Santorum a symptom of the GOP’s very deep ills

For those who don’t have video access, here’s what Rick Santorum has to say in the interview above:

“In the Netherlands, people wear different bracelets if they are elderly. And the bracelet is: ‘Do not euthanize me.’ Because they have voluntary euthanasia in the Netherlands but half of the people who are euthanized — 10 percent of all deaths in the Netherlands — half of those people are euthanized involuntarily at hospitals because they are older and sick. And so elderly people in the Netherlands don’t go to the hospital. They go to another country, because they are afraid, because of budget purposes, they will not come out of that hospital if they go in there with sickness.”

A few quick points:

1.) The remarks above come from the frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, a man who in late February is still leading the race by some 10 percentage points nationwide.

2.) This statement was made not five years ago or 10 years ago, but earlier this month.

3.) Not a shred of what Santorum says is true. There are no such bracelets in the Netherlands. They exist only in the same reality in which green men from Mars exist, and in fact the Dutch press is laughing at Santorum’s claim that “we in the Netherlands delight in murder of the elderly.”

While the Netherlands does have a euthanasia law, a total of 3,136 terminally ill people took advantage of that option in 2010, a far cry from Santorum’s claim of 10 percent of all deaths in that nation.

Under Dutch law, the attending physician must certify in writing that the patient has made “a voluntary and carefully considered request” to die. The physician must also certify that the patient is undergoing unbearable suffering and that the patient’s condition is terminal, with no hope of recovery. As Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post further notes, “the patient must voluntarily and repeatedly request the procedure, and another doctor must provide a written opinion agreeing with the diagnosis. After the death, a commission made up of a doctor, a jurist and an ethical expert also are required to verify that the requirements for euthanasia have been met.”

Say what you choose about the merits of euthanasia. Feel free to debate it. But Santorum’s claims that half of euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands are involuntary — i.e., outright murder — and that senior citizens are terrified of going into the hospital lest they be killed in order to save on health care costs are absolutely ludicrous. It is ignorant fear-mongering, and as the gasps and moans on the tape reveal, people swallow it.

4.) Did I mention that this man leads in every national poll for the Republican presidential nomination? As a Dutch writer notes, “It would be laughable if not for the fact that Santorum is still very much in the race for the Republican nomination against Barack Obama for the presidency of the most powerful country in the world.”

Look, every party has its Maxine Waters and, to a lesser degree, its Dennis Kuciniches. However, Waters did not just win three presidential primaries, as Santorum has. When Kucinich ran for president in 2008, he got all of 1.35 percent of the vote in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary and then dropped out.

I honestly find it depressing that a major American political party has come to a state of affairs verging on collective madness. It’s obviously not a healthy sign for the Republican Party, but it’s also bad for the Democrats, who need a sane and vigorous opposition to keep them honest. Most of all, it’s bad for our country and bodes poorly for its future. I know for a fact that there are millions of very sane, decent Republicans in this country; I just wish they would begin to speak up and take their party back.

Interesting, md. I was unaware that euthanasia was being practiced in the Netherlands and agree that there is at least some basis in reality for Santorum’s statements, however distorted they may have been. It still doesn’t let him off the hook, in my book though. A president, among other things, really needs to get his facts as straight as possible. Because they form part of the criterion for making decisions.

“Why did the credit card companies raise rates?

For the same reason that dogs lick themselves,

Because they could.”

When the facts just aint on your side resort to hyperbole and emotional rhetoric. Fact is that opponents of the credit card legislation a couple years back told us exactly what would happen if they passed this populist piece of legislation- credit card companies and banks would have to raise rates on all the good customers to compensate for the added risk and premium that they used to put on the appropriately poor paying bad customers.

Just another example of the law of unintended consequences and govt screwing things up even worse with well intentioned legislation. All they did was make things worse for the people who play by the rules. But don’t let that get in the way of good hyperbole and analogies of dogs licking themselves.

“FDR was a dedicated Christian. So was Truman, Carter ,Reagan, Nixon, JFK, both Bushes…. so what’s the big deal with Santorum?”

Don’t confuse nominal with true Christianity: by their fruits you will know them. Nixon and JFK can hardly be called dedicated Christians (I don’t know about the others). Santorum seems so, but I think at this point in our national history it is not important to respect the views of those who are not. The US is not, nor has it ever been, a theocracy. You can work to implement biblical principles in government without evoking the Bible, simply because they work. An atheist can do that and would, in my view, obtain very good results (as I think many already have).

