Santorum a symptom of the GOP’s very deep ills

For those who don’t have video access, here’s what Rick Santorum has to say in the interview above:

“In the Netherlands, people wear different bracelets if they are elderly. And the bracelet is: ‘Do not euthanize me.’ Because they have voluntary euthanasia in the Netherlands but half of the people who are euthanized — 10 percent of all deaths in the Netherlands — half of those people are euthanized involuntarily at hospitals because they are older and sick. And so elderly people in the Netherlands don’t go to the hospital. They go to another country, because they are afraid, because of budget purposes, they will not come out of that hospital if they go in there with sickness.”

A few quick points:

1.) The remarks above come from the frontrunner for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, a man who in late February is still leading the race by some 10 percentage points nationwide.

2.) This statement was made not five years ago or 10 years ago, but earlier this month.

3.) Not a shred of what Santorum says is true. There are no such bracelets in the Netherlands. They exist only in the same reality in which green men from Mars exist, and in fact the Dutch press is laughing at Santorum’s claim that “we in the Netherlands delight in murder of the elderly.”

While the Netherlands does have a euthanasia law, a total of 3,136 terminally ill people took advantage of that option in 2010, a far cry from Santorum’s claim of 10 percent of all deaths in that nation.

Under Dutch law, the attending physician must certify in writing that the patient has made “a voluntary and carefully considered request” to die. The physician must also certify that the patient is undergoing unbearable suffering and that the patient’s condition is terminal, with no hope of recovery. As Glenn Kessler of the Washington Post further notes, “the patient must voluntarily and repeatedly request the procedure, and another doctor must provide a written opinion agreeing with the diagnosis. After the death, a commission made up of a doctor, a jurist and an ethical expert also are required to verify that the requirements for euthanasia have been met.”

Say what you choose about the merits of euthanasia. Feel free to debate it. But Santorum’s claims that half of euthanasia deaths in the Netherlands are involuntary — i.e., outright murder — and that senior citizens are terrified of going into the hospital lest they be killed in order to save on health care costs are absolutely ludicrous. It is ignorant fear-mongering, and as the gasps and moans on the tape reveal, people swallow it.

4.) Did I mention that this man leads in every national poll for the Republican presidential nomination? As a Dutch writer notes, “It would be laughable if not for the fact that Santorum is still very much in the race for the Republican nomination against Barack Obama for the presidency of the most powerful country in the world.”

Look, every party has its Maxine Waters and, to a lesser degree, its Dennis Kuciniches. However, Waters did not just win three presidential primaries, as Santorum has. When Kucinich ran for president in 2008, he got all of 1.35 percent of the vote in New Hampshire’s Democratic primary and then dropped out.

I honestly find it depressing that a major American political party has come to a state of affairs verging on collective madness. It’s obviously not a healthy sign for the Republican Party, but it’s also bad for the Democrats, who need a sane and vigorous opposition to keep them honest. Most of all, it’s bad for our country and bodes poorly for its future. I know for a fact that there are millions of very sane, decent Republicans in this country; I just wish they would begin to speak up and take their party back.

Jay,

How do you think that moderates can take the party back from the extremists? I would think that most moderates have walked away from the deceit and hard line ideology that defines either party. The ones that are left are less and less likely to be able to influence the outcome of elections. You might want to rail against the lack of proportional representation or viable third parties instead.

Aquagirl,

Reagan- Over 16 million overall jobs during his 8 years including jobs numbers from the 81-82 recession.

Obama?- Negative 428,000 over 3 years into his administration.

Just the facts sweetie. Just the cold hard facts ma’am.

Want some more facts honeybunny?

Reagan- 21 million jobs created from the bottoming out of the recession.

Obama- what is it? 2 million or so jobs since the bottom of the recession which ended a whole 40 days into his presidency. The recession officially ended in March 2009. Just the facts dear.

Some more facts my dear?

