Santorum a symptom of the GOP’s very deep ills

For those who don’t have video access, here’s what Rick Santorum has to say in the interview above:

“In the Netherlands, people wear different bracelets if they are elderly. And the bracelet is: ‘Do not euthanize me.’ Because they have voluntary euthanasia in the Netherlands but half of the people who are euthanized — 10 percent of all deaths in the Netherlands — half of those people are euthanized involuntarily at hospitals because they are older and sick. And so elderly people in the Netherlands don’t go to the hospital. They go to another country, because they are afraid, because of budget purposes, they will not come out of that hospital if they go in there with sickness.”

A few quick points:

1.) The remarks above come from the frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, a man who in late February is still leading the race by some 10 percentage points nationwide.

2.) This statement was made not five years ago or 10 years ago, but earlier this month.

3.) Not a shred of what Santorum says is true. There are no such bracelets in the Netherlands. They exist only in the same reality in which green men from Mars exist, and in fact the Dutch press is laughing at Santorum’s claim that “we in the Netherlands delight in murder of the elderly.”

While the Netherlands does have a euthanasia law, a total of 3,136 terminally ill people took advantage of that option in 2010, a far cry from Santorum’s claim of 10 percent of all deaths in that nation.

Under Dutch law, the attending physician must certify in writing that the patient has made “a voluntary and carefully considered request” to die. The physician must also certify that the patient is undergoing unbearable suffering and that the patient’s condition is terminal, with no hope of recovery. As Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post further notes, “the patient must voluntarily and repeatedly request the procedure, and another doctor must provide a written opinion agreeing with the diagnosis. After the death, a commission made up of a doctor, a jurist and an ethical expert also are required to verify that the requirements for euthanasia have been met.”

Say what you choose about the merits of euthanasia. Feel free to debate it. But Santorum’s claims that half of euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands are involuntary — i.e., outright murder — and that senior citizens are terrified of going into the hospital lest they be killed in order to save on health care costs are absolutely ludicrous. It is ignorant fear-mongering, and as the gasps and moans on the tape reveal, people swallow it.

4.) Did I mention that this man leads in every national poll for the Republican presidential nomination? As a Dutch writer notes, “It would be laughable if not for the fact that Santorum is still very much in the race for the Republican nomination against Barack Obama for the presidency of the most powerful country in the world.”

Look, every party has its Maxine Waters and, to a lesser degree, its Dennis Kuciniches. However, Waters did not just win three presidential primaries, as Santorum has. When Kucinich ran for president in 2008, he got all of 1.35 percent of the vote in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary and then dropped out.

I honestly find it depressing that a major American political party has come to a state of affairs verging on collective madness. It’s obviously not a healthy sign for the Republican Party, but it’s also bad for the Democrats, who need a sane and vigorous opposition to keep them honest. Most of all, it’s bad for our country and bodes poorly for its future. I know for a fact that there are millions of very sane, decent Republicans in this country; I just wish they would begin to speak up and take their party back.

Many of the Christian faith have said, well, that’s okay, contraception is okay. It’s not okay. What I’m asking all of you tonight is not to put on a uniform. Put on a bumper sticker. Is it that much to ask? Is it that much to ask to step up and serve your country?” ~ Sen. Would you agree the this extreme nonsense is result of the fact that the BIG money for both parties can be found only on the far fringes of each ideology? The democrats have unions and other uber liberal cash machines, the GOP has the religious zealots among others. My feeling is that both, if not all fringe elements are on the verge of irrelevancy..;..Too bad a moderate who takes an independent approach will never get elected much less funded…Of course, the banks, telecoms, energy and wall street apply equal amounts of butter on each slice…

From this comment: “In every society, the definition of marriage has not ever to my knowledge included homosexuality. That’s not to pick on homosexuality. It’s not, you know, man on child, man on dog, or whatever the case may be.” ~ Rick Santorum , speaking to a reporter in 2003,

My conspiracy minded thoughts lead me to the GOP trotting out these half-baked candidates on purpose to lead to a brokered convention, then throwing a Christie or Bush into the ring. “Facts don’t necessarily have the power to change our minds. In fact, quite the opposite. In a series of studies in 2005 and 2006, researchers at the University of Michigan found that when misinformed people, particularly political partisans, were exposed to corrected facts in news stories, they rarely changed their minds. In fact, they often became even more strongly set in their beliefs. Facts, they found, were not curing misinformation. Like an underpowered antibiotic, facts could actually make misinformation even stronger.”