I really don’t care if Santorum believes that the Devil is the main source of America’s problems. I really don’t think that mainstream America gives a damn either.

When asked directly about his views on contraception and government, Santorum claimed that he would be a vocal advocate for his beliefs, but wouldn’t bring the force of government in to back him up. I’m not sure I trust his answer, but know that one person can’t change the law of the land on their own.

As stated above, all of the candidates are presenting well tonight, even Ron Paul. If one used the Bookman blog for their only source of info, it would be easy to think that all hope is lost for the Repubs.

Your comment reminded me of something….

A few months back this black female sociologist, (cana’t remember her name) did a piece in Essence called (paraphrased) “How The Black Church is Keeping Black Women Single”.

In it she outlined how there are 10 women to 2 men involved in black churches and how it’s the female population that keeps the churches afloat and how if all those women were to marry “non christian men”; the black church would go bankrupt. The church fills their head with stuff like “Wait for the right christian man that god chooses for you” and “Being unevenly yoked”; to keep the women bound to the church and paying tithes.

Ahywhoooo — your comment triggered a “Debbie” moment. Sorry.

I think the rational basis occurs when one reads the study…..if I’m Dutch, and I read a few studies that say docs have put people under without permission, I might be a bit leery. We aren’t talking 1 or 2….the number was in the hundreds…….I think that would justify being a little afraid of going to the hospital if one was on the down hill side of life.

I read a few discussions on concern that docs were falsifying death certificates or needed a bed for another patient……I wouldn’t want to be the one in the bed.

Looks like our leftist Constitutional scholars – you know, the ones who say the Constitution is a living breathing organism, and specifically not the rock hard foundation of this republic – have been wafting the vapors of the penumbra again. For the record there is no Constitutional “right to privacy,” certainly none with any meaningful limits. That is why they never cite to any Article.

Santorum is correct in his legal analysis: if there is a right to privacy that gives Constitutional sanction to homosexuality, the same provision gives sanction to statutory rape, incest, zoophilia, and polygamy. None of those is really an issue so far as I am concerned – I could not care less what leftists do in the privacy of their McMansions – but I credit Santorum for consistency in his analysis, and accuse our leftist friends of ad hoc jurisprudence. I say all of that knowing the existence of Griswald v Connecticut, a classic case of leftist activist judges making up language to fit their prejudices.

Debbiedoright,

“Filling their heads with” waiting for the right Christian man? Is that indoctrination or some kind of brain washing to tell a woman to choose a good Christian man? And this sociologist thinks that its all in an effort to keep tythes paying women bound to the church? That makes no sense whatsoever- especially considering that a tythes paying married couple pays more in tythes than a single woman who is likely to be impoverished. Look at the census and at the poor households and you will find there is a striking correlation between poverty and single parent households.

Also I think the brothers need to know about all the nice single women at church. I used to go to the Buckhead church and was a member of their singles club. There were more women then men in that club and the only black guy was my buddy who brought me into the club. There were 3 black women there and they were hot, classy, and smart. Lotta nice women to be met at church and if the ration is 8-2 or whatever then some of the brothers need to get down to the local church.

Damn. Just damn. Morgan freeman was one of my favorite actors. Then again this is from the enquirer. Then again the enquirer has broken some serious stories like the John Edwards mistress story.

The relationship between the 72-year-old actor with step-granddaughter E’Dena Hines, 27, began when she was a teen, the source told The ENQUIRER exclusively. The alleged affair not only contributed to his split from Myrna, his wife of 25 years, it also led to his breakup with his longtime mistress, former schoolteacher Mary Joyce Hays. E’Dena is the granddaughter of Morgan’s first wife, Jeanette Adair Bradshaw, and was raised by Morgan and Myrna “since she was a little girl,” the source told The ENQUIRER. “Myrna said E’dena told her that when she was a teenager, she and Morgan went to dinner at a friend’s house one evening. Both had been drinking, and when they returned home, Morgan attempted to have sex with her. They stopped just short of having intercourse,” the source, a close family insider, told The ENQUIRER. “E’Dena explained to Myrna that she stopped Morgan from going any further.” Myrna confronted Morgan, and he agreed to leave E’Dena alone – but unbeknownst to Myrna, the relationship continued for years, said the source. E’Dena has also been Morgan’s escort to several public events, including last summer’s premiere of the blockbuster Bat-flick hit, The Dark Knight. “Nobody thought anything of it, because she would be introduced as his ‘granddaughter.’ The family insider divulged. “It’s not technically incest, because they are not related by blood…[but] Morgan is trying desperately to keep his divorce out of open court so all the shameful facts won’t become public.”

