Santorum also can’t beat the President, but Sticky Icky is more likely to bring out conservative wackjobs, which in turn will make it less likely that the Dems regain a supermajority in the Senate and a majority in the House. With Mittens, however, conservative wackjobs stay home, thereby increasing odds of Democrat control of all 3 houses.

How do you like them apples?

Recon, of course Romney is a real threat to beat Obama. But that isn’t only reason I think Santorum would be better pick. See my prior blog. It might actually help the GOP and the country in the long run.

Just think if this were a Republican in office right now. The media and Jay would be all over the Republicans. The economy wasn’t even close to this bad, and gas prices were half what they are now when the media and Jay scorched Republicans. Now that Barry is in office, everything is okay fine. Absolutely amazing.

Thank you for confirming that you are deciding to deliberately stay insane while a Democrat is President.