In 2001 the Illinois legislature took up a bill that was patterned after the federal BAIPA. Obama voted against this bill in committee. On the floor of the Illinois Senate, he later gave the only speech against the bill, saying, “I mean, it—it would essentially bar abortions, because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an antiabortion statute.” (What?! So, Scout, you think the breadth of opinion that Democratic politicians can express without fear of being challenged for their seat is less than what we see in the Republican Party? Or in simpler terms, do Democrats have a term like RINO for those who don’t toe the Party line?

I heard audio today of a speech Reagan gave in 1983 at the National Association of Evangelicals’ annual convention. He was POTUS at the time, a setting President. He stated many of the same things Santorum is saying. The Left did not like Reagan just as they don’t like Santorum. If anything, their rhetoric is even louder. If you want to hear Reagan, and don’t think your computer will combust before your very eyes, go the RushLimbaugh.com

To be fair, Santorum doesn’t just have an unhealthy fascination with gay sex.

He has an unhealthy fascination with sex, period.

They BOTH suck,

I’m not a Santorum fan by any means. But could anyone possibly do worse than the O man? I don’t think it would be possible to preside over poorer economic performance if you tried. THe recovery under this joke of a president has been nothing short of absymal. What are we still negative 428,000 jobs? God help us from this buffoon. And there are people thinking this man is doing a good job? Its nothing short of mindboggling. Seriously. Do they just have their collective heads up their asses that they can’t look at historical recoveries from recessions, even deep recessions such as the 81-82 recession and see just how absolutely horrendous recovery has been under this idiot? This fool is an absolute menace to the nation. The fact that such a fool with ZERO executive experience to begin with could have been even elected is a testament to just how many stupid people there are in this country. A bunch of collective dumbmasses.

I know for a fact that there are millions of very sane, decent Republicans in this country; I just wish they would begin to speak up and take their party back.

Me too!!!!

Obama uttered those statements, and many others I don’t have time to post (”spread the wealth”, etc.), and he was ELECTED.

Just because Pres Reagan used the term ‘evil’ does not make his remarks anywhere close to what Santorum is saying.

Thulsa – I truly believe that Obama will be judged as one of the worst presidents in history, but at the same time, I think a big part of that is because of the time in history that he became president. I don’t believe anyone could have done much better of a job the past three years. Having said that, yes, I think Santorum would be worse. Much much worse. Cause I haven’t seen any evidence that there is any substance outside of his religious beliefs and religious beliefs have no place in the government.

Please don’t reply “blue dogs.” That’s one of the biggest lies in Congress. My Congressman claims to be a blue dog, what a joke. They always vote with the Left. Their so called physical conservatisim is nothing more than a trick to get elected in swayable districts.

Scout,

As I said I’m not a Santorum fan at all but the reality is that at this stage an incumbent president really should have anywhere from a 10-20% lead while the other party is having its candidates savage each other left and right. But once the candidate is solidified either Santorum or Romney can turn their full attention to one thing-Obama’s dismal and rather pitiful economic record. Facts are facts and the facts are in- this is the single worst recovery from a recession that we have had in the post WW2 era. FACT!

I give Santorum credit for loving kids and having the resources to provide for those he brings into the world.

But I find his remarks regarding the proper role of sex for procreation to be a bit outside the mainstream, even for a practicing Catholic.

TD @ 4:44

My assessment could be totally wrong; however I do not think Santorum would have a chance…….

For all of the things that we could discuss, debate and argue about Obama and no matter who is right or wrong; that will not garner many moderate and independent votes for Santorum.

Santorum is working the social issues for two reasons: he believes them and polls show he is taking away the social conservative vote from Romney and Gingrich. The problem is that those social conservative votes are going to vote Repub for the most part anyway. Taking them away now, helps him in his current fight, but will garner much extra in the General election.

He knows that, but he must take that gamble to even win the nomination………
