Imagine the aftermath of a Romney loss in Michigan

If Mitt Romney loses Michigan tonight — and the polls say that’s possible — you’re gonna see some stuff happen. The Republican Party is gonna look like the scene in “Titanic” when people finally begin to understand: This unsinkable sucker could really go down.

film_7w_nightremember

The band warms up the crowd for Mitt Romney's Michigan concession speech?

Such a defeat would not end Romney’s campaign — he has too many resources and too much organization to simply sink beneath the waters. But a loss in his native state would confirm to many of his fellow Republicans that an alternative must be found, and quickly. For Romney, the setback would be significant because it would damage the single most important asset that he possesses, which is credibility. Mr. Inevitable would look more and more like Mr. Inevitable Loser.

But what alternatives do the Republicans have? Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum are far more problematic than Romney. I’m beginning to hear strange noises out of Florida, as if Jeb Bush were starting to stir a bit, but that’s still a longshot. On the other hand, if Romney loses Michigan, those noises may increase in volume pretty quickly.

Truthfully, though, it’s still hard to envision the mechanism by which a late entry seizes control of the race. Those who have been campaigning all along aren’t going to meekly set aside their ambitions and allow some white knight to ride in and seize the prize.

And should Romney win in Michigan? Victory won’t do a lot for him, because it’s a state that he’s supposed to win pretty handily, against a set of opponents whom he ought to thrash. In college basketball terms, you don’t get many RPI points for beating weak opponents on your home court. A Romney win in Michigan, twinned with an expected win in Arizona, would merely extend the party’s current unsettled state of affairs.

the next administration will face a range of obstacles on the energy front, from plummeting oil prices and a declining economy to potential rifts among Mr. Obama’s own advisers.

In a sign of one major internal difference, Mr. Chu has called for gradually ramping up gasoline taxes over 15 years to coax consumers into buying more-efficient cars and living in neighborhoods closer to work.

“Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe,” Mr. Chu, who directs the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in September.

As TBS said there really isn’t that much difference between hard news on fox vs hard news on say abc. Its the pundits such as Maddow, Olberman, Oreilly, Hannity that have the skewed views and everyone kinda knows that- its self evident. There was a guy in my platoon in boot camp who was actually a Nam vet, who decided to re-up after over 15 years out of uniform. When we had our first Class A uniform inspection, all the old lifer NCOs in our battalion were looking at him VERY closely. Even the sergeant major asked him a lot of questions about his service.

Doggone,

Uhhhh. Ummmm. Yes I did and will do so again. Not sure how to answer a statement so mindbogglingly incorrect. A weaker dollar means you can buy less goods. If the dollar falls everything we import becomes more expensive. It costs more to buy more of that Chinese crap at Walmart. Dollar denominated purchases of foreign oil would be more expensive. I’m not sure there is an economist alive who would disagree with the idea that a weaker dollar reduces purchasing power. At this point you are really looking superlative dumb. Mazda isn’t an American manufacturer
*******************************************************************************

Partnership with Ford Motor CompanyMazda’s financial difficulties during the 1960s resulted in a new corporate investor, Ford Motor Company. Starting in 1979 with a 7-percent financial stake, Ford began a partnership with Mazda resulting in various joint projects. During the 1980s, Ford gained another 20-percent financial stake. These included large and small efforts in all areas of the automotive landscape. This was most notable in the realm of pickup trucks (like the Mazda B-Series, which spawned a Ford Courier variant in North America in 1972) and smaller cars. For instance, Mazda’s Familia platform was used for Ford models like the Laser and Escort, while the Capella architecture found its way into Ford’s Telstar sedan and Probe sports models. In 2002 Ford gained an extra 5-percent financial stake.

JohnnyReb, if the nominee is Romney, he cannot make the argument against ObamaCare. I mean, this is the man who insisted that his official portrait as governor of Massachusetts include a copy of his health-insurance reform plan. He cannot credibly turn around and condemn Obama for following his example.

Jay–As I’m sure you’re well aware, Romney is proposing a revocation of ObamaCare from a states’ rights standpoint. Somewhat of a stretch, but at this point I don’t care what the reasoning is.