Reagan 2 1/2 years into his presidency economic growth at an astounding 7% rate of growth.

Obama 2 1/2- 3 years into his presidency? 1.7% economic growth. Seriosuly? Just the facts toots. Just give me the facts ma’am.

Reagan- In his best month 1.1 million new jobs were created.

Obama- his best month we had 257,000 jobs created- less than 1/4 of Reagan’s top number.

JUST THE FACTS! That’s all I want sweets.

Santorum is poster boy for political and religious madness.

I lived and worked in the Netherlands. Let me list some of the concerns of the citizens and residents there.

Elderly and terminally ill people in the Netherlands would be concerned if they were denied the right to euthanasia, if they chose it of their own freewill.

Young people in the Netherlands would be concerned if they were denied the right to contraceptives, or ridiculed for sexual relations before marriage, which on the average is at 28 years of age.

Young people in the Netherlands would be concerned if they were denied free education in primary schools and universities.

Working age people in the Netherlands would be concerned if they or their dependents were denied good hassle-free medical care.

Working age people in the Netherlands would be concerned if the minimum wage were less than a living wage. They would be concerned if their economy were not growing, their commerce and industry were not competitive in the world market, and the unemployment rate were above 6%.

Poor people in the Netherlands would be concerned if they did not have a social safety net to prevent neglect and deprivation.

They need not worry; they have all that. They have the good sense to elect a government that is responsive to their needs.

You know I like source material. That’s why I linked to Reagan’s entire speech. Not just Rush’s extract.

Right after that Rush extract Reagan said “I have directed the Health and Human Services Department to make clear to every health care facility in the United States that the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 protects all handicapped persons against discrimination based on handicaps, including infants. And we have taken the further step of requiring that each and every recipient of Federal funds who provides health care services to infants must post and keep posted in a conspicuous place a notice stating that “discriminatory failure to feed and care for handicapped infants in this facility is prohibited by Federal law.” It also lists a 24-hour, toll-free number so that nurses and others may report violations in time to save the infant’s life.”

He talked about infants. Not the unborn.

And right before that Rush extract Reagan said “Let me state the case as briefly and simply as I can. An organization of citizens, sincerely motivated and deeply concerned about the increase in illegitimate births and abortions involving girls well below the age of consent, sometime ago established a nationwide network of clinics to offer help to these girls and, hopefully, alleviate this situation. Now, again, let me say, I do not fault their intent. However, in their well-intentioned effort, these clinics have decided to provide advice and birth control drugs and devices to underage girls without the knowledge of their parents.

For some years now, the federal government has helped with funds to subsidize these clinics. In providing for this, the Congress decreed that every effort would be made to maximize parental participation. Nevertheless, the drugs and devices are prescribed without getting parental consent or giving notification after they’ve done so. Girls termed “sexually active” — and that has replaced the word “promiscuous” — are given this help in order to prevent illegitimate birth or abortion.

Well, we have ordered clinics receiving federal funds to notify the parents such help has been given.”

See, he wasn’t about eliminating abortions for these girls. He was for parental notification.

His comments were quite a bit more thoughtful than the myth Rush constructed.

Again, here’s the entire transcript:

Mitt Romney and his supporters are spending more than $4 million in the battle for next Tuesday’s must-win Michigan primary, funding a barrage of negative attack TV ads aimed at Republican presidential rival Rick Santorum. But the spending spree is nothing new for the Romney campaign, which spent $18.8 million in January, while a pro-Romney super PAC dished out nearly $14 million in Florida, 20 times the amount spent by any other group — mostly for attack ads against Newt Gingrich.

I’m frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ and ‘D.’ Just who do they think they are?… I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of “conservatism.”

I’m bringing up Reagan to illustrate what kind of a recovery we should be experiencing in the wake of a severe recession. Yet we have been experiencing a terribly anemic recovery.

