On gay question, Georgia legislators side with Sharia

A bill proposed in the Georgia House of Representatives would make it illegal for public employers, such as schools, universities and state government itself, to discriminate against Georgians on the basis of their sexual orientation or identity.

At this point in history, you might think that protecting school teachers and others from being fired solely because of their sexual orientation would be pretty uncontroversial. In fact, the legislator who sponsored the bill, state Rep. Karla Drenner of Avondale Estates, is herself gay. In a subcommittee hearing this week, every witness but one testified in favor of House Bill 630.

The sole exception was Tanya Ditty, a teacher and state director of the conservative and anti-gay Concerned Women of America, which claims 12,000 members in Georgia. Among other things, the group also campaigns against the imposition of Sharia law, which it describes as “a threat to America as we know it.”

Here is an excerpt from Ditty’s testimony.

For those unable to view the video, Ditty warns that the legislation would force public schools to hire and employ people who engage in beastiality, necrophilia and other -ialities and -philias too horrible to mention. She also expresses concern about restroom policy, recounting a searing incident five years ago in which she believes she shared a restroom with a man dressed as a woman, but didn’t discover it until afterward.

The good news is, she survived.

“What’s going to protect our children if a pedophiliac comes in and gets a teaching job, is a bus driver, is a custodian?” Ditty asked legislators. “And they can be people who just want to prey on children, and they will be protected with this law.”

For the record, child sexual abuse is a vicious crime. It is a felony in this state. Anyone with a record of pedophilia is not only barred by Georgia law from teaching in a school or serving as a bus driver; such a person is banned from living or working in any job within 1,000 feet of a school or even a school bus stop. Nothing about HB 630 would have changed that. The legislation does not protect criminals or sexual predators.

Nonetheless, the House subcommittee voted 3-2, with the Republican majority carrying the day, to kill the bill and to continue to deny gay and lesbian Georgians the right to be employed by the same government to which they pay taxes and by which they are governed.

However, I wonder if they realize that by doing so, they themselves have ensured that Georgia law remains in compliance with Sharia law, which like Ditty and others condemns gays for “transgressing the limits.”

NOTE: Please keep personal comments about Ditty and others within the bounds of civil discussion.

Higher gas prices will mean people drive less and drive more fuel efficient cars. People will live in denser cities. Obama wants this and is happy gas prices are higher. He actually said we need high gas prices.

“I’m not suggesting that she has that intent, but can you accurately predict that some nutcase won’t use such tactics 20 years from now?”

Not sure what you mean by this. That one person would start hanging gays for being gay or that one person would oppose a similar bill like this.

“My problem with things like this is that nobody thinks about the long term reprecussions.”

That’s the whole purpose. People on both sides are thinking about the longterm repercussions.

“Most of these protests of laws are rooted in religious beliefs, are they not?”

Yes. As are many of our laws such as murder. So.

“The attempt to back it by scientific fact only masks the true intent.”

Oh I think her intent and her feelings regarding the whole gay agenda are very clear and that she makes no attempt to hide or mask her feelings. She is simply using a research paper to bolster her argument. Both sides frequently do that. So.

As I said just narrow the language to include a couple of specific orientations and try it again.

Last week the GOP published its weekly talking points and highlighted gas prices as an area to attack the President. It is good to see that the Fox News watchers and those that listen to right wing radio heard their marching orders. One can only imagine gas prices if they got their wish and could declare war on Iran.

The problem with what you’re asking is that what she’s talking about has nothing to do with sexual orientation in the first place.

http://www.apa.org/helpcenter/sexual-orientation.aspx

Sexual orientation refers to an enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attractions to men, women, or both sexes. Sexual orientation also refers to a person’s sense of identity based on those attractions, related behaviors, and membership in a community of others who share those attractions.

That’s coming from the American Psychological Association. Can you show where necrophilia and those other things even pertain to orientation. She’s basically marching a straw army through the Gold Dome, and you and others are laying rose petals at her feet while she’s torching those straw men.

Brosephus: True, but I am sure the case can be made without sourcing politifact. If you source politifact you are likely to see a bunch of politifact sources from the right in which they got it completely wrong. And I would like to have to avoid that.

Fred – claiming to be an independent means nothing other than you are fickle. I suppose the Patriot Act could be looked upon as a states rights issue, but I believe usually not. And, don’t lump all Republicans into one group; I don’t think all support every aspect of the Patriot Act.