This game of politics is not very much fun anymore and there is so much at stake for the future of this country. I’m ok, my family will be ok, but the children, what will they be looking at in 20, 30 years?

Mick–As far as I’m concerned, the National Debt should be the only campaign issue coming from either side. The numbers are out of control. We can’t keep spending more than we’re bringing in. We’ve got a $38,000 budget on a $29,000 income, with $158,000 already on the credit card.

So no, you did not make your point. For example, let’s look at what Media Matters does:

First, they state what someone said and back it up with a quoted source. Therefore, they start with a FACT that this person said this.

Then they take what was said and refute it, again with facts, by saying what other people and groups have said or done that is contrary to whatever statement they are targeting.

The WORST you can say about them is that they use buzz headlines to get you to start reading and a preamble that is “left leaning.”

Erwin, this is an example of a LIE. Just because it is his opinion does not mean it cannot be directly refuted.

Doom — “My problem with Kerry is that he alleged things that he had no evidence of happening”

Nope. He repeated what others had testified about in a hearing in Detroit. He didn’t allege anything.

“Top Republicans will let conservatives wake up to what they’ve done if mitt loses, prepare ardently for 2016, and focus on winning the senate.”

Top Republicans will need to wake up to what THEY’VE done and prepare to change or exit stage right. Some of these people are at odds with their voting base.

Remember where the Dems were in 2008 at this point. Their “inevitable” establishment candidate was in trouble, too, ultimately on her way to a Cabinet post.

Erwin: You used a bad example. Plus, you are saying things are facts that are not facts. I can understand why you might be confused, but do not expect those of us who know better to follow along.

A fact is something that can be verified to be true. An opinion is something that cannot be verified to be true, but can nevertheless be disproven sometimes. For example, if I say all conservatives are idiots, that might be my opinion, but it’s still not the truth. And it was NEVER a fact.

I guess no blog dispute too small to weigh in on:

Doggone–Though his wording was poor, EC is technically correct in his assertion. A horse which was blind would not qualify for the category of horses which saw well. Think about it from the Venn diagram perspective. Your return point that a horse which didn’t “see well” necessarily had some sight isn’t correct from a strict set-theory POV.

I still think that any war is the most stupid endeavor that mankind can do and always will, but most especially undeclared ones.

What do you think the Jewish people who your dad helped liberate think about the Allies waging a stupid war that saved them?

If Kerry used his service for political gain, so be it…

Bush Sr and Dole when running against Clinton ran commercials when speaking of their service.

Bush Jr accentuated his bravery of being in the Air National Garud when running sorties up and down the Gulf Coast and protecting Gulf Shores and Destin from being invaded by the Viet Cong. Heck he was so arrogant that he during the 88 or 92 convention he told a reporter that the war may have been different had he been there… You want to see the clip?

It is KERRY’s service, NOT anyone else’s. his experience and experience of those who served with and spoke to who served

Could he have embellished? sure. But you nor I were there. We do not know.
We do know that the SVBs main spokesmen went on tv to laugh about Kerry saying he was in Cambodia only for WH tapes to reveal that that same person told Nixon.. HE was in Cambodia himself. So we do know that disinformation was purposely directed at him……

You have your opinion, but lose no more sleep about it

JOSE,

Conversely I wonder if the Tutsis in Rwanda think war would have been justified to save them as 800,000 of them and Hutu moderates were being slaughtered with hoes and machetes. I agree with normal to a point but I also agree that war is absolutely justified sometimes- “The only thing evil needs to flourish is for good men to stand by and do nothing.” And thankfully good men eventually quit standing by and doing nothing in WW2. Unfortunately they did stand by and do nothing in the case of Rwanda- or in Darfur today.

TBS,

Trust me I don’t lose sleep over Kerry. But I read both sides of the argument and came to the conclusion that while the right is not fully accurate on his war svc I learned enough to know that I still find this man to be despicable. That’s enough about Kerry though. We don’t want to lose no sleep over him after all.