And exactly how would one compare a national recession vs a global recession in terms of recovery? Reagan’s issues were nowhere near as complex as what we’re facing now, if I remember correctly. I was a young’un then, so I might not remember everything correctly, but I don’t remember the entire world being knee deep in sh*t back then.

“Am I the only one who thinks a night out drinking with Jay would be pretty close to seeing George Carlin live?”

More like seeing Karl Marx live. Even though both are dead.

Someone either hasn’t kept up with the news or is anticipating “Night of the Living Dead”

Those are great analogies with Reagan, but Santorum quoting them or clicking his heels in efforts to invoke Reagan is not the same thing

“2. LIFE-TERMINATING ACTIONS WITHOUT EXPLICIT REQUEST
The survey confirms that the intentional shortening
of patients’ lives without explicit request
remains far from uncommon. Nine hundred
patients had their lives ended without explicit
request in 1995, representing 0.7% of all deaths,
only a slight decrease on the 0.8% so terminated
in 1990.’4 In other words, of the 4,500 (3,200 +
400 + 900) cases in which doctors admitted they
actively and intentionally terminated life, one in
five involved no explicit request.”

Billy C was more of a fiscal conservative than Reagan…..

One of these days you and your fellow conservatives will realize that the last three Democratic presidents have been more fiscally conservative than any of the Goopers since, oh, Ike.

Don’t like Santorum? That’s cool. Aint no biggie.

Go independent and vote for Elmer Fudd for 3 reasons!

1- Elmer’s not the pathological liar that Obama is
2- Elmer’s smarter than Obama. We can all agree on that.
3- Elmer won’t wage war on the American economy like Obama.

Jay takes off on another fantasy diversion tour hoping that Americans will be stupid enough to not notice what a miserable failure (and quite frankly a liar) his President, Obama, has been. It is comical to watch people like Jay spin when Obama says one thing and then turns around and does another and Obama has done one hell of a lot of that. Kind of like the Super-Pac thing. He vowed not to take their money and then he did a 180 and now he welcomes their money. He crucified Bush for his energy policy and one of the first things he did after coming into office was to close down the areas that Bush had approved for offshore drilling and now that he sees in an election year that gasoline is about to go over $4 and it is about to bite him in the ass politically he turns around and says we must drill more. He said that unendingly raising the debt limit was something that he would stop and now he comes around every year wanting to do exactly that. He said his Whitehouse would be totally free of lobbyists and it is now packed with ex-lobbyists. He said that he would end earmarks and now he is all for them. He denounces big business and Wallstreet but yet he gladly takes money from them and he gives them special favour. And Jay’s reaction to all these things is silence. Total silence. The only thing that matters to liberals such as Jay is winning. They don’t care if their man is any good or not and they don’t care if he is a liar. It is just winning that matters. To my memory Jay has never ever printed one word of critisism towards Obama and if he did it was about something of little consequence. Jay is willing to overlook everything in the name of ideology. God, who would’ve thunk that our country would have ever devolved to this point. I used to respect those in the news media but they have become nothing more than paid goons for one party or the other. Jay, think of yourself as nothing but a polar opposite of what you liberals think of Fox News. The thing is, Fox News is far more objective than yourself.

And I don’t blame folks for maybe not wanting to go to the hospital:

In
“15% of cases where no discussion took place but
could have, the doctor did not discuss the
termination of life because the doctor thought that
the termination of the patient’s life was clearly in
the patient’s best interests.’”

Well md, given that euthanesia wasn’t legal in the Netherlands until 2001, I’d say those 1994 numbers don’t mean a damn thing. In fact, the Dutch law was passed specifically to give some legal structure and discipline to what was already occurring informally.

I’d further suggest that a similar survey of US doctors and hospitals today would produce numbers very close if not higher than that.

Come on now. You know all the cons are going to invoke Reagan whether they are like him or not. Hell I even think some Dems invoke Reagan from time to time. Me? I like invoking Elmer Fudd since I think he would be better than Obama.
