For those who don’t have video access, here’s what Rick Santorum has to say in the interview above:
“In the Netherlands, people wear different bracelets if they are elderly. And the bracelet is: ‘Do not euthanize me.’ Because they have voluntary euthanasia in the Netherlands but half of the people who are euthanized — 10 percent of all deaths in the Netherlands — half of those people are euthanized involuntarily at hospitals because they are older and sick. And so elderly people in the Netherlands don’t go to the hospital. They go to another country, because they are afraid, because of budget purposes, they will not come out of that hospital if they go in there with sickness.”
A few quick points:
1.) The remarks above come from the frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, a man who in late February is still leading the race by some 10 percentage points nationwide.
2.) This statement was made not five years ago or 10 years ago, but earlier this month.
3.) Not a shred of what Santorum says is true. There are no such bracelets in the Netherlands. They exist only in the same reality in which green men from Mars exist, and in fact the Dutch press is laughing at Santorum’s claim that “we in the Netherlands delight in murder of the elderly.”
While the Netherlands does have a euthanasia law, a total of 3,136 terminally ill people took advantage of that option in 2010, a far cry from Santorum’s claim of 10 percent of all deaths in that nation.
Under Dutch law, the attending physician must certify in writing that the patient has made “a voluntary and carefully considered request” to die. The physician must also certify that the patient is undergoing unbearable suffering and that the patient’s condition is terminal, with no hope of recovery. As Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post further notes, “the patient must voluntarily and repeatedly request the procedure, and another doctor must provide a written opinion agreeing with the diagnosis. After the death, a commission made up of a doctor, a jurist and an ethical expert also are required to verify that the requirements for euthanasia have been met.”
Say what you choose about the merits of euthanasia. Feel free to debate it. But Santorum’s claims that half of euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands are involuntary — i.e., outright murder — and that senior citizens are terrified of going into the hospital lest they be killed in order to save on health care costs are absolutely ludicrous. It is ignorant fear-mongering, and as the gasps and moans on the tape reveal, people swallow it.
4.) Did I mention that this man leads in every national poll for the Republican presidential nomination? As a Dutch writer notes, “It would be laughable if not for the fact that Santorum is still very much in the race for the Republican nomination against Barack Obama for the presidency of the most powerful country in the world.”
Look, every party has its Maxine Waters and, to a lesser degree, its Dennis Kuciniches. However, Waters did not just win three presidential primaries, as Santorum has. When Kucinich ran for president in 2008, he got all of 1.35 percent of the vote in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary and then dropped out.
I honestly find it depressing that a major American political party has come to a state of affairs verging on collective madness. It’s obviously not a healthy sign for the Republican Party, but it’s also bad for the Democrats, who need a sane and vigorous opposition to keep them honest. Most of all, it’s bad for our country and bodes poorly for its future. I know for a fact that there are millions of very sane, decent Republicans in this country; I just wish they would begin to speak up and take their party back.

“The man misspoke horribly. He does it regularly. He is a consummate BSer. He knows just enough to get things sort of, kind of, maybe, possibly, almost right. But he is so undisciplined he just can’t pay attention to detail, because that works against his pandering, hyperbolic rhetoric and fear mongering.”
Well Am, that’s a start….at least you said “misspoke”. Now, had he said “wallet card” instead of “bracelet” and gotten the percentages exactly right (it was 7%), I’m guessing Jay doesn’t even print this edition of “who wants to believe everything I print”.

Actually, one of my first links had the journal that included the number euthanized involuntarily…..
I then posted the quote from the survey in which the Dutch admitted to being afraid to go to the hospital along with the organization that prints wallet cards for people that don’t want to be involuntarily euthanized……
It’s all there……have at it.
Or, using the md decoder ring, none of it was there, the ten percent involuntarily euthanized or the braclets. Got it.

“(AP) taped on April 7, 2003, and published April 20, 2003, Santorum stated that he believed mutually consenting adults do not have a constitutional right to privacy with respect to sexual acts. Santorum described the ability to regulate consensual homosexual acts as comparable to the states’ ability to regulate other consensual and non-consensual sexual behavior, such as adultery, polygamy, child molestation, incest, sodomy, and bestiality, whose decriminalization he believed would threaten society and the family, as they are not monogamous and heterosexual.”

A third Santorum rant in two days. So now social issues are more important than a failing economy, no leadership on the international scene, record debt, lies, corruption…. anything that the community organizer says is OK because that nut Santorum really believes in his Catholic convictions. Now lets prey on women and convince all of them that Santorum doesn’t really care about them. That sonogram picture a couple of days ago still sticks in my mind,,,, that probe that Republicans are going to stick up your vagina when you get an abortion. Bookman, you have really gone to a new low with that picture. You said that It “is inserted “deeply” into the vagina, if I remember the quote just right. Wonder if it feels any better than what was inserted “deeply” to cause the problem in the first place. You have nothing else. GDP equals our debt or better. Unemployment is in the tank as well as home foreclosures. Millions of Americans have just quit looking. And we are concentrating on some probe inserted into some woman’s vagina. If it weren’t so damn ridiculous, it would be funny.

