Santorum a symptom of the GOP’s very deep ills

For those who don’t have video access, here’s what Rick Santorum has to say in the interview above:

“In the Netherlands, people wear different bracelets if they are elderly. And the bracelet is: ‘Do not euthanize me.’ Because they have voluntary euthanasia in the Netherlands but half of the people who are euthanized — 10 percent of all deaths in the Netherlands — half of those people are euthanized involuntarily at hospitals because they are older and sick. And so elderly people in the Netherlands don’t go to the hospital. They go to another country, because they are afraid, because of budget purposes, they will not come out of that hospital if they go in there with sickness.”

A few quick points:

1.) The remarks above come from the frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, a man who in late February is still leading the race by some 10 percentage points nationwide.

2.) This statement was made not five years ago or 10 years ago, but earlier this month.

3.) Not a shred of what Santorum says is true. There are no such bracelets in the Netherlands. They exist only in the same reality in which green men from Mars exist, and in fact the Dutch press is laughing at Santorum’s claim that “we in the Netherlands delight in murder of the elderly.”

While the Netherlands does have a euthanasia law, a total of 3,136 terminally ill people took advantage of that option in 2010, a far cry from Santorum’s claim of 10 percent of all deaths in that nation.

Under Dutch law, the attending physician must certify in writing that the patient has made “a voluntary and carefully considered request” to die. The physician must also certify that the patient is undergoing unbearable suffering and that the patient’s condition is terminal, with no hope of recovery. As Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post further notes, “the patient must voluntarily and repeatedly request the procedure, and another doctor must provide a written opinion agreeing with the diagnosis. After the death, a commission made up of a doctor, a jurist and an ethical expert also are required to verify that the requirements for euthanasia have been met.”

Say what you choose about the merits of euthanasia. Feel free to debate it. But Santorum’s claims that half of euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands are involuntary — i.e., outright murder — and that senior citizens are terrified of going into the hospital lest they be killed in order to save on health care costs are absolutely ludicrous. It is ignorant fear-mongering, and as the gasps and moans on the tape reveal, people swallow it.

4.) Did I mention that this man leads in every national poll for the Republican presidential nomination? As a Dutch writer notes, “It would be laughable if not for the fact that Santorum is still very much in the race for the Republican nomination against Barack Obama for the presidency of the most powerful country in the world.”

Look, every party has its Maxine Waters and, to a lesser degree, its Dennis Kuciniches. However, Waters did not just win three presidential primaries, as Santorum has. When Kucinich ran for president in 2008, he got all of 1.35 percent of the vote in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary and then dropped out.

I honestly find it depressing that a major American political party has come to a state of affairs verging on collective madness. It’s obviously not a healthy sign for the Republican Party, but it’s also bad for the Democrats, who need a sane and vigorous opposition to keep them honest. Most of all, it’s bad for our country and bodes poorly for its future. I know for a fact that there are millions of very sane, decent Republicans in this country; I just wish they would begin to speak up and take their party back.

In the good news for lib ilks pile, the O’bozo administration has been making great strides towards their goal of increasing energy prices beyond which most Americans can only imagine. As O’bozo’s Energy Secretary said:

“Somehow,” Chu said, “we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.”

“What specifically did Santorum get right?”

You can start with the part about being afraid to go to the hospital……unless you have newer evidence that suggests that is no longer true. Then you can lump the rest into something kin to 57 states…..

From what I have been reading, he got the gist of the story right……….

Obama’s new tax on oil companies is a tax on the poor. The poor who are too stupid to understand basic economics. All increases in cost of commodities is passed on to the end user in the form of increased prices. Just like the present increase in the wholesale price of oil that increase is added at the pump, on airline tickets, public transportation, price of food, utilities, and everything that consumers use. It is a tax. It is a tax. It is a tax. A well known quote is “the art of tazation is to shear the sheep as close as possible without the sheep minding.” Obama is an expert at taxation. His program of confiscating money from the poor while making them believe he is doing them a favor. He is brilliant. He takes from the poor and gives to his rich friends. Amazing.

