If Mitt Romney loses Michigan tonight — and the polls say that’s possible — you’re gonna see some stuff happen. The Republican Party is gonna look like the scene in “Titanic” when people finally begin to understand: This unsinkable sucker could really go down.

The band warms up the crowd for Mitt Romney's Michigan concession speech?
Such a defeat would not end Romney’s campaign — he has too many resources and too much organization to simply sink beneath the waters. But a loss in his native state would confirm to many of his fellow Republicans that an alternative must be found, and quickly. For Romney, the setback would be significant because it would damage the single most important asset that he possesses, which is credibility. Mr. Inevitable would look more and more like Mr. Inevitable Loser.
But what alternatives do the Republicans have? Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum are far more problematic than Romney. I’m beginning to hear strange noises out of Florida, as if Jeb Bush were starting to stir a bit, but that’s still a longshot. On the other hand, if Romney loses Michigan, those noises may increase in volume pretty quickly.
Truthfully, though, it’s still hard to envision the mechanism by which a late entry seizes control of the race. Those who have been campaigning all along aren’t going to meekly set aside their ambitions and allow some white knight to ride in and seize the prize.
And should Romney win in Michigan? Victory won’t do a lot for him, because it’s a state that he’s supposed to win pretty handily, against a set of opponents whom he ought to thrash. In college basketball terms, you don’t get many RPI points for beating weak opponents on your home court. A Romney win in Michigan, twinned with an expected win in Arizona, would merely extend the party’s current unsettled state of affairs.

There is an excellent chance that, before too long, we’ll conclude that all of our troops who died in Iraq and Afghanistan gave their lives for NOTHING. And, we will thank George W. Bush for that. Of course, debtload, economic growth, unemployment and gas prices mean far more to you and other cons than the mere lives of our troops.

Re: the USA Today poll, Affordable Care Act.
As is typical with many polls, I’d suspect people don’t know that much about ACA. Get specific with “if your wife gets breast cancer, do you want the insurance company to have the right to cancel your policy?” and I doubt the answer would be a resounding ‘yes!’
But more to the point: My Congressman, Rep (Dr.) Michael Burgess, is chairman of the House Healthcare Caucus and a critic, not of health care reform, but of aspects of the ACA. Listen to this 2-minute video. Notice how, at the one-minute mark, he says if the Supreme Court finds the individual mandate unconstitutional, other insurance reforms must follow or health care costs will spiral out of control and we need something to take its place.
In other words, JohnnyReb, what Republican Congressional Leaders and presidential candidates say to fire up the base and defeat Pres Obama is one thing. What they do quietly, behind the scenes, is pretty much the opposite.

Jm – I don’t falsely assume anything. The intelligence reports that have been made public admit that they don’t know if Iran wants to use their nuclear program for energy or for weapons. I’m smart enough to realize that all the intelligence reports aren’t being made public, but one has to assume that they wouldn’t make those reports public if they were sure that Iran wanted to produce a weapons program. If Iran is just building nuclear power plants then what is the big deal? Does Cuba, Mexico or Canada have the right to attack us in here in Georgia because we’re building a new nuclear reactor?

We know that Santorum has Friess backing him and Gingrich has Adelson and Mitt has his own money but where is the Koch money flowing or is it sitting on the sidelines waiting for a candidate. And why isn’t that money going to Ron Paul. After all, the Kochs and Ron should be tight as in very close since they are all of the Libertarian persuasion and just wearing Republican armbands out of necessity.

godless heathen -”The oil is going to the global market either way.”
Exactly! Since the U.S. has no control over the global market, there is no way that the POTUS can control the prices in order to affect a reduction in the cost of fuel. Moving the oil from point A to point B is simply transportation not pricing. The pipeline will allow the Canadians to move the crude to the coastal refineries where it will then be sold on the world market at market prices. There is no stipulation that the oil transported across the U.S. gets to STAY in the U.S. The only way to guarantee that it does, is to nationalize the industry, giving the U.S. direct control of all domestic oil supplies. Anything else is just smoke and mirrors.

The oil refineries in the west/midwest can process the West Texas and Canadian Crude. Other refineries are from an earlier generation that can only process the sweet crude and many of those refineries have shut down because of margin squeeze and the resulting inability to make a profit. Once gas prices are high enough perhaps more refineries will be built that can process the less desireable but cheaper crude.

“Bury your head in the sand, the real estate collapse, the result of the ownership society and regulators looking the other way is the problem.”
Mick, I don’t disagree with you there. But is it all W’s fault. Do the Ds not hold any responsibility at all? Any? Or fannie or freddie mac? Or people themselves? Or Congress in the laws that they passed that made lending to people who otherwise had no business getting loans?
“Why is the middle class in tatters? They are all broke from equity lines, flipping real estate. You conveniently overlook all that as if it didn’t matter.”
And its all W’s fault?
“Bush was handed a surplus, squandered it, eviscerated it and left the next guy a big pile of elephant dung.”
Wrong on 2 points. First of all the surplus was projected and never realized so you’re wrong on that count. Secondly the real credit to balanced budgets goes to Newt and the Rs who dragged Clinton screaming and kicking to the table. And one other thing. We inherited the dot.com bust from Clinton or did you forget all about that?