Doom — ” And as for the nonsensical argument that the Ds always present that we can’t influence the price of oil by drilling for more oil I have but one response. If you drill for more oil you increase the world supply. Yes? I now direct all liberals to the laws of supply and demand.”

I saw a guy from Reuters on the business news this morning, and he said the exact opposite of what you’re saying.

No diss intended here, but I’m going to go with the opinion of the guy who collects and reports business news for a living over your opinion, okay?

RF,

“do we actually need a law like this at the state level when federal law pretty much protects people from being discriminated against based on sexual orientation?”

Except it doesn’t. Please reference ENDA.

I personally do not believe that any person such as Ms. Ditty deserves civility in response to blatant lies introduced as testimonial in order to prohibit others from attaining the same level of freedoms in these United States as those like her currently enjoy. The least she could do is wear a Burka.

Thulsa Doom – “If you drill for more oil you increase the world supply. Yes?”

Yes, and then OPEC can simply reduce production to keep levels static. In the meantime, Shell Oil, owned by a company based in the Netherlands can then direct it’s U.S. producers to continue to sell oil at the current market rate. Thereby having 0 effect on the price of gas. But hey, that doesn’t sound nearly as sexy as “drill here, drill now, pay less”.

OMG! Did we hear the same speech? You really are lost to America!

Way to stay honest.

What Obama said had NOTHING to do with oil and gas prices, and I proved that. If you can prove otherwise, go for it.

No, not by drilling. Unless you find some and bring it to market. Then the supply is increased.

http://www.times-herald.com/local/Subcommittee-kills-bill-to-prevent-state-hiring-discrimination–2089848

“The gist of this bill is fairness,” Drenner said. “There is nothing civil about discrimination.”

She noted that 24 states and 13 of Georgia’s local governments already have similar anti-discrimination policies.

[...]

The lone witness opposed to the bill was Tanya Ditty, state director of Concerned Women of America. She said the bill would erase safeguards against schools hiring child molesters because their sexual preferences could no longer be discriminated against.

Sexual preferences and sexual orientation are not the same thing. And she’s supposed to be an educator? Damn….

After all being a woman and all you automatically know what the 4 million other women in the state feel and think.

Woah! quite a hissy lecture from the d00d who just spoke for “most women.” Especially seeing as how I expressed no opinion on what “most women” think in this matter.

I forgot that as a man it’s not only your job to speak for “most women,” it’s your job to pre-emptively tell women they don’t speak for women.

Now if you’re done with the lectures get back in that kitchen and make me a sammich. :)

Oh, I agree, Jay, but when a person takes their craziness to the point of messing with someone else’s right to life, liberty and the pursuit of a job, they’d better have thick skin. Some days, this crap just gets to me! I keep thinking it can’t get any worse…and then I read this stuff ….surreal!

“If you drill for more oil you increase the world supply. Yes? I now direct all liberals to the laws of supply and demand.”

No. That would only be true IF we were the ONLY people with oil to sell. We could drill more, produce more…and other suppliers could REDUCE their output and the supply would remain exactly the same.

When I googled that quote, that was one of the first links that explained where the quote came from. Fact is fact and can’t be twisted to something other than it’s meaning unless that fact is chopped to pieces. I don’t care what source it is. I don’t get into that whole source nullification stuff that y’all do.

Oscar — “We need to quit using so much gas and the price would fall. That’s what we need to do.”

That’s exactly what the Reuters guy said. Reducing consumption is about the only way the US can impact petroleum prices.

If we produce more, then other nations that produce more oil than we do will produce less. If we cut back production, other nations will increase theirs.

The only way, he said, for us to influence oil prices, would be to cut back our *consumption* or to physically take oil off the market by producing it and holding it without selling it. Iran has done that in the past, but since we don’t have a nationalized petroleum industry, that’s not a method we can use. Therefore, he said, the only tool we have here is to cut back consumption.

So Thulsa… if I went before the State legislature and testified that YOU were a pedophile and that YOU wanted to rape children in public school bathrooms, you would be happy with that language? Of course you wouldn’t .You would be angry that someone lied about you and spoke about you with such disgusting hatred. Walk a mile in someone else shoes before you judge them.

Let me go ahead and apologize. In a drunken stupor, I once wandered into a women’s restroom at a hilton head beach club…I became aware of my surroundings at “mid stream”…I left as soon as as finished. Sorry for the irreparable damage I may have caused. It wasn’t my intent… When you have to go, you have to go.