Applying that number to the US, we had 2,437,163 deaths in 2009. That would mean “only” 17,060 would have been euthanized involuntarily at the 0.7 % rate. Sounds like a news story to me.

He does have a point there, in my view. It is all about drawing lines. Ideally you want all or nothing (all sex is allowed or none). But that is impossible, so people will draw lines where they see fit. A homosexual may want to exclude bestiality or polygamy, for instance. I consider homosexuality (along with adultery, bestiality and the like) wrong on religious grounds – on the theory that if a certain and best order of things was established by a being with enough wisdom and power to create the universe and life as we know it, then a perversion of that order is wrong. But that also includes theft, murder, lying, and a host of other things. Homosexuality is not a special kind of “sin” – it is but one of many.

The Branding Dilemma For Southern Baptists and The Republican party:
Late last year, the Southern Baptist Convention completed an eye-opening study that included this fact: Knowing that a church is Southern Baptist would make four out of 10 Americans less likely to become a member of what is – for now – the nation’s largest Protestant denomination.
In the political world, this is known as unfavorable name recognition. And it’s a killer. Ask Newt Gingrich.
So this week it was no surprise that, for 24 hours, at least, leaders of the denomination considered dropping – after 166 years — one of the most iconic and successful brand names in American culture.
Republicans should pay close attention to this, for the parallels are deep and striking. The strength of both institutions is rooted in the traditional South. Membership in both is aging, white – and slowly declining. Each has problems appealing to minorities. Gender gaps are another common bond.
Finally, over the last several decades, both Southern Baptists and Republicans have created an orthodox set of beliefs to determine who, really and truly, is one of their number.

Were there folks afraid to go to the hospital due to euthanasia….yes.
Did folks have some form of system to have on their person so as not to be involuntarily euthanized…..yes.

Santorum has now proven himself to be unpresidential, in my opinion. I have liked a lot of what he has said – especially saying that most young people who 1) graduate from high school 2) hold a job and 3) have children after they are married do not wind up at the poverty level. That’s social conservatism at it’s best, in my view. Things usually work well if you follow the right path. But he cannot be imposing his (and my) religious views on those who are not religious and he cannot get basic facts wrong. It shows a lack of maturity and judgement.

josef: I’ll say this about Santorum, call it my early childhood training, but my radar went up on him the first time I ever watched him speaking thusly. He’s what my mentors told me to watch out for
Uh huh. Remember that LOGO documentary I was telling you about, (Closeted Republicans)? He fits the profile PERFECTLY.

“Coming this fall on Fox………”
Speaking of networks, I must admit I like a few of the NBC shows like The Voice. And I will still watch their news programs (especially Meet the Press) in spite of their looney liberal leanings (even Chris Matthews say some amazingly sane things at times – like the time to exercise “choice” is before conception, not afterwards).

Santorum mention the author Charles Murray.
Charles Murray Examines the White Working Class in ‘Coming Apart’
This is what he said in his book:
“Illegitimacy, crime, joblessness — these are not merely the much debated pathologies of a black underclass, Murray finds. They are white people problems too.”
SANTORUM DID NOT MENTION THAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT WHITE PEOPLE.

The author Charles Murray that Santorum quoted also said:
Using a statistical construct he calls Fishtown — inspired by an actual white, blue-collar neighborhood of the same name in Philadelphia — Murray sorts through demographic data to present a startling picture. Women in Fishtown now routinely have children outside of marriage. Less than a third of its children grow up in households that include both biological parents. The men claim physical disability at astounding rates and are less likely to hold down jobs than in the past.
Churchgoing among the white working class has declined, eroding the social capital that organized religion once provided.

And while we are participating in any sexual act that a closed door bedroom can conceive…… and we are not so enamored with Mr. Santorum, lets shift the focus from the really important things to those that bring up emotion, light us afire, bring us to the brink….. those crazy Catholics, like Santorum, those Jesus freaks who want to dictate what we can do with out “bodies”. Meanwhile, we are losing our Republic. Government is taking over. I really don’t care if Santorum believes that the Devil is the main source of America’s problems. I really don’t think that mainstream America gives a damn either. They just want to go back to work., they want to keep their home and participate in the American dream. whatever that has turned into. They want to send their kids to college, have some sort of retirement that allows them to enjoy their older years. the America that they remember is all but gone. And it was a good America, despite some warts. And it could be good again but not with Bozo and what he has in mind for this country. Santorum represents what a secular America fears most….. a truly dedicated Christian who wants to bring this country back to what it once was. What’s wrong with that? FDR was a dedicated Christian. So was Truman, Carter ,Reagan, Nixon, JFK, both Bushes…. so what’s the big deal with Santorum?

Senate Republican leaders are taking heat for millions of dollars worth of earmarks they requested in a $1.1 trillion spending package on deck for passage this month.
GOP Policy Committee Chairman John Thune (S.D.) and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) convened a Wednesday morning press conference to criticize Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) for trying to speed the package through the Senate before Christmas.
