Santorum a symptom of the GOP’s very deep ills
For those who don’t have video access, here’s what Rick Santorum has to say in the interview above:
“In the Netherlands, people wear different bracelets if they are elderly. And the bracelet is: ‘Do not euthanize me.’ Because they have voluntary euthanasia in the Netherlands but half of the people who are euthanized — 10 percent of all deaths in the Netherlands — half of those people are euthanized involuntarily at hospitals because they are older and sick. And so elderly people in the Netherlands don’t go to the hospital. They go to another country, because they are afraid, because of budget purposes, they will not come out of that hospital if they go in there with sickness.”
A few quick points:
1.) The remarks above come from the frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, a man who in late February is still leading the race by some 10 percentage points nationwide.
2.) This statement was made not five years ago or 10 years ago, but earlier this month.
3.) Not a shred of what Santorum says is true. There are no such bracelets in the Netherlands. They exist only in the same reality in which green men from Mars exist, and in fact the Dutch press is laughing at Santorum’s claim that “we in the Netherlands delight in murder of the elderly.”
While the Netherlands does have a euthanasia law, a total of 3,136 terminally ill people took advantage of that option in 2010, a far cry from Santorum’s claim of 10 percent of all deaths in that nation.
Under Dutch law, the attending physician must certify in writing that the patient has made “a voluntary and carefully considered request” to die. The physician must also certify that the patient is undergoing unbearable suffering and that the patient’s condition is terminal, with no hope of recovery. As Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post further notes, “the patient must voluntarily and repeatedly request the procedure, and another doctor must provide a written opinion agreeing with the diagnosis. After the death, a commission made up of a doctor, a jurist and an ethical expert also are required to verify that the requirements for euthanasia have been met.”
Say what you choose about the merits of euthanasia. Feel free to debate it. But Santorum’s claims that half of euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands are involuntary — i.e., outright murder — and that senior citizens are terrified of going into the hospital lest they be killed in order to save on health care costs are absolutely ludicrous. It is ignorant fear-mongering, and as the gasps and moans on the tape reveal, people swallow it.
4.) Did I mention that this man leads in every national poll for the Republican presidential nomination? As a Dutch writer notes, “It would be laughable if not for the fact that Santorum is still very much in the race for the Republican nomination against Barack Obama for the presidency of the most powerful country in the world.”
Look, every party has its Maxine Waters and, to a lesser degree, its Dennis Kuciniches. However, Waters did not just win three presidential primaries, as Santorum has. When Kucinich ran for president in 2008, he got all of 1.35 percent of the vote in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary and then dropped out.
I honestly find it depressing that a major American political party has come to a state of affairs verging on collective madness. It’s obviously not a healthy sign for the Republican Party, but it’s also bad for the Democrats, who need a sane and vigorous opposition to keep them honest. Most of all, it’s bad for our country and bodes poorly for its future. I know for a fact that there are millions of very sane, decent Republicans in this country; I just wish they would begin to speak up and take their party back.

I don’t know how that could be unless you are assuming every married couple has kids. A married couple are 2 people combining to pay for one home. A single person whether paying or mortgage or renting has to pay for a home all alone. I don’t see how the average single black woman could have more disposable income than a married couple whether that married couple is black,white, or green- especially if they don’t have kids.
I think this sociologist is kinda off on her stats and likewise her rationale. I bet she is selling a lot of books or booking a lot of speaking fees though!

bruno, my rate for you would be much much higher if I even agreed to take your case. As for claims regarding Fred’s wealth, if it is any of your business, not sure whether retaining an attorney is a determinate of someone’s wealth or lack of it. I have been retained by clients who are very wealthy and I have worked pro bono for those who can barely afford the shirt on their back (and some who can’t). Why I have even seen wealthy doctors closing on $3 million dollar homes whining about a $100 additional fee.

That is true. There is a decent correlation (if not a guaranteed outcome) between good parenting and good kids. And many of those with good parents who stray from the good path often come back to it once they come to their senses. The same cannot be said for those with bad or non-existent role models. Unquestionable love and firm discipline matters a lot.

Are you freaking kidding me? Is there anything fantastical Fred claims he hasn’t done? Yes. I remember what you are talking about. A couple of days ago you weren’t here but he also said he was a nascar interviewer or writer or something and covered NASCAR- said he had interviewed Joey Logano when he was racing when he was 14 or 15. Let’s see- he was an elite special ops soldier doing 30,000 foot halo jumps, he was in home construction, a nascar interviewer, I think he was a part time mathematician, and of course he was rain man in real life with the photographic memory capable of quoting random pages and passages picked at random by a quizzing teacher.
Now last week he claimed that he receives a monthly retirement check of $19,600 which I assume is net which means that he gets a retirement check of near a quarter million a year after taxes. One thing I really learned in my days as a broker is that as a general rule of thumb the people that have money are very quiet about it and the people that don’t are very boisterous about money that they don’t really have. Fantastical Fred!

You know, many of us here engage in what could be called ‘intense’ back and forth expressions of political positioning and other beliefs, and on occasion things may cross a line of decency as well as sanity. I am not a Santorum supporter by any means, let me make that perfectly clear.
This comment, Bookman, in my opinion goes far beyond anything like that. It is a direct threat or encouragement of a potential terroristic threat against a candidate for President of the United States.

If gas prices are affecting you so much, perhaps you should have made better choices in life. The government can’t save you, so pull yourself up by your bootstraps and get a job that pays more so you don’t worry so much about filling up the tank.

The question you SHOULD be asking is this: Why are gas prices going UP when US gas consumption is DOWN?? Here’s the answer: the oil companies are EXPORTING gasoline….and the refineries are in changeover mode to prepare gasoline for the SUMMER!!
If you are honest with yourself, every time (until now) that gasoline has broken a dollar mode, Republicans were in the White House! ($1 – Nixon….$2/3 – Bush41, $4 – Bush43). I will also note that when I was living in the Midwest, the higher prices hit faster than they did in the South!!

Again, why are you relying on the government to help with you with your shortage of income? Your entitlement mentality is showing. You don’t have a right to low gas prices, you need to stop looking to the government to keep prices low so that you don’t have to apply yourself. Make better choices, stop making your lack of motivation a public policy issue.

I broke out the motorcycle this morning. A great day for riding and my answer to high gas prices. 55 to 59 miles a gallon on a three and a half gallon tank makes 192.5 to 206.5 miles of pure fun per tank….