In an interview with the Associated Press (AP) taped on April 7, 2003 and published April 20, 2003, Santorum stated that he believed mutually consenting adults do not have a constitutional right to privacy with respect to sexual acts. Santorum described the ability to regulate consensual homosexual acts as comparable to the states’ ability to regulate other consensual and non-consensual sexual behavior, such as adultery, polygamy, child molestation, incest, and bestiality, whose decriminalization he believed would threaten society and the family, as they are not monogamous and heterosexual.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In 2003, in response to comments by then-U.S. Senator Rick Santorum that were criticized as anti-gay, sex columnist and gay rights activist Dan Savage began a campaign to (in Savage’s words) “memorialize the Santorum scandal [...] by attaching his name to a sex act that would make his big, white teeth fall out of his big, empty head”.

Santorum made the comments to which Savage took offense in an April 2003 interview with the Associated Press. Discussing a recent United States Supreme Court decision striking down an anti-sodomy law, Santorum compared the right to consensual (homosexual) sex within the home to

polygamy, incest and adultery, and made references to bestiality and child sexual abuse in the

context of distinguishing them from monogamous, heterosexual marriage as forms of deviant sexual behavior.

For a second……just a second mind you……i just knew you were gonna say “phallic” instead o “fallacy”.

My mind continually lives in the gutter. Sorry.

Same with me Bruno……and when I called, they were straight up with me…..no, they didn’t like having to screw their good customers…..yes it was because they had to make up for the bad ones…..and yep, I still paid off my balances.

And you are dead on with the ACA……but the gimmes here will never see that.

Let me get the quote correct for you………. Slow your roll on your own talking pts

“If the Supreme Court says that you have the right to consensual sex within your home, then you have the right to bigamy, you have the right to polygamy, you have the right to incest, you have the right to adultery. You have the right to anything.”

The correlation to what Santorum said is there in black and white……read it.

Santorum described the ability to regulate consensual homosexual acts as comparable to the states’ ability to regulate other consensual and non-consensual sexual behavior, such as adultery, polygamy, child molestation, incest, and bestiality

But NO! It’s Uncle Sam who is the bad guy.”

It’s well established in constitutional law that pharmacists have no such right, Sinkwich. If they want to be pharmacists, they have a professional obligation to dispense all legally available prescribed drugs. If that bothers them, they can solve the problem by ceasing to be pharmacists.

I bet you think he didnt say the following as well……….. Thought so

Here is what Santorum told NPR about the role of government in 2006:

“This whole idea of personal autonomy, well I don’t think most conservatives hold that point of view. Some do. They have this idea that people should be left alone … [that] government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues. … Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world and I think most conservatives understand that individuals can’t go it alone.”

md, I did.

The man misspoke horribly. He does it regularly. He is a consummate BSer. He knows just enough to get things sort of, kind of, maybe, possibly, almost right. But he is so undisciplined he just can’t pay attention to detail, because that works against his pandering, hyperbolic rhetoric and fear mongering.

I just more or less laugh at the boob for his juvenile mistakes.

DDR, combine them and you get……….phallacy!

Actually, one of my first links had the journal that included the number euthanized involuntarily…..

I then posted the quote from the survey in which the Dutch admitted to being afraid to go to the hospital along with the organization that prints wallet cards for people that don’t want to be involuntarily euthanized……

It’s all there……have at it.

“I honestly find it depressing that a major American political party has come to a state of affairs verging on collective madness.”

All I can say is it’s a good thing you didn’t grow up among the Dixiecrats in the south during the 40s and 50s. You would be in a mental ward.

“It’s obviously not a healthy sign for the Republican Party, but it’s also bad for the Democrats, who need a sane and vigorous opposition to keep them honest. Most of all, it’s bad for our country and bodes poorly for its future. I know for a fact that there are millions of very sane, decent Republicans in this country; I just wish they would begin to speak up and take their party back.”

I largely agree with your sentiments here. But I cannot control who runs for office. On the bright side, it seems that all of Romney’s opponents are self-destructing before our very eyes. That is why I am really, really hoping for a brokered convention and someone far more viable will take the nomination without having had to go through a grueling primary process. I like Romney all right, but he does not seem to have deep convictions about things. Paul certainly does, but he’s really out there on some issues.

seems the Dutch are way ahead of us on the healthcare discussion as well as bringing to light that economics may very well come into play.

Good luck, md, the Lefties don’t like to acknowledge any of the drawbacks of socialized medicine.

In a Palinesque manner, Santorum seems to have misstated some of the material facts of the matter, and his timeline may be off, but the essence of his concern is rooted in reality as you have documented, md.

Please do enlighten me as to how…

BTW, this boneheaded move by Ricky S is not analogous to the 57 states. That was one verbal faux pas. Santorum (intentionally?) misstated at least four facts in two consecutive sentences.