Yeah…that refrain could be repeated with a lot of actors. I think Sean Penn turned out to be a pretty good actor, but…Same with many more. What can you do? I guess exercise your own boycott as you see fit.

ld- would the GOP–and right-wingers blogging here–accept that a “marriaj” is a civil union between any two consenting adults–w/equal rights as that of “marriage”?

No. Marriage is designed for procreation and raising families. Untill you adapt the ability for one of the people in your civil union to change sexes, it’s not the same. (and if one could change, then it goes back to rule one of them still not being the same.)

If I recall correctly, Kamchak identified Keep as being an attorney who worked in that field. Does that ring a bell, or was it someone else??

Morgan Freeman may have robbed his ex-wife’s daughter’s cradle. The National Enquirer alleges that the 72-year-old actor has been romantically involved with his 27-year-old step-granddaughter, E’Dena Hines, for as long as a decade.

He’s currently mired in a messy divorce with his now-estranged wife of 25 years, costume designer Myrna Colley-Lee, and may go public with his unconventional relationship when the smoke clears.

E’Dena is the granddaughter of Jeanette Adair Bradshaw, Morgan’s first wife, but she was raised by Morgan and Myrna since she was a small child. Morgan adopted E’Dena’s mother, Deena, who is Jeanette’s biological daughter.

“Myrna said E’Dena told her that when she was a teenager, she and Morgan went to dinner at a friend’s house one evening. Both had been drinking, and when they returned home, Morgan attempted to have sex with her. They stopped just short of having intercourse,” a family insider told The Enquirer.

“No. Marriage is designed for procreation and raising families”

got proof of that? It actually isn’t. It is, and was, intended to control the inheritence of property…and to protect the wife and children legally. It has nothing to do with procreation. Or are you REALLY advocating that those who are sterile, or past child bearing age should be barred from marrying?

rumor? More like standard operating procedure. The armed services are in the job of being prepared for any eventuality. They would be remiss in their jobs if they DIDN’T prepare for that possiblity.

Oops You beat me to it Doom — good looking out!!

And this sociologist thinks that its all in an effort to keep tythes paying women bound to the church? That makes no sense whatsoever- especially considering that a tythes paying married couple pays more in tythes than a single woman who is likely to be impoverished

(A) It was just an article I read — nothing scientific to back up this woman’s claim; just her opinion.

(B) The richest self made woman in America is Oprah Winfrey. She’s black and single. Single (childless) Black Women have more disposable income than a married couple would EVER have.

Republican — I’m now sorry I mentioned that article!! I didn’t mean to start a firestorm, it was just that a comment that was posted jogged my memory.

Towncrier: DDR, so I will look it up. The fact is, the Bible clearly says you should not be “unevenly yoked” and rightly so, for it is a recipe for disaster. Let me ask your opinion: why are so many young black men apparently irresponsible? Is it because they have no fathers in their lives?

I think the problem is multifaceted. You can blame the father’s not being in the home BUT you can also blame the Uncles, grandfathers, cousins, brothers, etc. not stepping up and taking the father’s place.

You can blame the woman for not putting the same restrictions on their sons that they put on their daughters.

You can blame that “brother” who doesn’t volunteer in Big Brothers or who doesn’t mentor a child or who doesn’t come back into that neighborhood he fought so hard to get out of to help the next generation coming up.

When anyone, not just the black youth, doesn’t have the right role model to show him what a REAL man is and how a REAL man acts, you get a bunch of confused kid trying to make their way on their own.

Regarding Morgan Freeman it wasn’t me who made the charge that he was a pederast. Debbiedoright stated that. I was aghast and just looked it up to see if it was true or not.

If you have a problem with it take it up with Debbie seeing as how she seems to be more familiar with the charge against Freeman than myself.