Here’s a little insight to the “Glory Days” of the Bush Administratin in regard to Thulsa Dooms ascertion that things were hunky dorey during Bushs middle years:
How did it get so bad?
Greed. The American economy is built on credit. Credit is a great tool when used wisely. For instance, credit can be used to start or expand a business, which can create jobs. It can also be used to purchase large ticket items such as houses or cars. Again, more jobs are created and people’s needs are satisfied. But in the last decade, credit went unchecked in our country, and it got out of control.
Mortgage brokers, acting only as middle men, determined who got loans, then passed on the responsibility for those loans on to others in the form of mortgage backed assets (after taking a fee for themselves originating the loan). Exotic and risky mortgages became commonplace and the brokers who approved these loans absolved themselves of responsibility by packaging these bad mortgages with other mortgages and reselling them as “investments.”
Thousands of people took out loans larger than they could afford in the hopes that they could either flip the house for profit or refinance later at a lower rate and with more equity in their home – which they would then leverage to purchase another “investment” house.
A lot of people got rich quickly and people wanted more. Before long, all you needed to buy a house was a pulse and your word that you could afford the mortgage. Brokers had no reason not to sell you a home. They made a cut on the sale, then packaged the mortgage with a group of other mortgages and erased all personal responsibility of the loan. But many of these mortgage backed assets were ticking time bombs. And they just went off.
The housing market declined
The housing slump set off a chain reaction in our economy. Individuals and investors could no longer flip their homes for a quick profit, adjustable rates mortgages adjusted skyward and mortgages no longer became affordable for many homeowners, and thousands of mortgages defaulted, leaving investors and financial institutions holding the bag.
This caused massive losses in mortgage backed securities and many banks and investment firms began bleeding money. This also caused a glut of homes on the market which depressed housing prices and slowed the growth of new home building, putting thousands of home builders and laborers out of business. Depressed housing prices caused further complications as it made many homes worth much less than the mortgage value and some owners chose to simply walk away instead of pay their mortgage.

Your somewhat right in that regard. The prices will continue to fluctuate up or down in reaction to to the market. However, what the pipeline does is makes it cheaper for Canada to move the oil to the coastal refineries. Rather than pay the transportation costs of refining the product and then having it shipped to the ports for sale on the world market, they would have the ability to eliminate the “middle man” as it were and go direct. This is a definite cost saver for the company, but that savings is not being passed to the consumer. The pipeline simply makes it cheaper for the company to move the oil to the market in order to sell it at a higher price, which does nothing to help the U.S. in regard to our current fuel costs.

Not so sure about that. There’s evidence that Iran is enriching uranium to about 20%, which is way higher than you need for a conventional reactor such as a power plant. Purity of 3-5% is sufficient for that. You have to get to ~90% to have weapons-grade uranium, but my understanding is that by the time you can enrich to 40-50%, you’ve done most of the work and your research is largely complete.
I think the burden of proof is on Iran to show what it’s doing that 20% enrichment for, and if they can’t provide a scientifically plausible explanation, then the only remaining conclusion I can reach is that they’re trying to make weapons-grade HEU. If they can’t provide that explanation, then I think measures stronger than sanctions must be considered in an expeditious manner.

in other words, your claim is unsubstantiated.

Yes, it’s frustrating. This game of politics is not very much fun anymore and there is so much at stake for the future of this country. I’m ok, my family will be ok, but the children, what will they be looking at in 20, 30 years? I completely disagree with modern republican philosopy and view most of their policies as dangerous to the middle class but mighty friendly to the wealthy class, as if they need any more help. It’s the same old story, ok man just kidding about you being a cinderblockhead, you’re actually more of a spirited debater with whom I disagree. At least you have the humor down…

Doom — “But is it all W’s fault. Do the Ds not hold any responsibility at all? Any?”
The Bush Administration demanded that states not impose stricter controls on mortgage issuance and underwriting. Georgia was one of the first states told *not* to stiffen their regulations when the General Assembly was considering it.
“Or fannie or freddie mac?”
Fannie and Freddie provided liquidity. They didn’t write the crappy, toxic mortgages.
“Or people themselves? Or Congress in the laws that they passed that made lending to people who otherwise had no business getting loans?”
Over 80% of the toxic loans were written by organizations that were *not* subject to Federal oversight. You are just repeating a baseless canard of the right.

JHM – That’s more of “in-depth” explanation than I’ve seen for it. On the news or otherwise. But I would still want that explanation and more concrete evidence before I would support an attack.

Agreed. If people vote for the next POTUS based soley on criteria that can’t be controlled by the administration, then they are truly idiots and deserve the government that they get.
